CHAIR’S REPORT

Hello everyone. I’m almost back to normal after having my troublesome hip replaced – pain free at last. I’m pleased to say that Sylvia has also (at last) been making good progress with her eye problems and the consultant was very pleased with her at the latest appointment. This time last year, if you remember, some of us were snowed in. But spring has arrived and we can now look forward to the drought so let’s pray for rain to help our gardens and the wild life. Now to business. Although I was unable to attend, I am reliably informed that there was a reasonable attendance for our Cat Show in January 2012 and that there was a good time had by all. Anyone who is interested in helping to run the association as a member of the committee can contact our secretary, Jen Lacey, or put yourself forward at the next AGM which is to be held on 20th of May 2012 in Solihull. Kind regards Bill Edwards Chairman.

Editor’s Note

Once again, I take fingers to keyboard (with some help from quite a few paws, too) to bring you your club newsletter. An Easter issue this time and, as I write this, we are having some very unseasonal hot sunny weather - I do hope this isn’t the extent of our summer this year and there will be plenty more sunshine in the coming months!

Club news - As usual, this issue is bursting with “official” business for our AGM to be held slightly later this year on 20 May 2012. I hope some of you will be there – see pages 12-17. For cats who gained a new title in 2011, there will be a presentation of club rosettes to the owners during the meeting. A raffle and buffet can be enjoyed after the meeting. Anything you can bring as a donation to the raffle will be gratefully accepted by the committee! Don’t forget, subs were due from 1 January 2012 and must be paid in order to vote at the AGM. KCA website – The Korat & Thai breeding policy is now on the Breeders Page of the website. It offers some history on the breed which you may find interesting. Past newsletters are now available on there. Any feedback on the website, good or bad, is always welcomed. You can email me directly from the links on the website at www.korats.org.uk

Show News – the London Pet Show is being held at Earls Court Two on 12 & 13 May 2012. We have Korats on exhibition for “cuddles” on both Saturday & Sunday, this year. Do come and say hello. More KCA Show news, including our 6th Championship Show, on pages 4-6.

Newsletter articles – I still need articles for future issues. Please consider writing a short note (even half a page) about your pets and send it to me with some photographs. Did you see the 4 page Korat article in the March issue of Your Cat? It was called “Sunshine on a Rainy Day” and I thought it was well written, offering perspectives from pet owners, breeders and exhibitors. If anyone missed it and would like a copy, sent via email, just drop me a line on the email below. I will forward it to you. I will soon be adding it to the website too.

Thank you to all our contributors; please keep sending in your articles - and photos! The deadline for the next issue is mid July.

Enjoy your newsletter and I hope you all have a very Happy Easter!!! ☺

SHOW NEWS!

What a Day!! SHCS Show and K&TCA Show - 7 Jan 2012

You can’t get much further south in the UK without getting your feet wet! So travelling from Southampton to Stoneleigh Park, near Coventry, to arrive at the show for an 8.15am “vetting in” involves getting out of bed at what we show addicts call stupid o’clock! I got up at 4.00am (about an hour after I usually go to bed - I turned nocturnal years ago!) and my friend Fi and I were on the road by about 5.00am. I remember saying on the way up that I thought I had left my two best cats at home and had brought the two “scraggy cats” with me! Izzi was still a bit underweight, following the five kittens she had back in August; and Yinny, who had recovered so well from her eight kittens born in June (and no, that’s not a typo, she had 8!), she was positively verging on fat! At that point I was wishing I had stayed in bed and had no idea what the day would bring!!!

We arrived on time, more awake than when we left home, mainly due to several infusions of very strong coffee; sailed through vetting in and settled the cats down in their respective pens before huddling around the club table to cat chat with friends. I love our Breed show as it gives me the opportunity to meet up with cat friends at the other end of the country who I normally don’t meet at the usual shows, south of the M4. It was lovely to catch up with the ‘girls’; particularly with Sheryl who I hadn’t seen since June, last year. As I said earlier, I really wasn’t expecting to win much with what I called my “scraggy girls” – and then the results started to come in.....

First of all, the results of the Short-Haired Cat Society Show came in and I was really chuffed when Izzi beat a lovely Cornish Rex and gorgeous Devon Rex to win the Imperial Grand. This was her 5th certificate and so at last she was made up to Imperial Grand Champion. In July last year, I decided to stop showing her so she could be mated. We had been chasing this final certificate for at least six months, winning the Reserve certificate at her last 4 shows, so this was a fantastic result for us! Yinny surprised me even more by beating two super Cornish Rex girls and two lovely Russian Blues to win her first Grand Champion Certificate; she also beat Izzi to the BOB! Woo hoo! Then the K&TCA Show results began to go up on the boards, and Yinny gained her second Grand Champion Certificate! You hear show managers tempting you with “win two certificates at one venue” but I never dreamed we would, simply gave ourselves a better chance of winning one! There were six Korat Adults in the Breed Class this year and Yinny was awarded the Best of Breed! Again, two shows, two BOBs! Fantastic!

