OUR EXPERTS Warren Lee – concert pianist and educator A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and Yale School of Music, Warren made his televised début with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of six. Warren’s discography includes multiple acclaimed albums of solo and chamber music repertoire. The American Records Guide calls him a “first-rate artist” while the Fanfare Magazine calls him “a pianist to watch out, whether as a soloist or chamber musician.” A Steinway Artist since 2009, he was among the first to record on Steinway’s Spirio on its launch in 2016. Currently the Music Director of St. Paul’s Co-educational College, a recipient of the Cultural Leadership Citation from Yale University, Warren is currently the Hong Kong representative of the Royal Academy of Music. He also holds an MBA degree and is an award-winning and internationally published composer. In recognition of his significant contributions to the music profession, Warren received the HK Outstanding Young Persons Award in 2012 and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Yale School of Music in 2017. (http://www.warren-lee.com/) OUR EXPERTS Chris Carpio – jazz pianist Those who lament the demise of the city’s live music scene should keep an ear out for Chris, scion of Hong Kong’s first family of jazz. Along with dreadlocked sax-playing brother Bernard, Chris is reinventing the old-school big-band sound of father Tony for a new contemporary audience A fiercely talented pianist who effortlessly glides between jazz, pop, rock and funk, this Hong Konger of Caucasian-Filipino descent has performed with a slew of international artists and local stars, including Jun Kung and Coco Lee. His mission—to bring back the excitement of live performance—dovetails with his modern approach to musical education, which he says should be fun, practical and not overly theoretical. With Chris and his Carpio Brothers Quartet bringing their youthful brand of jazz to the clubs of Central, our city just might start hitting those high notes again. Chris is an alumnus of ESF’s King George V School. (HK Tatler) SPOTLIGHT ON PIANO SEPTEMBER 2017 A programme of workshops, masterclasses, performances and concerts AIAIMS
