Galleywood Youth ClubWe have had a fantastic time at Galleywood Youth Centre consisting of a night making epic pancakes! We even managed to get a flipping challenge going. So far we have been having great fun, with the start of our healthy living project, creating bizarre colourful to delicious tasty smoothies, we have had several workshops around self esteem, mental health and alcohol awareness.

The group has really embraced the new changes with a new staff team, and as a new team we have loved being at the centre and getting to know the young people. Feel free to swing by and say hi, there will always be biscuits! We open 6.30-8.30pm on Thursdays during term time.

YMCAGPC working in partnership with YMCA Chelmsford & Essex Youth Service

Essex Youth Service is supporting the Parish Council and the YMCA under their new Community Capacity Building model, which offers buildings, training and weekly support as required.

The Youth Club is open every Thursday from 6.30-9.30 pm and young people (aged between 13 and 19 years) are encouraged to come along and enjoy the wide range of activities on offer.

Drivers, can you help?Galleywood Voluntary Community Care has a group of volunteers who drive the more frail of our residents to their medical appointments. Since the closure of the GP’s surgery in the village, there has been an increase in requests for our help. To meet this demand we need to expand our pool of drivers. This is not a fixed regular commitment, but is based on need and notice is usually given in advance. There is an allowance of 40p a mile, which is paid

annually at the end of our financial year.

Our drivers are now required by law to have a DSB (Disclosure and Barring) check. If you do not already have one or the old CRB check, we can arrange one for you, which only requires filling in a form and it is free.

If you are available during any weekday and would like to help in this valuable service to the community, please contact Alex, our Transport Officer on 01245 495671.

Chairman’s OverviewBy Cllr Bob Villa

During the 2015/16 year the Council has consisted of nine Councillors. In May 2015 elections were held, Cllr Roy Van Tromp did not stand again for election, and Cllr Stephanie Troop was not re-elected. However, we were able to welcome new Cllr Anthony McQuiggan and returning Cllr Richard Hyland. I was appointed Chairman, and my remaining fellow Councillors were – Cllr Mrs Janette Potter (Vice Chairman), Cllr Bob Harman, Cllr Neville Paul, Cllr Graham Nichols, Cllr David Stevenson and Cllr John Turkentine. We currently have five Trustees appointed to the Keene Hall – Cllr Richard Hyland, Cllr Anthony McQuiggan, Cllr Graham Nichols, Cllr Neville Paul and Cllr David Stevenson. However, at the Full Council Meeting on 1 February 2016, Galleywood Parish Council agreed to reduce the number of Trustees appointed by Galleywood Parish Council down to four. We have three Trustees appointed to the Galleywood Heritage Centre – Cllr Anthony McQuiggan, Cllr David Stevenson and Cllr John Turkentine. Our Minor Local Authority Governor for The Galleywood Infant School is Cllr Neville Paul. Councillors are also representatives on a variety of wide ranging outside bodies.

Galleywood Parish Council Staff are – Ms Jane Head, Clerk to Council, and Mrs Nicola Caton, Deputy Clerk. During the year Mr Dennis Piper retired from his duties as a Village Attendant and we welcomed Mr David Lodge, other Village Attendants are - Mrs Marilyn Byford, Mr Robert Passfield (who also looks after our noticeboards), Mr Daryl Martin who cleans the bus shelters together with Mrs Debbie

Galleywood Parish Council’s 29th Annual Parish Open Forum, on Thursday 7 April 2016, Galleywood Heritage Centre, The Common Galleywood

All parishioners are invited to attend the Annual Parish Open Forum (APM) at the Galleywood Heritage Centre. Free refreshments will be available throughout the event.

This year we have returned to our previous popular format where we combine the Meeting with an Exhibition of Galleywood Clubs, Associations, Schools and our Church. The Exhibition will commence at 6.30 pm and resume at approximately 8.30 pm. This is a great opportunity for parishioners to see what’s on in Galleywood, speak with club organisers and even take up a new hobby or sign up to volunteer with one of the many local groups we have on offer. We are also lucky to have two guest speakers who will help make the evening interesting and informative.