The Imperial results were really late coming in (there were 3 girls in the class who, according to the judge, were all stunning and worthy of the award). Izzi came in second to Mildred, a very worthy winner, and had yet another Reserve Certificate. I didn’t mind too much as she had already gained the title in the SHCS Show. ☺

So far, Yinny had won both BOB’s and two Gr Ch certificates. Izzi had won the SHCS Imp Gr and the Res Imp Gr in our show, but most importantly now had the title “Imp Gr Ch Jusarka Thai Lilac Promise”. The best show results I’d had in many a long time. I honestly didn’t think things could get much better. Then, Yinny won Best In Show Adult and was up for Overall BIS. It was a bit tense watching Marlene Buckeridge check over each of the four contenders, and then she went to Yinny’s pen, took her out and held her up – yay! Yes, she got it, she was Overall Best in Show. What a day! In light of my (insulting) comments about my girls earlier in the day, all I can say is that it’s a good job I’m not trying to be a korat judge!

KORAT & THAI CAT ASSOCIATION 6TH CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW - THE RESULTS

There were 16 Korats and Thais entered this year; 11 Korats, 3 Thai Blue Points, and 2 Thai Lilacs. Sadly, this was 6 cats down on last year. There was only one non-show (Korat) on the day, interestingly, the same cat who was missing last year! Solomon, bless him, is happy to explain why on page 18. Once again, we regained the intimacy of a breed show with all our

Perhaps you can help our Club to have an even better entry next year? Any of the committee would be very happy to help you show your cats. There are others who show too (not on the committee) who would love to help. We’re a very friendly bunch!

So I hope to see you there next year – with or without cats! Julie Cherkas – Jusarka Cats

NB At her next show Yinny got her 3rd certificate to gain the GC title – I’m so proud of my two girls ☺

LONDON PET SHOW – 12th & 13th May 2012 – Earls Court Two

Izzi and Yinny will be offering cuddles to their adoring public at the London Pet Show on Sunday 13 May. Jen Lacey and Jenny Day will be there on Saturday 12 May with two cuddly cats from Jen’s household. The LPS is a fantastic venue to see different animals. Last year I helped out with our club table and it was a brilliant day out; cats, dogs, rats, mice, rabbits, guinea pigs, meerkats, owls, reptiles, insects and lots more!!! It’s a great opportunity to promote our wonderful Korat & Thai breed to the public at this prestigious venue. Opening hours are 0930 to 1700. Please come along to support us.

See the details on the news page of our website www.korats.org.uk

Our Day Out at the Korat & Thai Cat Association Show George, (my daughter out-law) and I enjoyed our visit to the show in January. We like to go when weather and visits to son/brother out-law in Australia permit. We left home at a civilised hour, which you can do when you aren't actually taking any cats, and Stoneleigh is very central, with good motorway links and plenty of parking. It's great to catch up with old friends (Jen and I added up and decided we'd been meeting like that for about 30 years). It's also good to meet new Korat owners and to swap stories of what your Korat did recently - beating up next doors dog or demanding that the heating is turned up - it's only 26 degrees centigrade in here! George and I always award my "President's Choice" prize. This is the most random award in cat-show history as we give points for looking cute, talking nicely to us and not entirely hiding under the blanket (I would never make a proper judge). We always try hard not to find out which cat belongs to whom, but that doesn't always work if the owner is present, but at least that way we do manage to get a cat-cuddle. Anyway, it usually takes us a couple of hours of touring all the Korat and Thai exhibits, changing our minds many times before we settle on a favourite, great fun though. This year we decided on a very friendly and talkative Korat kitten called Serennol Napoleon Solo - I say kitten, but he was huge – nonetheless a gorgeous specimen of fur! It's always good to see so many Korats all together, and we were impressed with the number of Thai cats Lilac and Blue Points (I know Julie has a pretty much limitless supply). We would have liked to see a few more Thai lilacs (I do love those pink cats!) Hopefully with more Thais being shown it won't be too long before they are awarded Championship status. So, well done to all the organisers, exhibitors and helpers, and well done to all the cats - looking so well and putting up with the indignities of the day. Who would have thought, Jen, all those years ago that we would have our own (if shared) Korat show! Judith Jewkes – K&TCA President Editor’s note: There is a super photo of Judith’s “President’s Choice” prize winner in the colour pages.

