It was our first time co-locating with WEMCO, and the results were excellent. The ability to bring in world-class speakers, as well as the networking with WEMCO members, definitely increased the enjoyment and productivity for the RWMA attendees. We have reviewed the questionnaires turned in at the end of that meeting, and the overwhelming majority of those responding were very positive about the experience on all levels. We are using these results to decide on possible future co-located meetings with WEMCO. During the Full Member Meeting, there was an objection to holding the BUSINESS EXCHANGE that normally occurs after the official closing of this meeting. Because there was a question of whether or not this violated anti-trust laws by having this business exchange, it was voted at that time to suspend this part of the meeting until we could have a legal review of our procedures. AWS has now received an opinion by legal council that included slight revision of our form, and otherwise said that business exchanges can be held without violating anti-trust laws if done within the revised framework. We will follow this new procedure at the next member meeting. (New format is directly below my message.) I want to thank all those involved for not only bringing this point up at the meeting, but in helping to solve the problem so that we can put this valuable tool back in the RWMA meetings. RECESSION: So what has the recession of 2009-2010 taught us? In an article by Dave Carpenter in the Chicago Sun-Times, he observes that during this time companies are increasing employees’ workloads and putting higher priority on productivity. In other words, when sales are really down and indirect costs remain fairly constant, we as manufacturers have to find a way to cut costs. Many companies have cut or reduced core benefits such as life insurance and matching workers’ 401(k) plan contributions. Others have renegotiated their lease costs with landlords who face empty buildings all over the neighborhood. Most have cut employees. And of course the obvious renegotiation of prices from our suppliers to nibble at un-avoidable expenditures has become a daily exercise. The good news is that from all indicators, we are coming out of the recession. Dr. Jeff Dietrich, Institute for Trend Research, spent several hours showing all of the methods they use to measure present and predicted future business conditions. His graphs and numbers conclude that we are coming back, but possibly at a slower rate than has been seen in past recession exits. So hang in there. Projects that were put on hold last Spring and Fall are now coming back on the table. As our volumes rise, maybe the cost-cutting lessons of the recession will leave our companies leaner and meaner – and profitable. It often takes a hit on the head to drive a point home. RWMA COMMITTEE UPDATE

RWMA Membership Committee. The RWMA Membership Committee met on March 11, during the RWMA Annual Meeting. It was a very productive meeting. The Committee made a motion to create a “Welcome Packet” for new RWMA members, that will outline all of their member benefits. This will be included along with their Membership plaque, logo sheet and Membership pin.

The RWMA Membership Recruitment Sub-Committee, previously governed by the RWMA Marketing Committee, will now be a subcommittee of the Membership Committee.

It was also noted that 11 companies have become RWMA members since April 2009. The current RWMA members number 84.

The Membership Committee also scheduled their teleconferences for the remainder of the year. Those dates are:

Tuesday June 8th, 2:00pm EST Tuesday September 7th, 2:00pm EST Tuesday December 7th, 2:00pm EST

Page 9: Spring 2010 Newsletter - American Welding Society · 2015-03-23 · He was also the Group Leader of RWMA Video Task Group that produced the training video “Introduction to Resistance

RWMA Technical Committee. The RWMA Technical Committee met on March 12.

Agenda items that were discussed included: Designer Guide for Resistance Welding: All draft chapters were completed. However only 2 ‘short-forms’ have been submitted. The final completion date is still pending. The “Designer’s Guide to Resistance Welding” is being developed to provide sufficient technical detail to enable a Product Designer to apply resistance welding in basic assembly configurations. In the case where applications would become technically complex, the listed references in the guide would serve as a basis for the designer to conduct his/her own investigation to complete the design.

