Indirect/Services Group
The ISM Indirect/Services Group held its bi-
annual meeting and networking session at
ISM2014 in Las Vegas. Attendees shared experi-
ences, strategies, suggestions and ideas. This
function was a great opportunity for networking
and socializing with fellow members, and repre-
sents one of the best methods to not only meet
new industry contacts, but to also engage in a
sure-fire way to make the Conference a success.
It was announced at ISM2014 in Las Vegas
that the ISM Indirect/Services Group won the
2013 ISM Groups and Forum Excellence Award.
This award is presented to the Group or Forum
that consistently displays a commitment to ISM
and has surpassed all core competencies as iden-
tified by ISM. This is the ninth straight year that
the Services Group (now Indirect/Services Group)
has achieved such recognition. This award was
achieved due to the determined efforts of a dedi-
cated leadership team and the participation of
the many members of the ISM Indirect/Services
Group. Guidance and support from ISM is also
important in the Group’s achievement of these
awards and assists with maintaining consistent
success.

Another highlight of ISM2014 was the sponsorship of vari-
ous educational presentations. Seven select presentations
comprised the “Indirect Track.” By participating in this track,
attendees were better able to find sessions that highlighted
their individual interests.
Planning is nearing completion for the Group’s next major
event ― the ISM Indirect Procurement Conference. Yes, that’s
correct — the name is changing again in order to expand the
focus and bring services and indirect spend together in one
conference. This year’s event will be held on December 3-4,
2014, at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Phoenix. This will
be the 15th annual version of this popular event. Presenters
represent many of the leaders and educators in the supply
chain field. Some of the topics for this year will include:
Indirect Spend: A Case Study
Travel Spend and Industry Trends
Future Expectations and Planning
Leveraging Technology Spend
Procuring in the HR World
The highly rated roundtables will return to facilitate net-
working on a variety of topics and industries
Additional networking opportunities
Mark your calendar and make plans to attend one of
ISM’s highest-rated events so you are able to experience the
educational offerings as well as the many networking opportu-
nities relating to indirect/services procurement.
The ISM Indirect/Services Group was formed in 2000 so
that professionals possessing a common interest in the pro-
curement of services-related indirect spend would have an
environment to facilitate sharing ideas and best practices. To
accomplish this, the ISM Indirect/Services Group sponsors
meetings and events throughout the year. In addition to the
annual conference, several web seminars are held throughout
the year to provide learning opportunities for all interested
individuals.

Services Group, visit www.ismindirectservicesgroup.com.

Materials Management Group Free MMG Membership
We are growing! We encourage ISM members to enroll in
the Materials Management Group (MMG ) through the ISM
website at www.ism.ws. (From the ISM Home Page, go to Mem-
bership, Member Benefits, Professional Groups and Forums,
and To Group/Forum Enrollment Form.) It’s free to join! We
want to hear from you if you would like to help represent the
MMG in your local affiliate.
The Materials Management Group more than doubled its
membership in 2013. Can we double it again? I’d like to see if
we can get there, how about you?
ISM2014 International Supply Management Conference
At ISM2014 in Las Vegas this year, the MMG, in coopera-
tion with the ISM Supply Chain Risk Management Group
(SCRMG), put on a workshop dealing with an upcoming subject.
The concept of designing your supply management system to
build resilience into your system is relatively new. Dr. Steve
Melnyk from Michigan State University reported on his ongoing
research. A panel consisting of Rose Kelly-Falls (past chair of the
ISM SCRMG) and I took questions about where this research is
leading. We are planning a series of workshops on tools and
techniques you can use to make sure that when something
does happen, your company is in the best place to ride it out
with the least disruption.
Additionally, we held our annual general meeting and
board meeting while in Las Vegas.
Also at ISM2014 in Las Vegas, the MMG hosted a hospitali-
ty room where a number of members and prospective mem-
bers networked. I hosted the event and am pleased with the re-
sponse.
Website/Social Media
Check out the MMG website at www.ismmmg.org. Also, please
join our LinkedIn page. Here’s how: Click on www.linkedIn.com,
then search for Materials Management Group. Please send us
your materials-related questions or issues for commentary. We
have a panel of materials management experts available to pro-
cess and respond to your inquiries. Also, you may email questions
to us.
Newsletter
The MMG publishes a news-
letter for its membership twice a
year. All MMG members receive
a free copy loaded with inter-
esting, relevant and timely arti-
cles. Please contact me at
[email protected] if you would
like to share an article with the
membership.
Future Seminar Workshops
The MMG has co-sponsored many successful workshops with
local affiliates and other ISM Groups. Thanks to all who have vol-
unteered to help over the past several years. We are looking for a
few affiliates to work with this year. Contact your affiliate presi-
dent and professional development chair and see if they are will-
ing to co-sponsor with the MMG, and we will provide the pre-
senter. We want to work with you and your affiliate to provide a
world-class seminar.
The MMG and PMAC is planning a co-sponsored workshop in
Cleveland this fall. Hope to see you there!
Presenters
The MMG has many great presenters, speakers and facilita-
tors within our volunteer board of directors and Group, and have
been successful in providing seminars, workshops and confer-
ences. If your affiliate is interested in co-sponsoring with the
MMG, please contact Karl Harward for available dates and speak-
ers at [email protected].
Professional Development
Attend one of our seminars and earn certification/
recertification hours. The MMG promotes professional develop-
ment, best practices, networking opportunities and co-sponsors
with ISM affiliates, and other ISM Groups and Forums.