News From Kesa’s Home Very warmest greetings to all our K.C.A. fellow members and their feline friends. Our Thai treasure Kesa is in good form and has got completely used to his life of luxury indoors. He has now imposed his routine on Robin and me, i.e. having the first part of his breakfast before getting on my lap when I have my early morning cup of tea, and put his collar on - he is very possessive about his collar - and then demanding the second half of his breakfast pouch from Robin. He will then settle for a while in a viewing position, in the porch, conservatory, or by an upstairs window, preferably where some warm sunshine is to be found. He does not much approve of visitors, who are usually greeted with a withering stare, and then perhaps briefly sniffed at before being ignored, while he tries to distract us by drawing attention to who really matters in this household. His favourite place for lounging or taking a catnap is on top of the boiler, quite naturally, or my bedroom chair, which has a fleece on it. He simply loves his biscuits, senior biscuits now that he is a middle-aged gentleman, and demands them at intervals very vocally, with varying degrees of success, though perhaps too much success. Before settling into his bed at night, he demands a game from me, and may even manage to extort one or two biscuits by way of a bribe. But we don't want him to get too portly, do we? I can't imagine life without a Korat, Kesa is now my fourth, but he would never accept any other cat of course.

From Jane, Robin and Kesa

P.S. Many thanks Julie, once again, for editing our excellent newsletter, and I hope you may drive over to us one day and meet the king of the castle. Jane Hard, K&TCA Vice President

Committee NewsAGM AND OTHER EVENTS

It’s SUNDAY 20TH MAY for the AGM. Once again we’re late! On that final Sunday of April, which is our usual slot, my mother has a birthday, her 92nd. It’s actually on the day and as I’m at a show the day before I’m sure I must commit to a family celebration. I know we have cake at our AGM tea, but I think my mother probably wouldn’t want a cat meeting as her birthday treat!

As it happens 29th April is also the date of a special event in the cat calendar too that some members may well be interested in:

FELINE BREEDERS’ GENETIC SEMINAR with both Prof Leslie Lyons and Prof Tim Gruffydd-Jones speaking.

It will be at the HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS, NEC, Birmingham, and for more information and online booking: http://www.langfordvets.co.uk/breeders_meeting.htm

A week after this I may be in Brno in the Czech Republic. This will be with the GCCF delegation for the WORLD CAT CONGRESS. This event combines a show (though I won’t be taking a Korat) a seminar, and business meeting. I ‘ve heard a rumour that we’ll be taken out for a special treat too. If all goes as planned and I’m part of the visit I’ll certainly share. (NB Those going pay their own way). Next year it’s GCCF’s turn to be host. So far it looks as if plans are centring on Cambridge. I’ll let you know more once there are definites.

Another action packed weekend follows. It’s the second LONDON PET SHOWThis year it’s at EARLS COURT TWO as it was found that Olympia simply wasn’t big enough to cater for all the families and other animals that made their way there. Korats are booked to be there on both Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th May to meet and greet an adoring public.Do come along and say hallo if you can make it to London. As well as it being the perfect opportunity to see all different sorts of animals as well as our cats, it’s also the perfect pet shopping opportunity!

So with all the other exciting happenings the AGM moves further into the spring, just before a certain Diamond Jubilee happens! We are in Room 5 in the Oliver Bird Ha l l again this year, which is through the main doors and at the top of the steps. ‘Cosy’, but cheap and we can spread into the adjoining room to eat.

From 1pm tea and coffee will be served as you arrive, so that business part of the meeting can be underway by 2.00pm.

The first ‘hot topic’ discussion follows from the Open Forum at GCCF February Council. Please read the GCCF report to find information. Our show has had falling numbers and relies very much on the same people participating. Can it be revitalised? This will be followed by an update on online registration applications and transfers, and news of an exciting new project for breeders

The AGM is the opportunity for you to comment on how the club is being run and bring forward new ideas. Of course, if you can’t make it to the meeting, you can send in your thoughts which can be contributed on the day.

Refreshments will again be on offer later

Anyone wishing to join the Committee, who wants to know more or needs advice on any Korat matter you can reach me by post, telephone or e-mail. All other Committee members are also very happy to be contacted.

