Hello and welcome to the spring issue of Time for Tots! It’s been a particularly cold winter this year and we’ve been plagued with colds and bugs in our house for much of it so it’s a relief to finally be welcoming in the spring and warmer weather. With Mothering Sunday occurring later this year we’ve brought you a special Mothering Sunday feature this issue on pages 20 to 22. As part of the feature we’ve got 2 fantastic special offers with local beauty salons for you to treat your mum, partner or even yourself to a little pampering this spring. Be sure to check them out – Infinity Beauty on page 21 and Escape Beauty and Wellbeing on page 22.As has become customary in our spring issue we’ve also brought you our Easter feature (pages 6 to 7) with details of activities and events taking place locally. We’ve got tickets to give away to the Easter event at Rockingham Castle so don’t miss the competitions on page38.This issue also sees the return of our ‘Party Services’ section. I can personally recommend all 4 suppliers of party services so if you’re planning a party anytime this year do check them out. Also returning this issue is our ‘Where to change and feed your baby’ information on page 30. An invaluable guide for all new mums planning a trip into town!We have many other interesting articles and advertisements of course so we hope you find time this spring to put your feet up and enjoy a good read! Tots NewsNew Children’s Clothing Agency

Owned and run by mother and daughter team, Pauline and Heidi, Bearly Worn opened its doors in October 2010, on the High Street

in Thrapston. Bearly Worn specialise in quality secondhand children’s clothes (and some new) for newborns up to age 11. Designer labels like Ralph Lauren, D&G, Catimini, Miniman and Jean Bourget, hang alongside popular high street brands such as Gap, Boden, Joules, Monsoon, Timberland, Next and John Lewis.

With children growing so quickly and having expanding wardrobes, bringing your child’s outgrown clothing into the agency means you can recoup some of the cost. Bearly Worn accept clothes in good condition and will endeavour to sell them for you either in their Thrapston shop or through their online store: www.bearly-worn.co.uk. When your items sell you will get 40% of the sale price. Being a small shop they are unable to accept large nursery items but they can photograph the items and sell them on their website.

If you’re looking for good quality, stylish children’s clothing at affordable prices then Bearly Worn is well worth a visit. They are receiving new items daily so it is worth making time to pop in and check out what they have.

New Secret Venuefor Tea Time Treats

New mum Lindsay Butcher has transformed a derelict garden studio

into a beautiful boutique venue to host small groups and parties. Seeing a gap in the market for groups wanting private space to celebrate in style, yet without paying through the nose for the privilege, Lindsay set about creating a quirky and comfortable space that serves as a ‘home from home’ in the pretty and peaceful village of Grendon. The elegant studio hosts vintage-style tea parties, complete with fine bone china and lashings of cake, and is suitable for groups of up to ten. Weather permitting, tea can be taken on the sunny deck or in the gorgeous garden.Lindsay offers a variety of packages to suit all budgets. ‘I want to make the studio accessible to groups of mums like me who want to treat themselves to somewhere nice for lunch and without having to worry about their babies disturbing other customers’. The studio is equipped with a tot-friendly area with soft mats and toys.So if you are planning a business meeting, birthday celebration, hen party, baby shower or just a good get together with pals, check out the Old Garden Studio at: www.theoldgardenstudio.co.uk or call Lindsay on: 07968 222532.

Keep Fit Classes for Mums

Introduce your little one to the joy of movement and music

Most little girls dream about being a ballerina or a princess. We at the Barbara Hooton School of Dancing can’t guarantee that she will marry a prince or be a famous dancer, but we can offer the opportunity of learning to dance; experience the joy of movement and music and even perform on stage as perhaps Princess Aurora or a magical fairy.

We offer classes in Ballet and Tap in a variety of locations for children from the age of four.

Dancing is not only very beneficial as exercise, it also teaches each child discipline, confidence and deportment. We pride ourselves on our breadth of experience and all our teachers are fully qualified. We are dedicated to the children in our care and endeavour to draw the best out of each child. We like to ensure that pupils learn in a structured and quiet way, following a national syllabus leading to exams as they get older. We also produce a show biannually in order to demonstrate our talents and at the same time raise funds for charity.

