Executive Summary

Introduction

As part of the Leadership for Education and Development Program (LEAD) and Middle East Partnership

Initiative Tomorrow's Leaders (MEPI TL) at the American University in Cairo (AUC), the LEAD/MEPI TL

program, conducted in cooperation with the Office of Institutional Research (IR) an online survey to

solicit the LEAD/MEPI TL students’ feedback about their coordinators within the LEAD/MEPI program

mission and objective. The LEAD/MEPI TL office intends to use the survey findings to improve their

program.

In May 16th, 2012 the Office of Institutional Research, emailed survey invitations to 275 students (233

LEAD and 42 MEPI). Two survey email reminders were sent on May 24 and June 12, 2012 and the survey

remained accessible until June 20th, 2012. When the survey was closed, from them there were 88 LEAD

students (37.8%) and 27 MEPI students (64.3%) completed the survey.

Methodology and Organization of the Report

This report is divided into three Parts.

Part I, general demographics’ information are presented as frequencies and as charts.

Part II, LEAD students and divided into four sections. Section I, includes the students’ evaluations to the

coordinators as frequencies and as charts. Student’s life values are presented in Section II, as

frequencies and as charts. In Section III, cross tabulation questions are presented in frequency tables. In

Section IV, the respondents’ comments and suggestions for more improvement are presented.

Part III, MEPI students and divided into four sections. Section I, includes the students’ evaluations to the

coordinators as frequencies and as charts. Student’s life values are presented in Section II, as

frequencies and as charts. In Section III, cross tabulation questions are presented in frequency tables. In

The LEAD students presented 76.5% and the MEPI students presented 23.5%. Students’ gender

was 33% ‘male’, and 67% ‘female’.

The students’ cohort number was reported as follows: 4.3% of the students were from ‘cohort #

4’, 4.3% from ‘cohort #5’, 9.6% from ‘cohort # 6’, 16.5% from ‘cohort #7’; 40.9% from ‘cohort #8;

2.6% of the students were from ‘cohort # 9’; 2.6% of the students were from ‘cohort #10’, 7%

from ‘cohort #11’; 10.4% from ‘cohort #12’ and 1.7% did not report this question .

In this section, when the LEAD students were asked “Does the coordinator try his/her best to treat all

students with equality?”, 65.9%% reported “Yes”, 29.5%% reported “No” and 4.5% did not answer this

question.

For the question, “My coordinator has an understanding of AUC’s liberal education system”, 45.5%

of the students reported ‘strongly agree’, 35.2% reported ‘agree’, 14.8% reported ‘neutral’, 3.4%

reported ‘disagree’, 1.1% reported ‘strongly disagree’.

For the question, “Individual and group meetings with my coordinator are sufficient”, 29.5% of the

students reported ‘strongly agree’, 36.4% reported ‘agree’, 12.5% reported ‘neutral’, 14.8% reported

‘disagree’, 5.7% reported ‘strongly disagree’ and 1.1% of the students did not report this question.

For the question, “My coordinator highlights the objectives of activities and link them to LEAD’s

Does the coordinator try his/her best to treat all students with equality? Please specify:

Negative comments:

1. She sometimes treat some students well unlike others

2. Students who are used to visit her office regularly are the ones who take the biggest share of

her interest. Those who do not, she does not even know their names and she does not ask

about them. For example, we did presentations this semester. Her close students got 16 out of

16 although they were not that perfect whereas the rest do not exceed 11 or 12 out of 16 and

she kept picking their mistakes in a non-constructive way!!

3. She is not fair at all and she does not equally treat all of students. She discriminates between

Christians and Muslims. She is very tough and not fair with Muslims while she is so generous to

Christians in grades, help and the manner of speaking and the way she treats them.

4. She is biased towards the feminist element in the cohort; she goes out a lot with them. She

can't isolate her personal life and her professional one. she is still very immature in taking

decisions

5. Our coordinator treats students who she likes well and gives them the highest grades in LPI.

Also, when some of us ask her about the semester abroad she tells them to give up because

they do not have the opportunity. During our presentations, some of us did not exert any effort

and they just got high marks while others who (I witnessed the situation) really exerted great

effort didn't get fair marks because our coordinator simply does not like them.

6. Yes, but she needs to try harder as some students still feel that they are not treated equally and

fairly.

7. She does not treat us equally and she does not hear anything but her own voice. Once I asked

her to change that date of Portfolio, which was only 2 days after our finals, because of the

presidential elections that were only 2 days after our finals, the same two days and we had to

travel to vote in our own governorate, she refused and only said, "I do not like to change my

decisions"!!!!!

8. She prefers some students and deal with them better than others.

9. She is completely far from equality. She loves some students, so she gives them more time,

more grades, accept their excuses, even if they do not make sense: 1- In a presentation, she

told one of those she loves, to say anything more, she even suggested for him some aspects to

mention and left him to add present them in an extra two minutes. 2- Once she disagreed with

one student and said to her, "if you do not like it, leave it" meaning the scholarship.

12. I think in the presentations, my coordinator was not that fair in grading the presentations. For

example, she allowed someone to re do the presentation! We did not know the rubric or the

criteria for grading. the thing was not that serious

13. I think her mood affects her attitudes a lot!

14. May be she tries but doesn't succeed in doing so. she gives some students, who are close to

her, the chance to talk with her , meet her without appointment, and spend around two hours

with them in the office talking, and others not. She takes some students' opinions about

changes in the programs and schedules and others not.