GCCF News On February 22nd there was a GCCF Council meeting starting earlier than usual. This was to fit in an hour of free debate and allow anyone who wanted to come and listen and/or speak on the current show structure. Those of you exhibiting will know that now you enter a Certificate Class for the level of title you’re aiming at, rather than all cats being allowed in an Open and titled cats having a second chance at a certificate for a higher award. In addition there’s also the new level of Olympian for those cats already at Imperial level. To achieve a certificate here you compete against Imperial cats from all sections, except at a breed show. Feedback on what exhibitors thought of this was welcome. There were several ideas discussed. One club wanted to go back to more or less what we had previously; another thought that each tier of certificate could have bronze, silver and gold levels. There was some enthusiasm shown for the idea of a Junior Class and about the same for making more of Best of Breed Winners. Nobody wanted things to stay quite as we had them at present, but the only improvement that had clear majority backing was that more than one Olympian Certificate from Breed Shows should count at each level. The Board now has the task of reviewing what gained support and making definite proposals for further discussion. The intention has to be to encourage people to keep showing without scattering awards like confetti so they have little value, or are over complicated to administer. Definitely one of those situations in which not all people will be pleased, whatever the outcome. Changes for the Supreme Show format were announced. It will continue to be open to cats from abroad and other registries here, so no qualification will be needed to enter. However, the UK Grand Class will now be open only to cats who have an Imperial title, raising its value to top award once again. There will be an exception for those cats who have already achieved one UK Grand who are not Imperials so they are not disadvantaged. Judge reports have been discussed at K&TCA Committee and AGMs. However, the aim of ensuring that every cat attending a show should be guaranteed at least one critique was not achieved, and I felt I could not vote in favour of the recommendation that passed. Judges are to produce reports on the first three Breed Class winners and the Best of Breed if this is another cat. Also on the placed cats in titled classes. They may do more if they do not have a heavy load of cats in certificate classes, and exhibitors can approach a judge for comment after judging if they are available, or by email. There was some thought that the office could offer a service to direct emails rather than each judge having to provide an address, but this will have to be checked for practicality. However, I think the other GCCF innovations will score high on approval rating. Online input for registration is almost ready for testing. It will be trialed for Burmese registrations shortly and once glitches have been sorted will be open to all. This will bring changes. Mating Certificates will require a tick in a box and a percentage will be called in randomly for checking. If a cat is jointly owned either owner will be able to confirm details online. There will no longer be those very flimsy registration and transfer certificates generated by the old

Page 13: Spring 2012 - Korat · 2017. 12. 31. · Honorary Secretary and GCCF Delegate Mrs Jen Lacey, Cottage Cattery, 25-27 Stapleford Road, ... 7 Jan 2012 You can’t get much further south

9

computer system. They will be replaced by well designed cards. The breeder will have a litter registration record instead of white slips and each new owner will get kitten details on a certificate that carries the transfer on the reverse. There will be an incentive to transfer and it is hoped the facility to make it online should be available in the autumn. Another project put to Council that was liked was the possibility of offering Household/Pedigree Pet registration. It wouldn’t be a requirement for showing as it was accepted that local people like to bring in their favourite cat to a show just occasionally. However, for those who want to go for titles it would be needed. One advantage would be that the cat would have its colour and hair length defined in the process and not be entered on the whim of the owner according to the competition expected (a source of grievance in the HHP section). So a lot of changes ahead made possible by the new computer system and I know there will be more to come. Thanks to an injection of cash from the clubs, some innovative ideas from enthusiastic individuals and the dedicated volunteers who have given many hours of their time and expertise freely, GCCF is moving into the 21st century. And what about those finances? It wasn’t so long ago that there was danger of ends failing to meet. The first official trading period (10 months) had passed and the accounts were presented by Adrian Wood of O'Hara Wood, the accountancy firm that had scrutinised GCCF finances over a long period. The bottom line was an overall surplus for the period of £25,533. Mr Wood commented that he was seeing the accounts of a number of small businesses coming to terms with the current economic climate and GCCF was modestly successful. He was optimistic for the future especially as there had been an appreciable turnaround from a very difficult period two years ago, with income increased and costs cut. I think that wraps up the news to date. I’m pleased to be able to report so much that is positive and to be looking forward to more of the same. Jen Lacey (GCCF Delegate)

CLUB ROSETTES

Thank you to everyone who responded to my email for your 2011 club rosettes. These are awarded annually to all cats who have gained a new GCCF Title in the previous year. They are in the club colours with your cat’s name & new title on the tail ribbons and are now on order, ready to be presented at the AGM. For members who show their cats, I am going to do a points system to see who has the most successful show cats and also who is the most successful Breeder. This will start from January 2012. I am also going to start a new list for 2012 change of title rosettes so that we can order them in time to present them at our 2013 show.

Please remember to send me details of all your cat show results from January 2012.

My email address is [email protected]

Importing a Korat from Thailand: What a project, what an adventure!

When  Julie asked me  to write  about  this project  so  far,  I  thought:  “Well, where do  I  start?”    I suppose deep down, the starting point is my love for the Korat and the knowledge that all Korats originate  from  Thailand.  Another  reason  for  importing  is  the  fact  that  I  am  only  starting  in breeding with my  female  from Helen Hawkins, Gem,  and  I  felt  I had  some  space  for  a  second female. Gem herself has recent Thai parentage. But the true triggering moment was when, on the evening of the 7th of May 2011, I sat to read the KCA Korat and Thai Breeding Policy for the GCCF which Jen Lacey had e‐mailed and which, from page 6 onwards, explains about the importance of genetic diversity.

All the above mentioned reasons, added to the fact that my brother and his family visit Thailand and Laos  roughly every other year, made a  seed germinate  in my naive and  inexperienced, but nevertheless very determined mind: maybe there would be a way to locate a breeder in Thailand, purchase a kitten from him/her and ask my brother to bring the kitten back. Simple! The easy part was  convincing  my  brother,  who  was  more  than  happy  to  help  me  in  my  passion  for  the Korats...the much more difficult part was to find the perfect kitten!

