Round 11 - 7:35pm Thursday October 8, Napier - Sky Sport 1

The ‘Bay’ took advantage of BOP’serratic defence to just get up. Theycould possibly drop one and still makethe semis but it wouldn’t want to bethis. With Waldrom, Guilford and Daggexcelling and Berquist’s accuracythat’s unlikely, albeit the carelesshandling and option issues. Countiesagain showed their talent for turningscraps into points out wide vCanterbury, but lack 80 minute grunt.

Round 11 - 7:35pm Friday October 9, Christchurch - Sky Sport 1

Despite an 11th table position andearly positives, the ‘ASAP Ratings’have Manawatu second last. They’vefought hard and got a few individualsbut they couldn’t compete up front orout back with Wellington. Canterburywere patchy away v Counties but willplan their run at the title now. Withplenty of ABs back and at home witha shield to protect you’d expect acomfortable win.

Round 11 - 7:35pm Friday October 9, Nplymouth - Sky Sport 2 (Replayed 9.30pm Sky Sport 1)

This should end the slim semi chancesof one. Taranaki brought cohesion, defence and some width v Otago ledby Tony Penn and Jason Eaton.Ripia’s territorial grasp continues togrow and that game would reallytrouble Auckland. The latter broughtsome urgency for a change and foundenough running chances to get over aflat Southland. Kaino. Afoa, andMoeke looked good but the team willface real unity here.

Round 11 - 2:35pm Saturday October 10, Dunedin - Sky Sport 1

Otago fought hard on Taranaki’s day. With Thompson inspiring they bringplenty to the breakdown and thelineout. Down south they’ll make ittough for Waikato who are now 5 from6. They’re looking more stable withLeonard, Donald and De Malmancheback. Sweeney is in everything and ifthey can lower the error rate and closesome holes they could make thesemis.

Round 11 - 5:30pm Saturday October 10, Invercargill - Sky Sport 1

Expect a gut buster. Both desperatelyneed this for the semis and playsimilar no nonsense rugby. Southlandwere flat, even Robinson’s kicking wasoff, v Auckland. Back home they’llshow, driven by the work rates ofRutledge and McIntosh. Tasmanagain adapted best to ugly conditionsin Whangarei. MacDonald, Goodman,Petenise and Cook are firing butmainly they bring team and can winthis too.

Round 11 - 7:35pm Saturday October 10, Albany - Sky Sport 1

BOP are another who remain in thesemi race. They battled tough v the‘Bay’, but defensive lapses eventuallycost them. NH were also downed in aclose one v Waikato. They pounce onerrors, can find wide and will havetargeted this. Still, you’d think theability of Bourke and Delaney tocontrol options will give them territoryand they’ll look to expose Harbour’soften sleepy defence.

Round 11 - 2:35pm Sunday October 11, Whangarei - Sky Sport 1

The stiff 1st half wind didn’t fazeNorthland who put in again vCanterbury. The reality is they lack theclass to break good line defences. They haven’t beaten Wellington since2000 and its difficult to see thatchanging here. The latter are findingsome shape despite missing ABs andinjury forced re-shuffles. Schwalger,Vito, Ramasy, Leuia, and Mathewsonare all standing up and Jane isexceptional.

Source: The All Sports and Prices Index (ASAP Index) produced by Cogito Limited. ASAP Ratings: The form guide is founded on the ‘ASAP Ratings’. After each game teams record a computerised rating. This rating is based on the scoring mechanism of the sport. Factors which go towards the rating include points differential and home/away percentages. The Graph: The graph tracks the trend of the ratings between the displayed dates and predicts the future margin before the addition of home advantage points for today’s game. Key: The form column indicates the last 6 matches. The home team is listed first. The ‘Value odds’ column indicates the odds required to gain value according to the ‘ASAP Ratings’. The ‘ASAP Margin’ forecasts the likely winning margin based on the ‘ASAP Ratings’. All Sports And Prices Index © Copyright 2009.

Meads Cup - 2:30pm Wednesday October 7, Ashburton

This looks a possible final again.Wanganui found the full team effortthey’d threatened v S Canty. Theybroke the latter with Middleton,Tikorituma, and Tyrell scoring at will.Mid Canty’s committed and abrasivepack held the territory their pivotsgained v H-Kapiti. In Ashburton thiscould be close, but you get the feelingMC will be better still in a few weeks.

Meads Cup - 2:30pm Wednesday October 7, Gisborne

Poverty Bay are hard to measure. They struggled v W Bush but turnedon a traditional late running attack andgot up on the whistle. You’d think inGisborne they could get H-Kapiti aswell but it wont be easy. The latterwere to loose against a tremendouslydetermined Mid Canty team. If theycan better respect possession theirown pack can match P Bay.

