A Cutting-Edge Spring Planned at Whitaker CenterAfter a long and bone-chilling winter, we are eagerly anticipating the warmer weather of spring and summer at Whitaker Center. This is a particularly exciting time of the year with the arrival of new exhibits in Harsco Science Center, a line-up of stellar live performing arts in Sunoco Performance Theater and an array of exciting films in the totally immersing Select Medical Digital Cinema.

In the science center, you can enter the world of Animation, a limited-time engagement of 7,000 square feet of hands-on exhibits in Gloria M. Olewine Gallery opening on May 23. Children and adults will explore of the process of animation, story creation, and animator techniques and tools. Over 30 highly interactive exhibits will help visitors discover why art and math are important allies when creating characters, motion and change.

In Sunoco Performance Theater we will be featuring a number of living legends in the months to come. Highlights from a remarkable lineup of performers include Steven Wilson on May 23, Beth Hart on June 21, David Crosby on June 23 and Dweezil Zappa, who will be performing the music of his father, legendary guitarist Frank Zappa, on July 30.

Our newest education program, Girls in STEM, will offer week-long science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) camps in June and July exclusively for girls in grades four through eight. In the last three months, we have welcomed over 300 young girls to Whitaker Center to explore fun and challenging STEM learning experiences. The program was launched with funding from the Stabler Foundation and represents a multi-year initiative at Whitaker Center to engage young girls with STEM.

Also in the months ahead, we will be able to present an unprecedented number of giant screen films in the regular schedule given the flexibility provided by our new digital projector in Select Medical Digital Cinema. In addition to Jerusalem 3D, Pandas: the Journey Home 3D and Grand Canyon Adventure 3D, we will be premiering D-Day Normandy 1944, narrated by Tom Brokaw, on June 6. The extraordinary quality of the sound track and the crystal clear images on the largest screen in Central Pennsylvania will bring the scenes from D-Day alive for visitors of all ages.

We look forward to seeing you at Whitaker Center in the near future. We encourage you to take advantage of all that we offer so that every member of your family can come to know that Whitaker Center is the place to discover it all!

David CrosbyPresented by

Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Tuesday, June 23 / Sunoco Performance Theater, 8pm

Legendary singer-songwriter and social justice activist David Crosby is a two time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, inducted as a member of both the iconic folk-rock band The Byrds — with whom he first rose to stardom — and the iconic Woodstock era-defining group Crosby, Stills & Nash.

Crosby began his career as a folksinger, playing clubs and coffeehouses nationwide. Back in L.A. in ‘63, Crosby formed The Byrds with Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke, winning widespread recognition for his songwriting and charismatic presence.

Crosby left The Byrds in 1967 to embark on a lifelong collaboration with Graham Nash and Stephen Stills. Renowned for vocal harmonies, stellar musicianship and timeless songs, Crosby, Stills, & Nash have been called “the voice of a generation,” and were GRAMMY-honored in 1969 as Best New Artist. Crosby continues to tour and record with CSN, as well as with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and as a duo with Graham Nash.

Crosby’s most recent release is 2004’s Crosby-Nash, a 2-CD set with Graham Nash, their first as a duo since 1976’s. Voyage, a 3-disc, career-spanning retrospective box set touching on all aspects of Crosby’s oeuvre, was released in 2006.

Zappa Plays ZappaPresented by

Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Thursday, July 30 / Sunoco Performance Theater, 8pm

As a child in the Zappa family home, Dweezil Zappa recalls idolizing his father’s amazing musical gifts as a composer and guitarist. After his father passed away in 1993 he felt moved to do something to honor Frank’s life and pure talent; thus Zappa Plays Zappa emerged.

Dedicated to keeping Frank Zappa’s sound alive, Zappa plays Zappa embodies the familiar and authentic rock style of the legendary artist. Dweezil Zappa, Scheila Gonzales, Ryan Brown, Ben Thomas, Chris Norton, and Kurt Morgan make up the talented group of musicians. The band uses their abilities to continue Zappa’s musical tradition, down to the classic Halloween show in New York Frank Zappa performed every year. Lead guitarist, Dweezil Zappa says, “We are the conduit for people to hear Frank’s music; we really want the music to go into the future being known for what it is.”

The globally recognized music group achieved great success in 2009 when they won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance, honoring their instrumental “Peaches en Regalia” performance. In addition, their growing fan base in multiple countries testifies to the band’s admirable talent.

As a benefit of a $75 ticket purchase guests are invited to bring their guitar and learn techniques for “Dweezil Zappa Guitar Masterclass- “Dweezilla On The Road.”