In  July, when  I  took Gem  to  Jen Lacey’s boarding cattery  (because  she  still did not have a valid passport and we were away in France for 2 weeks),  Jen asked me to try and bring back a second kitten for her, if I could find one. It was reassuring to know that Jen would be there for advice and support  but  it  also meant  that  I  now  had  2  kittens  to find,  and  ideally,  they  should not be  related. Although you might  think  (like  I did)  that Korats being Thai,  they are everywhere  in Thailand, well, this  is not exactly the case.  In  fact,  as  the months went by,  I was  starting  to wonder  whether  I  would  succeed  in  finding  two  Thai purebred Korat kittens.

The main  ‘problem’  for  us  as Western  breeders  is  the fact  that  traditional Thai breeders do not  register  their cats  with  an  official  bona  fide  registry.  This  makes purchasing  pedigreed  kittens  difficult because you are

Khun Sunet’s breeding female

totally relying on the reputation and good faith of a breeder you don’t know at all and with whom you cannot even talk. So, after several months of research on the internet and through networking on Facebook, I found a breeder called Khun Sunet who  lived  in the Korat region and had kittens, but the main problem was that I was relying on a young Thai lady I had befriended on Facebook to help me communicate with this breeder who did not have a camera to take pictures, nor had she ever heard of registering a cat...  it was going to be difficult to carry the project through  in these conditions...

Now,  this  is where  those  of  you who  believe  in  fate will  agree with me  that  a  lucky  star was watching over us at this point because I had the luckiest of encounters! A German breeder called Bernd  Pollesche  (with whom  I was  also  corresponding  on  Facebook  and who  Jen  also  knows) recommended that I should contact a fellow Frenchman who  lives  in Bangkok and is also a Korat lover. His name is Stéphane  Monteilhet and he has lived in Bangkok for 10 years and always had

an interest in the Thai cats, having himself bought a Korat female and raised some kittens from her in  the Summer of 2011. He  recommended we bought our kittens  from Khun Preecha’s Thai Cat Centre  in  Amphawa,  about  1½  hours  away  from  Bangkok.  So,  on  the  4  October,  we  started exchanging e‐mails and found out that we shared many common beliefs about the Korats and how we’d like to breed them (for the health of the breed).

Merrie, Saothai and Jaydee

Now, 679 e‐mails  later  (as of 04‐02‐12),  the project  is going well,  thanks  to  Stéphane, who has been a godsend to us. He went to buy my kitten on 4 December and Merrie, Jen’s  kitten,  was  bought  on  25 December.  In  fact,  Stéphane  is  now looking  after  3  kittens  for  us,  as  we decided  to  keep  my  kitten’s  sister, taking  them  to  the  vet  for  their vaccines  and  blood  tests.  The  plan  is to  go  and  pick  them  up  at  the beginning of June from France, where they  will  land  with  my  brother’s Laotian  family  (change  of  plan  there, but  there have been  so many,  I have

lost count). This was our project in a nutshell so far. I will go into more details in another article, as we get closer to their arrival.

Korat Kittens in Poland The first Korat kittens have been born in Poland !!

On Saturday 24 March, four beautiful kittens were born from UK bred cats. Joanna the owner liked the cats that she had seen in the UK and chose to buy her breeding stock here. A triumph for our breeders.

There are three boys and a girl and all are rapidly gaining weight. I hope we wish Joanna success in the future, she is joining our club within the next few days when her feet touch the ground.

MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE KORAT CAT ASSOCIATION

The meeting was held at the Oliver Bird Hall, Solihull, on 15th May 2011.

Eight members were present: -

Dr C Bertram, Ms J Cherkas, Mrs J Day, Mr W Edwards, Mrs T Heath, Mrs J Jewkes, Mr B & Mrs J Lacey.

