THE SPORTING REVIEW 2015

The 2015 grouse season saw perhaps the biggest highs and lows of the sporting year. As spring grudgingly gave way to summer concern

over the cold and wet weather saw first a trickle and then a flood of cancellations across the North of England and Scotland. What was apparent was that it was difficult to get a true handle on numbers as late broods rendered counts and even walking days a completely unreliable yardstick. When the dust settled perhaps 8 Scottish moors found that they had record, or close to, numbers of grouse and some remarkable days were enjoyed right up until the end of November. Many of the moors that had actually cancelled large portions

of their program found that they had far more birds on the ground in late September/October than first thought. To grossly generalise the higher moors fared better than most and the Eastern edges of the Cairngorms, Aberdeenshire and a number of the Angus moors fared particularly well. Looking forward the critical point to recognise is that even those moors that cancelled generally did so due to disappointing ratios of young to old rather than a lack of birds on the ground. Consequently this gives real hope that the majority of moors are well placed for 2016 if, of course, we get some decent weather.

The runs of salmon were not spread evenly across the country nor across the season but fishing was, thankfully,

much better than in 2014. Good numbers of quality fish were present from mid-April through May, June and July and in particular on rivers from the Spey North. If you hit it right you really hit it right and tales of 8 April springers in a day to 2 rods, 5 rods off the mark with fish to 18lb by Monday lunchtime in July and most importantly a scattering of first fish all featuring in dispatches. Sadly this upturn in fortunes was not shared by all. Rivers in the North East the Dee, Deveron, Don etc. had a really tough season although their fishers can take heart from the fortunes of the Spey together with the cessation of netting operations. Another point of note and indeed concern was the fact that autumn fish were fairly

Page 7: Sporting Lets CKD Galbraith brochure 2016

FEATURE

conspicuous by their absence for the second year running. That unnecessary phenomenon, the Indian summer, did not help but when there was water the runs did not really materialise. I don’t think it would be an exaggeration to say that the majority of autumn captures were resident fish triggered into making a mistake by falling temperatures or a rise in water levels. The bountiful autumn runs of 2010, 2011 and 2012 are still a fresh memory so we (and salmon fishermen are generally optimistic) hope for great things in 2016.

The open hill is a powerful draw and the ponies, stalkers and landscapes are an evocative image of a Scotland that has changed little in hundreds of years. As the complex range of interests across

Scotland follow their own path anecdotal evidence would suggest that the deer population on the open hill is reducing. When digesting this observation it must also be considered that the deer population on the open hill rose by some 75% between 1960 and 2010 (according to the Scottish Parliament). The consequence, however, is that there are fewer stalking options than in the recent past and a day on the hill will increasingly mean just that and securing a beast will become a triumph that may, on some estates, take 2 or 3 days.

As we go to print in early April there is warmth in the sun, it is high time we were on the riverbank, and we look forward to meeting many friends and clients in the field across the season.

“The open hill is a powerful draw and the ponies, stalkers and landscapes are an evocative image of a Scotland that has changed little in hundreds of years.”

The market for sporting estates experienced a significant improvement in 2015 on the previous year, when the supply of properties available

was depressed by the uncertainty surrounding the Independence Referendum and early concerns about Land Reform issues. With the owners of sporting estates feeling more confident about the prospects of being able to sell, more properties became available, and as a consequence nearly three times the number of rural estates sold in Scotland in 2015 compared to 2014.

The marked increase in activity in the market resulted in some 20 estates totalling about 120,000 acres being sold for an estimated total price of about £65 million. CKD Galbraith, now recognised as leaders in this sector of the market, handled half of these transactions.

Estates are still priced using the sum of the constituent parts, with the sporting component being based on 5 or 10 year average bags to which a multiplier is applied. While these figures may not have

2015 Estates Review

NEWS FROM THE HIGHLANDS

By JOHN BOUND, Partner, head of CKD Galbraith’s Estates Division in the Highlands

increased to any significant amount in recent years, they have generally held up, and although they can vary considerably depending on the area and the quality of the sport, our analysis of the transactions last year suggest the following:

Red stags £35,000 - £40,000Grouse (Driven) £4,000 - £4,500Grouse (Walked-up) £2,000 - £3,500Salmon £4,000 - £7,000

Interest in the estates we sold was generally widespread with viewers coming from all over the world, confirming our long held view that the Scottish estate market is truly global. Estates sold by CKD Galbraith in 2015 include:

BraemoreThe beautiful Braemore Estate, a 10,775 acre, west coast deer forest near Ullapool, offering excellent red deer stalking, walked-up grouse shooting, and a comfortable modern lodge. It was sold privately to a European purchaser.

Loch ChoireLoch Choire Estate in Sutherland, is 32,000 acres of true wilderness with mixed sport. There are two separate stalking beats with an average of 76 stags, double bank salmon fishing on the River Mallart (the major tributary of the renowned River Naver) with an average of 91 salmon, myriad hill lochs with exciting wild brown trout fishing and some enjoyable walked up grouse and ptarmigan shooting. It was sold to an English businessman.

