Best School Garden Competition 2012 “A school garden is nothing without team work and dedication from pupils and staff”. Last year saw 14 schools battle it

out for the prestigious GFK shield for best school garden. Winners in 2012 were, in 1st place Banstead Infants,

2nd place Bond Primary and 3rd place Downsend Epsom Lodge . So if you think your school garden is up to the

challenge or needs a makeover, what better incentive than to enter our 2012 competition. For entry details and rules see

our Horticultural and Cookery Show Handbook, these are available on request.

Last entries no later than Saturday 16th June, this gives us ample time to judge before the summer holidays.

GFK Sunflower Challenge 2012 (Sponsored by Westland Horticulture)

The current world record stands at 8.03m, and is held by German flight attendant

Hans Peter Schiffer. Can you beat this record? With this newsletter you will find a complimentary packet of giant sunflower seeds courtesy of Unwins Seeds. We are

sending out 200 of these packets to local schools in the area, and would like to challenge you to see who can grow the tallest sunflower.

It’s simple, the tallest single plant wins £200 to spend on gardening products,

second place wins £100 and third place wins £50.

Grow as many plants as you wish, and whichever one ends up being the tallest can be entered into the grand final. Take a picture and send the entry back to us no

later than Friday 14th September with an accurate measurement and the winners will be announced at our Horticultural and Cookery Show on Saturday 22nd and

Sunday 23rd September 2012.

Good Luck!

News Reaping the Festive Rewards Any schools who earned credit will find with this pack a Gift Card for the Christmas voucher scheme from last year. The biggest collector this Christmas was Bandon Hill Primary School, Wallington. Congratulations to them and all others who earned themselves credit in the holiday season. A big thank you also to all of those schools who sent in cards and thank you letters this Christmas, it was greatly appreciated!  A Successful 2011 Overall in 2011 we have given back over £10,000. We are very proud to be in the position where we can offer this help and it always gives us great pleasure to see or hear about the benefits that it brings to schools and their gardening projects. With the increased voucher fund of up to £20,000 we hope to better this in 2012. We hope that you will continue using the scheme for the coming year and it is worth bearing in mind that every year there are thousands of pounds on offer through the scheme waiting to be claimed!

Horticultural and Cookery Show 2012

Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd September. Soak up the atmosphere and excitement of the Woodcote Green’s very

own Horticultural and Cookery Show. With over £3,000 in prize money and 900 entries together with fantastic trophies and rosettes up for grabs,

2012 is looking to be bigger and better. Why not enter and enjoy the experience for yourself. For the children we have the very special GFK

classes, these are for children only (up to and including 14 years old) and will be judged with this in mind. It’s not just plants, fruit and veg; we also

have cookery and art classes available to enter, so you don’t even have to have a garden! Also schools have a chance to win prizes, the more

children you can encourage to enter from your school the more chance you have of winning the top prize for the organisation that scores the

most points. Last year this was Chipstead Valley Primary

School. The 2012 Horticultural and Cookery Show Handbook will be

available soon, If your school wishes to receive a copy either pick one up

in store or email [email protected] and we will send one

on to you. Alternatively it will be available to download from our website from the GFK pages before the end of March.
