LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Just sitting at my desk and taking a moment to look out and experience the autumn light, thinking about winter com- ing – and how NCE is weathering these challenging times. We are all experiencing the volatility of economic forces, here and around the world, the ongoing drama of America’s political system, the on-going military conflicts overseas, and the many recent natural disasters. Not to mention the great September melt down by the Red Sox. In a world full of uncertainty and turmoil, what role can community education play? It is a place where we can come together to learn, play and be together in community. Excitement and enjoyment in our programs can reduce stress, put one's mind at ease, open the heart or just be fun. Our pro- grams can bring new experiences and people into our lives. Our programs are a positive force to counteract the weight of these challenging times. So thank you to all who came out to learn and play with us this fall. Your participation is what makes NCE possible. Looking forward NCE has some very exciting new pro- grams. OFFICE HOURS: Our main office is at NewtonNorth HS, Room 101, 457 Walnut St., Newtonville; itis open from 8:30am to 5pm with coverage until 8pmon evenings when classes are in session. Our satelliteoffice at Newton South, 140 Brandeis Rd, NewtonCenter, is open 5-8pm when classes are in session.

COURSE CONFIRMATIONS: If you registeronline and enter an email address, you will receive anemail receipt. If you do not get a receipt, please call us.We’ll contact you if there are any changes to yourclasses.

COURSE ADMISSION: Adult courses are open to students 16 years of age and older. Residents ofother communities are welcome. There is a non-refundable $6 registration fee per student each semes-ter.

ACCESSIBILITY: The City of Newton does not discriminate on the basis of disability in admission to,access to, or operations of its programs, services, oractivities. If you need assistance or special services,please notify the NCE office when you register (call617-559-6999).

ENROLLMENT: Classes are filled on a first-come,first-served basis. You are officially enrolled once wereceive your completed registration form and payment,as long as there is still space available. Please registerearly so you won’t miss out!

DISCOUNTS: If you’re a “senior” (age 65+) or anemployee of the city of Newton, you’re eligible for a15% discount off the tuition of many of our classes, butonly if you let us know at the time of registration. Thediscount does not apply to ESL, trade, one-session, off-campus, and other select courses, and cannot be com-bined with any other discounts, such as already-reduced “couples” rates. Discounts do not apply tomaterials or food fees, including those that are builtinto our tuitions.

CERTIFICATES are available from your instructor uponsuccessful completion of a course. Please request inadvance.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Partial tuition-remission scholar-ship is available on a limited basis for Newton residents.Please call 617-559-6999 for more information.

GIFT CERTIFICATES: You may purchase a certifi-cate for any amount to be used for any course we offer.

WITHDRAWALS/REFUNDS: Full refunds aregiven if a class is cancelled due to low enrollment. Youmust withdraw at least one week before your course’sstarting date to receive either a refund minus a $10 pro-cessing fee or a course voucher minus a $5 processingfee. The $6 registration fee is non-refundable unless wecancel a class. Note: Refunds for checks and cash take 4-6weeks; for credit cards, allow one week. (For Kids & Teens sum-mer programs, you must withdraw by June 1 to receivea refund minus a $25 processing fee. There will be norefunds for withdrawals after June 1.) We regret thatno other refunds or vouchers will be given.

SMOKING: No smoking is permitted.

CREDITS: Students seeking high school credits mustget written authorization from a school authority andpresent it to our office prior to the start of the course(s).

WEATHER CANCELLATIONS: If Newton publicschools are cancelled due to inclement weather, ourclasses are cancelled at all locations.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGNRobert Emin, InstructorIf you say, “I can’t do art” or “I don’t have a creative bone inmy body,” it actually might be that you just need to learndesign. Understanding the basic principles of design canawaken your artistic abilities, whatever medium you want touse. We’ll discuss the seven key elements that comprisedesign: line, shape, space, color, texture, value, and direc-tion. Knowing how to manipulate these elements will leadyou to create successful compositions. Handouts will beprovided.

INTRO TO PHOTOGRAPHYLaura Faye Martin, InstructorNew to digital photography? Have an eye for what youwant to shoot, but get stuck reading the manual? This classwill get you clicking away, using the functions that are “hid-den” inside your camera. You’ll get tips for getting your pho-tos off the camera and into your computer, and learn how tomanage that ever-growing collection of images. Our week-ly slide show will build your confidence as we focus oncomposition and camera settings to help you improve yourshooting skills. COMPUTER PROGRAMMING IN JAVA & C#WITH GRAPHICS APPLICATIONSRobin Verdier, InstructorWe all use computers to run commercial programs like webbrowsers and word processors that take directions from usand — usually — do what we asked them. Section 259teaches you to write your own programs using C#, a com-puter language that is included in Windows, and is availablefree for Macintosh OS-X and Linux. Section 203 is all aboutJava, which is among the best, and perhaps the most-used,of contemporary computer languages, is preinstalled onMacs, and is available free from Sun Microsystems forWindows. ICE FISHING FOR BEGINNERSPaul Bruce, InstructorIt may be cold outside, but the fish are still hungry! Masterthe art of ice-fishing in one easy lesson. Our teacher willprovide everything you need: traps, tackle, live bait, andinstructions that are so easy to follow that you’ll be out-fish-ing everyone on the lake your first time out. In 2003, one ofhis students landed a 5 lb 6oz large-mouth bass. In 2004,they snagged a 28” chain pickerel weighing 4 lbs. Let’s seeif you can do better!
