DETROITSo much for momentum. With their dominant 5-0 win overthe Penguins Saturday night, theRed Wings erased the ugly memoryof consecutive losses in Pittsburgh.

I dont even buy momentum. I tellyou guys that all the time and no onelistens, Detroit coach Mike Babcocksaid. We won a game today and itsa huge win for our team.

The Wings also moved to withinone win of their second consecutiveStanley Cup championship.

Here are four reasons why the RedWings regained control of the finals:

    1. Pavel Datsyuks return: Hes oneof the finalists for the HartTrophy, so it shouldnt be surprisingthat his return ignited the RedWings. But it was surprising howquickly he was able to play effectivehockey after more than two weeksoff. Datsyuk finished with twoassists in 17:38 of ice time. He was

    great tonight, Dan Cleary said.

    Didnt miss a beat.

    2. They left Pittsburgh: The Pen-guins are tough at home, having lost only once in their lastseven games at Mellon Arena. Butthe Penguins struggles during theregular season could catch up withthem now. The Red Wings earnedhome-ice advantage and dont haveto win in Pittsburgh to claim theStanley Cup.

    3. The power play: Detroit had beengetting outplayed on specialteams, but the Red Wings weredominant on the power play in a

crucial Game 5. Detroit scored threepower play goals and Valtteri Filppulascored just seconds after a power playexpired. We were focused through-out, Brian Rafalski said, explainingthe improvement. I thought we shotthe puck more. Obviously, havingPavel back helps, too.

    4. They got some time off: The RedWings were a tired groupduring their Game 4 loss. Babcock

gave his team Friday off and it wasenough to recharge some exhaustedlegs. The final two games will beplayed over the course of six days, which helps Detroit more. The

bottom line is everybody will beready to go next game, Babcocksaid.

Datsyuk looks strong in return, Page 7

Nicklas Lidstrom and Brian Rafalski led a Detroit power-play that produced three goals.

Now, after two days to contemplate what, exactly, went wrongDwight Howards singlefield goal is a good starting pointthe Magic willhit the court at the Staples Center looking to eventhe series. Howard could ditch the blue-and-silversleeve he wore, for starters. Man, I just wear thesleeve because I like how it looks, Howard told theLos Angeles Times. As double up on OrioGwynn scores go-ahead run this timeOAKLANDThe Oakland Athlet-

ics sprayed doubles all over thefield. What a change to have the

offense clicking like this.About time, thats what Imthinking, leadoff man OrlandoCabrera said.

We worked on it in battingpractice, quipped Adam Ken-nedy of the extra-base hits.

Jason Giambi hit a three-rundouble that helped rookie TrevorCahill end a three-start losingstreak, and the As won theirseason-best fifth straight gamewith a 9-4 victory over the Balti-more Orioles on Saturday night.

    Cabrera and Kennedy each

doubled twice and drove in tworuns, including back-to-backdoubles in the As four-run fourthto chase Orioles starter JasonBerken. The first seven hits bythe As were doubles, but theysaw the end to their streak of sixstraight games with a home run.

Cahill (3-5), who had struggledfor run support in recent outings, was staked to a 5-0 lead in thethird inning on Giambis doubleagainst Berken (1-2). Kennedy hita two-out RBI double, then JackCust and Matt Holliday each

drew walks to load the bases forGiambi. You cant walk hitters to get to

a hitter like Jason Giambi,Berken said. Those are thethings that are reallyinexcusable.

Cahill struck out five in sixinnings and didnt walk a batterfor the second time in 12 starts.

SAN DIEGOTony Gwynn Jr. kept gettingon base and kept getting stranded. Finally, he was able to come across with a

big run.Gwynn reached base a career-high fivetimes and scored the go-ahead run in thesix-run sixth inning to help the Sa n DiegoPadres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks6-4 on Saturday night, snapping a four-game losing streak.

The big inning ended a string of 15scoreless innings for the Padres, who lost8-0 to the Diamondbacks on Friday nightand hadnt scored since the eighth inningof a 5-1 loss to Philadelphia on Wednes-day night.

Kevin Correia (2-4) rebounded from ashaky first inning to earn the win, hold-

ing Arizona to two runs and five hits insix innings, with four strikeouts and onewalk. Heath Bell gave up one run on awalk, a wild pitch and two grounders inthe ninth for his 16th save in 17opportunities.