This year the “Pride in Our Village” competition has taken the theme of “My Garden in Galleywood”. Children and young people from 5 – 16 years have submitted pictures and paintings of their garden in Galleywood. Our adult poetry competition has also taken the same theme. It will give the Chairman great pleasure to announce the winners, so please encourage your family, friends and neighbours to come along.

Slade who opens and closes the Galleywood Public Conveniences. Further volunteers include Mr John Cummin who takes photographs of our official events and celebrations, Mr Brian Pepper (from St Michael & All Angels Church) and parishioner Mr Chris Kersley who are part of the editorial team for the Galleywood Grapevine Community Magazine which covers news from St Michael & All Angels Church, Galleywood Parish Council, together with Galleywood Clubs and Associations. I would also like to thank local historian Mrs Wendy Cummin who works tirelessly researching and documenting the history of Galleywood, together with Mrs Gillian Knowles and Mr Russell Davies who open and close our very popular phone box library at Pipers Tye, and all other volunteers who help make our village such a special place to live.

Along with Full Council Meetings, the following Committees met regularly: – Finance & Resources, Planning & Highways, Personnel, and the Youth Club Sub-Committee. Additional meetings have taken place with Essex County Council, Chelmsford City Council, the YMCA Chelmsford, and other partners as and when required. Councillors are always willing to meet with parishioners to discuss village issues, and in October 2015 we resurrected the Galleywood Parish Council Surgery at the Keene Hall. The Surgeries ran until the end of November. Following an agreement reached with Essex County Council, the Surgery has commenced again at Galleywood Library on the last Saturday morning of each month. The first Surgery was held on 30 January between 10 – 12 noon, and future dates include : 27 February, 30 April, 25 June, 30 July, 24 September, 29 October and 26 November. There is no need to make an appointment, just feel free to turn up.

The year ending on 31 March 2016 has been a busy year, and we are currently reviewing the Local Plan for Chelmsford. As a Parish Council we are invited by Chelmsford City Council to make comments on plans, we do this at our Planning & Highways Committee Meetings which are held monthly and are open to the public. We always welcome parishioners to attend the meetings and they can participate in Public Question Time. (Please see timetable of dates on page 16) Following Committee meetings we submit our views. Ultimately Chelmsford City Council, who have qualified planning officers, are responsible for the final decision on each application. L

Galleywood Festival 2016 'Celebrating Life in Our Village' May 20th - 29th www.galleywood.org

WOULD YOU LIKE TO TAKE PART IN THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL AS PART OF

GALLEYWOOD’S OWN ‘POP-UP’ CHOIR? Last year the Galleywood Festival included hugely enjoyable rehearsals and two performances of local composer Eric Witham's specially-written cantata "Gavelwode", a piece about the history and character of the parish of Galleywood. This year's choral activities at the Festival will provide singers with the opportunity to explore a small number of popular choral classics at two workshops (St Michael's C of E Junior School Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th May at 7.30pm). These will culminate in a rehearsal and sing through to family, friends and neighbours in St. Michael's Church on Wednesday 25th May. Directing proceedings, as last year, will be Stephen Rumsey.

The music we shall explore will include works by composers such as Mozart, Handel and Mendelssohn, with additional helpings of Trad and Anon. Copies of the music and digital music files to help prepare for the event will be made available in due course but no particular previous experience will be assumed.

COME AND GIVE IT A GO! Can't read music? Come along anyway - there is much you will pick up as we explore the music and put together the performance.

