NSWIS AWARDS
WHO: New South Wales Institute of Sport
WHAT: Event Media Management for the annual NSWIS Awards
WHEN: November 2013
WHO HIRED US?The NSWIS or the New South Wales Institute of Sport, the state’s peak sporting body. The NSWIS provides world-class facilities, services and sport programs to elite and emerging athletes across NSW.
Every year NSWIS hold a top class awards night to recognise the achievements of their athletes, coaches and programs throughout that year.
In 2013, for the fourth year in a row, Sports Comm was asked to look after all the media management for the night to ensure the event, the NSWIS and the athletes, coaches and programs received public recognition.
WHAT WAS THE BRIEF?
Our role included pre and post event story pitching to major metro and local/regional media outlets. We were also asked to look after media attending on the night and work with photographers and a freelance TV cameraman to package and distribute news releases on the night.
WHAT WAS THE BRIEF?
Before the awards night we worked with the NSWIS to identify any outstanding human-interest stories from the athletes that had been nominated for awards and pitched these stories to major-metro news outlets.
We also established the geographic region for every single nominee and put together a plan to pitch at least one story to media organisations in every area that had an award nominee.
HOW WE DID IT?
On the night we used a staff of four, along with two Getty photographers also hired by the NSWIS, to conduct interviews for print, TV and online / social media platforms.
HOW WE DID IT?
THE RESULTThe media management plan was executed as proposed with success, including the preparation and distribution of 38 media releases and alerts, distribution of photos and coordination and liaison for media interviews before, during and immediately after the awards.
Known media stories relating to the awards included athlete interviews on Ch7’s The Clubhouse, post-event news packages on national programs including Sky News, radio interviews on Sydney stations Sky Sports Radio, 2GB and 2UE. There was also a regional TV story in Newcastle.
THE RESULTThere were print and online stories in The Sunday Telegraph, The Australian and Sydney Morning Herald (twice including a two-page spread*) and in regional and suburban newspapers.
