THE WEDDING CHECKL IST

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ENGAGEMENT! This is an exciting time, and deserving of celebration.

However, you do not want to let your head stay in the clouds for too long. After all, you have a wedding to plan! Are you ready? Then let’s get started!

Page 13: Spotlight Fall 2014 Northwest Edition

ORGAN IZE E VE RY TH I N GWhile this may seem like something you can do later on, this is a very important step.

¨ Get a big and sturdy folder to stuff everything in. You’ll be putting all your research in here, like band choices and location ideas. You’ll also want to use this folder to keep receipts and other wedding related documents in here. You may use more than one folder, of course.

DATE SOf course it is simple, but it is imperative. Get the dates set as soon as possible.

¨ Get the wedding date set. After all, this is the big day that everything else is revolving around. Consider the seasons. Do you want your wedding framed with green grass or white snow? Perhaps you would prefer the reds and oranges of autumn? ¨ Set a date for your rehearsal dinner. This should be no more than a week before the wedding itself, but preferably not the day before either. ¨ If you are having an engagement party, that should be set for a date not too far off from the engagement. Of course, you cannot just call everyone you know and tell them to come over that day after he proposed. Give your guests at least a month’s notice before expecting their presence at these events. ¨ Bachelor and bachelorette parties are usually planned by the best man and maid-of-honor respec-tively. This isn’t your job to plan this party. However, you should insure that your friends don’t plan the parties on dates that are inconvenient for you.

CO N S I D E R TH E COORD I NATO RIf you go down this list, and ask how on earth you are going to be able to do all of this, you may want to consider getting a wedding coordinator.

¨ Interview coordinators at your discretion. If you have family and friends that would love to help out, you may not need a professional coordinator after all. It really is up to you if you choose to do so, hire a coordinator.

MO N E Y M AKE S TH E WE D D I N GNo matter who is paying, you need to work out a budget.

¨ WORK OUT A BUDGET FOR THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES... ¨ Location fees (for both the ceremony and the reception) ¨ Invitations ¨ Food and drink ¨ Clothing and Makeup (this includes the bride’s dress, make up, and accessories, as well as the groom’s tuxedo) ¨ Decor (decorations for both venues) ¨ Service fees (for the officiant, the caterers, the florist, the photographer, the band/DJ, etc) ¨ Wedding Rings ¨ Stationary (for invites and programs) ¨ Transportation and After-Wedding Lodging

KE E P YOU R G U E S T S U P TO DATE

Invitations and save-the-dates are pretty much crucial if you want people to come. Thankfully, there are other ways that people are keeping their guest list up to speed.

¨ Prepare the guest list. You want to decide who should come from your family and friends and his family and friends. ¨ Prepare the invitations and R.S.V.P. cards to send to each household you are inviting.¨ A wedding website. You can make free websites and blogs from various places like Wordpress and Blogger.

All white? Something blue? Or a splash of everything? Design plays a huge role during the big day.

¨ Think colors. Do you want one or two? Maybe more? Whatever you choose, just make sure the colors do not clash. ¨ Think clothes. What style of dress do you want to wear? What kind of suit do you want him to wear? What do you want your bridesmaids to wear? What do you want the groomsmen to wear? These are very important details.¨ You can get a lot of ideas from magazines and websites. Take clippings and printouts to put in your wedding folder.

YOU R WE D D I N G PART Y

¨ Start thinking about who you want in your wedding party. Start asking your girlfriends you would like as your bridesmaids if they want to be in the wedding. Have your groom start thinking about what guys he wants as his groomsmen.

¨ Decide upon and finalize all the formalwear. This includes the mens’ tuxedoes, the girls’ dresses and all accessories.

PL AC E YOUR ORD E RS

After having envisioned what you want things to look like, it is time to get specific.

¨ Find specifics. Choose the stores and specific items. Then, buy them. ¨ Find and pick out your dress. ¨ Then order it. ¨ Find and pick out his tux.

