The Evolution of Continuing Education:A Retrospective View

College for Kids Summer Academy is a seven week pro-gram for students ages 5-14. The Academy offers a uniqueeducational experience for students in grades K-8 to devel-op their literacy skills in a college setting. The Bronx Forum at Hostos Community College

Youth Health Dates TBA

A dialogue between Bronx youth and professionals on the key health concerns facing Bronxteens. Topics include healthy relationships, self image and identity and leadership and empow-erment.

Mental Health and Addiction Dates TBA

An informational forum for professionals on beneficial practices and available resources fortreating mental health and addiction in the Bronx.

Chronic Illness Dates TBA

An informational forum for professionals on beneficial practices and available resources fortreating chronic illness in the Bronx.

The Center for Bronx Non-Profits (CBNP) is a new initiativebetween Hostos Community College and CAUSE-NY, the inter-group relations division of the Jewish Community RelationsCouncil of NY (JCRC-NY). CBNP is a convening, training, andresource sharing space, working to strengthen the capacity ofcommunity leaders and organizations serving the Bronx.

the Allied Health Career Pipeline

Program. The program which trains

individuals to become a Certified

Nursing Assistant, is a career-focused

job training program for low-income

individuals to gain careers in the

Allied Health professions.

The Pipeline Program will provide

enrolled students with all the neces-

sary services and support to com-

plete the training course and intern-

ship, pass the state certification

examination and achieve employ-

ment in a nursing home. Ultimately,

students may choose to continue

their training along the pipeline

leading to college entry to become a

The Hostos Digital Design Certificate is a year-long program that offers students an introductionto the world of design through four introductory courses: Designing with Computers, Introductionto Graphic Design, Designing Data and Introduction to On-Line Interaction.

Qualifications: 1. Ability to commit to all four courses (Attendance is mandatory)2. Successful application and Interview process

Hostos Digital Design Certificate

Designing with ComputersStudents will be provided with a foundationalunderstanding of the essential software for begin-ning their careers as digital designers. This willinclude the Adobe Creative Suite software(Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver),FinalCutPro, ProTools and Microsoft’s PowerPoint. The class will provide an overview of thevarious interface elements and program capabili-ties through a variety of engaging design projects.The course allows students who are consideringpursuing an Associate’s Degree in Digital Designto sample the many different possible directionsand methodologies that they might follow.

Introduction to Graphic DesignThis course will help students build a familiaritywith the use of point, line, shape, texture and colorin order to create designs that build a sense ofspace, time and motion. Knowledge of these toolsand how they work will help them to better under-stand design for 2D mediums such as screenbased and print media, as well as photography andfilm. Students will develop important familiaritywith concepts of harmony, scale and proportion,contrast and emphasis, as well as rhythm bymeans of exercises and readings. These readingsand exercises will help them to realize these impor-tant concepts in their work as digital designers.

GED© for HealthcareA GED© class that will help students prepare for theHigh School Equivalency exam while building founda-tional knowledge of the healthcare field. GED© instruc-tion uses Allied Health as a framework to teach the fivesubject areas (writing, science, social studies, lan-guage arts and mathematics) and develop basic com-munication, problem solving and critical thinkingskills. Instruction will also focus on career explorationand job readiness skills by integrating key concepts,terminology and skills from the healthcare field into thecoursework.

ESL for HealthcareAn ESL class designed to help speakers of other lan-guages learn to speak, read and write in English inorder to enter the Allied Health career field. Instructionwill focus on improving pronunciation, building fluencyand strengthening communication skills. Students willbe introduced to various reading and writing activitiesto help build their English literacy skills, introduce newvocabulary and build English grammar skills.Instruction will also focus on career exploration and jobreadiness skills by integrating key concepts, terminolo-gy and skills from the healthcare field into the course-work. *Eligible students must have a high school diplo-ma or GED ©.

An introductory course on the basic procedures used for obtaining blood from veins

and capillaries available to students who have a current NYS Certified Nurse Aide

certificate, RN or LPN licenses. Provides skill building for those who are already

in the health care profession. Students will learn the skills and responsibilities of

the professional phlebotomist. Topics include standard precautions, collecting blood

specimens for diagnosis and treatment, performing capillary punctures, and more. This course

is a combination of theory and practical training. Live veinipunctures, conducted in class, will

be a component of this course. Participating students and volunteer subjects must sign an

"Acknowledgement of Risk" form. On successful completion, students will be able to sit for the

NHA Certification exam. (The Hostos coordinator’s permission is required to be admitted into

this class.) Books and test fee NOT included in tuition.

Phlebotomy Technician Certificate

The Electrocardiography/Holter Monitoring Technician program will prepareyou for a challenging career in cardiac testing.

Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) Technicians prepare patients for testing on ECG machine Holtermonitors and also assist physicians with ECG stress testing. They take patient history andadminister actual ECG’s for physicians to interpret.

Registered Dental Hygienists are now permitted, under the direct supervisionof a dentist, to administer intraoral and infiltration anesthesia or nitrous oxideanalgesia to a patient who is 18 years of age or older. Hostos Community

College’s Department of Dental Hygiene is offering a course for certification inLocal Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia.

In compliance with recent law in New York, this course will facilitate the New York Statelicensed dental hygienist’s application for a Restricted Certificate in Local InfiltrationAnesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia. The program will be comprised of lectures (30 hours) andhands-on clinical application (15 hours) under faculty supervision.

Upon successful completion of this course, the dental hygienist will be able to apply for cer-tification through the New York State Education Department.

Participants who do not meet clinical competency for local anesthesia and nitrous oxide pro-cedures will not be permitted to challenge the written certification exam and will be requiredto retake the entire course at their own expense.

Tuition Discount:Register for 2 or more classes: 5% discount. Seniors (62 years or older): 15% discount. HCC stu-dents, staff, and alumni with valid ID card: 15% discount. Note: Only one discount applies.

Registration Fee:There is a non-refundable $20 registration fee per person, per semester.

Tuition and Fees:Registration is done on a first come first served basis. Students must pay in full when register-ing. No personal checks accepted. Students are not considered officially registered until theyhave completed their tuition payment. Most courses require the purchase of books.

Changes in Program:The Division of Continuing Education & Workforce Development reserves the right to cancelcourses, make substitutions in faculty and change the days, times and locations of classes if nec-essary.

The College is not responsible for misprints in catalogues, brochures and/or advertisements. Inthe event of an error, we will make every effort to provide you with the correct information. Allcourses operate based on sufficient registration. If a course is cancelled by the College, all reg-istrants will receive a full refund.

Session Guarantee:Inclement weather and/or other unforeseen circumstances may cause the cancellation of a classsession. For weather-related cancellation information, call the Division of Continuing Educationand Workforce Development at 718-518-6656 or Public Safety Office at 718-518-6888. Weguarantee that the number of sessions and/or number of hours specified for each course will beadhered to.

Refund/Withdrawal:Request for a refund must be submitted in writing together with a copy of the registration receipt.The refund will be mailed within three weeks of submission. Lack of attendance does not con-stitute withdrawal and eligibility for a refund. A 100% refund will be given if a course is can-celled by the college. Registration fees are non refundable unless class is cancelled by theCollege. Refunds will not be issued after the end of the first day of class.

Course Cancellation:Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. When courses are cancelled, students may transferto another course or receive a full refund. It is the student’s responsibility to call the day beforeclass starts to confirm if class will or will not meet as scheduled.