A Tribute to Courage, Competence and Commitment Opens June 6

June 6, 1944: The largest Allied operation of World War II began in Normandy, France. Exploring history, military strategy, science, technology and human values, the film will educate and appeal to all. Narrated by Tom Brokaw, D-Day 3D: Normandy 1944 pays tribute to those who gave their lives for our freedom… A duty of memory, a duty of gratitude.

Pandas: The Journey Home 3D, a groundbreaking natural-history film, captures for the first time in 3D the

highly endangered giant pandas living in Wolong National Nature Reserve in the People’s Republic of China.

Directed by Nicolas Brown and produced by Caroline Hawkins of Oxford Scientific Films, Pandas: The Journey Home 3D, is a documentary the explores the decades of its captive breeding program; the center has hit its 300 giant pandas, and must now tackle the challenge of reintroducing breeding populations to the wild.

Visit whitakercenter.org for showtimes. Rated NR. Running Time: 45min.

Whitaker Center Creates Girls in STEM ProgrammingTo promote science, technology, engineering and math with young women, organizations across the nation have recognized the importance of engaging girls in grades 4 to 8 in STEM age-appropriate fun and collaborative activities and programs. This need is even more pronounced in economically-disadvantaged areas, whose female students will benefit even more from the long-term STEM programming.

Whitaker Center is pleased to announce the creation and success of an initiative designed to connect hundreds of girls to STEM education made possible by a significant commitment from The Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation. The Stabler Foundation has awarded $750,000, or $150,000 a year for five years, to help create the Girl in STEM program.

After receiving the financial support necessary from the Stabler Foundation, Whitaker Center education staff created two unique opportunities. The first was a free one-day experience where girls in grades 4-8 and a parent or guardian could participate in up to nine activities. Titled Girls in STEM Sundays, there were scheduled for January 18, February 15, March 15, and September 13. The first three Sundays welcomed nearly 200 guests each and reservations are strong for the September date.

Following the STEM activities guests are invited to explore the Science Center.

The second opportunity is Girls in STEM camps which will be taking place June 15 through June 19 and July 27 through July 31 from 8:30am until 4:30pm. This is for girls who have completed grades 3 through 7. Each day will focus on a different aspect of science or engineering. Thank you to our Digital Conversion Project Donors!Whitaker Center is pleased to announce two new gifts to our Digital Conversion Project. The John Crain Kunkel Foundation donated $100,000 to the project and Très Bonne Année donated $140,000. We want to thank both of these organizations for their generous support!

A digital revolution has transformed the commercial movie theaters over the past five years with 84% of the 19,000 theaters in North America now using digital projection systems. After launching a successful fundraising campaign in October of 2014, Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts took the first step in our Digital Conversion Project and converted to a digital projector and re-opened as the Select Medical Digital Cinema. The Digital Cinema provides the premier movie going experience in Central Pennsylvania, supports Whitaker Center’s reputation for quality and our educational mission, generates important revenue, and adds value to the visitor experience.

Let’s Give Our Volunteers A Hand! National Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 12-18

As Whitaker Center celebrates its 15th year, it’s a time to reflect and thank the many hands and hearts, which have helped Whitaker Center bring such engaging programs to Central Pennsylvania. Without the dedication of our ever-growing volunteer pool, the Center would not be as successful as it is today.

Our volunteers play an intricate role in every aspect of Whitaker Center’s operations. Some exciting volunteer opportunities include: ushering in Sunoco Performance Theater, assisting guests at our Information Desk, and expanding a guest’s knowledge about an exhibit inside Harsco Science Center.

Without volunteers, Whitaker Center would not be able to provide the many diverse services visitors enjoy. Thank you to everyone who has had a hand in Whitaker Center. We couldn’t have done it without you!

As we celebrate National Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 12-18, Whitaker Center would like to express a great big THANK YOU to all of our volunteers for their dedication and selfless giving!

If you are interested in becoming a member of this elite team please visit whitakercenter.org or contact Katie Hicks, Volunteer and Membership Coordinator at [email protected] or 717-724-3857.

THEY SAVED MY LIFE.

I’M SO GRATEFUL.

Steve Wiley, Harrisburg

Know us before you need us.His CT scan showed a tear in his aorta, a condition that’s usually fatal. Steve’s wife and daughter said their goodbyes, but the cardiovascular team at Harrisburg Hospital provided hope. In emergency surgery, Dr. Mubashir Mumtaz and the PinnacleHealth CardioVascular Institute team repaired Steve’s heart.

“The care was outstanding. Dr. Mumtaz and his team brought me through this. I would recommend them to anyone needing any type of heart procedure.”