Page 15: Spotlight Fall 2014 Northwest Edition

¨ Then have him order it. ¨ Find and pick out your decorations. ¨ Then order them. ¨ Find and pick out your bridesmaids’ dresses. ¨ Then have them order them.

¨ Also find the services you want. ¨ Find a catering service you like. ¨ Then hire them. ¨ Find a photographer & videographer you like. ¨ Then hire them. ¨ Find a bakery you like for the cake. ¨ Then hire them.

¨ Don’t forget the stationary. ¨ Print out and mail your invitations if you haven’t done so already. ¨ Have the programs designed and printed.

TH E LE GAL S TU F F

As much of a personal, emotional event this is, it is also a legal ceremony.

¨ Find an officiant. Whether you want a religious leader or just someone who had “the power vested in” them ¨ Take care of the legal documents. You will need to apply for a wedding certificate at your local city hall.

TH E WE E K BE FOREAll the effort is accumulating this week.

¨ Have the rehearsal dinner. Rehearse the ceremony as many times as it takes to get it right. Then treat your attendees to a small dinner. During the dinner, you may want to also practice the ceremony.

¨ Call everyone to double-check things. ¨ Call the caterer. ¨ Call the photographer. ¨ Call the officiant.

¨ Call the florist. ¨ Call the band/DJ.

TH E DAY OFThe time has come...

¨ Pay everyone whom you haven’t yet paid.

¨ Relax.

¨ Enjoy the day and all the beautiful memories that are sure to follow.

Lou was amazing! Not only were the photos stunning but she was so personable and definitely made our day less stressful. Our families loved her, and she did a great job of engaging with everyone in the party and worked hard to remember everyone’s name.

Hiring a PhotographerNow that you’ve set your wedding date and booked the venue, the next important step is to hire the perfect photographer. Since most established wedding photographers are booked out nine to twelve months you don’t want to put this one off. We sat down with Mary Lou Guinn from Point of View by Lou Photography to find out a few important tips for finding the photographer that suits you.

What is one of the most important qualities that a couple should look for in a wedding photographer? A great personality! Seriously! It is so important that a bride and groom really like the photographer that is going to be so much a part of their big day. You want your day to be filled with nothing but happy memories so choose someone that you can relax and have fun with – while they take great pictures.

What is one thing that most people overlook when hiring a photographer. Training. You definitely want your photographer to be up to date on all the latest techniques and methods. In addition to being a seasoned wedding professional your wedding photographer should stay current through industry training. Classes and workshops should be part of their yearly schedule because there is simply so much to know.

What other advice would you give to a bride and groom when choosing a photographer? Trust yourself. Choosing a photographer is very personal. The photography style that you prefer is probably much different than your best friend or your aunt. So trust your own instincts and make your own decision. You’ll be much happier with your photos if you do.

What should the bride and groom consider when planning their budget for wedding photography? Think of your wedding photos as an heirloom investment – not an expense. Your enjoyment of your photos will just grow with time. These priceless photos captured at this once in a lifetime event will live on. They will be treasured by you and your family more and more with the passing of each anniversary.

How did you become a wedding photographer? Coming from a large family, my life has always been filled with people, family and laughter. Early on I became ridiculously passionate about capturing real emotions and personality in my photos. I love learning, so I sought out training to become a classic portrait artist, but it really has taken years to fine tune my natural intuitiveness to capture the most authentic moments. It is the greatest thrill–and honor–to be trusted to preserve the memories from a families’ most important events.

A N THE I A BA LLROOMSimple Elegance

Nestled in the heart of Snohomish historic district, Antheia Ballroom sits, waiting to be filled with

beautiful couples to come tie the knot. Originally built in the 1920s, Antheia Ballroom has gone through

many transformations but has held on to its original charm. Completely renovated eight years ago, the

Ballroom has recaptured its true essence as a richly romantic place to get married or renew your mar-

riage vows.

