Our students, their stOries

Meet Raquel, a 5th grade student who experienced the KiM program five days a week for the past three years. The main challenges Raquel had to overcome were self-esteem and academic performance. When asked to write about her experience in the KiM program Raquel wrote, “What i like about Kids in Motion is that they help me out with my homework when i need help with it.  Also it helps my family out when my mom is working so she can get money and it helps my two sisters and brother out with their homework and their reading. Kids in Motion is like a home to me when i come after i get out of school.” Raquel’s mother also mentioned how KiM has been a great help since she works full-time and has four children.  She is especially thankful that the KiM program provides the afterschool transportation needed to ensure her children can take part in necessary academic programming. Raquel’s mother has seen improvement in all of Raquel’s academic classes and her self-esteem.  Her grades are up. Her reading is up.  Her confidence is up. Raquel’s report card for the first quarter of the 2012-2013 school year showed all A’s in reading, language arts and mathematics.

Junior Achievement Academy prestigious Magnet program Honoree

AFLC was proud to have four KiM students selected for this inaugural 2012 JA Academy class of only 125 students in Orange County. Jackie (Age 14, pictured), is one of the KiM program graduate students chosen. She spent each afternoon with KiM since she was five years old. Her parents have actively participated in AFLC English and Literacy classes in order to help her pursue her academic goals.

reading Companion with 4th and 5th graders Corinne Waite, our teacher, has been with AFLC since September of 2012. This quarter Corinne began working with KiM students using iBM’s Reading Companion, a web-based literacy tool that uses voice recognition technology (their virtual book shelf). This is where books not only read to the students, but also test their pronunciation and self-adjust to that particular student’s level. “The self-adjusting is the coolest part about this program for the kid’s. They are getting what they need and not getting bored,” says Corinne!

AFLC knows the best way for children to reach their full potential is to involve the entire family in their development.

Fry Hammond Barr marketing firm joins AFLC Mission“At Fry Hammond Barr, we feel it’s our duty to give back to the communities that we work and live in. Upon learning of Apopka Family Learning Center and it’s family-centered approach, i immediately wanted to find a way to help bring awareness to their efforts”, said Mason Moore, V.p. public Relations & Social influence. “ it only took one visit to the center to realize that extraordinary things were happening here. My goal is to help by developing a strategic marketing and communications plan that gives the organization the direction and tools it needs to get the attention it deserves and help fulfill its mission”, said Mason. Thank You Mason and Fry Hammond Barr!

Art Promotes Academic and Personal Growth On Wednesdays you can see incredible artistic expressions in every classroom! This school year AFLC introduced an arts program focused on nurturing individual student creativity, encouraging group collaboration and giving participants the chance to explore new and sometimes life-changing experiences in the arts. giovanna Dasso really believes that art has the ability to calm students who may be experiencing frustrations at home. “Studens love to draw their family and you should see how the most vivrant students are calmed when instructed to draw what they want to be in the future,” shares Dasso. giovanna is a member of public Allies and the Kindergarten and Arts Teacher. Arts activities have included everything from drawing techniques, plays and singing, to students expressing their dreams through acting. “if they can see their potential, through our work here at the AFLC we are sure they can believe it!” said Dasso.

for FamiliesCollege and Career Coaching - Merfort Mirat currently works at the Apopka Home Depot store and he is required to complete online training courses. Merfort enrolled in computer training courses at the AFLC because he wanted to be better prepared for his current job. “Now I am more confident with my computer skills and I know I will get more out of my employment online training courses,” says Merfort. “At AFLC we are committed to better prepare families for workforce challenges in order for families to become more self-sufficient and ultimately achieve their dreams” says CEO, Ellen O’Connor. Marjorie Lloyd, a Vista Member working with the Florida Literacy Coalition is the coordinator of the College and Career Training classes. “We are seeking members of the community with business expertise to participate in our classes as trainers and career coaches” said Marjorie.

Anonymous grantor invests inAFLC Long Term Strategic plan in January of 2103 AFLC received an anonymous grant to fund Strategic planning and Capacity Building. As a result, we are very excited to have the opportunity to work with Dr. Teresa nesman a professor from the University of South Florida’s College of Child and Family Studies to develop a theory of change logic model and related strategic plan. Dr. nesman will be leading a 6 month planning and research project working with the AFLC staff, Board of Directors and key community stakeholders. “The USF Logic Model Team provides assistance to community teams as they map out their desired system change, plan how to accomplish that change, and generate shared responsibility for the results”, said Dr. nesman.

We were proud to launch a custom website design in October that was created by our staff and a local design team. Our new website is allowing AFLC to communicate our message more effectively, increase class attendance, donations, and raise awareness. Additionally, we have incorporated more social media efforts to capture our students success REAL TiME. We hope you enjoy.
