    Spring 2011

    Presidents WelcomeGreetings NRLI Alumni!!!!

Id like to welcome all of you to the 5th edition of the NRLI Alumni Association

eNewsletter. It has been a busy year! I first want to say congratulations to NRLIClass X, who recently graduated in April. It was a wonderful ceremony at Ti AmoRestaurant in Gainesville. Seventeen fellows representing both private and publicnatural resource entities successfully completed the program, and they will be a wel-comed edition to our growing Alumni Association of over 180 alumni.

We wrapped up our first NRLI Alumni Class Challenge this year, and thanks to yoursupport, raised over $1400 to go towards scholarships for future NRLI fellows. Hav-ing never done this before, I think we are off to a great start, and hope to expandour efforts in the future. I realize times are still challenging for many of us economi-cally, but your continued support of this great organization is much appreciated.

As we come upon summer, it also means that the NRLI Class XI session is not tofar away. I encourage you to check out the Class XI schedulein hopes that you willbe able to make it to one or more of the sessions. Alumni participation is alwayswelcomed as it helps strengthen networking opportunities with past and currentfellows, and is a great way to keep up to date with current natural resource issuesaround our state. Just a reminder, if you think you have a relevant topic for an up-coming session, dont hesitate to let the NRLI project team know about it. They are

always looking for new ideas, and enjoy collaborating with alumni on planning future

    sessions.

Another meaningful way you can help support NRLI is by promoting the programand recruiting potential fellows for future classes. Who better to sell the many

benefits of NRLI than those who have experienced it first-hand. If you have a col-league or friend that you think would be a good fit for the program, contact BruceDelaney at [email protected].

Finally, I know its been said before, but Ill say it again... your involvement is what

keeps our Alumni Association strong, and makes this organization so rewarding.Dont forget to submit an article for the next eNewsletter; we want to know what

you are up to these days! Also, by staying active with your membership dues ($25-,$125-lifetime) you help support alumni-sponsored events such as the annual NRLIgraduation ceremony. Dont forget to visit the NRLI Alumni Association Websiteto download NRLI promotional items, view past eNewsletters, and stay up to dateon Alumni Association announcements.

Enjoy the eNewsletter! I hope everyone has a wonderful summer, and if you haveany questions, please dont hesitate to contact me.

This years NRLI Alumni Association-sponsored fieldtrip was to Poe Springs Park. The theme of the tripwas balancing springs protection with visitor use. Dr.Bob Knight ofWetland Solutions, Fritzi Olson withCurrent Problems, and Jim Myles, from AlachuaCounty Environmental Protection Departmentwerekind enough to speak to the group about springs ecol-ogy and management, the history associated with thepark, and past and current restoration projects to helpprotect the springs.

NRLI Alumni Association Sponsors Professional Development Opportunity

Many organizations promoting conservation and environmental sus-tainability are turning to social marketing to help understand andactively change the behaviors of the public. But what is social mar-keting? Is it just advertising with a socially responsible message? On Friday April 15th, the FNRLI Alumni Association sponsored aprofessional development opportunity for alumni to help answerthese questions. Fourteen alumni attended to learn about socialmarketing, an approach to behavior change that is often used in en-vironmental programs. Among the goals of the workshop were forparticipants to learn about the FOUR Ps of social marketing

(Product, Price, Placement and Promotion) and to understand someof the fundamental tools used in the field such as focus groups and audience segmentation. Participantswere enthusiastic about the agenda and it has already led to a new initiative to use social marketing to re-duce creek pollution in Gainesville with the Alachua County Environmental Protection Department. Wewelcome suggestions for future professional development workshops as it is a way to strengthen NRLIalumni skills and networking as well as raise money for the Alumni Association. If you have interest inlearning more about social marketing and how it may be used in your programs, contact Paul Monaghan [email protected]
