As we go to presswith this issue,

the Paralympics being held inLondon are drawing to a close.Whilst athletics in general maynot be everybody’s “cup of tea”as a spectator sport, one cannotdeny the sheer scale of thecompetitors’ personalachievements. What betterplace from which to drawinspiration for our own lives?

The Sky’s the LimitOne of my very favourite quotes during my time here in Lossiemouth relates to the weather and its ever changing nature … “just wait a minute and it’ll change”.

Autumn skies here on the Moray Firth are particularly beautiful in my experience. Sky and cloud photogra-phy is one of my most pleasurable pastimes firstly because there are never two sunsets the same and it does change, very quickly and gives you a fresh canvass to capture.

Photographing skies during daylight is relatively simple because you have the light available to you. Remember the definition of photography is drawing with light. Photographing at dusk is very different. You don’t have as much light available to you. You can be anywhere to see and capture the perfect sunset. Now is the time of year to keep your eyes peeled. One tip I’ve learnt for capturing sunset and sky shots is always look behind you. You can look ahead trying to find your shot but don’t forget what’s going on elsewhere.

From my own personal experience try not to take your dusk sunset shot when it’s too windy. It will cause reverberation through the camera causing movement and thus blur. All modern digitals have a function where you can adjust the effects of wind but it’s not always brilliant.

I love the natural warmth and depth of a good Moray sunset. There are many layers of cloud, air and light which all contribute to your composition. You may live on the coast where you’ll have the sea and mountains

Life Through a Lensby Nicky Mack, Lossiemouth

as a point of reference or if you live closer into town, you can use silhouettes of buildings to give your shot a point of focus. If you don’t feel you are experienced enough with your camera yet to set it up for this specific type of shot, most digitals will have a Sunset setting or the like. This will automatically set light levels, depth of field etc. What is important to remember for dusk time/sunset photography is capturing the level of light available to you. One blink and the shot is lost. Therefore, you need to set your shutter speed higher. This will in turn capture the movement of the sky inhabitants against the light available to you by sucking in the light to the shot. There is a term in photography called ‘noise’. This is prevalent in dark or low light photography. This is when your shot has fuzziness which may distort your shot. This can be overcome by adjusting settings. Get comfortable with your camera. Know both of your capabilities so far and snap, snap and snap some more. You will find your own way. Before long you’ll be shifting and twiddling and clicking without thinking about it.

You can achieve some wonderful photographs through watching the sky. No painting can compare to the wonderful dramatic presence the clouds can offer in real time but a well shot photograph can come close. The camera is not as clever as the human eye. We are very fortunate to have this gift. But get intimate with your camera and keep at it and you’ll surprise yourself how close to a perfect capture you’ll come.

My own work can be found at www.vianne.co.uk, any comments would be greatly appreciated. My inspiration is merely what surrounds me, you can share that too.

“The Autumn mourns herrip'ning corn

By early Winter's ravage torn;

Across her placid, azure sky,

She sees the scowling tempest fly;…”

Burns, R.

The Bible is rich with wonderful stories. One of the most popular stories from theOld Testament is that of young Davidtaking on and beating the giant PhilistineGoliath. It is a tale that has been used toencourage the underdog. It is a tale thatencourages us to take on challengesthat might seem beyond us – becausewell, if wee David can do it so can we!

But you see this is where we have thestory all wrong – because, I wouldargue, David was never the underdog.Apologies if that made you choke onyour toast but, you see, how could Davidbe the underdog when he had God onhis side?

Let’s go back to the beginning of thestory. David has been helping out by tak-ing supplies to the battle frontline. Hisbrothers are there. King Saul is lookingfor someone to take on Goliath, who hasmade a direct challenge. Step forwardDavid. Saul dresses David up in his ar-mour and gives him his sword. But they

weigh David down so much he canhardly move. So David takes off his garband heads off, having first picked up hisshepherd’s crook and sling and selected5 smooth stones as ammunition. He isall set to take on the giant, Goliath.Taunted by Goliath David retorts, “Youare coming against me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come againstyou in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the Israelite armies” (1Samuel 17:45). And with that, he fires astone from his sling and Goliath isbeaten.

Davis wins because he has God on hisside. When David went to meet Goliathhe was armed with five stones. Over thesummer we have in our church beenthinking about these stones. We havebeen considering as we have followedDavid’s story how they represent God in-volvement in our lives. One way wehave done this is to consider what theymight represent. A wonderful suggestionI came across was that the first stone

represents God’s love for us, the secondthat he knows us, the third that he treas-ures us, the fourth that he forgives usand the fifth that he is always with us.

Is that not a wonderful way to look at thisstory in a new way – David is no under-dog– how, armed with these stones, could David fail to beat Goliath? And ifwe pick up these 5 stones how can wefail to meet life’s challenges? We mightnot always win or get what we want butwe will be strengthened by rememberingthat God is there with us. So rememberand cherish your five stones: God lovesyou, God knows you, God treasuresyou, God forgives and God is alwayswith you.

May God’s blessing be with you.

