The StandardsThe Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort to establish a shared set of clear educational standards. These standards are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to go to college or enter the workforce and that parents, teachers, and students have a clear understanding of what is expected of them.

Forty-five states, the District of Columbia, and four territories have adopted the Common Core State Standards as of May 1, 2013.*

Nonfiction Is CoreToday’s students are being asked to read more informational text than ever before. To meet the Common Core State Standards, half of the reading materials should be nonfiction even at the youngest grades.

Highlighting Common Core to

Increase BusinessEducators, administrators, and parents in more than 40 states are highly focused on providing the resources and support needed to help all of their students and children achieve academic success in the age of the common core. At the heart of the new standards is an increased focus on informational and nonfiction texts. Scholastic Library Publishing’s products and resources—trusted by educators and parents for more than 90 years—are integral in helping students and teachers meet their common core teaching and learning goals.

Common Core Features in Our Books! On pages 2–15 of this catalog, you will find direct connections between the Common Core State Standards and Scholastic Library Publishing’s nonfiction titles.
