Waggoner’s Talk
Hello all,
I am really looking forward to the new camping season, although to those members
who keep going through the winter months the camping season never ends. By the
time this issue is printed all areas will have had their A.G.Ms, I sincerely hope that
all Areas have managed to form a full committee with perhaps some new people
joining in. we are always looking for new ideas to keep giving members a good
time at the meets.
Looking ahead there are loads of meets and THS’s in your Area’s programmes
this year and there should be something to suit everybody. I would encourage you
all to think about coming to the Motorcaravan Section’s 54th National A.G.M meet
which is being held this year from 3rd to the 6th June at Cartmel Racecourse in
Cumbria and hosted by our North-west Area. Full details and a booking form can
be found in this magazine.
I would also like to highlight the National Feast of Lanterns which is being held at
the Three Counties Showground, Malvern from 25th to 29th August. This is always a
great weekend with plenty for children and adults to do. As usual our Section
Council Secretary Kathy Giles will be doing a block booking for this event so please come along and have a great time. I
hope to see many of you at Cartmel Racecourse in June.

Our first Meet of the Season took place on the weekend of
4th – 6th March and was admirably marshalled by Tina and
Nigel. On Friday members drove though wintry conditions
to Widemouth Field CP, near Bude. With better weather on
the Saturday 15 members walked along the South West
Coast Path into Bude in sunshine, but cold wind. This walk
was led by Phil, our chairman and met a wheelbarrow of
books, for sale! The return journey was by taxi. The meet
concluded on Sunday with Coffee morning held inside. A
total of 19 units attended.
Although this was our first meet of the Season, the group
had met in January for a walk led by Roger around the
historic parts of Exeter, finishing with a pub lunch, where
plenty of catching up took place. This walk was well
attended and very enjoyable, thanks to Roger’s historical
facts.
Our next meet will be at Whitsand Bay Holiday Park
when we will also hold our AGM. At that time 3 members
will be standing down from the Committee after many years
of service. I asked each one to give me their thoughts on
standing down:-
John Pearce – “I have been a member of the Camping and
Caravan Club Motor Caravan Section for almost 20 years. I
have served on the Committee twice. During my last stint,
Roger handed the Chairman’s position over to me in 2012. I
was Chairman for 3 years up to 2015. I enjoyed every
moment especially adapting to talking to people as you all
know how shy and reserved I am. It has brought me out of
myself. I am stepping down to give someone else the
chance to enjoy what I had with the Committee and club
members. Time now for a quiet time!
Margaret King – “Den and I hadn’t been with the group
long when a vacancy occurred for a treasurer. No-one was
keen to do it, not because they didn’t want to but because
they couldn’t. I discovered that a lot pf people don’t like
figures. So I got the job and am so glad that I did. I have
enjoyed my time as Treasurer. It has enabled me to meet
everyone, get to know them and make some good friends in
the process. And most importantly it gave us both a sense of
belonging. So if you belong to a group, do your bit however
small, I am sure it will be appreciated.”
Andy Chapman – “I have done 3 years on the Committee
really enjoyed it. I think it helps when you have a nice group
of people to work with. I have been Vice Chairman on 2
Devon and Cornwall...

separate occasions and Sites Officer in between. I enjoyed
being Vice Chairman because being involved gives a
clearer picture on how a club is run, also the hard work
people put into it. If you listen to what members want and
like to happen with the club, take that forward I don’t think
you can go far wrong. I will miss being on the committee
but my own needs must come first. Maybe sometime in the
future I would like to go back on committee again.”
Future Meets:THS Exmouth Rugby Club 24th June to 7th July.
Message from our Chairman; “We’re so sorry that we have
to finish our THS at Exmouth Rugby Club one day early on
7th July. Hopefully everyone affected has received our letter
of explanation by now and we hope that your holiday with
us will not by greatly spoilt. We still have a few spare places
for the fortnight as well as some shorter stays during the
second week.
22nd–24th April, Porth Beach Tourist Park, Newquay –
very close to beach and bus service into Newquay.
4th–8th May, Whitemead CP, Wool, Dorset – close to train
and bus services to Wareham, Weymouth and Poole.
16th–20th May, Warren Farm Touring Park, Burnham-on-
Sea, Somerset – Monday to Friday Meet
3rd–5th June, MCS National Meet, Cartmel, Cumbria –
The National MCS Meet at Cartmel, Cumbria seems a long
drive for us down yer; but we are hoping a large group of us
yokels will come up and sample ‘foreign parts’ together!
After such a good turnout down yer last year, we fancy a
return match with you all.
10th–12th June, Higherwell Farm Holiday Farm, Stoke
Gabriel, South Devon – near to Paignton
17th–19th June, Little Winnick Touring Park, Pentewan, St
Austell, Cornwall – near beach & cycle trail.