Ballet is a beautiful art form, it is demanding and requires commitment, but is so, so rewarding. Tap, whilst really hard work, is such fun but, initially, all classes are designed to be enjoyable and instructive; learning the basic steps and movements leading to more complicated and creative work. We all have to start at the beginning; who knows where our next star might come from!

Baby and Toddler swimming has become a very popular activity in the

UK and research has shown babies who swim are far better developed socially, mentally and physically. Teaching your baby the joys of swimming is a bonding and fun experience for both parent and child. Through gentle encouragement and lots of praise you will soon see your baby’s progress. Swimming from an early age is beneficial to natural development and co ordination. A good time to start is when baby is between 3 and 6 months old.In a weightless environment babies can move more freely without restriction. This means they develop more muscle tone and strength and can exercise joints making them more flexible. It is also reported that babies that swim regularly often have improved appetites and sleeping patterns. Spending quality one to one time with total focus on each other in the pool, having fun and relaxing time together is extremely beneficial to baby and adult. Social benefits include strong communication, interaction and learning to share and take turns. Natural Instincts – Babies are born with natural swimming reflexes such as the ‘gag reflex’, which allows them to hold their breath under water and the ‘amphibian’ reflex which enables the whole body to move through the water. By using different techniques and moves swimming can stimulate their natural reflexes into voluntary actions as they develop. The first visit to a pool should be as relaxed as possible, letting your little one get used to the different sounds, smells and sights in this new environment. A good way to introduce your baby to the swimming pool and really maximise the benefits is to join a swimming course or programme, there you will have the opportunity to meet other parents and to learn specialised skills specifically for your baby’s development stage.

Parents do not need to be strong swimmers and some parents attend as they do not want their own fear of water to be passes onto their children. A good lesson structure should include many different activities with fun action songs, learning how to hold and move baby on their front and back, learning safety and wall skills and developing submersion techniques and breath control. All activities should be adapted to suit your baby’s age, experience and developmental stage. Lessons should be conducted in a playful, stress free environment allowing baby to progress at their own pace. Water safety is paramount and considered to be an essential life skill, unfortunately drowning is still a large cause of infant fatality in the UK, however it is believed that if children are familiar with the aquatic environment from an early age they will remain relaxed and have a better chance of survival if they were ever to be in a potentially dangerous situation in water.Editorial by Melanie Hammond and Carly Parton, Infant Aquatics who run specialised baby and toddler swimming courses in Wellingborough, Wollaston and Kettering. Time for Books: Waterstones Book ReviewWaterstones have selected four fantastic books for our reader panel to review this issue - all of which have proved a big hit! As usual a big thank you to all our reviewers.

For Babies...Snuggle BunnyLambert & Goldhawk £9.99

A hardback book with a soft glove puppet attached. You stick your hand in and move it about, and then, as if by magic, Snuggle Bunny comes to life. As you follow the rather charming bed-time story, he becomes a VERY sleepy rabbit indeed. Our parent said: “My baby and I absolutely loved this book! So much so we’ve been out to buy it! The delightful rhyming bedtime story combined with a cute, soft, glove puppet to bring the story to life make it a firm favourite. I was worried the puppet would be too stimulating at bedtime but not at all. The story is just the right length for a baby’s bedtime story.”

Rating: 5/5Joanne, Mum to Chloe, age 10 months

For Toddlers...

This charming board book from award-winning illustrator Axel Scheffler is now available in a jigsaw book format. Children will love reading about Lizzy the Lamb, who enjoys skipping, playing with the geese and most of all, jumping as high as she can! Bright illustrations, rhyming text, five fantastic four-piece jigsaws and a fun activity on the final spread will make this a storytime and playtime favourite. Our parent said: “My son thought this book was a real bedtime treat as it’s a story and puzzle in one. He asked me where the Gruffalo was so he is obviously familiar with the illustrator! It is short and sweet with good rhyming words and I found it a really relaxing way to settle my boy down at the end of the day. It’s nice to interact with a few (easy) jigsaws at bedtime! Will read this one again.”