Summary The Materials Management Group is a major contributor
to professional excellence. The MMG promotes professional
development, best practices and networking opportunities in
our broad profession. Materials management encompasses all
aspects of purchasing, production planning, inventory man-
agement, warehousing, traffic, transportation and other relat-
ed activities. The MMG board is continuing to revitalize the
MMG and invites you to participate with us. We are in the

Northeast Supply Management Group The Northeast Supply Management Group (NSMG) is in the
process of organizing the 11th annual New England Supply Chain
Conference (NESCON) to be held in Marlborough, Massachusetts
at the Best Western hotel, October 6, 2014. This event is the col-
laborated effort of the Northeast Supply Management Group
(NSMG) along with two APICS chapters (North and Boston) and
the New England Round Table (Council of Supply Chain Manage-
ment Professionals). It has become the premier supply chain con-
2013 Group/Forum of the Year Award – New York/New Jersey
5
ference in New England. In 2013, it drew more than 400
attendees. This year’s goal is 450 attendees. The conference
will also put on a well-attended networking event on Sunday,
October 5, 2014. That evening event allows attendees to net-
work and meet with many of the exhibitors and speakers.
NSMG, along with representatives of all the New England
affiliates, will hold its fall meeting on October 5, 2014 at the
Best Western in Marlborough, Massachusetts. If we can get
the funding, we will try to invite representatives from New
York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania to join us. The purpose is to
establish a dialogue with these other ISM Groups and Forums
to address common issues such as finance, membership and
educational programs to promote the supply management
profession. We believe this collaboration will help ISM and its
affiliates grow both in membership and professional recogni-
tion.

Pharmaceutical Forum Members of the Pharmaceutical Forum represent mid-to-
large pharmaceutical/biotech companies and meet at various
times throughout the year to benchmark and share best prac-
tices. Our mission is to:
Establish/maintain robust industrywide engagement
among leading procurement professionals representing
branded pharmaceutical and biotech companies of all
sizes.
Benchmark and share best practices for procurement
challenges that are unique to our industry.
Develop and maintain relationships with leading univer-
sities, institutions and commercial thought-leaders in
supply management to garner innovative thinking, col-
laborate on research areas relevant to our industry, and
further develop future practitioners.
Membership is limited in order to ensure an effective and
deeper flow of dialog between procurement leaders than other
venues allow.
For the past 12 years, the Pharmaceutical Forum has been
steered by the steady hand and expertise of Bill Stirling of Bristol
-Myers Squibb. After a long and distinguished career, Stirling will
be retiring this summer and thus stepping down from the Fo-
rum. During his tenure, the Pharmaceutical Forum has grown in
stature and reach, some highlights of the past decade include:
Created many professional education workshops/events,
each attended by hundreds of procurement profession-
als, to share latest and best practices within the profes-
sion.
Teamed with universities and research organizations
such as North Carolina State University and CAPS Re-
search to perform benchmarking and other best-practice
gathering.
Sponsored more than a dozen diverse supplier executive
education grants to expand their capacity and reach.
Funded endowments at Rutgers University, Arizona State
University and Bowling Green State University that are
currently spinning off several scholarships annually to
students majoring in supply management at the respec-
tive universities.
Stirling’s contributions and guidance will surely be missed.
The Pharmaceutical Forum extends both a thank-you for all of
his efforts over the years as well wishes in his future endeavors.
Looking ahead, the Pharmaceutical Forum expects to meet
in fall 2014, hosted by Astra Zeneca. Each meeting agenda is
developed by the members, and the structure is flexible to allow
for interactive discussion on prevalent topics affecting members.
Industry procurement leaders interested in joining the Pharma-
ceutical Forum community, may contact Kent Morsch at

