The Echoing
Green:
By: Joshua Prager
The date was Octo-ber 3, 1951: the cul-mination of the most improbable comeback in the history of baseball. The New York Gi-ants were trailing the Brooklyn Dodg-ers by 13 1/2 games in early August. But on this fall day at the Polo Grounds an improbable hero would accomplish the unthinkable: hitting a home run to give the Giants the National League pennant and a trip to the World Series. In The Echoing Green: The Untold Story of Bobby Thomson, Ralph Branca, and The Shot Heard Round The World, Wall Street Journal reporter, Joshua Prager expands on a story he first re-ported in 2001: baseball's most fa-mous home run may have been aided by a telescope employed by the New York Giants to steal signs from the Brooklyn Dodgers. ~Judy Marshall

Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman
Led by
Connie Fiasche
For more than two hundred years, the Owens women had been blamed for eve-rything that went wrong in their Massa-chusetts town. And Gillian and Sally en-dured that fate as well: As children, the sisters were forever outsiders, taunted, talked about, pointed at. Their elderly aunts almost seemed to encourage the whispers of witchery, with their musty house and their exotic concoctions and their crowd of black cats. But all Gillian and Sally wanted was to escape. One would do so by marrying, the other by running away. But the bonds they shared, even into adulthood, brought them back--almost as if by magic.

KB’s Corner
By Karen Bowman, Fitness Instructor
I t's that time of year again! Surf's up dudes and duddettes! Summer is here! So it's a special time to enjoy healthy eating on the grill with lots of fresh fruit and veggies. You can replace all that chilli and pizza dur-ing the winter for healthy, light salads and desserts!!
So the next part of the equation is to keep the body moving. Certainly I ad-vocate a long evening walk, a swim in the pool or a round of golf or tennis. HOWEVER, specific sports do require specific conditioning!
I’ve had the privilege of doing sports conditioning for a variety of sports. And with each sport there is a counter balance of strength, stretching and cardio requirements to excel at that sport. Even if you are not into sports you may say; "well, why do I need to lift weights, or get my heart rate going? I'm enjoying a little more of a leisurely approach to exer-cise""...Muscles need to continue being fed blood flow and be awakened. Meaning, if you vacuum you use all kinds of muscles, making the bed, car-rying bags of groceries, all of which require specific strength and lengthen-ing of muscles. And with a stronger built body frame, one's balance will im-prove as well as an overall tone to the body. Not to mention, weight loss, because it burns more calories while doing it BONUS...there's an after burn!!!!
My point is that our exercise classes at Carillon are there to round out your healthy lifestyle. Not only do we weight train, stretch and get the heart pumping, we learn to challenge our minds with routines that demand your focus "in the moment concentration that reboosts new brain neurons!! How amazing is that!?? And if you choose to party down, Zumba is the most fun you can have while exercising.
Oh sweet summer! It's calling you to the clubhouse...I'll be waiting there to be...In Step with YOU!