Gwynn was obtained in a trade withMilwaukee on May 21, joining the teamhis Hall of Fame father played with for 20years. Gwynn had a career-high threewalks, a single, double and a stolen base.

Its huge, Gwynn said. Anytime youcontinue to get the leadoff guy on, even ifit doesnt work out the first couple times, you keep turning that lineup over like

that, you give yourself a good opportu-nity to score runs. Obviously youre notgoing to be able to get the hit all the time,

but the guys we have hitting in our RBIspots, theyre not going to miss every sin-gle time. The more opportunities you givethem, the better off its going to be.

Trailing 2-0 after stranding eight run-ners through the first five innings, thePadres finally broke through againstthree pitchers in the sixth. Will Venable

had two hits, an RBI and scored a runthat inning.

Venable hit a leadoff double and scoredon Chris Burkes one-out, broken-bat RBIsingle that bounced off reliever Leo Rosa-

les foot and into left field. After pinch-hitter Edgar Gonzalez flied out, Rosalesmade way for rookie Daniel Schlereth.

Schlereth (0-2) faced four batters andfailed to get an out, allowing four runs onone hit, two walks and a hit batter. Hewalked Gwynn, allowed David EcksteinsRBI single to tie it, walked Adrian Gon-zalez to load the bases and then hit ChaseHeadley on the top of his left foot with apitch to bring in Gwynn with the go-

ahead run.Brian Giles, who stranded seven run-

ners in his first three at-bats, includingfour in scoring position, followed with atwo-run single to right off Clay Zavada,

and Venable had an RBI single.Giles was able to put his shaky startbehind him.

    GAME 5:DETROIT 5 PITTSBURGH 0STANLEY CUP FINALS

Datsyukand the Red Wingsare just fineDETROITPavel Datsyuk took a pass

from Brian Rafalski, calmly navigatedthrough the neutral zone and made theright play with a pass to Dan Cleary.

Not going fast, just executing, MikeBabcock said.

Datsyuks assist on Detroits first goaloffered a clear signal tothe Detroit coach thathis star forward isgoing to be just fine.

And if the 5-0 finalscore of Game 5 is anyindication, so, too, arethe Red Wings.

    On Saturday night,

they got their Hart Tro-phy finalist back on theice. It was the equivalent of the PittsburghPenguins getting Evgeni Malkin backafter a two-week break. So in a tight serieswhere momentum seems to swing in eachperiod, adding a superstar is a hugeadvantage for the defending champs.

Especially when he looks as good asDatsyuk did Saturday night. He had twoassists, was a boost on the power playand, even with a banged-up foot, wasthrowing his body around while playingwith his usual physical edge.

It was his hit on Malkin that started

the whole chain of events that led toClearys goal.He can run over top of you, Babcock

said. We havent been able to get manyon Malkin in the series, so it was good.

Datsyuks return was just in time. ThePenguins stormed back into the serieswith consecutive wins in Pittsburgh andlooked to have an edge over the RedWings when they left Mellon Arena afterGame 4.

But the moment Babcock sent Datsyukout on the wing with new linemates Hen-rik Zetterberg and Cleary, that edge

disappeared. An even matchup tiltedheavily in favor of Detroit.

It was just a matter of Datsyuk proving

he can still be effective. He proved it.

Just having him back, knowing whathe brings, the minutes he can log, hisability with the puck, protecting itheplayed great in every area. He was greattonight, Cleary said. It was amazing tobe able to miss that much time and stepin and be fantastic. What a player.

The Zetterberg line, with Datsyuk asthe newest addition, found the best wayto stop Sidney Crosby: Keep him 175 feetaway from the goal.

When those three were on the iceoften against the Crosby linethey weredominant and spent most of the time intheir offensive zone.

Crosby, who was so good in Game 4,finished Game 5 minus-2. He had oneshot on goal.

They all played well, (Datsyuk) lookedgood out there, made a play on the firstgoal, Crosby said. We just made mis-takes. It doesnt matter who is out there,we made mistakes.

Babcock said if this had been a regular-season game, theres no way Datsyukwould have played. He didnt skate orhave the stability he normally does, Bab-cock explained. But the good news is thathis skating and stability will continue toimprove.

Datsyuk said he was more comfortableas the game went on, and he expects thatcomfort level to grow even more.

Looking back, Detroit did well to keepthe series even while their Evgeni Mal-kin got healthy. Now, they just need onemore win.

We bought time so he can come back,Babcock said. Ideally, he can help us getover the top.