Supplier Diversity Subcommittee Activity
The Institute for Supply Management® Supplier Diversity
Pharmaceutical Forum (ISM SDPF) is a subcommittee of the ISM
Pharmaceutical Forum and is composed of 20 dedicated supplier
diversity professionals from the pharmaceutical industry.
The subcommittee focuses on three key areas: (1) increas-
ing innovation, productivity and business results, (2) building
capacity for small and diverse businesses, and (3) professional
development of our members. Through annual meetings, the
group discusses legislative requirements/changes affecting sup-
plier diversity, best practices/strategies in supplier diversity
within pharmaceuticals, as well as cross-industry, collectively
develops next practices, global supplier diversity landscape and
benchmark supplier diversity business results. Their meeting in
July 2014 was hosted by Pfizer.
This year, the subcommittee will participating in several
diverse supplier events including: National Gay and Lesbian
Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) National Conference, United
States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) National Con-
ference, USBLN National Conference, National Minority Supplier
Development Council (NMSDC) National Conference, and Na-
tional Veterans Small Business Conference. Their active partici-
pation routinely involves providing speakers, running work-
shops, and sponsoring events at these conferences and thus
enables committee members to expand their reach as well as
mentor suppliers. Recently, Rondu Vincent, of Pfizer and the
current subcommittee co-chair, was recognized as the Supplier
Diversity Program Manager of the Year by the Diversity Alliance
for Science, a national organization whose mission is to support,
mentor, and develop diverse suppliers.
ISM SDPF has a limited membership of no more than 20 and
has currently reached their limit. However, if you have any ques-
tions about this subcommittee, please contact one of the co-
chairs — Rondu Vincent at [email protected] or Jinus
Moghbeli at [email protected].

sity Group (SDG) is looking for new board members. If you are
interested in joining the ISM Supplier Diversity Group board,
please contact Fred Lona at [email protected].
ISM2014 International Supply Management Conference
This year’s Conference highlights for the SDG were many.
The pre-Conference seminar, “How to Develop and Manage a
Supplier Diversity Program,” won rave reviews from the partici-
pants. This year’s seminar was the largest in the last five years.
Besides sourcing professionals, several supplier diversity pro-
fessionals attended, as well.
Equally well received was the Tuesday session, “Supplier
Diversity From the CPO Perspective.” This panel consisted of
three top CPOs discussing the importance of supplier diversity
to their supply chains. The CPOs who provided their valuable
insight were: Shelly Stewart Jr., vice president – sourcing and
logistics/CPO, DuPont; Sheila Tierney, vice president, global
procurement, Ingersoll Rand; and Eliseo T. Rojas, chief procure-
ment officer, Interpublic.
The session, “Getting in Front of Demand – Ensuring a Rig-
orous Sourcing Event That includes Diverse Suppliers” provided
valuable information regarding the inclusion of diverse suppli-
ers for all who attended.
Recognition of the Charles L. McDonald
Jr. Supplier Diversity Award winner was held
during the ISM Awards Breakfast. This
award is presented to an ISM member who
best exemplifies the SDG mission to
“educate, mutative and provide leadership
and expertise to ISM members on supplier diversity initiatives.”
This year’s winner was Tyra L. Paytes, manager, general pro-
curement, Coca-Cola Refreshments.
The annual ISM Supplier Diversity Group’s meeting and
networking reception was also a success. Elections were held
and the new board chair was elected.

Supply Chain Risk Management Group
A topic all supply chain professionals deal with no matter
what industry we work in is risk management. Whether the focus
is on supply security, price management, IP protection or any risk
perspective, CEOs depend on supply chain professionals to pre-
vent impact on their company.
The Supply Chain Risk Management Group (SCRMG) is the
premier forum for information on SCRM to help companies insti-
tutionalize SCRM for business benefit. It provides a knowledge
base for ISM members concerning supply chain risk management
processes and knowledge to support and enhance ongoing pro-
fessional supply management processes. By providing access to
information including research and best practices and access to a
network of other professionals, the group makes it easy for mem-
bers continue to grow their risk management practices. Web
seminars featuring leading industry professionals give members
access to the latest best practices and professionals to use as
resources as they pursue implementation. Conference sessions at
the ISM Annual Conferences and at risk-specific events provide
members an opportunity to dive deeper into supply chain risk
management topics.
We have a new website ― Add it to your favorites list!
The SCRM group has a new website that provides on-
demand access to research, best practices and articles, all related
to supply chain risk management. Check us out at

Utility Purchasing Management Group Forum
A Message from the 2014 Chair of UPMG
My name is Marlon L. Merritt and I am honored to serve as
the 2014 Chair of the Utility Purchasing Management Group
(UPMG), a Forum of the Institute for Supply Management®
(ISM®).
I am excited about our upcoming 83rd annual conference,
which will be held in Orlando, on September 21, 2014 with a char-
ity golf tournament and concluding on September 24, 2014, with
one of our signature program components, the UPMG Bench-
marking Workshop for participating utilities.
Duke Energy is the host utility for the 2014, UPMG experi-
ence and is excited to sponsor this educational venue to support
the 2014 UPMG theme: Shaping the Supply Chain of Tomorrow:
Strategic Solutions, Talent Management, Process Excellence.
Over the years, UPMG has grown significantly and the annual
conference has continued to be recognized within the utility sup-
ply chain industry as one of the premier events to attend. It is the
commitment of the UPMG officers, board of directors and I as
chair to continue this momentum and offer a meaningful educa-
tional pursuit for its attendees.
We all can attest to the challenges we face within the utility
industry and the importance supply chain brings to opera-
tional excellence and financial acuity.
The planning committee is aggressively finalizing details
of the program agenda and it promises to be a worthwhile
