High School Sports Dreams• From a young age, many

children dream of being a part of a high school sports team.

• Prior to even being high school aged, young people are already heavily training in various athletic disciplines.

• The parents are spending thousands of dollars at a time and most of them feel the experience is totally worth it.

Price By Sport• Depending on the sport being

played, the pricing varies for seasonal or year-round involvement.

• One season on downhill skiing may cost $4,000 while football exists on the opposite end of the spectrum by coming in a only $200 for one season.

• Other sports that likely have students training all year may cost up to $10,000. These sports may include figure skating, gymnastics, and competitive dance.

High Prices, Why?• A reason for the high pricing is a result youth

sports’ costs rising over the years.

• Particularly in the last three decades, families have gotten used to spending more than ten percent of their gross income. This tidbit was pointed out by Professor Nicole Lavoi from the University of Minnesota who focuses on sociology studies surrounding youth sports.

• According to some applicable studies, some parents fund their children’s involvement in sports with the aim that they may receive a college scholarship from playing in high school.

• Unfortunately, the reality is that only 0.5% of all athletes at the high school level receive all encompassing scholarship award for college.

High School Teams• Lavoli makes it clear that even

training children with the hopes of making their high school team may appear un-beneficial. If 1,000 students are training in the community with the hope of all making their high school soccer team, for example, this goal is misguided.

• There will never be enough spots to accommodate everyone. Sports parents such as Shawn Reid understand that most importantly, investing in a these experiences for a child is merely an investment in their character.