The Technical Committee also scheduled their teleconferences for the remainder of the year. Those dates are:

Tuesday June 8, 2010 Tuesday September 14, 2010 Tuesday December 14, 2010 RWMA Marketing Committee. The marketing committee met on March 12,2010 for the full allotted time. Although we were excited about our ad campaign in Machine Design magazine promoting the resistance welding process, the results were less than stellar. The committee will explore the possibilities of using Fabricator or Metal Forming magazines for promotion. We do need to expand our efforts with blogs and open forums as a method to get resistance welding in the spotlight. The resistance welding column in the Welding Journal is another opportunity that we need to take advantage because there is no cost to the RWMA. We continue to send out our informational DVD to technical and trade schools to educate students about the career opportunities with resistance welding . We will continue to pursue these trade schools that should be addressing the potential that a career in resistance welding has to offer. As always we are always in need of articles for our newsletter. “Did you Know?”, and “From the Field” articles are a great way to discuss real issues that could be pertinent to our everyday challenges in the sales world.

The Marketing Committee scheduled their teleconferences for the remainder of the year. They will meet on:

• Monday, May 10th 4:00pm EST • Monday Sept 13th 4:00pm EST

RWMA Education Committee. The RWMA Education Committee met on March 11.

The Committee scheduled a teleconference for May 17th, at 4:00 p.m. EST.

DID YOU KNOW?

Submitted by Danny Thomason Dimplex Thermal Solutions

Kalamazoo, Michigan

Proper cooling on your resistance welding application is critical for weld quality and electrode life. There are several ways to cool your resistance welders, water to air re-circulator, cooling towers, city water and closed loop chillers. Without proper cooling you will experience irregular or poor quality welds due to hot, mushroomed

tips and overheated transformers. Short tip life on spot welders will increase downtime to dress & change tips.

The most common form of cooling used today is simple city water. While this is often satisfactory, it can be very expensive. Most plants pay to purchase the water, and then pay again to get rid of it in the form of sewer costs. With the growing concern of water consumption in the country, many companies have chosen to go to closed loop water chillers. Water chillers offer the best temperature stability that can be provided, in turn providing the best quality and repeatability of a weld. A closed loop chiller also eliminates all of the thousands of gallons of water that are sent down the drain every year.

Regardless of the cooling method you choose, remember that proper cooling of your resistance welding equipment will, in the end, provide better quality parts and make for happier customers.

Q&A

FROM THE FIELD

In the 20 years NSRW has been in existence outside of Birmingham, AL we have been required to service a diverse customer base. From a field service point of view NSRW is committed to help its customers produce product at the highest level of quality. Recently, we have been invited into multiple facilities where a documented welding plan was nonexistent. This plan consists of up to date machine set-ups (weld force, weld schedule, actual and design values for

force/current/nugget), accurate available consumable part lists, training of operators/maintenance (Because they both have a hand in that weld control), and a documented quality check. This overall plan can be applied to all resistance welding applications and when carried out affectively makes weld tooling costs drop and overall quality increase. The level of detail require is application and manpower based, but the positive impact is proven.

CONGRATULATIONS BRYAN DeCORTE – RWMA SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

Congratulations Bryan DeCorte, a junior at Ferris State University in the Welding Engineering Technology Program, is the 2010 RWMA Scholarship Award Winner.

This scholarship was established in 2005 by the Resistance Welder Manufacturers’ Association (RWMA) to perpetuate its legacy of support for welding education.

The RWMA was a trade association founded in 1936 to promote the technical and economic advantages of the resistance welding process. For 70 years, the members of the RWMA volunteered their time and pooled their resources to ensure that every opportunity was afforded to those individuals who had an interest in the resistance welding process.

This scholarship was established when RWMA joined AWS in 2005, to commemorate the efforts of all those who had worked throughout the years to provide opportunities for learning. The Resistance Welder Manufacturers’ Association Scholarship continues, under the direction of the AWS Foundation, to support students of the resistance welding process. The hope is that the scholarship recipients will learn to appreciate the simple elegance and robustness of the process, so that they can carry the message forward to the next generation.
