Sports Event Spotlight
2
Throughout the course of the year Sport MR will be monitoring the level of interest in key sports events as they happen.
Sports Event Spotlight is a time critical and sensitive measure of how much traction major sports events have in a given week.
The survey was conducted amongst a nationally representative sample of 2,000 adults by our partner, Populus Data Solutions
We are collecting further details on sports and events by different subgroups so if you
are looking for more information please contact Jack Murray or Michael Stone.
Topline findings will be published on

Interest in Gymnastics, though well below the levels recorded during the Olympics, is still high and will be interesting to track in the months ahead with high profile British and international events taking place in the UK. Unlike most sports, gymnastics and, in particular, figure skating have female skews among followers.

Key Findings

5 of the top 6 events this week are football . Having said that interest in England’s qualifier is lower than the average EPL following. The Lithuania match is attracting a higher proportion of ABs than the EPL . Compared with EURO 2016, there are far fewer females tuning in to the World Cup qualifiers.
The Danske Bank Irish Premier League is followed by 11% in Northern Ireland but the Dafabet Welsh Premier League only has 4% following in Wales. SSE Airtricity has a 5% following in Northern Ireland and 1% throughout the UK.
With F1 season just about to start and under new ownership we are seeing a solid level of following at 23%, 1% behind the average for last season Whilst the following for F1 has an older skew (46% over 55) other motorsports such as Speedway are attracting a younger following (18% of followers are 18-24 year olds). F1 has more AB followers than any other motorsport. Both British and World Superbikes seem to appeal most strongly to the 55-65 year old.
Extreme sports has an audience amongst 18-54 year olds but is most popular amongst the 18-24 age group. Given it is a broad church of different sporting activities there is no real traction from any individual event.Motocross has a 20% of followers aged 18-24, and the Crankworx mountain biking has 36% of its following aged 18-24.