New Year Meet at Hose Village HallDave and I arrived at just after 1pm and it was dry, however
that soon changed and it chucked it down and blew a hoolie.
After enjoying the marvelous spread Linda gave out boxes of
sculpting balloons and left us to our own devices and a
variety of creations emerged. Some recognizable, some
creative and some very questionable!
Dave meanwhile had set up the computer with the
projector and showed a DVD of the origins of Music Hall.
New Years Eve was a different day, bright and sunny – still
windy but not so bad. Debbie who is a newish member
offered to do some yoga/tai chi of which I and others availed
ourselves.
In the afternoon coffee/tea and a fab array of cakes were
on offer (Linda you are a star!). Delicious.
At 7.30 we were shown to our places by a very Scottish
Derek wearing a kilt that looked decidedly lose around the
waist. After the addressing of the haggis by Edith, read in
Scottish, think it made sense but I’m not sure!! there followed
a fabulous three course meal with drinks. The chef and
cheffettes plus the waiting staff excelled themselves.
Once tables were cleared Linda gave out bags containing
marshmallows and spaghetti, the aim to build a structure as
high as possible.
We then tried our skills at a few Scottish dances which to
my amazement went off very well. We did try to extend our
skills at the Strip the Willow but darling it was a disaster!!
Midnight was counted in and Auld Lang Syne was sung and
lots and lots of hugs and kisses.
New Years Day was overcast and cold and more of us
went for a second helping of Debbie’s yoga and tai chi. So
relaxing. Later time however!
There was a mixture of entertainment this evening. Started
off with the coming together of Chris and Stan. Chris was
escorted by Paul who then very willingly gave her away to
Stan who was supported by Richard and Trevor who I can
only describe as mature Bay City Rollers groupies. Derek the
nervous vicar went through their vows and exchanging of
‘rings’ with Chris and Stan and then they were formally
pronounced as “Being together whether they like it or not
…….FOREVER!’
The reception consisted of Highland Games – very good.
Then followed a bit of a highlight I think, firstly Derek
played a few numbers on his saxophone and then the
‘bridegroom’ sang a couple of songs. The first being “I did it
my way’. Stan has a truly wonderful voice.
Saturday - We had an earlier start for coffee as we had a
lot to get through. I think there are so many people to say
thank you to so I shall just say THANK YOU to everyone who
made this such a wonderful and memorable New Year Meet
and that means YOU.
Higham Lane School, Nuneaton. Valentine MeetFriday evening we went to the warm hall for a catch up with
old and new friends.
Saturday was a cold and dismal day but we made the
most of it, got the bus – well you do have to use the bus pass,
unless you are a Nev and then you have to pay because you
have left it at home. Only to have a nice bus driver who let
him on – strange that, Nev must look older than 60!!
Martin and Dave Fowler sorted out the computer etc so
we could watch ‘Carry on Loving”. At the intermission we
enjoyed an excellent bring and share. Following the rest of
the film we had the raffle and thank goodness Chris did win a
East Midlands...
Issue 172 - Spring 2016 | 9
prize but Paul won more! To finish the evening we played a
game involving 20p and a red heart box. This proved to be a
competitive game – Steph and the finish between Stan and
Eddie was pistols at dawn! I think Eddie won but I’m not sure.
We finished the meet with coffee morning and Jammie
Dodgers!
Thank you so much to Martin and Doreen for an excellent
meet and to all the other people who helped.
Roade Village HallFriday - It was a bit parky but sunny. In the evening it was
meet and greet and the quiz. Even though Stan flatly denied
that Martin had had a hand in the questions the highest score
of 9 and a half out of 20 was achieved by Tony and Val –
again!!
Saturday still chilly but dry, in the afternoon there was
board games and the odd game of darts. We shared a very
nice chocolate cake.
In the evening we had darts and three games of card
bingo – my favourite. Not too taxing on those little grey cells I
find. Paul and Steph won the darts. Fluke I reckon!
As it was my birthday today, shan’t tell you how old I am,
however there is a very well known song that might help and
it goes like this – ‘Will you still love me, will you still need me,
when I’m...’. Coffee and raffle time and it was it’s usual
raucous event and thank goodness Chris won two prizes.
Stan and Chris were thrilled to have 12 units out over the
weekend as they don’t usually have anyone turn up for their
meets!!
So many thanks to Chris and Stan for a lovely weekend.
Liz