Rating: 4/5 Greg, Dad to Freddie, age 2

For Pre-schoolers...

Mr Wolf’s PancakesAuthor Jan Fearnley£7.99

Mr Wolf fancies some tasty pancakes but he doesn’t know how to make them. Asking his neighbours is no use - they’re a mean and horrible lot who refuse to help. Poor Mr Wolf. He has to work it out, all by himself. So what happens when these nasty neighbours want to help Mr Wolf eat his delicious pancakes..? Our parent said: “This is a twist on the classic “The Little Red Hen” book I remember from my childhood - but with a slightly different outcome! Definitely a hit with my 4 year old son who has asked for this particular book every night since!” Rating: 5/5

Sarah, Mum to Oliver, age 4

This Season’s Choice

When Duck finds an egg of his own he’s delighted: it’s the most beautiful egg in the world! But all the other birds think it’s a very odd egg indeed and everyone’s in for a BIG surprise when the egg hatches. Children and adults alike will love the witty outcome and Emily Gravett’s playful watercolour and pencil illustrations. Our parent said: “My 2 (nearly 3) year old and I LOVED this book. The illustrations are really beautiful, the suspense builds quickly - hard work when little fingers want to flick the pages before you’ve read them – and the outcome is brilliant. The big surprise at the end caused wide eyes followed by fits of giggles. I would recommend this book for all ages. A real gem.” Rating 5/5

Time for MumAs we look forward to Mothering Sunday,

a day when we all hope to be pampered and have a break from our normal chores, we take a look at the history of the day, how 3 mothers at different stages of motherhood will be spending it and ask several little ones ‘Why do you love your Mummy?’….

Mothering Sunday is actually a Christian Festival which dates back to Roman times when it was a day to honour the Virgin Mary. Since Roman times it has fallen on the fourth Sunday in Lent so the date is determined by the Church calendar each year.In the 16th century people made a point of visiting their ‘mother church’ on Mothering Sunday which is their nearest big church and typically the church in which they were baptised. People that did this were said to have gone ‘a mothering’. In Victorian times it was a day when domestic servants were given the day off to visit their own mothers and families.By the 1930’s Mothering Sunday celebrations had all but stopped but were revived by American and Canadian Soldiers serving abroad during the second world war. They began celebrating what they referred to as ‘Mother’s Day’ on the second Sunday in May and continue to do so to this day. The British and Irish however on reviving the festival, decided to revert to the original date of the fourth Sunday in Lent, and so it remains.

In recent times the day has become more Americanised, the date hasn’t changed but it is more commonly referred to as ‘Mother’s Day’.

LouiseMum to Joshua, 10 monthsThis year will be my very first Mothers Day so I’m really looking forward to it. I have no idea what we will be doing so am looking forward to a surprise on the day. I’m hoping the day will start with a lie in followed by breakfast in bed if I’m lucky! Growing up I remember pampering my Mum, cooking her meals, bringing her cups of tea, and generally making her feel appreciated and special so I’m hoping for a similar day myself. As Joshua is too young to have a clue what is going on this will of course be down to my partner. Gift wise, flowers or chocolates would be nice or a beauty treatment would be lovely. I look forward to the day when Joshua makes his own card and picks his own gift to make it really special.