    GAME 5:DETROIT 5 PITTSBURGH 0STANLEY CUP FINALS

Recharged Red Wings dominate Game 5, take series leaDETROITThe Detroit Red Wings

got exactly what they needed: a bigwin and long break. After hearing how tired and beat

up they were through four games ofthe Stanley Cup finals, the defend-ing champions busted out with adevastating display of offense anddefense and rolled to a 5-0 victoryover the Pittsburgh Penguins onSaturday night that put them a winaway from another championship.

The veteran-laden Red Wings leadthe series 3-2 and are closing in ontheir 12th Stanley Cup title and fifthin 12 seasons. Detroit can wrap this

one up Tuesday night in Pittsburgh. Its a huge win, Red Wingscoach Mike Babcock said. The big-gest part is the extra days off. Thatsthe best thing that weve got to thispoint.

Well be a better team.Detroits two-game losing streak

in Pittsburgh quickly became a dis-tant memory as the Red Wingsreturned to the friendly confines ofJoe Louis Arena and blew away thesupposedly fresher Penguins.

The home team is 5-0 in therematch of last years finals, so the

Penguins still have that going forthem. When you dont play well at all,

you have nothing to do but improve, and we have to, Pittsburgh captainSidney Crosby said. The situationis pretty clear for us. We have to gohome and be desperate now.

Pavel Datsyuk made his mark inhis first appearance in eight games, notching two assists, drawing a key

    penalty, and knocking leading

scorer Evgeni Malkin to the ice. TheRed Wings made the Penguins payfor a lack of discipline by going 3 for9 on the power play. Detroit was 1for 10 on the power play coming intoGame 5.

Datsyuk even shook off a slashfrom Max Talbot on his sore rightfoot.

When I play more, Im morecomfortable, said Datsyuk, whologged 17 minutes of ice time. Itsa little bit hard to start with the finalseries when I miss a couple ofgames, but Im ready to play more.

Chris Osgood, on the verge of hisfourth Stanley Cup championshipthird as the Red Wings startinggoaliemade 22 saves for his 15thplayoff shutout, third on the NHLcareer list. He earned an assist onValtteri Filppulas goal for his fifthcareer playoff point, and improvedto 11-4 in the finals.

Detroit held a 29-22 shots advan-tage, the first time the home teamhad the edge.

The other game is three daysaway so I dont know if (the shutout)has much bearing on whats going to

happen in Pittsburgh, Osgood said. Its more important for us to get alittle break so we can be at full capac-ity when we go to Pittsburgh.

This series looked firmly in theRed Wings control after theyopened with a pair of 3-1 victories, but the Penguins seized momentumwith two 4-2 wins that made Detroitappear worn out.

We had no jump in the last game

when they scored all the goals,Babcock said. It didnt look likethey had much jump when wescored all the goals. Its amazinghow tired you look when youre notscoring and they are.

History suggests the Red Wingswill hoist the Cup again as 14 of the19 previous teams to win Game 5 ina series tied 2-2 have prevailed.

Pittsburgh won Game 5 in theMotor City last year in triple

overtime to force the series to sixgames, but then was eliminated athome. The Penguins are 1-5 inDetroit in the past two finals, andCrosby failed to score a goal in allsix games.

Desperation mounts for PensDETROITThe Pittsburgh Pen-

guins lost their momentum, confi-dence and composure, their scoring

touch and their goaltending. Theirstars? They seemed lost, too.Any one of those problems

alone might have cost them Game5 of the Stanley Cup finals againstthe Red Wings, who played withthe desperation and purpose of achampion during a 5-0 victory inGame 5 on Saturday night.

All of them together might wellhave cost the Penguins a seriesthat, only two nights before, looked to be shifting their wayafter their youth and speed helpedthem beat the weary-looking Red

Wings 4-2 for the second succes-sive game.Maybe the Penguins underesti-

mated how good the Red Wingscan be when backed into a cornerduring the playoffs. Maybe theyoverlooked the fact they still haventwon a game yet in Detroit in thesefinals, getting outscored 11-2.Maybe they felt that Evgeni Malkinand Sidney Crosby simply couldntbe slowed after they looked nearlyunstoppable back on home ice.

Or maybe the Penguins simplyarent ready yet to win a champi-

onship, not when the opponent isa victory away from raising theStanley Cup for the fifth time since1997 and the second year in a row.Possibly in Pittsburghs ownbuilding Tuesday in Game 6, justas the Red Wings did a year ago.