Mr Edwards opened the meeting shortly after 2 o’clock, after members had shared lunch together. He welcomed those present and thanked them for attending the meeting. 1. Apologies for absence were received from:- Mrs L Ashmore, Mr L & Mrs F Black, Mrs S Edwards, Ms S L Edwards, Mrs R Game, Mrs J Hard, Mr R Hard, Mrs J Jeffers, Mr W & Mrs A Locher, Mr R Miller, Mr S Parkin, Ms G Terry, Mrs C Tew, and Mrs S Williams Elliss. 2. Minutes of the meeting April 25th 2010 These had been circulated in advance via the Newsletter. Ms Cherkas proposed, Dr Bertram seconded, the approval of the minutes and they were signed without correction or amendment. 3. Matters Arising a) Item 14b) Ms Cherkas reported that 18 members had now opted for the Newsletter in pdf (electronic) form rather than having posted. This saved postage and paper costs and also time in actual production. b) Item 15) Associate membership The Committee had discussed this in respect of judges and those overseas who might want breed information and to share the Newsletter electronically, but not be full voting members. The outcome had been that it was thought complicated to administer with little benefit for the club. A member had commented by email that she thought it was could be expensive to offer if postage was involved, and it was agreed that there could be some judges who might expect this. However, any necessary SOP and showing information could be sent out via the BAC Secretary or obtainable from the website. There was no need for regular inclusion of those who were not members. 4. The Chairman's Report Mr Edwards had now completed his first year as Chairman. He commented that it was unfortunate he had some serious mobility problems and had not been able to participate in club events as much as he wished. He particularly missed being able to attend the show. He thanked the Secretary for all the work she did on behalf the club and congratulated the Newsletter editor and her team for another year of excellent publications. He appreciated the commitment of all committee members and the efforts they made for continued breed promotion. 5. The Committee Report Mrs Lacey remarked that the Committee had been back to its standard ten members over the past year, and there had been no need to make any co-options. There had been three committee meetings, with some members forming a core group of attendees and others coming when they could. The Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer had attended all, together with Ms Cherkas and Mrs Day. Dr Bertram had been at two, Ms S L Edwards, Mrs Edwards and Mrs Jeffers one and Mrs Heath hadn’t been able to come to any due to family commitments. The Secretary said she wanted to give priority to membership numbers. Subscriptions had been received for 3 more in 2010 than for 2009, taking the total to 116. Some breed clubs had more, but others were struggling to maintain even the 50 members required for a Council delegate when the breed had no other representation. She believed this was attributable to engaging the interest of members through the Newsletter and the Website. Not many members were involved in breeding or showing, but they enjoyed being part of the Korat & Thai community and that meant they kept supporting the club and thus enabling it to continue being active. Julie Cherkas, as Newsletter Editor and web manager, had made a major contribution and deserved credit. There had been participation in GCCF activities. The KBAC was quiet at present as candidates had completed their probationary period or dropped from the list. However, there was a new stewarding candidate, who had joined the club, and some interest had been expressed from other judges. Possibly there was a gap, as people waited to see the outcome of the revision of the judge appointment scheme that was in progress.

There had been a club table at the Supreme, as usual, and there had been good cover provided from committee members who had looked after it throughout the day. Also there had been an opportunity to participate in the GCCF’s World of Cats at the London Pet Show. This new event had attracted large visitor numbers and so was an excellent occasion for publicity. In January the club show had taken place and it was good that in spite of difficulties caused by the weather entry numbers had risen and new exhibitors had entered and visited. This was good news and was due in part to the encouragement and support they had received from committee members. Also thanks to efforts made the BIS pens had looked worthy of the title, and the penning of the breed with cats, kittens and neuters together had added to the enjoyment of the day. Through the year the Committee had worked on revising the rules, which had been presented to the membership for approval. The intention had been to make them relevant to 21st century procedures and practices. A breed profile had been produced for the GCCF website (still in need of illustration) and there was now a very detailed breeding policy, as required by GCCF. The Committee now communicated by email between meetings so that any issues arising could be speedily dealt with. The newsletter was available in electronic form and sent this way to some members. Also, the Treasurer could now take subscriptions via Paypal, and planned to make it possible to make payment via the website. The Secretary concluded that a fair amount of work had been done by all. The next major task was to get the Thai Lilac and Thai Blue Point promoted to Championship Status. 6. The Hon Treasurer’s Report Mr Lacey presented the accounts and said that the financial situation continued to be stable, due partly to the continuing good membership numbers and to committee members, and others, who helped the club out by making journeys and doing jobs at their own expense. This was much appreciated. Although there was only a very small surplus this year, £65.10, the club was continuing to support its newsletter, website, KBAC and show support commitments. There were sufficient funds to be a proactive club. The Treasurer commented that it was worthwhile in investing in such activities that served the membership, as monetary investment was currently worth little as the deposit accounts returned only a few pence of interest. The one disappointment this year was that there was no show accounts to present for the show held in April 2010. They were a show management team responsibility and at the stage of being checked and examined now, though any profit or loss would have to show in the next year’s accounts. This had been reported to GCCF, and the club and KBAC returns had both been made before 1st May 2011 and accepted. The accounts were approved by Dr Bertram, seconded by Mr Edwards. 7. Appointment of a qualified independent person to examine the accounts. Mr Lacey proposed, Mr Edwards seconded, that Mrs Curry continue in this role. This was agreed. 8. Subscription review It was proposed subscriptions should remain at the current level, but that there should be a reduction of £2 for those who opted to receive the Newsletter by email: £7 single, £9 double and £10 overseas. This was amended to take out the extra for overseas membership as it had been there solely to cover additional postage abroad. It was then agreed by all present and will be effective for subscriptions from 1st January 2012. 9. GCCF Computer Fund The Committee had promised a loan of £300 (10% of funds held) to GCCF to contribute towards an IT refresh that would enable online registration. This was endorsed by the meeting. 10. The Show Support Secretary’s Report Ms Sheryl Edwards was unable to be present at the meeting as she was unwell so there was no direct report. Mrs Lacey said she knew the personalised change of status rosettes once again seemed much appreciated. Those showing throughout the year, and reporting their successes, had seen a table of points collated in the last Newsletter. These showed the exhibits and catteries who had success in 2010. It was observed that the KCA sign had been returned at the show. 11. Delegate’s Report Mrs Lacey said she didn’t want to revisit the Council meetings in detail. She wrote reports immediately after each event for the GCCF website, and so was able to share these with members via the Newsletter. There wasn’t a lot more to add. There had been no events of particular Korat significance, not even new judges to appoint. The resolution proposed at a previous KCA AGM re close mating had

