Spring 2010 Elvin Hatfield Completes 35 Years of Service orking the same job for 35 years can seem to be a challenge for most people but Criminal Justice Instructor, Elvin Hatfield has managed to do just that. Hatfield worked in the law enforcement field before beginning his teaching career at Cowley College. “[My] Career in law enforcement was at a local level,” said Hatfield. “The majority of the work was spent in investigations.” The reason that Hatfield chose the criminal justice field was because of his uncle who was the Chief of Police in Woodward, OK. However, that was not the only reason. “Out of high school they tested us for occupational careers and my results were either a teacher or law enforcement,” said Hatfield. “I couldn’t believe it.” Based on the results from the test Hatfield chose the law enforcement career first. The other part Hatfield liked about the criminal justice career was “it wasn’t indoors assembly line work. It was something that a person could initiate on their own and be able to follow up and be self directive once a case was assigned.” While Hatfield was working in the law enforcement arena, he was a guest speaker for the criminal justice classes at Cowley College. When the instructor moved to Washington, DC, Hatfield accepted a teaching position. Hatfield has enjoyed his teaching career because of being able to develop courses and know that students leave Cowley College with more than just textbook learning. The best memory of his career is “when I had a class of excellent students and they [were] all top notched students. They all got careers in law enforcement within one year of graduating.” Hatfield has put time into making sure the criminal justice program at Cowley College is working to the benefit of the legal system. “I like being able to educate the student’s mind and provide them with the ability to work in all areas of criminal justice.” Richard Gould, Cowley Press Staff and Phi Beta Lambda member, contributed to this article W

Elvin Hatfield Completes 35 Years of Service

orking the same job for 35 years can seem to be a challenge for most people but

Criminal Justice Instructor, Elvin Hatfield has managed to do just that.

Hatfield worked in the law enforcement field before beginning his teaching career at Cowley College. “[My] Career in law enforcement was at a local level,” said Hatfield. “The majority of the work was spent in investigations.” The reason that Hatfield

chose the criminal justice field was because of his uncle who was the Chief of Police in Woodward, OK. However, that was not the only reason.

“Out of high school they tested us

for occupational careers and my

results were either a teacher or

law enforcement,” said Hatfield.

Lovegevity, Inc. offered the first Wedding Planner Certification class this spring. Six students were enrolled in the 10-week course that was held at the Mulvane Center. Ronnie Johnston, O.M., Bridal Consultant owner of Perfect Touch Custom Weddings, in Wichita, KS was the instructor. Students gained experience and practice with application and utilization of business tools, formulas and presentation methods in the day-to-day activities of wedding planning. Course objectives included: Gaining a basic knowledge of the wedding industry; creating business contracts, pricing, packages and presentation tools; understanding the event planning process necessary to design and deliver a successful wedding/social event; and understanding the six stages of event experiences and ways to implement them. Students found the information presented in a fast paced, enjoyable classroom atmosphere. Group participation and interaction were a part of the course. Having the opportunity to work with a professional wedding planner and listening to professional guest speakers provided additional expertise to the course. The Wedding Planning Institute, a division of Lovegevity, Inc. located in Roseville, CA will provide the certificates of completion at the end of the course. Students will receive 2 credit hours of course work through Cowley College.

“We are excited to be offering this course and certification as a Wedding Planner. More and more brides and grooms are seeking the assistance of a wedding planner to handle the wedding details. They want it done right. Having the chance to become certified at Cowley College in a 10-week time frame is a great opportunity,” says Beverly Grunder, department chair for Business, Computer and Information Technology. The next course will be offered in the fall semester on Tuesday evenings, beginning September 28 and ending on November 30. Time will be 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Mulvane Center. If you would like additional information about the 2 credit hour course, please contact Grunder at 620.441.5267 or [email protected].

Cosmetology Department — Designer Level

n the Cosmetology Industry many salon owners establish goals for their employees. When employees

reach the goals, the employer then puts them in a higher price level. At Cowley, the cosmetology students start out at Technician Level, then when students reach an established service and retail amount/goal, new client request and return client request percentage along with GPA requirement and attendance percentage, the students get to move up to Designer Level. By reaching the Designer Level their prices are higher and they are given a purple lab uniform to wear to denote their achievements. “In the salon they would receive a higher wage because of the increase in their prices, however we pay in Cowley bucks,” Mauzey said. “We do this process so that students will know what to expect when they go to work in the salon.” At the end of the year Peels Beauty Supply sponsors an auction and the students use their Cowley bucks to buy skin, hair and nail products, implements, and salon apparel. Those who move up in this system usually have the most Cowley bucks to spend. Both Jennifer Jennings and Amy Herrman have generated more than $1,000 in service sales and over $300 in retail sales. They also have an 86 percent or higher grade point average and have had more than 24 new clients this year, while missing less than five percent of their class time. Jennings, who is from Arkansas City, used her 17 month old daughter as inspiration for her to come back to school and continue her education. Her first desire to do hair came at the age of nine and she has loved it ever since. She chose Cowley Cosmetology because she knew she would get a quality education. "I have enjoyed my time in class working with Mrs. Mauzey and my classmates and after completing this course, I will be working in the Arkansas City area."

Herrman came to Cowley from Derby High School and has always loved styling and cutting her friends' hair and always wanted to be a cosmetologist. She came to Cowley with intentions of pursuing cosmetology on an awarded art scholarship, but due to lack of spare time, she declined the scholarship and continued with cosmetology classes. “I feel like I can express my artistic side through cosmetology,” Herrman said. Mauzey is proud of each of the students’ accomplishments. “They are very busy, team oriented students,” Mauzey said. “I have enjoyed having them here and working with them.”

Having reached the goals set by cosmetology instructor Pat Mauzey, Cowley College cosmetology students Amy Herrman (left) and Jennifer Jennings were moved up to Designer Level.

Visual Communications There will be a new class offered this fall for the Graphic Design program. The focus of the course is to define problems, gather information, and put together clear, powerful, and persuasive visual statements. A basic foundation of research, idea generation, image-making will be central to the learning process. Visual Communications will combine studio work with classroom instruction. Students will learn the fundamentals and principles of design theory, typography, and incorporate those with problem definition. This type of

Students will further their understanding of visual communication by translating verbal concepts with design theory into visual images. Lectures and visual media will work together to provide a broad introduction to the field of graphic design.