GlenbeichGlenbeich, extending to some 3,800 acres, is a charming all round estate with a good house and pretty garden. It lies on the shores of Loch Earn in west Perthshire and includes some excellent stalking with an average cull of 27 stags. There are 6 cottages and a useful stock farm. Following a brief marketing campaign, the estate was sold in competition to a European buyer in excess of the £4million guide.

to come to Scotland include: the privacy and unspoilt landscape – the geography and geology of Scotland lends itself to houses that are hidden away behind trees on quiet roads, whilst still enjoying views over a wilderness with little or no mark of man; the ability to own vast acres – the average size of estates bought in the last 5 years is around 5,000 acres; the prices – the average sale price of an estate in the last 5 years is £4 million, equal to a two bedroom flat in Mayfair; some of the best sport in the world, including the unique chance of a legendary Macnab.

Our dedicated buying team, Premium Property, was established in January 2016. Through CKD Galbraith’s unrivalled office and staff network across Scotland, we quickly established a portfolio of properties which could potentially be bought. We now deal exclusively in matching buyers with properties that are available either on the open market, privately, or completely off-market but ‘open to offers’.

Given the level of viewing activity to date, we are optimistic about the level of trade in estates for 2016. Typically between 10 – 20 estates change hands each year, but this can dip where there is any kind of market uncertainty; in the wake of the ‘credit crunch’ in 2009, less than 10 sold, and in 2014, the year of the Scottish Referendum , only 7. These times of uncertainty create nervousness in sellers, who worry that the buyers won’t be there if they commit to sell on the open market. If the European Referendum does have an effect, it will be to reduce the number of estates offered on the open market, but it may well increase the number sold privately.

DalmunzieDalmunzie is an all-round Highland Perthshire estate extending to some 6,500 acres. It includes an average annual bag of 35 stags and nearly 200 brace of walked-up grouse. As well as a Dower House, the estate includes six cottages forming the basis of a profitable holiday cottage business. Unusually, the estate also includes its own golf course. It was sold for in excess of the £4 million guide.

As 2016 begins, the clear message to the market is that Scotland is very much open for business. Estates continue to change hands, and continue to be in demand. As a firm we have invested in the future of this market with the establishment of our Premium Property Department.

Projections for 2016Anna Henderson, Premium Property DepartmentWhilst it is generally accepted that all sectors of the property market are nervous when there is uncertainty, there are currently a good number of genuine buyers in the market for Scottish sporting estates from both home and abroad. As we enter the 2016 selling season, the debate over Land reform rumbles on, we have Scottish elections coming up, a vote on membership of the European Union and turmoil in the financial markets. Despite these factors, the clear message from those who are looking to invest, is that the Scottish Sporting Estate offers something which is unique in the world, and given the uncertainty surrounding other global investments, Scottish property is a solid alternative that can also offer immense pleasure and enjoyment.

Other reasons why buyers continue

FEATURE

PP DEPARTMENT Established in January 2016, our Premium Property Department is devoted to sourcing and assisting buyers for top-end properties, principally estates and large country houses. We have combined the expertise of Anna Henderson, a former Director of Rural Property at Savills, with Scott Hall, previously providing bespoke management, marketing and property services for high net worth individuals and blue chip organisations around the world. Both are working closely with our sporting estates agency team and our Sporting Lets Department. Based in Edinburgh, the team operate throughout Scotland. Their focus is 100% on putting buyers and sellers in touch. They are devoted to this task, and are the first team in Scotland to be employed solely on this basis in order to avoid the fault that befalls some combined buying and selling agents, namely their tendency to abandon buyers in favour of earning fees from sales. Our expert knowledge of the market is critical to reassuring our clients that they are not missing an opportunity, nor paying too much when they find something. Likewise sellers are reassured by the genuine nature of the buyers that we introduce.

Aline | ISLES OF HARRIS & LEWIS

ALINE ESTATE IS located on the boundary of Lewis and Harris and covers 8,000 acres of beautiful hill, moor and loch. In addition the Estate also has sporting rights over a further 1,600 acres. The estate is bounded by the wild coastline and the lodge sits at the head of Loch Seaforth and has spectacular views of the Loch, Seaforth Island and also of Clisham, the highest mountain in the Outer Hebrides. Aline is not just an all round sporting estate; it is also a true wilderness where golden eagles, peregrines, merlins, sea eagles, snowy owls, puffins, divers, seals, otters, dolphins and whales all may be spotted, sometimes from the Lodge. The beaches of Lewis and Harris are rightly famous and the estate has sea boats that enable tenants to explore, to picnic on Seaforth Island (part of the estate), and to fish.

