Chronos makes any watch smartSmart watches have their enthusiasts, as can be seen from the successful crowdfunding campaign of multiple Pebble watches and the estimated  7 million Apple Watches out in the wild. Even so, smart watch adoption has been slower than many would like as consumers are waiting for something with longer battery life, robust functionality and beauty. Chronos seeks to alleviate this pain point for some consumers by converting their current dumb watch into a smart watch using a magnetic disc that sticks to the back.

The Chronos acts more like a smart band than a fully functional smart watch. It is capable of fitness tracking and vibration for notifications, and includes multicolored LED lights around the edge to give users visual cues about their notifications. Users can select what colors correlate with which apps using the Chronos iOS app so they do not have to guess what the notification is for. An Android app is expected by the time the device launches this year. A simple push down on the watch will dismiss the notification. It has all the necessities of a smart watch, but users who want a touch interface or want to be able to give voice commands to their watch will find it lacking.

Chronos is ideal for those who do not want to leave behind their most stylish traditional watch but would also appreciate the functions of a smart band. Fitness tracking is an especially growing market with many dedicated devices, even ones like Jawbone that do not include a screen, available for just this task. The device does add a little bulk under the watch, according to early reviews, but it apparently fits well on larger watches and those withleather straps.

There will no doubt be many manufacturers attempting to emulate this kind of function for less than the $99 that Chronos is charging. Xiaomi appears to think it can offer a quality fitness tracker for about $16. The key for Chronos and successful competitors, though, will likely be subtle and elegant hardware combined with smart and feature-rich software.

Who’s buying smart watches?About 68 percent of smart watch owners are between 25 and 49 years old, with notifications and health tracking as the primary usage drivers, according to data compiled by Kantar Worldpanel.

The company surveyed nearly 11,000 people aged 16 and older, asking whether they owned smart watches and how they used them. While the survey found that only 3 percent of the US population owns a smart watch or a smart band, it also revealed some interesting demographic data about the buyers.

About 34 percent of smart watch buyers are 25 to 34 years old and another 34 percent are 35 to 49. Smart band owners skew a little younger, with 33 percent in the 25 to 34 range and 29 percent in the 34 to 49 range. It also turns out that women prefer smart bands while men choose smart watches. Among those

surveyed, 67 percent of smart watch owners were male while 58 percent of smart band owners were female. This also means women are spending less money on these wearables, as 70 percent of smart band owners spent no more than $150 on their wearable.

Notifications and health tracking were the most popular uses of smart watches and smart bands. Men prefer using the devices for notifications much more, with 65 percent employing the feature daily compared with 48 percent of women. The latter segment is more likely to use health tracking, however, with 46 percent using the feature daily versus 34 percent of men. Men were a little more likely to use fitness tracking specifically, with a ratio of 40 percent of men versus 37 percent of women using it daily. It is also notable that 57 percent of owners used their devices for mobile payments.

Samsung makes SoC for health-tracking wearablesSamsung has created a kind of system on a chip for wearables that is able to track health data. The product is called the Bio-Processor, and is now being mass produced. It includes analog front-end or AFE and power management ICs, an MCU, DSP and eFlash memory. With everything embedded on a single chip, it can “process five different biometric signals,” according to vice president of marketing Ben K. Hur. So Samsung has created a more efficient chip for wearables that can monitor health “without the need for external processing parts.”

Do wearables need their own unique SoC? It could be beneficial to have a base set of sensors used across such devices. It could also mean more consistent results if these chips become the norm. Samsung said the AFEs included are bioelectrical impedance analysis, photoplethysmogram, electrocardiogram, skin temperature andgalvanic skin response. These ICs are used to measure “body fat, and skeletal muscle mass, heart rate, heart rhythm, skin

temperature and stress level.”

This is another useful innovation but may take time for other suppliers to match. China chipmakers such as Rockchip and Allwinner have been able to make headway getting their SoCs into cheaper devices, but they are still outcompeted in R&D by major industry players, including Qualcomm, Samsung and MediaTek. It may not be long before China companies start to produce similar chips, though.

Wearable shipments increase 172% in 2015Wearable shipments jumped 126.9 percent year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2015, IDC reports.

Vendors shipped 27.4 million units in the said period, with gains from sales of fitness trackers and the Apple Watch. Throughout 2015, vendors shipped 78.1 million units, an increase of 171.6 percent over 2014.

The new strong interest in wearables indicates more mass-market appeal than has previously been seen in this segment. “It shows that wearables are not just for the technophiles and early adopters; wearables can exist and are welcome in the mass market,” IDC research manager Ramon Llamas said.

The growth in fitness bands and activity trackers follows previous trends showing the biggest interest in wearables is for health-tracking features.

Consumers seem to be more open to trying out basic fitness bands for a low price such as the Mi Band from Xiaomi. The company’s wearable shipments grew

258.5 percent in the fourth quarter and saw a 951.8 percent increase in 2015 overall.

Xiaomi’s growth allowed it to narrowly beat out Apple in market share for the year, with 15.4 percent to Apple’s 14.9 percent. Fitbit had the most market share at 26.9 percent in 2015 and 29.5 percent in the fourth quarter.

Once again, Xiaomi is showing that low-cost China fitness bands have a place in the wearables market. In fact, low cost might be a feature of smart bands.

For consumers looking for some very minimal activity tracking, the value proposition of more expensive wearable devices might not sound appealing. Fitbit does occupy a middle ground, though, between the extreme budget devices from Xiaomi and the expensive, premium Apple Watch. Still, some Fitbit trackers sell for under $100, which is much less than the Apple Watch. It might not match the $15 Mi Band, but the price could be perceived as fair given Fitbit’s well-known brand and good reviews.