Sundays now. On previous years my day has begun with a cooked breakfast in bed – and I’m hoping this year will be no exception! The children usually bring me the hand-made cards and gifts they’ve made at school and nursery with breakfast, although more often than not I’ve already had a sneak preview as the children are far too excited to keep them secret when they bring them home! Giving me the things they’ve made is definitely one of the highlights of the day for them and me – the delight on their faces and my daughter Beth jumping up and down on the spot in excitement is priceless. We like to go to church on Mothering Sunday, although whether we’re able to get up and out of the house on time with 3 children this year remains to be seen. The Mothering Sunday service is extra special with the children handing out posies to all the mothers in the congregation. After Church we usually enjoy a family meal somewhere. This could be cooked by my husband at home (he enjoys cooking and luckily for me is very good at it) or last year we went out to a restaurant with my Mum and mother-in-law. My husband will undoubtedly plan something special for us, although probably not until the day before knowing him! He usually “comes good” with his plans though so I’m confident he will this year too. Whatever we do the emphasis will be on enjoying family time together and hopefully on me not lifting a finger! I will of course catch up with my Mum at some point throughout the day to thank her for all she does for me. In previous years my parents have joined us for church and a meal so may well do this year (depending on what offers they get from my siblings!)

AdeleMother of 3, grandmother of 4Almost 60 years ago when I was a little child I remember going to Sunday School on Mothering Sunday and each child was given a daffodil with tinfoil wrapped around the bottom half of the stem to give to their Mum when they got home. To me it seemed the most beautiful thing in the world, it was as good as a whole bouquet of flowers and I couldn’t wait to give it to my Mum, I ran all the way home. Mothering Sunday was always a time to thank my Mum for all she did for me and in time to enjoy being on the “receiving end” as I became a Mum and my three children gave me the lovely cards that they had made at school plus flowers or chocolates. As with most things, Mothering Sunday has become more commercialised with shop bought cards and presents. Years ago the card and present were usually made by the child and the value of the gift was in the effort that went into making it, the sentiment has remained largely unchanged though. My children have all flown the nest now living busy lives of their own but with 2 new grandchildren this year I’m hoping to spend it surrounded by family, having a lovely Sunday lunch and not being the one clearing away and washing up at the end of it!

It is surprising how busy a normal day can be caring for little ones. Fitting it all in and

spending special time with your child is often a struggle. As much as you want to get to your local photographer’s studio it is the last thing on your list so Firetree Photography offer a home visit service. We asked Kyra what to expect...

How Long does it take? “It takes about 15 minutes to set up our mini studio, and we spend up to two hours with you. We usually stay until we know we have the photographs you want.”

Do you need much space?“We have a backdrop and a couple of lights, these are compact and take up a small amount of space, we usually work in your living room. We arrive and decide with you where best to set up. “

What if the child is crying or asleep?“That’s the beauty of our home visit service, I can wait and have a cup of tea! If you want a break we can stop and come back to it. If your baby is asleep, a sleeping baby makes a super photograph and allows me to capture in extreme close up the tiny fingernails and toes!”

What if my child doesn’t want a picture taken?“Most children are initially shy, I have three children of my own and am very good at relaxing and playing games, a forced smile from a child is not good, I get laughter and genuine smiles from even the shyest of children.”

It’s not a pro studio how do I know you are trained?“I have worked alongside my father in studios since I was a child. He was a professional photographer all his life and taught me everything I know, we are a family business, my mother Sylvia is a pro photographer too!”

I take a good photograph so what am I paying for that’s different?“To take a good photograph with fine detail, colour and tone you need very good lighting, lenses and camera equipment. The flash from a compact camera is very harsh and not easy to control. Just like a studio we have top of the range flash units, diffuse boxes, cameras and lenses. This means we can control the light and use it creatively to get fantastic images. We also use different lenses for different effects. We can take very extreme close-ups with our macro lens for example that will show every little lash on your baby’s eyelid, even iris detail!”

Is it expensive?“As we don’t have a studio we can’t take 20 portraits a day so we do charge a sitting fee, this covers our time and expertise, but as we have no overheads we can offer a full range of products at considerably reduced prices. We disagree with any hard sell so you never feel under pressure to purchase anything.”

You can see Kyra and Sylvia’s work online at: www.firetreephoto.co.uk and their work is displayed on the walls at Mocha Mamas in Kettering.