Galleywood Festival 2016

Galleywood Festival 2016 is the fourth in the new series of events, reviving the community spirit and camaraderie of the Galleywood Carnivals of yesteryear and ‘Celebrating Life in Our Village’ in the 21st Century. The Galleywood Festival Committee was established following the very successful ‘Galleywood Celebrates 2012’ event, a Galleywood Parish Council initiative. The committee regularly meets at and has free use of the Galleywood Heritage Centre, Registered Charity No 1128416, with the full support of their Trustees. In November 2015 the Festival Committee invited businesses, clubs, pubs, societies, schools and individuals to take part in the 2016 Festival, and currently we have 19 confirmed events at numerous venues in the Village over the 10 days from Friday 20th to Sunday 29th May. The majority of the events are self managed, but all are being promoted under a common publicity banner, though the press, social media, posters, flyers and leaflet drops. The planned events are yet another demonstration of the skills, knowledge, expertise and endeavours of our residents, of all ages and walks of life, to promote Galleywood. If you would like to join in the festivities please either contact the individual event organisers, as listed or contact myself- Mobile: 07976 742827 Email: [email protected] Stop Press – We have a surprise event, weather, the 70 year old technology and serviceability permitting, a fly by over Galleywood of a DC3 Dakota on Saturday 28th May, between 1.00pm and 6.00pm!

Following on from the article in the Winter issue of this Magazine, Galleywood Parish Council co-ordinated two training courses at the Keene Hall on 9 and 15 February 2016. Mr Stuart Little, Four Parishes First Responder Group and member of the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust and Rebecca (pictured below) gave an interesting and informative training session to 30 attendees, on manual resuscitation and use of the defibrillator. The two newly installed defibrillators funded by Galleywood Parish Council, are located at the Keene Hall and Co-Op in Barnard Road. You can’t miss them, they are housed in bright yellow heated cabinets and can be used by any member of the public as they provide full audible instructions. The

cabinet is kept locked but it can be accessed via a digital keypad, the combination of which is known by the ambulance service and local community first responders. If you need to use a defibrillator you must first call 999 and ask for an ambulance, you will then be given the key code to the defibrillator. You can find out more by attending our Annual Parish Open Forum on 7 April 2016 at the Galleywood Heritage Centre. Stuart will be giving a presentation during the evening and will be on hand to answer your questions.

If you are interested in attending a future training course, please contact the Clerk on 01245 358898 or email [email protected]

Where do you play? In The Keene Hall every Wednesday afternoon. Galleywood Infants School every Monday Evening.

Can anyone play? Yes, bowls is a great game for all ages. Our existing members’ ages range from teens to 80+.

Do I need my own bowls? Nothing initially. We have club bowls available for learners.

How much does it cost? Your first two weeks are free. Annual membership is either £10 plus £3 each time you play, or a one off annual fee of £80 due September, but adjusted when you join.

If you would like more information, please call Frances our membership secretary on 01245 699891, or just come along on Wednesdays 2pm till 4.30. Mondays 7pm till 9.

About our ClubWe hold charity and other events throughout the year, including a Bowlathon in January. Over the last 10 years we have raised over £10,000 for various charities.

We play social matches against other clubs, either home or away and these games are great fun with the competition, also followed by a meal. And you don’t have to be an expert bowler to join in. If you do not drive, we can usually help with transport.

Our club has social activities other than bowls, including quiz nights. In 2015 we had a trip on a barge from Maldon, visited the Air Ambulance at Earls Colne and went up the Thames to London from Gravesend.

SO - COME ALONG - MAKE 2016 THE YEAR YOU TAKE UP A FRIENDLY, FUN ACTIVITY - WE LOOK FORWARD TO WELCOMING YOU.

The Big Friendly Read will invite children into the wonderful world of Roald Dahl, where they will meet and rediscover many of his best loved characters, such as The BFG, Matilda and The Twits.

2016 marks 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl and The Big Friendly Read is a celebration of his stories and the amazing artwork of his principal illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake.

Children will be encouraged to read any six books of their choice to collect character cards, stickers and a medal.

In each library children will be able to hunt out Roald Dahl characters, scan them on smart phones or other devices and then watch as the characters come to life through augmented reality.

The Big Friendly Read is aimed at children aged 3-12 with a special early years version for babies and toddlers. It runs from 16 July to the 3 September.

