Keep the Ball Rolling

By definition, to keep the ball rolling is to con-tinue or give renewed vigor to an activityalready under way. Many presidents before mehave advanced our presence and have workedhard to get us to where we are today. I serve

as president in 2012 after serving in pro bono and media rela-tions/public awareness. As a board member, I have had theprivilege to meet and work with some of the greatest of pro-fessionals, each talented and giving of their time to help themany initiatives we have supported in both our membershiporganization and the community.

So often we anticipate a reward for the acknowledgment of ourefforts. For our time, we expect fame and recognition. For sac-rifice and kindness, we secretly expect acceptance and admira-tion. Not so with the FPA Philadelphia Tri-State Area boardmembers. We are a diverse and innovative group comprised ofprofessional individuals sharing a common goal and commit-ment in providing the highest level of service to our membersand expertise to the people of our surrounding community. The difference is, we do it with heart.

Our chapter is highly respected at the FPA national level. Therespect that has formed translates into the obvious: we standfor certain values that go to the very core of our being. Wehave won awards, established relationships with like-mindedorganizations and professionals, and have listened to what ourmembers want - quality programs and resources that foster thevalue of financial planning and help to advance the professionand practice of financial planning.

In 2012, simply stated, we will continue to serve. In mimick-ing the strategic plan developed at the national level (in whichwe played a great part), our primary aim consists of:

Our Members: to deliver superior member valueOur Profession: to be the authoritative sourceOur Society: to serve as the credible voiceOur Organization: to optimize organizational performance

Our strategic plan is voluminous, our initiatives are collabora-

tive, but even more importantly, our energy is infinite. We areexpanding and quantifying specific tasks and goals. Opportunitiesrange from "doing one thing" to steering a large committee. Thisyear, a focus has been placed on organizational proficiency and suc-cession planning.

Announcements (continued)

In Memoriam

As some of you may or may not know, Al Marland passed away in his sleep last week. Al was a staunch sup-

porter of the ICFP and then the newly formed FPA in 2000, having held various board positions in both organ-

izations including 2 years as Treasurer for FPA Philadelphia Tri-State, one year as President-Elect and finally

President in 2003. Al was devoted to the profession and the organization, spending countless hours serving as

a volunteer and helped grow our chapter.

Fellow FPA member and former board member Bob Hartfield, who served with Al, had this to say…“Our ICFP & FPA board meetings were never dull if Al was present. Al was always there, ready tohelp. Al had a distinctive voice and a distinctive presence. His generosity with his time and attentionto our association are legendary. I have been amazed to hear of other organizations where Al wasequally engaged. Al was a good family man with a good sense of humor. He will be missed.”

The officers and directors of the FPA Philadelphia Tri-State Chapter join in extending their deepestsympathy to the family and friends of Al Marland.

Human Resources By: William G. Love, CFP®

Vice President – Human Resources

To our fellow FPA Philadelphia Tri-State members:

We have all heard the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” The same could be saidfor a membership committee!

We think it is important for you to know who makes up that village and what responsi-bilities they hold in helping raise up your chapter.

The following people below should be recognized and applauded for their efforts:

Relationship Managers: Kevin Coughlin, Chris Bertram, Sameer Somal, DJ French and DarrylGrayson - These relationship managers are reaching out to the membership to listen, inform, and addressmembers’ questions and concerns.

Communication Directors: Michael Clancy and Adam Reinert – Mike has currently set up the chap-ter for Linked In and will be representing the chapter at the CFP® test this month. Also helping as aCommunication Director is Adam Reinert who will be representing the chapter at a CFP® Review Coursein the future.

Undergraduate College Student Liaison: John Nauss – John has been forming relationships with localuniversities and cultivating the next generation for our chapter.

Associate Professional Outreach Directors: Chris Bertram and Steve Glenn – Chris has been coor-dinating a networking event with ASPPA Benefits Council (details on page 5). Also helping as an AssociateProfessional Outreach Director is Steve Glenn. Steve has formed a relationship with the PhiladelphiaEstate Planning Council and is discussing ways to partner up for events in the future.

Please share any ideas, thoughts and suggestions on how to best raise our chapter to new heights.

Those of us with children know that you can never have a big enough village!

Continued Success,

Since January 2005, we have been required to report all CE credits electronically to the CFPBoard of Standards. We are having difficulty with this process because members are notproviding the necessary information.

There has also been a change in the reporting process of CE credits for the PA Department ofInsurance. Social Security Numbers are no longer accepted for reporting. Please provide yourPA Insurance License Number when applying for credit.

It is quite time-consuming for our administrator to follow-up with attendees to obtain the cor-rect information. Help us help you by being prepared and having this information when youare applying for CE credits.

Message from FPA Member Paula Nangle, CFP®and FPA Retreat Task Force Member

FPA RetreatMay 5-8, 2012 - Scottsdale, Arizona

Where Tomorrow Starts...

For this year's Retreat conference, registration is now open, the website is up, and the program schedule is available for your review. If you've never been to a Retreat conference, youowe it to yourself to at least check out the programming and schedule.

