Longtime friends reload under new coach
By Valley Record Staff
On a rainy March afternoon, Elliott Cribby eyed the dozens of uniformed boys drilling on the Mount Si baseball field, knowing that some wouldn’t be back the next week.
“I owe it to them to give them a good turnout,” he said. “It’s going to be some tough cuts.”
Days later, the varsity team took shape. At its core: a group of tight-knit seniors who should give Cribby, the new Wildcats baseball head coach, the chance to fulfill some expectations.
Prior to the start of the sea-son, Cribby saw promise as returners hit the speed camp and weight room.
With seniors Tim Proudfoot at shortstop and Dustin Breshears at second, “I think
we’ve got the best infield in the state,” Cribby said. “I’ve been around baseball for years, I can confidently state that.”
Other veteran returners to watch include Shane Dixon, Cooper Helm and Ryan Atkinson. Senior Robb Lane will be a big attribute, Trevor Lane brings a big bat, and junior Reese Karalus will also be a major force behind the plate and on the mound.
Team cohesion goes back to elementary days.
“I’ve been playing with most of the core group since we were All-Stars, since we were 10,
11, 12,” said Breshears. “Our team chemistry is good. We all know each other. A lot of us have been playing varsity since freshman year.”
“We’ve got a lot of tal-ent. We’re all working hard,” Proudfoot said. “We all have the same goals—to win state. We’re all feeding off each other and working as a team, instead of individuals.”
Proudfoot said the team has warmed to their new coach.
“It seems like we’re all on board with what he’s teaching us,” he said.
As far as Kingco opposi-
tion goes, Lake Washington, who dropped down from 4A, brings a strong tradition. Mercer Island went to state last year, and Liberty and Bellevue may also be tough.
“It’s a pretty good league, top to bottom,” Cribby said. “A few teams are working back up, but I’d say it’s strong.”
Mount Si assistant coach-es include Craig Parthemer, Jeremy Faoro, Craig Webber, Pete Wilkinson and Ron Wold.

A small core of veterans round out a big freshman component of the Mount Si fastpitch team’s 2011 squad.
Senior returners include catcher Danielle Massengill, left fielder Kassidy Maddux and third basewoman Carly Wiedenbach. Also back is junior shortstop Maura Murphy and sophomores Lauren Smith and Miranda Rawlings.
Likely freshman starters include sisters Nikki and Jennifer Carroll, Celine Fowler and Lauren Padilla.
Maddux sees the Wildcats coming together as a team in 2011.
“We have talent that we can build on,” she said. “The freshmen are cool, they have a lot of talent. There’s a lot of them.”
“We can be a better team this year,” added Rawlings.
For these girls, a state appearance is always the goal. Maddux said little victories will have to come first, including league play-offs and districts.
Shortstop starterAt shortstop, Murphy
will be a key piece of the Lady Wildcats’ defense. The 17-year-old plays during the summer on the Puyallup-
based Washington Lady Hawks club team. As a ninth grader, “I played all over the place,” but as
a sophomore, “we kind of shook things up, and that’s where I fit in,” she said.

Mount Si High School girls tennis recharges with big senior squad
By Valley Record Staff
This could be a big year for the Mount Si High School girls tennis team, and the squad’s seniors want the world to know it.
Practicing out of the rain in the school gym last week, team captain Shelby Thomas decided the place needed redecorating.
“I want a banner on our wall,” the senior said. “We need something”—posters first, a trophy later.
Thomas is back for her fourth year on the team, and team captain for her third sea-son. She and fellow members of the Wildcats’ varsity nucleus look to lead a sizable girls team,
blessed with a big turnout this year, to the postseason.
“It’s good that we have this many to choose from,” said Thomas, who drilled with varsity players as a gymful of newcomers tried out in the auxiliary gym next door. “If we can get the freshmen started, they can carry it. The earlier they start, the better.”
Thomas herself started
playing at age 8, quickly picking up the sport. By 15, she was teaching lessons at
the Pine Lake Athletic Club