Hello folks, from soggy Kent. At long last Winter seems to
be going after a few false starts and so here we are at the
start of the 2016 season proper. May it be a particularly
warm and rain-free one!!!!
During February, our Regalia Sec. Paul, organised a
first world war walk around Maidstone on a bright and
sunny (if nippy) day and raised £87 Pounds for the Royal
British Legion when a motley crowd of Kent members
faithfully followed their informative guide around the
various historic places.
Palm Bay, Cliftonville proved to be a good starter meet
for us with lovely sunshine and much warmer
temperatures than the previous weeks had provided. It is
handy that there is plenty of parking outside the school
should campers arrive a little earlier than usual, and there
are some great views out to sea.
At Easter the Kent group will be guests alongside our
friends from Surrey & South London and North London
and Eastern Counties at the Southern Area AGM at
Broadstairs. Aptly named the Charles Dickens School we
hope everyone has read up on his books !
Bryan and Kathy have been as busy as ever and have
provided another full program of meets for the year. It will
include many of our favourite spots but there are also one
or two new ones. A very new spot is at Royal Tunbridge
Wells in August, so as they say in Wales, “there’s posh for
you.”
Like all of you, our AGM is on the horizon taking place
on 7th to 10th April at Swadelands School, and we are
lucky to have a good committee.
Unfortunately, more than a little sadness has visited the
group this year. Firstly we lost Norman Shaw at the ripe
old age of 84. He and Mabel have been long time
members of the club and have contributed to the
wellbeing and work of the section both locally and
nationally and he will be sorely missed. As National
Chairman of the MCS Mabel spent many weekends
travelling up and down the country on behalf of the Club
and Norman whole hearted backed her up. They have
become known all over the country and Norm’s
chauffeuring skills got them where ever they went safely
and on time.
We also lost Margaret Erskine who many of you will
remember for her duets with husband Mick and his guitar.
A talented patchwork quilt maker and an expert in many
forms of needlework she will be sadly missed by those of
us who knew her.
So on that note I will wish you all good camping in
2016, and if you get to Kent do call in and see us. If you
see me just say, “Hello Peter - what are you having?”

Issue 172 - Spring 2016 | 15
Hello everyone, this is Peter writing to you this time as our
PRO Ian Taylor has left our Committee.... What a shame, Ian
had done a lot of good work for the North West and we shall
miss him.
As you will appreciate, our main efforts of late have been
the preparations for the 2016 National Rally at Cartmel
Racecourse. The site is situated in beautiful South Cumbria
just outside the boundary of the Lake District National Park.
The countryside is very picturesque and just the job for
walkers, so get your boots and your rucksacks on and off
your go.
The site is within a 1/4 of a mile of the quaint and ancient
village of Cartmel which boasts many attractions. The old-
fashioned delis known as the Sticky Toffee Pudding Shop is
well worth a visit (or two). In addition there are a number of
hostelries serving meals and there are several cafes and
tourist shops, I have even heard a whisper of a Michelin Star
Restaurant. The Ancient Priory is also well worth a look. At
the far end of the village is a Londis shop, a modern style
convenience store selling newspapers and groceries it also
has an off-licence and cash machine.
I have added a street map of the village to help those
unfamiliar to Cartmel to guide you to the site. There are two
things to note, one is that the river bridge in the centre of
the village is very narrow with only room for single lane, so
you might have to wait your turn. The other is to consider
the alternative route from the Londis shop if your van or
outfit is longer than say 22ft.
The site will open at 10.00am on Friday 3rd June, but
please do not arrive before this time as there is absolutely
nowhere in the vicinity to wait up (there are lay-bys on the
A590). Friday evening will be free and easy in the Marquee
for a 'noggin and a natter' and catch-up with old friends and
meet new ones, and maybe be a bit of music for our DJ. On
Saturday evening the premier British Lancashire Folk Group,
the Houghton Weavers will be taking a break from their UK
tour to drop in and entertain us - don't miss this one. On
Sunday evening we renew our acquaintance with Rob
Mason, remember him? the Lancashire Comedian who had
us rolling in the aisles 2 yrs ago at Stafford. On Monday we
have a day out which starts with a coach tour and visits
some Lake District attractions, such as the Lakeland Motor
Museum, the Haverthwaite & Lakeside Steam Railway and a
cruise on Lake Windermere. Another one not to be missed
so book early. You may also wish to join us at pre and follow-
on meets, courtesy of Lakeland DA at Spital Farm, Kendal,
see details in Out & About.
There is a Booking form in this issue so get booking and
I hope to see you all at Cartmel in June. Our meets upto the
next issue are listed below, you are welcome to join us at
any (or all of them) if you wish.
Best wishes to you all