16

found a place in the GCCF breeding policy and made it to Council agenda in June, but the proposal hadn’t been taken as there was much other business to go through. The best GCCF news was that there had been a small surplus on income/expenditure shown in the 14 months audit carried out upon incorporation in February. This was a turnaround on a £50,000 deficit, plus the Supreme had made a modest profit once again. However, although raising prices and cutting expenditure had worked there were still going to be tough times. As kitten sales had declined, so had registrations. Streamlining procedures that had been begun would have to continue. The Investigation and Disciplinary process was expensive to administer, for example, and this was in line for review. On the plus side the new company was forming its own identity with its new logo, and in house printing. There would be a new Chairman appointed in June, as Mr Hansson had completed his 3 year term, and so probably a different style of management. The proposed changes in judge training with the section revisions were being well received in discussion, though the class restructuring was certain to be revisited. 12. Revision of Association rules There had been a question from a member over the removal of admission to the club via veterinary recommendation and there was some discussion on this point. However, as it hadn’t been used once in 30 years and the Committee needed to know a little about the person it was agreed to accept that it would be contact with a member that would introduce an applicant for membership. There was also concern that a suitable candidate for committee may not have accessible email and it was agreed to add the words ‘including conference call’ to rule 6h). The rules were then approved and there would be an application for the club name change to GCCF. 13. Korat and Thai Breeding Policy There was some discussion over continuing to breed from cats producing sick/deformed kittens even though the pair had a low co-efficient. There would be a referral to the deformity issues on page 13. A question had been raised about the use of the different registers, but it was agreed the registration policy would have to be rewritten when there was an application for Championship status for the Thais and as revision would take place then it need not be dealt with now. Dr Bertram agreed to revise the diagrams for clarity. The Breeding Policy was then approved by the meeting unanimously. 14. Election of President and Vice-President Mrs Day proposed, seconded by Mr Edwards, that Mrs Judith Jewkes continue as President. Mr Lacey proposed, Mrs Jewkes seconded that Mrs Jane Hard continue as Vice-President. There were no other nominations for either post so Judith and Jane retained office. 15. The Election Of Committee Members All committee members had been elected the year before so could continue if so wished. Mrs Heath chose not to do so as she felt she was unable to give sufficient time. Mrs Jeffers had nominated Mrs Williams-Elliss in the eventuality of a vacancy and she had indicated she was prepared to stand. It was agreed that she should join the Committee. 16. Election of Delegate and Substitute Delegate Mrs Lacey was proposed by Mrs Jewkes, seconded by Ms Cherkas as Delegate. Ms Cherkas was proposed by Mrs Lacey and seconded by Mrs Day, as substitute. There being no other nominations the positions were filled as above. 17. Hot topics for discussion a) Restructuring of classes at Shows There was no strong feeling about what form any changes should take. There was approval for the fact that each cat should enter only one certificate class and acceptance of the introduction of Olympian Classes at All Breed Shows. It was felt that having an Olympian Class for Imperial cats at breed show, with a cat needing 4 other certificates from all breed show could work, but the delegate would circulate Council agenda for discussion on any other proposals. b) New GCCF medals Mrs Lacey gave a brief description of these, and the idea of one attractive medal with the addition of bars was liked, as long as purchase remained optional. 18. Any other business None. The meeting finished at 3.45pm.

