SPORTS PROFESSIONALS DISCUSS TRENDS AND HOW
TO GET YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR
Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Students and SPT Associate
Professor Dr. Peter Finley served as a moderator as 5 representa-
tives of South Florida sports spent nearly 2 hours giving students
great advice about the business of sports. Each participant shared
their paths to where they are today. All agreed that they are chal-
lenged to find ways to create revenue through technology whether
it be through social media or specialized apps. Tips for the stu-
dents included volunteering, networking, meeting as many people
as possible, fostering relationships and making communication a
priority. When you submit a resume, take your time to fit it to the
specific job you are seeking. Another theme which ran through
the panel was the importance of teamwork. Don’t be afraid to
roll up your sleeves! Thanks to Emilio Lorenzo of Career Devel-
opment and his staff for making this event and others during
Business Week available to the students.
SITE VISIT WITH CARDESHA LYONS
SPECIAL OLYMPICS
Cardesha Lyons is doing a practicum with Special Olympics this semester. One of Cardesha’s
assignments is to create an awareness by the NSU community that Special Olympics is housed
on the NSU campus. Earlier this semester she and fellow members of the Business of Sport
Student Association volunteered at Strikers Lanes. They helped keep score and interacted with
the athletes. Now Cardesha is helping promote the upcoming 10th Annual 5K Run/Walk
which is slated for Saturday, November 7, 2015 with an 8 AM start time on the NSU Campus.
Directly after the race, there will be a Carnival of Champions. This carnival will also be the
kick-off of NSU's Homecoming where there will be FREE food, music, entertainment, celebri-
ties games, and mascots!
Special Olympics in Broward County serves 3,100 individuals with intellectual disabilities in
22 sports on a year round basis. The event is open to the public. NSU students can participate
in the race for free. There are special incentives for NSU student organizations who partici-
pate.
For more information contact [email protected] or call 954-262-2150.