HOLIDAY MEETS 2016
18 | Waggoner’s Talk
A good meet was held at the auction mart in the market town
of Thirsk where campers were able to sell and buy various
items from the table top sale.
Our last meet of 2015 and the first meet for 2016 nearly
didn't happen as the racecourse at Ripon was flooded the
week before. Fortunately the room we use had been
damaged and tide went out on the camping area allowing us
to proceed as normal. Needless to say we did have an
evacuation plan ready as the forecast wasn't good but
fortunately we didn't have to implement it.
January again saw us at
The Bridge Hotel at
Walshford near Wetherby
for our annual winter dinner
with 53 people sitting down
on the Saturday night for a 3
course meal. Entertainment
was provided firstly by
Jennie Humphries reading a
suitable Pam Ayers poem
and then by our Vice
Chairman Mike Moores
giving a monologue. The
dinner for 2017 is already
booked.
Skipton Auction Mart saw a turn out of 67 units with most
of the occupants sitting down on the Saturday night to a
Ploughman's platter and wine courtesy of the Section funds.
Following that a quick game of bingo and then a couple of
quizzes. All in all a good weekend.
Our meet at Drax Sports and Social Club attracted 22
units with the evenings spent in the Clubhouse for good food
and drinks.

Hi Folks,
Greetings from Northern Ireland. It is hard to believe that
we are now in the first quarter of 2016. Our last outing of
2015 was to Downpatrick Cricket Club for our annual
dinner dance. We had twenty units in attendance which was
a good turn out considering we were so close to the big
day. Friday night saw us tucking into a traditional meal and
afterwards the man in the big red suit made an appearance
to distribute gifts to all. Saturday night was dancing night,
which many took part in, enjoying the varied music of the
group Jigsaw. We held a ballot at the interval with a lot of
prizes on offer. The night ended with a lot of weary
travellers winding their way back to their vans. On Sunday
morning the Cricket Club provided us with Tea and Coffee.
This gave us all an opportunity to talk about the weekend
and also to present Certificates to those who took part in
the First Aid and Defibrillator training which took place in
November. Well done and congratulations to you all.
Despite the terrible weather, twelve units attended the
New Year Celebrations at The Blue Circle Boat Club on the
31st December. The dance at the Boat Club had been
cancelled due to the bad weather but that did not stop our
folk from celebrating! No way. They saw the New Year in, in
style. The Bar was open and the members clubbed together
and arranged a Supper, good food, good friends and great
craic what more could one ask for. Because of the awful
weather folk only stayed the one night, but well done, you
really are a great bunch.
Cookstown 22nd-24th January. Cookstown High School
in County Tyrone was the venue for our first meet of 2016.
We had twenty units in attendance and it was good to catch
up with old friends and hear all their news. John and Chris
Murray were our Stewards for the weekend and as usual
gave us a varied programme. We gathered in the hall on
Friday night for a game of Daffodil Drive, a variation on the
old Beetle Drive, thankfully we didn't have to draw a Daffodil
just colour it in as the numbers came up. Saturday dawned
dull and crisp and a lot of the folk took full advantage of the
shops and Saturday market that this town has to offer. In the
evening all shopped out twenty eight of our members
headed to the local Chinese Buffet, which John had very
kindly booked for us. It was good to sit down with friends
and enjoy a meal together and enjoy the banter and for the
ladies NO DISHES to wash! After the meal we adjourned to
the hall to enjoy a bit of dancing, but were all too full after
the meal, so we just enjoyed the music.