A few months ago I was sitting at my desk in the room at the front of the house I use as an office, when my concentration was broken by a barely audible little song. I looked around the room, there was a Robin sitting on the back of a chair a metre away. The song was repeated and I was looked at very directly. I opened the window but the robin refused to move, let alone fly out. As I went out of my office across the hall into the sitting room, the Robin followed, cocked its head on one side and repeated the song, this time sitting on the television. I knew what the Robin wanted.

To get to my office you come in the back door, through the kitchen, along the front hall and turn left. This is a route the Robin knows well and uses when the back door is open and I need “training”. Like many people, we have bird feeders in the garden and during the late Spring and early Summer they seem to be the main source of food for the local breeding House sparrows who consume nearly a kilo of food a day. Last Winter we started to feed mealworms, the Black birds and Robins really seemed to appreciate this. A couple of Robins started to watch for signs of us coming out of the house. They would make it very clear that they wanted more meal worms, and as time went on they became quite happy to eat these from the hand.

This Spring two pairs of Robins nested in the garden and our “training” was stepped up a gear, I guess by the male birds who were feeding their mates sitting on eggs. If there were no meal worms out the Robins would look directly through the window into the house, and continue to watch us until we put out more mealworms.

Back in May we spent a couple of weeks in the Cairngorms, and while we were away our neighbour checked the garden and filled the bird feeders. On returning I noticed a small pile of bird droppings on the door step. I thought this was a little odd until I surmised that a Robin had spent a lot of time sitting on the back door handle waiting for someone to come out and feed him.

Over the past months the demand from the Robins has reduced, the young have left the hedge and I assume they are looking after themselves. However, the male birds seem to be feeding the females again, perhaps they have laid more eggs. I am looking forward to my work being interrupted again in a couple of weeks and for my “training” to be resumed.

In the meantime, the local starlings have discovered the mealworms and the Blackbirds nesting in the clematis on top of our oil tank are feeding them to their young. No chance of stopping our regular mealworm order!

Briefly, and on more serious note, wild birds eat all year round and feeding them in the Winter can really help them through difficult cold spells.

3. Matters Arising a) Strathspey RailwayBasil Dunlop via email informed the meet-ing that the event held on 25th May for in-vited politicians etc. was beneficialregarding publicity, though somewhat dis-appointing regarding attendance. The re-sultant photos in the Press, with 3 enginesin steam and 12 footplate and locomotivemaintenance volunteers and staff posingon them, showed that the SRC is now bigbusiness, as it did not include the manyother people engaged in other essentialtasks on the railway.

b) Flower BasketsBasil Dunlop via email told the meeting thatthe baskets are expected any time now,and the watering pump has been checkedand is working well. Highland Council haveplanted up tubs. Volunteers are still re-quired, especially those with vehicles withtow bars.

c) Grant Park LochanBasil Dunlop via email said that AnagachWoods Trust are to arrange a meeting withSeafield Strathspey Estates to discuss theweed problem, possible allotments, andvehicle access.

d) Old SpeybridgeOn going.

e) Grant House RenovationCllr Douglas reported that the 2nd phasewould be complete in early October and in-dicated that an invitation would be ex-tended to the Community Council to visitafter the renovations were complete.

f) Town SignsOn going.

Other issues:• PA System – On going.• Picnic in the Square – J Beveridge toldthe meeting that the event had been verysuccessful. C Sinclair extended a vote ofthanks to the committee who had organ-ized the afternoon.

There was a discussion regarding the re-quirement for multi-directional micro-phones for groups performing. LMcCracken is to approach the Grammar

School to see if they would approach theCommunity Council to purchase these, asit would be more beneficial for the schoolto have the microphones. E Sutton is toprice the equipment and Cllr Douglasstated that there could potentially be matchfunding from the Ward discretionarybudget.

• Olympic Torch – J Beveridge indicatedthat this had also been a great success; hethanked C Sinclair for his MC duties. Therewas disappointment that the HighlandCouncil coverage had ended at Carrbridge.

• Ian Charles Hospital – Cllr Douglas statedthat a focus group was being set up andthat a site visit to Migdale was to bearranged with representatives from all af-fected Community Councils. J Beveridgesaid that under the proposed new arrange-ments consultants would attend at thecommunity hospital. D Scobbie indicatedthat the Highland Senior Citizen Networkfelt that the centralized model would not beas beneficial to the various communities ashaving smaller, local units.

• Dulaig Pitch – The benches are still out-standing, Cllr Douglas to pursue this.

• Service Point Hours – On going.

Tom nan Clach wind farm - Fiona Milligan,Project Manager at Infinergy attended themeeting to outline the Community Benefitscheme attached to the Tom nan Clachwind farm. She explained that if thescheme goes ahead then the various com-munities impacted will qualify for a Com-munity Benefit Fund of £5,000 per annumper megawatt of installed capacity. This willequate to £195,000 per annum.

Highland Council have produced their ownpolicy on Community Benefit and the com-munities affected were free to adopt this orto go their own way. One suggestionwould be to set up a central trust to be ad-ministered by representatives of the variouscommunities and to which local organiza-tions could apply for funds.