Domestic Abuse

One in four women will be the victim of domestic abuse within their lifetime. Two women a week will be killed as a result of domestic abuse, yet domestic abuse is often a hidden crime. Victims don’t come forward because of shame, self blame, love or because they are too scared. We at Adams Moore can help. Making that first call can often be the hardest step, but we can help and support you through the entire process. Domestic abuse is not something that anyone, man, woman or child, should ever have to experience or accept.

What is Domestic Abuse?Domestic abuse is any act which leads a person to fear for their safety and that is intolerable. This can include non-violent acts, forced marriages and so-called ‘honour crimes’.

What help is available? If you, or someone you know, is suffering from domestic abuse, then there are several measures that can be taken to protect you. A family lawyer will be able to talk you through your options. It may mean that an order is required from the court.

What court orders are available and what do they mean? There are two main court orders available: Non-Molestation Orders and Occupation Orders. These are more commonly known as ‘injunctions’.

A Non-Molestation Order tells the person 1. who has been abusive that they must not do certain things such as be violent or threaten violence. For example, recent orders have prevented the abuser from texting the victim or contacting them on facebook. It is a criminal offence to breach these orders and if it occurs the Police should be contacted immediately. An Occupation Order removes the abuser 2. from the home and ensures they don’t return. The Police are able to arrest the abuser if they breach the order.

Both orders can be applied for at the same time, or on their own.

How do you apply for these Orders? It is straightforward to apply for these orders and a family lawyer will be able to take you through the process.

Typically the court lists an initial hearing within a few days and you will be required to attend. Having to attend court on any occasion can be very daunting, particularly for sufferers of domestic abuse, but the first hearing will be very short and you will not have to speak. The abuser may or may not attend the hearing. If they don’t, the Judge can still make the order to protect you. If the abuser attends and denies the allegations, the Judge will usually make the order but will list your case for a longer hearing. If your case is very serious, then it is possible to apply for an order without telling the abuser. This is called an ex-parte order. If you obtain an ex-parte order, there will need to be a further hearing to give the abuser the opportunity to have their say.

How long do these orders last?Usually the orders will last for six months to a year. If the problems continue then you are able to apply to the courts to extend the order.

I don’t think I can afford to pay a lawyer? The good news is that everyone is eligible for legal aid for these orders, however, depending on your income or savings you may have to pay a contribution.

Can I protect my children at the same time?Yes. Children can also be included to ensure their safety. There are also other applications which can be made at the same time. For example, if you were worried that the abuser would try and take your children away from you, you can apply for an order to prevent this.

Sometimes it can be difficult to find a lawyer to help with these difficult issues, but here at Adams Moore we prioritise cases of domestic abuse. Urgent situations can be seen the same day. We know that domestic abuse doesn’t just occur during office hours, which is why our telephone lines are open 24 hours a day.

www.homeworkingmums.com

I first heard of Partylite 10 years ago when I went to my first party and fell in love with the products, I went to 2 parties in 3 weeks and spent a fortune! The consultant suggested I join as you get a free kit worth £300, there are no sales targets to hit every month, no walking the streets delivering orders, and you get 40% off anything you want to buy! As there was no obligation or hard sale involved I had nothing to lose. I gave it a go and I surprised myself! For a very shy person who didn’t do public speaking I really enjoyed it. I have 2 small boys with a busier social life than I have and a husband who works in London on a shift pattern, but Partylite fits in around everything. I can chose when I work and how often. After I had my children I lost a lot of self confidence and doubted whether I would be able to get back out in the wide world and cope juggling work and children, but Partylite helped me and boosted my self confidence. I get to be me again for just a few hours during the day or evening. My kids always come first - if they are ill I’m always here and I always do the school run. Partylite is a great company to work for, they really look after their consultants. There’s always lots of free stuff up for grabs, a cash bonus every month and regular outings such as a trip to London. I’ve also been lucky enough to go to Marrakech, Malta and Amsterdam and I’m looking forward to a trip to Crete in May - all inclusive! So if you need a confidence boost or just want to get out of the house for a few hours a few times a week and meet people, I will happily have a coffee and a chat with you with no obligation. Just give it a go, don’t doubt yourself YOU CAN DO IT!