24 | Waggoner’s Talk
Well here we are again with two meets already done and
dusted to start 2016 off what we hoped would be a jolly no
problem start, but our first venue at Rodborough Tec College
in leafy Godalming was a Saturday 3 a.m. football match. We
were all in the land of nod, and the local Yobs decided we
would make good goal posts. Paul contacted the local Police,
but no joy there as they do not have the manpower to send
anyone out!! Nevertheless when we book a venue in good
faith we expect it to be safe, so no return there. However not
to be too downhearted we did continue our A.G.M with a
good Saturday evening with a quiz and music from Paul our
new Chairman and a raffle that nearly every one won a prize
so no sad songs only happy faces, to retire to our beds with;
and no I am pleased to say midnight visitors. Once again our
attendance was down for our A.G.M. It is a shame because
numbers do matter when the Committee have worked there
socks off to provide and book some delightful venues to visit
for the first time or return to because we enjoyed them
previously, so maybe we are a bit too soon in the year to get
together? It’s an item to discuss at our next Committee
meeting. However moving on to our second meet at
Cranleigh for our spring nosh, a very good turnout, cold but
no rain, a very warm welcome back from the Cranleigh
Village Hall, for a meal that every body enjoyed so much that
Paul has booked already for the end of the year, it pays to
book in advance when you get an evening in a warm
pleasant venue with live entertainment a big refurbished
dance floor to strut your stuff, well worth putting on your glad
rags for, well I think so and that’s all that counts, so enough of
my ramblings lets get on with what you lucky people have to
Surrey & South London...Where does the time go here we are again Easter Eggs
are everywhere and today the sun is shining. Some of
you have had a bad winter with too much rain but in this
part of the country we seem to have been much better
off, although plenty of wind and not a lot of sun. Here’s
hoping that it will improve for Easter which is really the
start of most of our members camping season.
Kent Group has started their season off with a Winter
Ramble and although I could not be with them I heard
from my sources that it went off very well.
Once again Surrey & South London Group are ahead
of the game and have had their AGM. They had a good
weekend and returned a full committee, which is always
good to see. Kent Group does not have their AGM until
April, so if there are any Kent members who are thinking
of perhaps joining the Committee talk to the members
of the existing committee and give your name to Jill
George the Secretary. It is not hard work and you will
meet other members all with the one aim of enjoying
themselves.
It is the Southern Area’s turn to hold the Easter
Celebrations this year and the usual invitations have
been sent out to Surrey & South London and North
London & Eastern Area, but we will be pleased to see
anyone who fancies a few days by the sea. It will be
open from Thursday 24 March – Tuesday 29 March at
the Charles Dickens School, Broadstairs. A full
programme has been laid on with a Music Quiz on
Friday night, live entertainment and a Kentish Supper on
Saturday. On Sunday morning we will be holding the
Southern Area AGM. Sunday evening will be a mystery
evening with Geoff. Bank Holiday Monday gives you
time to explore Broadstairs with a get together in the
Hall in the evening.
The South Eastern Region is hosting the 2017
National Feast of Lanterns; this will be held at the
Hickstead Showground from the 24 – 28 August 2017.
They are asking for help from all the DA’s and Sections
in the Region so if you would like to volunteer, you don’t
have to be an expert at anything, just give your name to
any member of the Kent Group Committee who will
pass it on. We volunteered for the last NFOL in our
Region and thoroughly enjoyed it although I have to say
it was not restful.
Happy Easter to you all

my colleagues on the Council to further the aims of our
Section and our Club.
CatherineHodsonWe joined the Club
in 1984, we have
become Veteran
Campers and enjoy
camping even more
now that we are
retired. For me it is
the people, I know
that wherever we travel in the UK we are never far from
an MCS meet or a THS where we will be welcome and
meet friends. We are finding this is true also of the rallies
abroad and still keep in touch with friends we met in
Delft for the Dutch Flower Festival and the lovely Irish
Tour. When VAT was introduced in 1997 I became
Treasurer of the Northern Area and continued doing this
for 16 years. I saw many changes from the old manual
system to the introduction of computers and now as an
auditor to the Yorkshire Region I am finding my way