The challenge will encourage children to expand their reading, explore new authors and discover facts, characters and stories across the best contemporary children’s writing.

For those aged 10 or about to start

secondary school, there will be a special activity called My Zine offering older kids an opportunity to create their own mini magazine, or ‘Zine’, on a subject that interests them.

Cllr Anne Brown, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Corporate, Communities and Customers, said: “In 2015, 42,000 children in Essex took part in the Summer Reading Challenge, improving their reading skills and confidence and having a great time sharing books and celebrating their achievements.

“We want to encourage even more children to take part in this marvellous free summer activity in 2016.”

ICE – In case of emergencyMobile phone users can add an entry in their contact/address book using ‘ICE’ as the address and give a contact for their next of kin and any critical information such as significant allergies. This allows first responders such as paramedics and police to contact them in emergency situations where the individual may be unable to speak.

If you use a lock/passcode to access your address book you can often find an ‘app’ which will allow some text to be displayed even when the phone is locked such as an ‘ICE’ or ‘Lost and Found’.

If you have any problems doing this, my advice is to ask any teenager – they all seem to know how to do it!

Message in a bottleA simple but effective way to keep essential personal and medical details in the house where they can be found in an emergency. Developed by The Lions Clubs, widely used and often available at surgeries through pharmacies.

Users are provided with a small plastic bottle and a form on which they write their essential information such as next of kin and medication list. They keep this in their fridge – a safe and easy place for it to be found. They put a green cross sticker on their fridge where it can be seen. Paramedics, police, fire-fighters and social services will look for this when the information is required – saving time and sometimes lives. The bottles are free and contain all that is needed – a list, green cross stickers, instructions etc.

If you would like one call – 01245 474425 and we will try to get one to you.

If you do have one, just check the information is up to date.

So just what can you and I do to be a good neighbour?

Do you have some hints and tips to share? Send them to Ken Edwards, 2 Vale End, Galleywood, Chelmsford CM2 8NZ [email protected]

In this edition we look at two ideas for how you can help yourself so that in emergency situations the right information is there to help others help you. Particularly for carers or those who know of vulnerable family members or neighbours you can encourage them to do this as well as use it yourself.

Galleywood W.IWith spring around the corner, W.I started our year welcoming five new members; we wish them all a happy association with the Galleywood Group.

January

We all enjoyed a pre-meeting, with a soup lunch, which was very welcome on the cold day. Members enjoyed various soups made and served by the committee; everyone agreed a very enjoyable way to start the New Year, whilst making a profit of £90.00 for our charity of the year, “Farleigh Hospice”

February

February was tinged with sadness hearing of the sad loss of Maureen Andrews; a stalwart member of W.I since 1987, a moving tribute was paid to Maureen by Betty Gibson.

On a happier note we held our annual pancake coffee morning at the Heritage Centre, which was well attended. The toss the Pancake competition was won by Jan foster and our charity fund was swelled by a further £200.00.

Plans are well in hand for our “occasion “day at the Keene Hall on Thursday 24th March 2016.

Please come along and support us and enjoy the Stalls, Display of wedding Dresses, all for an entrance fee of £2.00 which includes a glass of bubbly and a finger of Special Occasion cake.

Look out for our posters around the village, we hope to see you and expect a very warm welcome from Galleywood W.I

Inform Galleywood Update‘Inform Galleywood’, a local initative of St Michael’s Church, opened its doors in November to provide support to people in the community with debts, benefits and other money-related issues.. Inform Galleywood isn’t able to offer advice but can help people find out what advice people might need, and where to get it. So far we have helped people with housing, child care, household budgeting, entitlement to benefits and form filling.

Based at St Michael’s those seeking help will be given space to find information that they need, with support available from volunteers if wanted. You can drop in at St Michaels on Thursday afternoons (2pm to 4pm) and Saturday mornings (10am to 12pm). People can also contact the Inform Galleywood team to set up a time to talk about sorting out their financial problems. Appointments can be made for the above times as well as for Tuesday evenings, between 7pm to 9pm.