15. she discriminates between students, for example: when we did our presentation she allowed a

student to repeat his presentation because she wasn't satisfied with his presentation on the

other hand she didn't give other students enough time to present and she always interrupted

them and told them to finish and hurry because she wanted to take the bus; moreover, it wasn't

a professional presentation because she didn't pay attention to some students because she was

thinking about the bus and gave us bad grades.

16. She likes students more than others and sometimes i feel ignored while i am in the same session

with them all. She asks for some opinions and just as if i do not exist in that situation she likes to

advise students more than others. She understands some students' situations and gives them

some privileges and because she does not have the same level of information and

understanding for others, she does not give them this privilege.

General Comments 1. Most of the cases all the students get the chance to express themselves freely, but I guess that

there might be a thing between agreement with the coordinator's opinions in overall or what is

known in the LEAD office community as (attitude) and LPI grades. Some of office staff face any

opposing point of view as a negative attitude while whoever doing so might be trying to tell his

opinion in brief the staff need to be more welcoming to opposing point of views from students

with open mind and students too need to deliver their opinion accurately.

Q. 7: Please suggest any areas for improvement:

1. She is doing her best to make us good leaders

2. The coordinator must listen to us more and she has to know that she is there to make our lives

easier not to make it more complicated by refusing our requests and keep asking us to do things

with explaining any reasons. Easier and more effective communication please. The trainings,

the retreats and the sessions we take with LEAD are not beneficial at all and most of us think

they just waste our time and we do not learn something new through them; you can see this

through our evaluation after every session.

3. 1. for the past few semesters, retreats were fun, i won't deny that, but there was minimal

benefits out of it if any, I would say budgets should be spent more wisely. like for example, we

visited governorates and discussed with governors in our first year, which is when we didn't

have such necessary skills to be able to really 'discuss' and make the most use out of the

program. then, when we were one or two years from graduation, which is when we should be

more challenged, or even given more practical and professional trainings, we only went on

outings and retreats. it was good, but it was not structured like a cohort retreat, there were no

collective or team activities that got us as a team to work with or even get to know each other

better, but every group considered it a different outing. Which i don't believe is the objective of

the retreat. 2. Major advantages, that we get as LEAD students, aren't clearly communicated

to us, like for example the option that the LEAD can cover conference expenses if the student is

participating in an international conference. I personally did not know anything about this, until I

asked, only after my department couldn't get me a conference grant and my professor asked if

my scholarship program could cover it. In the end, it wasn't covered because I asked less than

one month ahead, but what annoyed me is that this is a right we should be clearly informed of,

imagine that every student gets the chance to have one conference completely covered, which

would help much in their development, and has no idea about this. 3. I do not personally feel

that the office cares about the best for the LEAD students, if so, why doesn't it inform students

who have credits to pay that the sooner they pay for it, the better for them? why doesn't it

spend the budget in a way that ensures that as LEAD students graduate they are extremely

developed not just 'had a nice time'. 4. Why didn't the office discuss with us Islam Kamel's

case, and put into consideration he was almost done! we all know the reason he got his F grades

is that he was involved in some serious situation in Tahrir, we all believe the LEAD office could

have done more and literally saved Islam future. 5. As a graduating senior, I am really very

thankful, that I am lucky enough to have had a full scholarship at AUC, I do not want to send a

wrong message, and say it was full of mistakes. But it is not only a full scholarship! it's not paying

my expenses for buses, courses and books, it's supposed to developing me too, and I do find the

LEAD program responsible for thinking about all the ways that can develop students, not leave

that to student's suggestions specifically during finals week!. LEAD program should think of the

most beneficial trainings and events and encourage students to go and participate and LEAD and

help us develop throughout the process. I hope the LEAD program solves these issues and

provides better opportunities to current LEAD students, because they deserve better.

4. treating students with equality

5. She is the best and I’m honestly saying the truth not for any extra points :D as you know she is

leaving , so all what I’m saying is just to show how much she is amazing. i just want to say that

any word of appreciation will not be sufficient to express how much am grateful to have her as

coordinator and a friend. I'm really going to miss her and wish her the best of luck.

6. The coordinator has to look for what's best for the students and walk them through it, but not

choose the easy path that makes them in safety and waste an opportunity for them.

7. I think it would be better if the coordinator can effectively separate between work and

friendship. I think that the coordinator is a good friend for some student while others want to

keep this as a healthy work professional relationship.

8. Training should be meeting students' expectations.

9. she needs to listen to us when we ask her to push the deadlines a little bit.

10. I hope that the training sessions won't clash with important events held by the university like

the career mart in the coming years.

watch her as she is really too unprofessional especially with some of us who disagree with her.

some sometimes I feel that she somehow aggressive

16. I guess, the way of communication can be improved, no need for complementing students too

much to the extent that i don't feel it real. she can encourage us without this over

complementing We should be informed with the criteria or the rubric for the grading.

17. Our coordinator has many great and professional skills that I, honestly, benefit from. But i think

she should give all of us the same chances to express ourselves. She doesn't give me feedback,

except when I ask her! But I think it's better to give me feedback, when she notice something

about me and won't wait till she give me the LPI to improve myself. I think it's better to keep

feeding me with notices and advice to improve myself faster and better.

18. My coordinator has a non-friendly approach while dealing with professional requirements, so i

suggest that she deals with us from the perspective of understanding and being on our side and

at the same time, follow the LEAD rules and we will submit the requirements but in a more

loving way bearing in mind that she wants to follow the rules but she totally understand how we

feel and why we are asking for certain things. In other words, i need to feel her trust and care

for my benefit while applying LEAD regulations.

3. The rules of the LEAD program are not strict at all. When I ask my coordinator about

something related to LEAD regulations, the answer is always "It depends on the situation" I

have some decisions to make that are very important and related to a strict yes or no.