Solomon’s Diary – Chapter One Hello everyone. My name is Jusarka Solomon - you may have heard of me from Alice. I am sure she has explained that I am a gorgeous hunk of handsomeness, well versed in the manners of a cat bred to accompany royalty and the priesthood of our native lands. Any breach of etiquette is naturally due to my exposure to the plebeian lifestyle of the human. For example, she expects me to make my entrances and exits via a tiny hole in the French windows (which forgets to open if my head isn't exactly in the right place) instead of her being on 24 hour duty in order to open the door to let me in or out. She doesn't listen to my complaints regarding the absence of fresh food 24/7 either. Those who have read Alice's previous diary excerpts may have got the wrong impression about me. Let me tell you before I go any further that she is well known for exaggerating my wickednesses whilst minimising hers. Anyway, she has been a bit off colour recently and, having had a few rough months, is taking time off from literary endeavour so that she can spend more time sleeping than dictating. Our human suggested that I should take over her diary duties, to give her more time to get better. I haven't done this type of thing before, but the human tells me that if Alice can do it, then so can I. I have successfully cost the human nearly £100 so far this year. I think Alice mentioned that I have not quite got my Premier card thingy for being the most handsome neutered Korat hunk in the known universe. Well - the human keeps entering me for these shows, and I keep finding ways of not being able to go. Take note, my dear feline readers..... Firstly, make sure that when your human takes you to the whitecoats for your yearly checkup maybe a month before a show, you develop a reaction to the jabs. This results in a nice bald patch between the shoulder blades. In fact, I managed this two years running: it happened last year, but once again, this year, as my human was beside herself with worry about Alice (who the whitecoat had just hospitalised) she forgot to ask for a different part of my anatomy to be used as a pincushion. Secondly, wrap your body around your human's legs to such good effect that she almost trips over you, and in trying to stop herself squashing you flat, she will wrench her already 'dicky' back to such good effect that she won't be able to drive you to the show. Job done! The human has given us a new perch in the sitting room. She didn't mean to, of course. She has a drawing board set up so that she can draw/paint and watch the television at the same time. I found that it was fun scrabbling up the steep side of the board, which entailed putting my claws through all the bits of paper on it. Now how was I to know they were drawings she was silly enough to leave there? Once I had perfected the technique I taught it to Alice. We now sit, somewhat precariously, with a perfect view of what is happening on our next door neighbour's terrace. Pity that the human is less than happy with our new vantage point... I am dictating this to the human whilst basking on the terrace in the most unseasonably warm weather. I haven't quite got the hang of it yet, and keep having to have breaks to chase a passing fly, or to frighten one of the local dogs with my special emerald-eyed canine death ray. However, I have been promised a special treat of freeze-dried prawns before dinner, if I concentrate for a tiny bit longer. I have graciously considered this offer, and despite my well-known abhorrence of bribes, have reluctantly accepted the terms and conditions. This is not entirely altruistic, as I know that my human is being chased by my previous human, Julie C, to produce copy for the newsletter, and she may forget to tend to my every need while she has this enormous task hanging over her. I will take a few lessons from Alice before I try again, so I hope to give you more interesting stories, and let the cat out of the bag (what a stupid expression) about some of the weirder habits of our human. Best wishes to all my Korat friends and relations Solomon. (Aka Solly/His Solship/the Solmeister) Transcribed, as usual, by the devoted Human Slave, Caroline Bertram

£Treasurer’s Notes I am still sadly hooked on the theme of technology for this issue. I was reading in our local paper that we are going to get 'Super fast broadband' installed in the county in the next eighteen months and I just had a fleeting image of Postman Pat having to run down the path to the front door rather than walk! However, back to reality ~ thanks for the messages and comments regarding the newsletter delivery by e-mail, all the information has been passed onto Julie and so for some there will no longer be the rattle of the letter box but the electronic beep of incoming mail. No one objected to my passing e-mail addresses onto Julie although my previous life in the classroom did help in deciphering some of the handwriting!!! The paper issue is safe and still there for those who favour this method of communication so no worries there. My thanks to all of you who have sent in their subscriptions, pictures of cats, little news notes etc, all much appreciated. If you have any comments to make or have ideas for change, improvements, features, or anything, then please do let us know and we will see what can be done. Remember that you can pay with the PayPal system now [email protected] ~ some are now doing this, all I need to do is remember that it is there! It might be of interest to some to know that K&TCA has done its little bit to help GCCF also take a technological step forward by loaning it £300 for a five year period. The committee decided that a total upgrade of the IT system as proposed by the GCCF would be of benefit to all as it would help to secure accurate registration of cats/kittens and prevent some dubious owners making false claims on their cat’s heredity. Along with other cat clubs (75 to date) the loan will help to raise the £50k required. As the sun is now shining down nicely I suppose that I had best go and inspect the garden and contemplate on what I might do in the future. I wonder if virtual gardening involves such stress!!! This leads me onto the following piece of totally (ir)relevant information relating to technological discovery: After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, Lancashire scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago. Not to be outdone, in the weeks that followed, a Cumbrian archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, published a story in the Windermere Times: “Cumbrian archaeologists, finding traces of 130 year old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 30 years earlier than Lancashire” A week later, the Yorkshire Post reported the following: “After digging as deep as 30 feet in his backyard in Huddersfield, Amos Outhwaite, a self taught archaeologist, reported that he had found absolutely sod all. Amos has therefore concluded that 150 years ago, Yorkshire had already gone wireless.” Enjoy the Spring. Brian, your Yorkshire Treasurer. Brian Lacey (Treasurer) [email protected]