Meads Cup - 2:30pm Wednesday October 7, Timaru

W-Bush went down on the gong to PBay. With the points carry through thisis a must win. They’ve got will andteam ethic and Karaitiana is findinggood position. They’ll need to tightenthe defence and close S Canty’sexcellent half back Sekope Maea. SCanty were exposed by Wanganui butthey were served a ‘day of’ trip toWanganui. They should competebetter here.

Lochore Cup - 2:30pm Wednesday October 7, Te Aroha

This decade its 4-3 E Coast. Bothhave lost all 6 this season and in theHeartland Cship TV are on 11 straightlosses having not won since thismeeting last season. EC’s streak is 14.TV contested up front in the rain, butfailed at the loose ball v W Coast. They’re favoured to get this. EC wereflattened by a resurgent N Otago butthat fate waits others as well.

Lochore Cup - 2:30pm Wednesday October 7, Oamaru

North Otago got going to late. That’swhy they’re in the Lochore Cup.According to the ‘ASAP Ratings’ thedivision is a no contest. They openedup E Coast, winning by over 50 withten players scoring. Buller have beenclose often this season. They finallygot there second, tipping up KCountry. Higginson and Tafua deliverdecent work rates but its hard to seethem turning NO who are peaking.

Lochore Cup - 2:30pm Wednesday October 7, Te Kuiti

The merit of K Country’s win over SCanty the previous week was exposedwhen Wanganui beat the latter by over40 points. As it proved KC couldn’trepeat v Buller in Te Kuiti, done bygreater desire. W Coast’s pack stoodup in tough conditions v TV and theyfound some space later. Hughes andMerritt offer plenty of skills and evenup north WC should have too much.

Victory top the ‘ASAP Ratings’ for the 3rdweek. They’re now 3 straight after showingtoo much voltage up front for Roar. Muscatbrings not only infinite class but stability andFabiano, Hernandez, Thompson, Leijer, andMoss are all lifting. They’ll draw another20,000 plus here v Sydney who came with aseason best v CCM. They passed sharp anddominated possession, but will need it allhere.

Following their great away trot Glory failed toget the win over Fury at home. Against 10men for 55 mins, they couldn’t finish hit byanother albeit disputed blunder by GKVelaphi. The ‘Reds’ have the defence forGlory as they showed mostly keeping out a1st half onslaught from the Jets in a 1-1draw. Dodd failed, but if they bring their finishopposed to their slow starts this could goeither way.

Fury again showed above their table positiondrawing in Perth. Down to 10 for 55 mins, spirit and fortune got them a share of thepoints. They’ve a committed defence and willcompete even at Blue Tongue. CCM haven’thad the luck since the big win over GC. Theystruck Sydney at their best last week and aremissing Simon. Still, McGlinchy iscommanding the middle and Fury will findthem tough to break.

Although done in Melbourne, Roar playedwell across the park against the top ‘rater’.They lost Henrique in the process but if theycan finish better this is a chance. Bleibergand GC are yet to match the hype reflectedby a crowd of 4000 last week. Admittedlyshort staffed v Phoenix they rarely lookedlikely and were lucky to get a draw. Theyhave plenty to prove.

PREMIER LEAGUE MattersArsenal’s six goals v Blackburn and Chelseaimposing themselves 2-0 on Liverpool atStamford Bridge were among the highlightslast week, along with Portsmouth getting awin over Wolves, something their homesupporters are yet to see.

Arsenal moved to the top of the ‘ASAPRatings’ despite being 5th on the table. There’s under half a goal between the topfour and Bolton made the top ten. At theother end Hull, Wolves and Burnley are thethree lowest ranked.

Hull City got their 2nd, upsetting Wigan whocouldn’t reproduce the form that bowledChelsea the previous week. Its unlikley toassist the pressured management. Equallytroubled’if not more so, Portsmouth, on a 7loss streak, got one over Wolves. Theformer has a new owner, Saudi businessmanAli Al-Faraj.

The quality of the above wins should beconsidered in the light of their positions onthe ‘ASAP Ratings’. Prior, three of the fourwere the lowest ranked with Wigan ranked14.

Burnley came back from their 0-5 vTottenham with a hungry 2nd half to get up2-1 over Birmingham at home. The latternow has a Hong Kong based Chineseowner, Carsen Yeung’s Grandtop Holdings.Away to Bolton, Tottenham were downtwice in the match before getting out of TurfMoor with a predicted draw at 2-2.

Everton who were expected to wincomfortably at home to Stoke just manageda draw after a brilliant late strikers goal byLeon Osman. At Emirates Stadium, Arsenal, who had been labelled to win by 3 by the‘ratings’, delivered 6 goals pulverisingBlackburn 6-2.

At Old Trafford Manchester United werelooking certain to go down to Sunderlandbut the latter’s defence weakened whenRicardson was sent with 5 minutes to go andunder pressure Anton Ferdinand deflected tohis own goal in injury time to making it 2-2.The neighbours Manchester City alsoencounterd problems at the back as AstonVilla proved difficult to contain beforeBellamy secured the predicted draw 1-1.Villa are showing plenty and have a shot atthe top five or six.

