Not every Sunday during this stage is observed as Ordinary Time. To start with, the first two Sundays after Pentecost are always observed as the feasts of the Holy Trinity and of the Body and Blood of the Lord (Corpus Christi). Every year the readings for the two celebrations replace those for the Sundays of Ordinary Time. This means that over the years we hear the readings for the Sixth to the Twelfth Sundays of Ordinary Time much less often than the rest. The mystery of the Trinity can be approached as a theological conundrum or as an adventure in faith. The word of God invites us to take the latter route. The readings for the day help us retrace some of the steps taken by our forebears in faith as they were led to discover Father, Son and Spirit communing in the one God head and enfolding the whole of creation in their love. THURSDAY MAY 31ST

This feast celebrates the Virgin Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth as told in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 1:39-56), and her example of faith in God’s word and sensitivity to the Spirit. ‘ … The Mass of the day salutes her who in her womb bore the King of heaven and earth, the Creator of the world, the Son of the Eternal Father, the Sun of Justice. It narrates the cleansing of John from original sin in his mother's womb. Hearing herself addressed by the most-lofty title of "Mother of the Lord" and realising what grace her visit had conferred on John, Mary broke out in that sublime canticle of praise proclaiming prophetically that henceforth she would be venerated down through the centuries: "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me, and holy is His name" (Lk. 1:46). …’ [excerpt from www.catholiculture.com]

PLENARY COUNCIL 2020 – LISTEN TO WHAT THE SPIRIT IS SAYING.

Pope Francis has approved the Australian Bishops’ decision to hold a Plenary Council in Australia in 2020 and 2021. It is a significant moment for the Church in Australia to make decisions about the future.

Archbishop Costelloe has been appointed as President of the Plenary Council by Pope Francis and as Chairman of the Bishops’ Commission on the Plenary.

In the coming months, as a parish community, we will gather together to listen to one another, to reflect on this question and share our own stories of faith, and our experiences of the Church. After we talk together, we will collate our stories and ideas and the questions we have about the future of the Church in Australia and give our submissions online through the Plenary Council webpage. This can be done as individuals, in groups or as a parish.

To prepare the agenda for the Plenary Council, all of God’s people are invited to reflect on the question: “What do you think God is asking of us in Australia at this time?” Find out more about the Plenary Council 2020 at the new website, now online: www.plenarycouncil.catholic.org.au

PARISH FINANCES: CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS.

After two years’ service on the Parish Finance Committee and five years’ service as the Parish representative for Caritas and Lifelink, John Mordini has expressed his intention to resign from his duties in the Parish in these areas. John is happy to complete this financial year (to June 2018), and to assist any person(s) willing to take on this position as from 1st July. The tasks involved with Caritas and Lifelink could be done by two people and John is also happy to train any new person(s) in this area. The Parish Pastoral Council extends its gratitude to John for his dedication and service to the Parish finances and Parish Council. Please contact Fr Peter if you could assist the Parish in this vital role.

LEARNING FROM THE VICTORIAN EXPERIENCE OF END OF LIFE

LEGISLATION Monday 28 May 2018

6pm - 7.30pm Notre Dame University

Santa Maria Lecture Theatre Mouat Street, Fremantle

Presenter: Dr Dan Fleming Approved by His Grace.

Everybody wants end of life choices and nobody wants to die in pain. Recently Victoria passed Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation following months of divisive debate about what should – and shouldn’t – be part of end of life care. Dr Dan Fleming will invite us to consider the importance of clear and careful ethical thinking when it comes to end of life care, walk us through Victoria’s new legislation and its implications for Catholic health services, and ultimately invite us to consider what beautiful and excellent care might look like for those who are near to the end of their lives.

COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT SET TO GROW

Our parish has launched a campaign to raise funds for a new landscaping project alongside the church and recently-opened meeting and residential complex. Capital works leader Paul Roberts has a target of $100,000 to fulfil the vision for the Rosary Community Garden drawn up by parishioner and botanical advisor Lydia Ellis. Lydia has produced three artist’s impressions of the garden which will be dedicated to Mary and the rosary. Plantings will reflect the colours of each of the four decades of the rosary and the ground treatment will incorporate the pattern of a giant cross. A combination of soft and durable surfaces will be featured. Our Lady’s statue, formerly located in a bush grotto alongside the church, has been restored and will be permanently placed in an elevated position in the new community garden. Paul Roberts has begun discussions with Holy Rosary School and Newman College to seek support for the project. Parishioners will kept informed of the progress of the garden and have the opportunity to be involved, including contributing to particular features such as seating, trees, other plants, inscriptions and paving. Paul says the Rosary Community Garden will eventually cater for many uses including spaces for small gatherings, quiet contemplation, prayers, post-sacramental photography and barbecues. A new memorial wall will be installed on one side. See Lydia’s vision in full on the parish website.

A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW

The eleven disciples set out for Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had arranged to meet them. When they saw him they fell down before him, though some hesitated. Jesus came up and spoke to them. He said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I give you. And know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.’

REFLECTION ON THE GOSPEL As is the case with many of the stories of Jesus’ appearances after his resurrection, there is a tantalising degree of obscurity and ambiguity. Why did Jesus direct them to Galilee? On what mountain are they meeting and what significance might this have? Why were some overcome with awe while others hesitated? Nonetheless, Jesus’ commission to the Eleven is crystal clear. They are sent on a universal mission, with a mandate to each and to baptise. The whole gospel concludes as it began: with the absolute assurance of the enduring presence of Emmanuel, God with us.
