Top 10 Ways to Prepare for aCareer Fair [videos]http://goo.gl/rO38R

Career Fair Employer ListBecome familiar with the employers attending the fair and the hiring needs they have identifi ed. TIP: Take initiative! Ask a recruiter for the best way to fi nd more information (and perhaps an introduction!) if you have an interest in their company that extends beyond what you see listed. http://goo.gl/z4hHc

Career Center Drop-In AdvisingUse a 10-minute conversation to get customized advice as you prepare for the fair.TIP: Ten minutes goes quickly! Prioritize what you’d like to understand before the fair and ask those questions fi rst. You can always come back, and you can always set up an appointment to have longer conversations.http://goo.gl/yOVWS

Resume GuideGo beyond a list of past job descriptions. Use your resume to present your methods, accomplishments and results.TIP: Write a short list of the qualities that you know your reader will be using to distinguish great candidates from the suffi cient. Ask someone to read your resume and tell you how he or she would remember you. Make sure they match!http://goo.gl/SkJ8d

On-Campus Recruiting GuideUnderstand what “OCR” is, and how it works. This is a valuable resource available to Duke undergraduate and graduate students.TIP: Read the student policies and expectations AND the employer policies and expectations. Both provide you valuable information.http://goo.gl/L1coQ

Duke eRecruiting Activate your account to access the one-stop destination for jobs and internships posted by employers who work with the Career Center.TIP: When activating your account, sign up for Career News, the Career Center weekly newsletter. You can also subscribe to informational email lists that match your interests. If you already have an account, modify your subscriptions by editing the administration section of your profi le. http://goo.gl/4L2kF

Career Center Resources to Support Your Career Fair Success

Before: • Know yourself and what you want to accomplish

by attending the career fair. • Choose and try on your outfi t to be sure it fi ts and

you’re comfortable. Clean everything and iron out the wrinkles.

• Study the list of participating employers and research organizations that interest you. Know why you want to work for them.

• Develop and practice a 10-second introduction for yourself. Include your name, academic interests, class-year and career goals.

• Prepare specifi c and general questions to ask. • Review the fl oor plan of the fair and prioritize who

you will visit fi rst. Decide who you’re willing to wait in line to meet, even if it means visiting fewer employers.

• Print extra copies of your resume.

• Check Duke eRecruiting to see if and when employers hosting events or interviewing on campus.

During: • Prioritize your time. Visit employers on the top of

your list fi rst. • Use your 10-second introduction, eye contact and

fi rm handshake. Smile! • Employers won’t have much time at the fair, so

lead with information that you think will interest them most.

• Make a note of the representative’s name for follow-up.

• Offer a resume to the recruiter. • Be curious. Learn more about options you haven’t

previously considered. Gather information and follow up with further questions after the event.

• Ask about the hiring timeline and process if the organization is not returning to campus for interviews.

• Take the initiative and engage in meaningful conversation with representatives. They will remember you if they get to know you.

• Make connections and get advice. Doing so will provide you with excellent resources in your career search and decision-making process.

After: • Follow up! If you promised to send a resume, send

it. • Send thank-you letters. Include information

about your conversation and your interest in the company.

• Submit your resume on Duke eRecruiting to apply to jobs and internships.

DEADLINE MARCH 1, 2013

You interact with people every day: They ask you for directions; You share notes with classmates; You ask a friend where to buy clothes or video games for the best price; Someone posts an article link on Facebook, which you, in turn, “like.” These are all forms of networking that you have probably mastered by now, yet when it comes to networking for professional purposes, you freeze. Students often ask me, “What should I do when I arrive? What am I supposed to say?” Here are some tips to get you started:

See it as just a conversation or exchange of information between people with mutual interests. That should make it pretty easy to do because you have some-thing in common with them. Your job is to figure out what those common interests are and maximize on them. Do this by asking the right questions.

Do your research. If you are going to a network-ing event where the attendee list is shared beforehand, take some time to learn more about the backgrounds of folks with whom you plan to connect. You will feel more comfortable when you finally meet and will be able to maximize the time you have together.

Follow up and follow through quickly. If a contact refers you to an opportunity, resource, or another contact, act fast! Also, send them a customized thank you note including details from your conversation. This will show them that you mean business. As your relationship develops, be sure to return the favor and share resources with them as well; remember, networking is a two-way street.

Practice, practice, practice! Take advan-tage of all networking events, informational interviewing and online channels available to you. You will be sur-prised by how much and how quickly you learn and grow.

Dive in and take advantage of Career Center networking opportunities:

THE CHRONICLE Duke Career Fair 2013 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2013 | 11

Throughout a career fair, students will discover careers they did not know existed, hear professionals talk about work that excites them, and attempt to persuade others that they are the best candidates for specifi c jobs and internships. One thing will be consistent: those who are most successful bring a sense of purpose and confi dence to their conversations with employers at the fair.

Use these steps to identify your purpose for attending. Once you establish a few goals, confi dence will follow!

THINK. 1. How will you know that attending the career fair

was a good use of your time?

2. What are you hoping to learn at the career fair that would be hard to fi nd out using other methods?

3. How would you like to be remembered by those you meet?

ACT. 1. Follow the tips in “Career Fair Success: Before,

During and After”, published in this Career Fair Guide.

2. Watch the “Top 10 Ways to Prepare for a Career Fair” series we’ve been posting on our YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter accounts.

3. Use the “Career Center Resources to Support Your Career Fair Success” for additional information.
