ShinglesChances are that

you or someone you know has been afflicted with herpes zoster, commonly known as shingles. Shingles is painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus. Shingles usually appear in a band, a strip, or a small area on one side of the face or body. It is most commonly seen in older adults and people who have weakened immune systems because of stress, injury, disease, or certain medications. The disease usually occurs in people who have already had chickenpox. In some people the virus remains dormant while in others with weakened immune systems the virus “wakes up” and causes the shingles rash. Once the virus becomes active again, it can only cause shingles, not chickenpox. Typically shingles is not contagious but there is a small chance that a person can spread the virus to another person who has not had chickenpox and who hasn’t gotten the chickenpox vaccine. Most people who get shingles do not get the disease again.

The symptoms happen in stages. At first you may have a headache or feel as though you have the flu but not have a fever. Later you may feel itching, tingling, or pain in a certain area. The rash turns into clusters of blisters, which may last take two to four weeks to heal and may leave scars. Untreated the disease may increase your risk of Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN), pain that may last for months or even years after the shingles heal.

Shingles is treated with medications. Starting antiviral medicine right away can help shorten the time you have symptoms and reduce the risks of further complications. Over-the-counter pain medications such as acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen help reduce the pain. For intense pain due to PHN, consult your physician for other prescription pain medication alternatives.

There is a shingles vaccine available (Zostavax) that reduces your chances of getting shingles by about 50%. The vaccine also helps to prevent the spread of the virus. As always, feel free to contact your local health professionals at Bloomfield Drugstore to help you manage all your healthcare and medication needs.

rejuvenation, and just part of a major upgrade to services hospital-wide”, said Rupert.

Patient rooms throughout the hospital were transformed to all-private beds. Medical, surgical, and intensive care units were renovated and reopened. The hospital’s labor and delivery center, one of two in the city, is in its final stages of renovation and expansion, with final completion slated for late spring.

The hospital is also preparing for the restoration of its cardiovascular services. Projected to open May 1st 2013, the program will include both diagnostic and interventional cardiology and cardiothoracic and vascular surgery services. “We are eagerly looking forward to the opening of the Cardiovascular Institute this spring. Given the prevalence of heart disease in our community, the percentage of patients needing emergency care related to cardiovascular issues, such as suspected heart attack or stroke, is extremely high”, said Bruce MacLeod, MD, Medical Director of West Penn Hospital’s Emergency Department. Under Dr. MacLeod’s leadership ut i l izat ion of the department exceeded all projections in its first year of operation, while also remaining in the 90th percentile nationally for hospital of like size in terms of patient care quality and satisfaction.

West Penn’s year included multiple other achievements as well, including the region’s first Magnet Recognition re-designation from the American Nursing Credentialing Center, indicating its nursing program continues to rank as one of the best in the nation; accreditation from the Joint Commission; and a successful biennial licensure survey by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The hospital’s cell transplantation program, neurodiagnostic lab, and OB/GYN residency program were also accredited this year indicating the highest level of performance by their respective accrediting agencies.

Leaders look forward to continued progress in 2013 with the addition of more physicians and services.

backdrop for this important outreach program that empowers amputees with added confidence in themselves. The beauty of this project begins with the radiance and energy of Holly herself. She has engaged the medical expertise of her husband, Dr. Anthony J. Kirby, Director of Jefferson Health System Pain Management Center, to better understand the difficulty of the task. Dr. Kirby certifies amputee prosthetic devices and deals with the challenge of that patient population. Holly has gone a step further inviting other health professionals to volunteer and participate in her Saturday classes that are free of charge to the amputees. Embrace dance student Bill Werkeiser describes the experience like this, “it is doing something I used to do and gets me into a healthy environment, not making excuses to be inactive”. Bill has been a bilateral amputee since January 2011. Holly describes the thought process and design of the classes as, “just trying to go backwards wearing a prosthesis, which is something we just take for granted, presents the amputee with a whole set of issues when dancing”. Undaunted and determined to make “things happen” for her new group of students, she is establishing a methodology combining the arts with scientific knowledge. Holly’s passion for dancing has been fueled over the years with learning experience from the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, the Dance Alloy, Musical Review Groups, and special training in Ballroom Dancing that has made her a respected expert in her field.

In the most recent Batman movie filmed in Pittsburgh, Holly won the role as a tango dancer over 352 dancers who auditioned for this dance part. She nurtures a flourishing Dance Studio and three beautiful children as well, Ian (11), Eden (10), and Liam (8). The Embrace Dance Project is growing and is a non-profit entity that readers can inquire about or donate to easily by writing Holly at [email protected]. The Embrace Dance Project demonstrates that the world really is a great place with individuals like Holly Dayton Kirby in it!

Bishop Zubik and Theresa Zunic

Station is the 22nd mile station #1 in front of Silky’s Pub, Liberty Avenue, manned by Event Coordinator Janet Scullion, Co-captains Patty Ladasky and Joe Covelli, Bloomfield volunteers, and members of the Central Catholic High School Track Team. DJ music and Bob Scullion and the Mystics, live rock and roll band will provide another dose of energy and support at the 22nd mile in this race. Bob will be across from Angelo’s Pizza. It is a big party spot for enthusiasts. Live music is also located further down Liberty Avenue.

The last re-awakening for the runners is the official Bloomfield volunteer Water Station #2, manned by Co-captains Barb Zielmanski and Phyllis McQuillan at Woolslair School and 40th Street that will be jumping with professional disk jockey music.

Bloomfield will also be the most heartwarming section of the 2013 Pittsburgh Marathon as the Bloomfield Citizens Council dedicates the 22nd mile to their own Officer Paul J. Sciullo, II and his fellow fallen heroes, Eric Kelly and Stephen Mayhle. Banners with their photos will be strung across Liberty Avenue as Paulie’s friends and relatives encourage runners whose commitment, strength, and love of life mirrors the qualities seen in Paul, Eric, and Stephen.

The success of the entire 2013 Pittsburgh Marathon is due to the extraordinary talents of Race Director Patrice Matamoros, Technical Director Gary Brown, Marketing/Development Coordinator Luke Mohammed, Director of Logistics and Operations Dee Stathis and Director of Development Adrianne Deithorn.