The situations pretty clear forus: We have to go home and bedesperate now, Crosby said. Itsnothing new, and we have to

respond right away.Nothing in a Stanley Cup finals

is as f leeting as momentum, as the

Penguins proved not only by fail-ing to win Game 5, but by beingembarrassed in it, taking retalia-tory penalties and losing theirpoise. They had 48 minutes inpenalties, with Craig Adams,Matt Cooke and Max Talbot alldrawing 10-minute misconducts.

Youre going to have emotionsin a situation where youre notgetting a result, the other teamfills the net on you, coach DanBylsma said. I think our guyswere frustrated and then trying toplay physical and started to get off

the page by trying to run aroundand be physical. Its a show ofemotion.

Thats not all. Their specialteams melted down, goalie Marc-Andre Fleury fought anythingshot his way while stopping only21 of 26 shots and Malkin andCrosby disappeared for longstretches. They were held to acombined two shots and neutral-ized by a Red Wings team thatsuddenly doesnt look old or tired,dead-legged or the least bitintimidated.

Even if the Penguins do forcethe first Stanley Cup finals Game7 in their 42-year history, theystill must win in Detroit to winthe series.

We won in Game 5 last year inovertime, and we won a regularseason game here, so I think werepretty confident we can do a jobhere, Crosby said.

GAME 2: ORLANDO AT L.A. LAKERS Tonight 8 ET, ABCNBA FINALS

LOS ANGELESTheres been a widespread consen-sus here at the NBA Finals suggesting that what wesaw out of the Orlando Magic in Game 1 is not quitewhat well see out of the team in Game 2, or beyond.Shooting 29.9 percent, no matter how much creditthe Lakers defense deserves, is not something theMagic figure to do routinely. Playing lax defense

and missing out on loose ballafter loose ball is not somethingwere likely to see again.

I dont think we could haveplayed much worse, said guardCourtney Lee. They obviouslyplayed great on both sides of the ball. But for us, it was like wewere a step slow on everythingwe did. It wasnt really us.

The Lakers are aware of this, and theyre already thinking

ahead to todays Game 2. Any playoff seriescomes down to adjustments, and Magic coachStan Van Gundy has plenty of adjustmentsdrawn up on the board. Heres what the Lakersare anticipating:

Speed up the game. This is a team that worksbest when they work fast, said Lakers assistantcoach Brian Shaw. You can look at the numbers, and they are a very effective team when they arescoring 100-plus points. When you keep themunder that, theyre not nearly as good.

So, we are expecting them to tr y to run more, because a lot of what they do offensively comesfrom their ability to get into the fast break andrun their offense out of that, to get it going beforethe defense has time to set up. They will push thetempo much more.

Get Dwight Howard going. This is actually con-nected to Shaws point about speeding up thegame because the Magic like to establish How-ardwho runs the floor very well for a big manin the low post in their fast-break sets. That willchallenge the Lakers big men to run with him.

I think what theyll do is try to get Dwight intosome situations where he can establish position

by out-running us down the floor, Lakers centerAndrew Bynum said. They didnt do that quiteas much in the first game.

Work for better shots. The Lakers were able tokeep Orlando from beating them at the 3-pointline in the opener because they consistently chal-lenged the Magics shooters. They ran at them tocontest jumpers and forced the perimeter playersto put the ball on the floor rather than getting theopen 3s that have been so effective for them in thisseries. The Magic will have to adjust to the way theLakers are running them off the 3-point line.

We cant let them make 3s, Shaw said. Wedrather have (Hedo) Turkoglu or Rashard (Lewis)put the ball on the floor and tr y to get a shot thatway than have them shoot 3s. But Id expectthem to be looking for that now and to be looking

to make the extra pass to find those 3s.

Tighten up on Kobe Bryants pick-and-rolls. As brilliantas Bryant was in Game 1, his offense came as muchfrom working off pick-and-rolls as from attackingthe basket. The Magics plan to guard Bryant one-on-one with Mickael Pietrus and Lee was foiledbecause Lee and Pietrus were far too easily picked, leaving Bryant for open midrange jumpers.

We need to be more aggressive on him, on theball, to keep him out of the pick to begin with,Lee said. But the man who is helping on thepick-and-roll, who is zoning there, has to be moreactive and be up a little more. He was coming offthe pick, doing one move and getting into hiscomfort zone and pulling up from the free-throwline. We have to get up on him more than that.