Highlights this week include Aston Villahosting Chelsea then Arsenal hostingBirmingham from 12.40am Sunday SkySport 2. On Monday Sky Sport 2 coveragecommences at 12.55am with Blackburn vBurnley followed by City at Wigan. Tuesday7.55am Sky Sport 2 has Hull at CravenCottage v Fulham.

PREMIER LEAGUE MattersFive goal wins by Liverpool and Tottenhamover Hull and Burnley respectivelyhighlighted last week along with Wigan’sflooring of Chelsea. The upshot has movedboth Liverpool and Manchester United aboveChelsea on the ‘ASAP Ratings’. Liverpoolwho were predicted to win by 4, are on top, despite being 3rd on the table.

Wigan had already competed well and were1-1 when Petr Cech was sent leavingChelsea with 10 men for most of the 2ndhalf. They scored the penalty and again lateto deliver coach Ancelotti his first loss. Overat Ewood Park, Blackburn showed how itsdone with 10 men, a late penalty giving thema 2-1 and ending Aston Villa’s 4 win streak.

Portsmouth’s losing streak went to 7courtesy of Everton’s Louis Saha who hadthreatened all day. Portsmouth competed butthis was tough on the home crowd.Liverpool fans on the other hand are feelingsomething. The 6-1 drubbing of Hull, whichincluded 3 by Torres, sent the winner to thetop of the ‘ASAP Ratings’ and the loser tothe bottom.

Tottenham, although 6th by the ‘ASAPRatings’ moved into the top 4 on the tableafter slamming Burnley 5-0 at home, RobbieKeane nailing 4. Despite the ongoing injuryissues of Rio Ferdinand, Manchester Unitedshowed their great depth by making 11changes for the second time in a week. These included rolling Ryan Giggs off thebench to secure a win over Stoke away. The2-0 makes them this week’s dinner host.

Sunderland backed up their big win overHull with another, 5-2 over Wolves at home.At Craven Cottage Fulham producedchances all match but were denied by keeperMannone and a quality Van Persie strike togo down 0-1 to Arsenal. PREMIER LEAGUE MattersThe Man City v Man United derby deliveredeverything last week. United led throughout, but City stayed with them thanks to the MUrear guard. When City striker Bellamygrabbed his 2nd on full time it was 3-3,before Michael Owen, free of bench splinters, got one home in the 6th minute of injury timefor 4-3.

Bolton copped plenty of flack from theirfollowers as the struggled to stay with Stokeat home. They got out with a late draw.Stoke are rating quite well having beatenSunderland and only going down by 1 toChelsea in their last two.

Birmingham got one away for a changealbeit against Hull 1-0. The latter are bottomranked by the ‘ASAP Ratings’, whileBirmingham are midfield. At turf MoorBurnley surprised with a margin of 2,defeating Sunderland 3-1, with striker DavidNugent ending his drought getting two.Among other lower ranked teams, Wolvesdowned Fulham 2-1 to get up to 12th on thetable although the ‘Ratings’ suggest 16th or17th might be nearer their mark.

Liverpool are now on a 3 streak, and 4 from6 for the season after downing a doggedWest Ham away at Upton Park. Torres didthe damage with two and they rank 3rd byboth the ‘ratings’ and the table. West Hamannounced the signing of Mexican strikerGuillermo Franco during the week.

And another of the ‘top five’, Arsenal, cruised home 4-0 against Wigan who arerating like relegation candidates even thoughthey’re 15th on the table. Defender ThomasVermaelen managed two for Arsenal.

Portsmouth away couldn’t take a trick verseAston Villa going down 2-0. They’re now 6from 6 on the loss count. Although at hometo Everton this week, that too is lookingominous as the latter finds some form. Theirsuper striker Louis Saha bagged 2 to givethem their 2nd win, this time at home overBlackburn 3-1. Everton is reported to bechasing Socceroo Lucas Neill.

Michael Owen repaid some debt as the heronailing an injury time goal to get ManchesterUnited up 4-3 over Manchester City. It willgo down as another of the great clashesdelivering some spectacular football, andCity, with the luck, showing again they’rehere to play this season. Meanwhile, Citystriker Adebayor copped 3 matches for theVan Persie stomping the previous week.

Its early days but new Chelsea coach CarloAncelotti couldn’t have hoped for a betterstart. They’re now 6 from 6 as Cole, Drogba, and Ballack all found the net in acommanding 3-0 over Tottenham atStamford Bridge.

Race Comment: Sophistication shorts but hard not to be impressed with him at Warwick Farm 2nd up for Pride. Looking back through his wet form his failures have been

when he had been failing on the dry as well. He does have won good wet track back when he was racing well a few years ago. For Cruyff’s Sake likes the wet & has a

chance at odds.