The Ballroom provides an intimate space for small to

midsize weddings (capacity: 120 guests). With cus-

tom chandeliers, suites for both the bride and group,

and covered gardens that can be enjoyed year round,

you can create an event that will suite your vision no

matter what date your heart is set on. Additionally the

Schoolhouse, a building adjacent to the garden and

in 90 seconds are only the tip of the iceberg! The only way to make this better is the catering policy: you

can use any caterer or self-cater at no additional fee! Rounding out the features of the building is the

fully stocked bar including glassware for all drink types, coffee service, and other amenities needs for

beverage service at your event.

1 The Groom’s Suite: Most event venues don’t have a special place for the groom to get ready and

hang out with his guys. Filled with plenty of seating, sink, and 46 inch f lat screen TV, it is hard to con-

vince them to get down to the ceremony. The suite also provides a place for young guests to rest during

the late hours of the reception.

2 The Bridal Suite: Included in the Bridal Suite is ample seating, large three way mirror, three per-

son vanity for bridesmaids to prepare, private bathroom with shower, and private kitchen.

gardens are designed to be lush year round, lit to be enjoyed at all times of days, and are totally covered

to protect you and your guests from rain and sun.

4 Air Conditioning: The entire ballroom and Schoolhouse are fully air conditioned to bring relief to

your guests during the warm months of summer.

Written By:Monique Brigham Plu m eria Breezes Travel w w w.plu m eriabreezestravel.co m

Every year m ore and m ore couples are opting for destination weddings over traditional ones. Whether you want a sexy and fun wedding in the Caribbean or a ro m antic and serene wedding in Santorini, Greece, a destination wedding can save you a lot of m oney and hassle. Not only will you already m ost likely be at your honeym oon location for your destination wedding but you will have a lot less guests to worry about if you have any guests at all.

One destination wedding location I reco m m end to my clients in my travel business is Cancun. Now, before you shut it down in your mind as just a spring break hot spot for drunk college students, consider the fact that Cancun is known for its white sand beaches, gorgeous views, bright blue water and resorts with world class acco m m odations. With that said, here are so m e

of my ideas for a wonderful destination wedding in Cancun:

Go for an all-inclusive resort. My goal when working with clients is to give the m the m ost bang for their buck. That is one reason why I love all-inclusive resorts. I thoroughly enjoy finding a m azing experiences that exceed your every desire but not your budget. With an all-inclusive resort you know exactly what you are paying for upfront and you know you won’t have to worry about budgeting while on your trip.

So m e of the all-inclusive resorts I reco m m end in Cancun are the Hard Rock Hotel (Yes, they do all inclusive packages there too!), Drea ms Riviera, Jade Riviera, Now Sapphire Riviera, Secrets Capri Riviera, Secrets Maro m a Beach and Secrets The Vine Cancun. At an all-inclusive resort your drinks, your m eals, a lot of your entertain-m ent, your roo m and board are all included in one fee. Each of these re-sorts is four-star A A A rated and of-fers top notch luxury fro m the m o m ent

you arrive.

1

Travel during the peak season. There is a reason Dece m ber to April is peak season in Cancun. Peak season is when the weather is near perfect every sin-gle day. The only tim e I would suggest avoiding Cancun is mid-March to early April when those pesky spring breakers I spoke of earlier m ake their way into town.

2

Expect a lot of paperwork and red tape for your wedding. For a wedding in Mexico to be recognized as legal in the United States you will have to sub mit an application and a blood test and wait for approval for a wedding permit. A way to bypass this paperwork is to get m arried in a U.S. court and have a co m mitm ent cere m ony in lieu of a “wedding” cere m ony when you get to

Mexico.

3

Buy travel insurance. Even though the weather is near perfect during the tim e I reco m m end couples get m ar-ried in Cancun, anything can happen. You don’t want so m e unforeseen event ruining your wedding and costing you m oney you can’t get back.

4

Choose a reputable travel agent to handle your trip. With the rise in popularity for destination weddings also co m es a rise in sca ms and noth-ing is worse than thinking you have a flight planned and a roo m reserved only to learn you’ve been duped. Get references and do your ho m ework!

5

I believe that these tips and ideas will get you on the right track in planning for your big day. Good luck in your up-co ming nuptials. I hope that your des-tination wedding will be the best expe-rience of your life!