    EL SEGUNDO, CALIF.Behind Kobe

Bryants stone-faced mask andthe icy grimace hes wearing inthese finals, his eyes are laserlocked on one target: His fourthNBA title.

His vision is so narrow, so sharpthat he cant think about anythingbut a shiny championship trophynow close enough to touch.

To him, these two weeks are allthat matters.

After that, its anyones guess. As he and the Los Angeles Lak-

I dont know, he said whenasked how much longer hell play.I just love the game so much still.I just feel like theres still so muchout there for me to improve on andwork on. My body feels great. Godwilling, I stay healthy, Ill justkeep going.

Bryant, who will turn 31 in

August, has an upcoming deci-sion to make on his future. Whilehes under contact to make $23million next season, he has anearly termination option, whichhe can exercise if he so choosesthis summer. The idea of a Bryant-less Lakers may be farfetched, butnothing can be assumed.

EL SEGUNDO, CALIF.Hubie Brownfirst tried positioning two record-ers and a knife on the table in frontof him. When that didnt work, hegrabbed a reporters notebook andsketched his idea on paper.

Orlando coach Stan Van Gundyhas his own equipment andundoubtedly spent his Saturdaydoing what Brown was doing: Try-ing to draw up ways to makeDwight Howard more effective.

After a lackluster start to theNBA Finals, the Magic need How-

ard to play betterand maybesmarter and harderwhen theyface the Los Angeles Lakers inGame 2 tonight.

I dont think I was patientenough in the post. I dont thinkthat they caused a lot of problemsfor me. I think it was just rushingand wanting to do so much without being patient, Howard said. Ithink out of all the games Ive hadin the last two playoff series, I wasprobably the most impatient thelast game.

    Howard was limited to six

shotssix Orlando players tookmoremade only one, and scored12 points in the Magics 100-75 loss

    on Thursday.After dominating the Cavaliers

and averaging 25.8 points in theconference finals, Howard foundthings much more difficult againstthe Lakers, whose post players arestronger and much more mobile

than Clevelands.Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Ander-son Varejao played behind How-ard, who bulled his way into goodposition down low and often justhad to spin around and dunk. TheLakers put a defender in front ofHoward, and when he was able tocatch it, they further threw him offhis game by sending double andeven triple teams.

Just by fronting this kid theother night, Howard got absolutelyfrustrated, said Brown, the formercoach turned ESPN commentator.

When your center doesnt get theball, he stops rebounding and stopsblocking shots. You see the kid theother night? He puts his head downand you sulk as a big guy.

Van Gundy refused to single outHoward, saying his entire teamplayed poorly in the opener.

I wasnt happy with anything wedid on the floor, Van Gundy said.I dont think our effort and inten-sity was great. Im not pointing fin-gers at anybody. I think it was all ofus. But to say I was satisfied orhappy, no, not at all. I dont think

Ethiers second homer ends it in 12thLOS ANGELESAndre Ethier

wishes it was last October.Ethier had his second win-

ning hit against the PhiladelphiaPhillies in two days, hitting hissecond homer of the game withtwo out in the 12th inning to givethe Los Angeles Dodgers a 3-2victory Saturday.

Brad Lidge had his secondblown save in less than 24 hours, giving up a tying home run topinch-hitter Rafael Furcal withone out in the ninth. Last post-season, Lidge was perfect inseven save opportunities.

Ethiers performance againstthe Phillies this weekend is insharp contrast to last yearsNLCS, where he had no RBIs in22 at-bats against Philadelphia.

I cant believe ittwo days ina row, said Ethier, who hit agame-ending two-run doubleoff Lidge in the ninth inning ofFriday nights 4-3 win. You cango through half a season, awhole season, without havingthat opportunity, and I had ittwo games in a row.

Ethier sent a full-count offer-ing from Chad Durbin (1-2) overthe center-field fence to completehis fourth career multihomergame. In the fourth, he drove a1-2 pitch into the right-fieldpavilion off Joe Blanton.

I had just let a good pitch go, but I was just staying with theat-bat, staying with the moment, said Ethier, whose home runTuesday night against Arizonasnapped a 24-game drought.

On a 3-2 count, youre just upthere trying to put a good swingon a pitch in the zone.

Cory Wade (1-3) pitched twoperfect innings of relief for theDodgers, whose bullpen leadsthe majors with 17 wins.

Lidge converted all 41 saveopportunities last year in theregular season.
