“I reached the land of the Antipodes and I recognized that I was gazing on the fourth part of the Earth. I discovered a continent inhabited by a multitude of peoples and animals, more than our own Europe, than Asia or even than Africa.”This remark may bring a smile to our lips today, but in 1497 the letter that the Florentine navigator Amerigo Vespucci addressed to Lorenzo de’ Medici caused such a stir that when Martin Waldseemüller drew the first map of America 10 years later, he named the continent after the feminized Latin version of Vespucci’s name: Americus Vespucius. This notable explorer trav-eled to the New World on 4 separate occasions, discovering Rio de Janeiro and giving Venezuela, or “Little Venice,” its name.

2012 marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of Vespucci. To create a pen commemorating this important anniversary, Visconti took inspiration from symbolic events and documents, primarily Vespucci’s travels themselves and Waldseemüller’s famous map of 1507. To reproduce portions of the map correctly, Visconti further perfected its scrimshaw technique on spe-cial ivory resin, introducing points and chiaroscuro into the graphic work, and embedded the scrimshaw into the pen’s surface. Crescent 2012 Collection Conklin created the Mark Twain 2012 Crescent Filler fountain pen as a replica of the original Crescent Filler fountain pen used and promoted by Mark Twain in the early 1900s. Now you can experience the same satisfaction and inspiration that Twain felt as he penned his extraordinary thoughts. In 1903, the legendary American author expressed the virtues of this unique self-filling pen in advertisements in which he stated: “I prefer it to ten other fountain pens, because it carries its filler in its own stomach, and I cannot mislay it even by art or intention. Also, I prefer it because it is a profanity saver; it cannot roll off the desk.” The Crescent Filler is known for its easy-to-fill reservoir. To fill the pen, simply press the crescent on the barrel to depress and empty the rubber bladder inside; as the crescent is released, ink flows back into the bladder. Conklin has fitted the Crescent with a two-tone steel nib featuring a corresponding crescent-shaped breathing hole, available in M, F, XF, B, and stub widths. The Crescent Filler fountain pen is now available in fresh, captivating resin colors. Rich gold plating adds a bit of elegance to the clip and band, which are engraved with the Conklin logo.
