We Keep Active Bodies in Perpetual Motion With Arthroscopy & More

Most people associate sports medicine with injured athletes seeking diagnosis, treatment and relief.

And while that’s an important focus of this highly specialized field, it’s not the only focus. Sports medicine encompasses so much more than that. Specialists in this area of medicine can also offer athletes tips and advice to improve performance.

What’s more, you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit from sports medicine. People who exercise regularly, and even those who don’t, can improve function and mobility with the help of a sports medicine specialist.

We’ll Keep You in the GameOne of the keys to peak athletic performance is staying free of pain and injury. At Kayal Orthopaedic Center, we specialize in sports medicine and have the knowledge and expertise to guide you in ways to keep your joints and muscles limber, lowering your risk of injury.

For example, it’s important to wear proper shoes and use the right equipment—and to replace them when they wear out or become unsafe. It’s also important to warm up and stretch properly before beginning exercise and to cool down appropriately after exercise. Conditioning, strength training and cross training also give you an edge when it comes to avoiding injury.

And that’s not all. Learning the proper techniques of your particular sport or activity is critical to your safety, along with knowing your limits and not overdoing it.

Sometimes, however, injuries are unavoidable. When you’re hurt, you are in the right place at Kayal Orthopaedic Center. Our team will explore nonsurgical treatments whenever possible. Quite often, sports injuries can be treated without invasive surgery.

TREATMENT OPTIONS INCLUDE:Learning to move in new ways that eliminate pain

Physical therapy

Orthobiologics, such as platelet rich plasma and other injections

And, of course, the restorative power of rest can never be underestimated.

Arthroscopy: A Key PlayerIf more extensive surgery is necessary, our team uses arthroscopy and other minimally invasive procedures whenever possible to reduce pain, scarring and blood loss and to improve recovery and rehabilitation.

We use arthroscopic surgery frequently and effectively to treat injured athletes. It’s a surgical procedure that is less invasive than traditional surgery, allowing you to heal more quickly with less pain. Our surgeons use a camera and special tools to make small incisions. Arthroscopic surgery also allows for shorter hospital stays and often can be performed on an outpatient basis. Plus, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you heal and return to your normal activities, training schedules and competitions.

Knee InjuriesKnees are one of the most vulnerable parts of an athlete’s body. Strains and tears are common because the knee is made up of many tendons and ligaments that can be damaged from the stress and strain of sports and other activities. Serious knee problems that require attention from an orthopaedic or sports medicine specialist include:

Medial & Lateral Meniscal Tears

MCL & LCL Tears

ACL Tears

PCL Tears

Treatments of knee injuries range from rest to arthroscopy to reconstructive surgery.

Rotator Cuff ProblemsThe rotator cuff is a part of the shoulder made of many tendons and muscles. It is used more frequently in certain sports, like baseball. Overuse can result in bursitis, tendinitis and tears. Treatments include rest, pain medication, cortisone injections, electrical stimulation and surgery.

Sprains & Strains Sprains occur in ligaments, which are the soft tissues connecting your bones to your joints.Strains occur in muscles or tendons when they are stretched or torn. Treatments of sprains and strains include rest, ice, bandages and pain medication. Your doctor might also eventually recommend physical therapy to help ease you back into activity.

Broken Bones Fractures are fairly common for athletes. They can occur in a variety of ways, including falls and collisions with other players. When a bone is fractured, the pain can be excruciating. A fractured bone also can result in swelling, bruising, tingling, sensitivity, numbness and limited mobility. The sports medicine experts at Kayal Orthopaedic Center have the training and expertise to diagnose and treat fractures quickly and effectively. Depending on the severity of the break and other factors, they will use treatment methods such as casts, splints and surgery.

DislocationsFractures aren’t the only sports-related injuries that can cause severe pain. Dislocations can be extremely painful, too. They involve the joints and can occur in the shoulders, knees, fingers, toes, hips, ankles, elbows and jaw. Treatment varies but usually involves maneuvering the bones back into position and providing a sling or splint to limit or prevent movement as the injured area heals. Your doctor will also most likely prescribe pain medication and recommend rehabilitation when appropriate.
