Legislative Affairs - Lisa Lathrop 2-13-17 SUCCESS! SB 1204 was killed in the House AG Subcommittee. In spite of HSUS and the sponsor making lots of changes (HSUS always wants a “win” in every legislative session) – it still did not pass. Sale of dog or cat from releasing agency or animal rescue. Authorizes localities to adopt ordinances prohibiting the sale in a business of any dog or cat that was not obtained from a Virginia releasing agency or a nonprofit animal rescue organization. Update – 1-12-17, HB 1802, a bill to ban tethering unless you were outside and in sight of you dog, is DEAD. The VA House AG Subcommittee voted to “table” the bill. Also, HB 2116, a bill to limit pet sales in pets shops to only rescue, shelter animals is also DEAD. The subcommittee voted to table this bill too.

COLONIAL NEWFOUNDLAND RESCUE UPDATE

This year we had our first annual meeting, reunion and lunch. Because we felt that people love going places with their dogs we found a Northern Virginia winery that could accommodate humans and dogs.

While the weather was rainy and cool everyone that RSVP’ed came! We invited all of our members and anyone that adopted from us. We had a brown bag auction with lots of wonderful things and had wind-breakers and t-shirts for sale. We are already thinking about next year’s event! We would like to hear from you if you attended and have ideas for us.

Fundraising is a large part of running an animal rescue. We have been able to team up with large companies now that we are a 501c3. Bissell vacuum cleaners and Chewy.com are the latest. If you pur-chase from Bissell be sure to mention our rescue and they will donate funds. Chewy.com will donate $20 for any new customer that signs up and mentions our Rescue. See our website for more contributing companies. Don’t forget to ask your employer for matching donations!

Rescue now does the grooming seminar and we are looking at doing 2 days in October. We will do one weekday and one weekend day. Watch for more in-formation on both the CNC and CNR websites.

We have been lucky so far this year to quickly adopt out the dogs that are coming into Rescue. Several of them have been under a year old. If you are interested in adopting or volunteering please complete the application on our website – www.colonialnewfrescue.org or contact us via e-mail at [email protected]. Remember to think about the older dogs too. They are very special and knowing you are giving them a loving home to live out the remainder of their life is very rewarding.

The CNC is very active in rescue, having just reorganized its rescue arm as a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit corporation. This makes things a lot easier when it comes to raising money. This year’s first meeting / FUNd-

raiser was held at Three Fox Vineyards in Delaplane, Virginia and was a very nice venue, even in the rain.

A large crew of CNCers got together at this vineyard on April 21, 2017 to have the first rescue meeting of the year. There was a large group in attendance (38 people and a dozen or so dogs) in spite of the rain. Fortunately, our intrepid group had a nice sized tent for our meeting and barbecue lunch. The catered BBQ lunch was certainly very much appreciated by both man and beast. The local wine from the winery was enjoyed as well.

I went up the day earlier and stayed in one of my fa-vorite hotels in Manassas. Unfortunately, I developed a nasty migraine headache on the way and was barely coherent when I checked into the hotel. Fortunately, the hotel staff was VERY understanding. Kudos to them for making my stay enjoyable.

Saturday morning saw me getting up a little late and rushing to the vineyard. Fortunately, lunch and the meeting didn’t start until noon. Much friendship and levity was shared by all as lunch and the meeting pro-gressed. Naturally, there was a Brown Bag raffle after the meeting which added to everybody’s enjoyment.

I would like to thank Donna McConn and the rest of the CNC Rescue crew for the most enjoyable event.