Them Hills When the hills are pink, it’s time for a drink.
If the hills are grey, have one any way.
When the hills be blue, you have one too.
If the hills look black, don’t put that bottle back!!
Should the hills turn green, open the Bristol Cream.
If the hills be red, have a large one instead.
When the hills go brown, get some more in town.
If the hills are white, it’s the gin tonight.
Now when the hills are gold, have a pint of old.
But if the hills look wan, it means you are too far gone.
If the trees start to look thin it’s time to pack it in.
So you don’t need any doctors’ pills,
You can learn it all from the colour of the hills!!!!!!

around the new online Cashbook. In the Northern Area we
have a very good working friendship with the Yorkshire
Region and help at their Region Meet each year. We were
also on the working party when they hosted the NFOL at
Pickering in 2008 and look forward to doing this again in
2020. We also served on the MCS working party at the
FICC in Ipswich in 2009 which was good fun. I am at
present on the MCS Section Council as Membership
Secretary and pleased to see a steady increase in our
membership over the last few years to 6500 plus
members. I feel that to get the most enjoyment out of
camping I need to get involved and if we all do a little bit
to help make it work, it will.
Edith LangHello there I have served on
your Council as Vice
Chairman and then
Chairman and I am now
Immediate Past Chairman. I
am also the Treasurer of our
Midland Area and in the
past have been Sites Officer
and Chairman as well as doing a previous stint as
Treasurer. You also may remember me as the Editor of
Waggoner's Talk when I got to know so many members
during that time. I have also represented our Club on the
stand at the NEC and this year will be assisting on the
stand at some of the Outdoor Shows. I have also been at
the front organising and running Section National meets
and Oswestry and Stafford. From this you will see I am not
only interested in enjoying my camping but have always felt
I needed to contribute any skills I have acquired over the
years both camping and in the commercial world. I have
always loved my camping and if you so choose I would love
to continue to carry on assisting in any way I can.
David BlairI have been a member of The
Camping & Caravanning Club
for 24 years, starting with a
Caravan and now a Motorhome.
I have been a member of the
Motor Caravan Section for 14
years. During that time have
served as a Committee
member, Sites Officer,
Chairman and I am at present Vice Chairman for Scottish
Area. I have also been the Scottish Area Representative to
Scottish Regional Council and was elected to the Motor
Caravan Section Council in 2015 for 1 year. I have
stewarded at many meets over the years and enjoy
promoting both the Club and the Section to new members
and welcoming them to the Scottish Area. I would like to
have the opportunity to continue serving on the Section
Council.
Liz SmithI would like to take this
opportunity to
introduce myself. I am
a member of the East
Midlands Area of the
Section and have
served on their
Committee since 2009 in various roles and I am at present
Chairman, Data Protection Officer, Webmaster and
Temporary PRO During my time with both the Club and
Section I have met members from all over the country and
have always enjoyed talking with them about our Club and
Section and if they are not already members encouraged
them to join us. I have stewarded meets for East Midlands
on a regular basis and have always enjoyed getting to
meet the members. I also assisted in organising and
running the 2012 50th National Rally of the Section at
Newark Showground. If I am elected to Section Council I
would like to work with the rest of the Section Council to
continue to move the Section forward.
Martin WhitakerWe joined the Club in 2001 and
the Section I have served as Vice
Chairman, Chairman & Sites
Officer for East Midlands Area,
and I am now elected Section
Councillor and serve as MCS
Vice Chairman and Deputy
Membership Secretary. As a
member of both the Club & the Section for the past 15
years I have made many friends all over the country and
the warm welcome we receive wherever we travel is great.
I enjoy my roles on Section Council and if re-elected
would like to continue in these position and my aim is to
move both the Section and the Club forward.