F Milligan went on to outline some of thepriorities suggested so far including cul-tural heritage, skills development, social

housing (estate houses) and habitat, whichwould comprise a demonstrator type proj-ect which could then be showcased toother estates.

J Munro asked whether the funds will besplit among the communities according tothe impact upon them. F Milligan repliedthat this was hard to balance because ofdifferent ways of measuring this and alsobecause of the Community Council areaand number of residences.

J Munro also asked for clarification as towhether the social housing proposedwould not benefit the estate rather than thelocal residences. F Milligan responded thatthe affordable housing would be realizedby bringing estate housing back into use,but would be done in cooperation with alocal housing association or trust.

Cllr Lobban stressed to the meeting theneed to explore all the options before thewind farm was operational.

• Aung San Suu Kyi – There was a followup discussion about the Burmese opposi-tion leader’s visit to Britain and Grantownon Spey offering her some sort of recogni-tion. It was decided that as we had clearlymissed this window of opportunity the sub-ject should be re-examined at a later date.

Parliament Blog“ ”We may not have had the brightest weather, but this summer was lit up by the OlympicGames. After just a few short weeks, the eyes of the

world turned on Britain once more as the Par-alympics got underway. The Olympic traditionhas always been about stretching the limits of

human physical and mental capability and the Paralympics areno different. For that reason, they belong firmly at the heart ofthe international Olympic movement. The Highlands played an important part at the beginning of the2012 Paralympic story when the flame was lit by the Scouts onthe summit of Ben Nevis. Congratulations to all the athletes whotook part in the games, particularly our local champions - DavidSmith, Karen Darke and Craig Maclean. At the time of writingthis, David Smith has picked up his first gold for Team GB –hopefully one of many more to come.

As the local MSP for Inverness, and as the Minister forTourism, I was asked at a special screening of Brave atEden Court, to introduce, with a short speech, one ofthe actors, and the producer and director of the film. The actor was local man Kevin McKidd. I am told by

the female half of the population that this Elgin loon is really pretty dishy.Anyway, Fiona Natasha and I present ourselves at Eden Court, to makethe speech and then watch the film. The occasion was far more glitzy than politicians are used to. The outfitswere of the Hollywood type. Local Singer Peigi Barker and her brotherDonald were there to perform the song from the film: heart-breaking stuff. It was so beautiful, so pure in sound that I said in my remarks that thehankies were needed to be used before the film had begun.I made a short speech about the film – and the chance for Scottishtourism to an audience at Eden Court, and then introduced the real stars.I then went to take up my seat with Fiona, and our 4 year old Natasha.Unfortunately, at this point, because perhaps of the excitement of it all –my wee one was sick on my shoe! Obviously she was not feeling well, and was upset so she wanted to go home – which we did back to Boatof Garten, and so I did not get to see the film.i did say, that so far as i am aware at least, this has been the only occa-

sion in over twenty years of public speaking that anyone has actually

been physically sick after listening to what i said!Danny Alexander MP Fergus Ewing MSP

Kris McKie, The Royal Hotel, Elgin

Crab Fritters andSweet Chilli Sauce.

A simple starter that often goes on our specials board

this month as local crab is available.

100g butter

150ml water

150g plain flour (sifted)

A pinch of sea salt

1 egg and 1 yolk (beaten)

150g crab meat

1 tspn chopped chives or parsley

Method

1) Bring water to boil in a saucepan. Add butter and salt.

When butter has melted, beat in flour to form smooth paste.

Beat for 2/3 minutes over a low heat.

2) Chill pastry in a bowl for 20/30 minutes.

3) When cool, beat in egg. Mix well.

4) Fold in crab meat and chives. Season with black pepper

to taste.

5) Using a teaspoon, drop crab mix into hot oil. Cook for

2/3 minutes.

Serve fritters with dressed salad, lemon, and sweet

chilli sauce.

Enjoy!

Dreamingof...

One of the most rapidly expanding sectors of the Travel Industry is taking a cruise. It can be described as living in a luxury hotel which moves from destination to destination and there is no need to pack or unpack your suitcases more than once!

The cruise market has seen steady growth, driven by innovation and the quality of the experience. There are large capacity increases being launched all the time, so what might have seemed like a very exclusive mode of transport historically has become much more available to the seasoned holidaymakers.

There is a perception that going on a cruise is very formal and only for the older generation, but that is changing. The average age of people going on a cruise comes down each year and ships are coming into service to cater for different needs. Some prefer to do a Fly Cruise, where you join the ship in an already exotic or interesting destination. Some prefer a Fly and Stay, where they join the ship and before or after their cruise they spend some time in that country. Some prefer to depart and return to a home port, negating the need to fly at all.

Pricing might sometimes seem high but remember that covers all your meals, entertainment and soft drinks – the only extras you are likely to run up are for alcoholic drinks and flutters on the gaming tables, if that is what takes your fancy.

Imagine spending a day in an interesting European city, retiring to the ship for dinner and a good night's sleep, then waking up in the morning in another fascinating destination. Wonderful!