Since 1981, Retreat has been known as THE advanced planning conference - a place where the Art &Science of Financial Planning come together. To me, Retreat is the place where the best financial plan-ners I know go to learn from, and interact with, the best financial planners they know.

The theme of this year's Retreat is "Trust, from the Inside Out." It's a phrase meant to capture both theemotional and, as it turns out, chemical underpinnings of trust, AND at the same time provide a frame-work within which to begin exploring and building Trust - not only in terms of acquiring Trust of others, but also in terms of how we go about developing Trust in others, and in and of ourselves.

Nesting within this theme, we're offering three session tracks. A technical track with the usual suspectslike tax & estate planning, investment planning, sessions on Social Security, etc. The technical track iswhere we'll be exploring trust as it relates to our own professional competencies and ethics. We've got anexperiential track where we'll explore trust from the client's perspective. We have the latest on decisionscience and how to help clients expand their comfort zones and decision making abilities. And a futurethink track where we'll explore the future of planning and delivery of advice in the digital age, the break-downs in trust that were brought about by a rapidly changing marketplace, and how to cope with seem-ingly endless regulatory pressures and competition from disparate & disruptive technologies.

As if all THAT weren't enough, we've got a keynote address by Margaret Heffernan, author of WillfulBlindness. She will be speaking about trusting our judgment and our perceptions of the world we live in;how we learn to trust others, and how to better determine who to trust. Another speaker will be MoiraSommers, a neuropsychologist out of Winnipeg who has worked with the NFL players association and isan expert on that moment in the relationship where clients seem stuck and just won't implement. I'll trynot to spoil it for you but it turns out that moment is an important point in any relationship built on trustand a necessary part of the decision making process itself. Our closing general speaker is a Yale profes-sor named Daylian Cain. His research and expertise is focused on bias, overconfidence, and self- decep-tion... ours that is ... and what we can do to overcome it.

If you've never been to Retreat, this is THE year to check it out!

Remember to sign up by March 23rd to save $100 on registration and get the best rooms. I hope you'lljoin me there so that we can have a great Philadelphia Tri-State chapter showing!

A Financial Planner’s Care ProgramA Pro Bono Service

By: Eric Daugherty, CFP®, CPAVice President – Pro Bono

The Pro Bono team is expanding and is primed for 2012. Most recently, we have added threeplanners to our stable of about twenty regular volunteers. And, we have deputized two mem-bers to lead specific initiatives key to Pro Bono success.

The Pro Bono team stepped up to the effort in late December to help Sunoco and Conocoemployees who may be impacted by upcoming layoffs. On very short notice, we mobilized

almost forty planners to the event to deliver presentations and one-on-one counseling sessions. While theattendee turnout was lighter than we would have liked, the massive volunteer turnout spoke to the generosi-ty of our membership and our profession.

Pro Bono volunteers continue to staff events and presentations for our key community-based partners. Mostrecently, Vince Barbera stepped in to do ad hoc one-on-one counseling for a JEVS client; Clarifi (formerCredit Counseling Service of Delaware Valley) has received separate presentations on Estate Planning fromCaity Kennedy, Scott Bombeck, and Jim Heisler; Don Marchesiello delivered a Beginner Investing session tothe Pledging Tree Foundation, and Caity Kennedy continues to work with Operation Hope, teaching in theclassroom.

For 2012, we have reconsidered the scope of Pro Bono services and determined that financial education is inscope. Previously, we had focused on supporting organizations helping adults in need of financial planningservices. Hopefully, using some of our talents to address students will proactively insure that they do notbecome those adults in need down the road.

Most importantly, we have lined up “volunteered” deputies to spearhead two of our three key sub-teams:

1. Expand Pro Bono team coordinating with Membership committee – still resides with Eric Daugherty. We are looking for a deputy – if you can help, please contact me.

2. CBO (Community-Based Organizations) Coordinator – solicit and vet new partners – NatashaJohnson.

3. Content Archivist – insuring we can archive, index, and reuse key content/slides, etc. – Eric Bruskin.

Huge thanks to Natasha and Eric for agreeing to take on these roles.

Please consider joining the Pro Bono team. To express interest, or if you have ideas or suggestions, pleasefeel free to contact me.

Long-term Disability Insurance at a Group DiscountThe FPA group long term disability policy is a one-of-a-kind disability program. Group rates areavailable to you as a member of FPA. Guaranteed issue acceptance is offered to new FPA mem-bers when applying within 60 days of joining FPA.

The policy is underwritten by Standard Insurance Company, an industry leader in the disabilityinsurance market. This is Standard's Enhanced LTD Plan:

Following a 90-day elimination period, tax-free benefits of 60 percent of income to a maximum of$6,000 per month can be received if disabled from your own occupation or if you suffer a 20 per-cent loss of earnings from a covered sickness or injury. Benefits can be paid to age 65 and canbe adjusted by a built-in inflation adjustment.

In addition to the monthly benefit, an annuity contribution benefit (7 percent of pre-disability earn-ings\$5,000 per month maximum) can be paid to help save for retirement and a long term carebenefit (20 percent of pre-disability earnings\$2,000 per month maximum) can be paid to helpcover assisted living expenses.