AccommodationIn 2009, the 18th century lodge was completely refurbished (as were the boathouse, sauna complex, cottages, and byre), with new bedrooms, bathrooms (4 of them en-suite), kitchen, gunroom, sunroom, study, games room, and dining room. With no road between the lodge and the sea, most rooms enjoy magnificent views down Loch Seaforth to the Isle of Skye. The lodge has 5 double or twin bedrooms and 1 single bedroom and provides comfortable accommodation for 11 (with 4 more bedrooms available in the nearby cottages).

FishingThere are 4 main systems on the estate. Loch Langavat is the headwater of the Grimersta system and provides excellent boat and bank fishing for salmon and trout. The Estate also fishes one bank of the Langadale River at the head of the loch which can be prolific in spate conditions. The Tiorsdam system consists of a small spate river and loch above that enjoys runs of salmon and sea trout from early July. In addition the picturesque Scaladale gets runs of salmon, again from early July, and the rarely fished Vigadale offers the adventurous a rewarding day trip.

salmon and sea trout fishing on a number of River and Loch systems together with spectacular stalking.

AccommodationThe Castle, built in Scottish Baronial style in 1865, lies in a sheltered bay overlooking the Atlantic. The name “Amhuinnsuidhe” is the Gaelic for “sitting by the river”, and salmon and sea trout can be observed jumping in the sea from the castle windows. It provides extremely comfortable accommodation for up to 18 guests in 12 bedrooms, all of which have their own bathroom. In addition, the Castle boasts a drawing room, panelled dining room, billiard room, rod room and well-equipped drying room. Weekly lets are on a full board basis (excluding wines and spirits) with household staff.

Salmon & Sea Trout fishingTenants have the exclusive use of 6 river systems, which include 9 freshwater lochs, the most famous being Voshimid, Scourst and Ulladale. Five ghillies are available. The bulk of the fishing is from boats although tenants may prefer to fish the lochs from the bank. The rivers and burns can be very productive during or just after a spate. All fishing is by fly only, with the wet fly and the dap the most effective. Hebridean salmon typically average from 5-8lbs, with sea trout reaching up to 7lbs. Amhuinnsuidhe is

remarkably consistent with the five year average for Salmon and Grilse standing at 264, and Sea Trout 514.

StalkingThe deer forest is estimated to cover about 35,000 acres and this rugged part of North Harris with its deep Corries makes for exciting stalking. The overhanging cliff known as the “Amphitheatre Buttress” above Glen Ulladale is a particular feature.

Mixed Rod WeeksAmhuinnsuidhe Castle is available on an exclusive weekly basis for the main Sporting weeks, however each year, some sporting weeks are available to individual and smaller groups on a Dinner, Bed & Breakfast basis with a minimum of a 2 night stay. Both driven and walked-up days are available, normally as a pair of days, with accommodation at Bridgend Hotel.

Wild brown trout fishingThe wild brown trout fishing on Islay is renowned worldwide. The Estate has trout lochs of great character: some, including the renowned Loch Gorm, with boats; others are wild and accessible only for the energetic fisher. The rental of Kinlochewe Lodge includes 4 rotating beats on the rivers and 2 boats on the south end of Loch Maree. Salmon may be expected from as early as March. Charles McLaren, author of Sea Trout Fishing, always favoured May as his favourite month on these rivers. The estate provides excellent wild brown trout fishing on Lochs Maree, More, Beg, Loch a’Chroisg and Fannich as well as a number of smaller hill lochs, and 5 miles of the River Braan, a tributary of the River Conon.

Shooting and StalkingFrom the middle of August until early September mixed sporting packages are available with walked-up grouse and

stalking. From September onwards the Lodge is let with stalking and fishing, initially with up to 5 stalking outings per week with more stalking outings per week available in October.

According to the late G. Kenneth Whitehead, Lochrosque, Cabuie and Nest of Fannich have some of the most challenging stalking grounds in Scotland, especially as there are a number of punchbowl-like corries which demand great skill in order to complete a successful stalk. Kinlochewe is an ideal estate to try for a Macnab. On 3rd August, 2012, Angus Yellowlees age 19 caught a salmon in the river on his 3rd cast using a trout rod, never having fished before.

Being only an hour’s drive from Inverness, where there is an international airport, Kinlochewe and Lochrosque are easily accessible from all parts of the UK and are an ideal location for family holidays throughout the year.

SUTHERLAND & CAITHNESS

SUTHERLAND & CAITHNESSCaithness and Sutherland are a bewitching part of Scotland. Caithness is dominated by the flow country. It is land of big, big skies, twittering skylarks, bog myrtle blowing in the wind and views to the Orkneys and a magical, shifting light. Sutherland is larger and the isolated sandstone

peaks of Foinaven, Arkle and Suilven form a dramatic contrast to the more gentle country of Caithness. Both are blessed with superb lodges, fishing of the highest calibre and stalking either for wary flow country stags or across Sutherland’s famous deer forests.

SUTHERLAND & CAITHNESS

River Inver | SUTHERLAND

THE RIVER INVER lies a short distance from the picturesque village of Lochinver in the unspoilt North West of Sutherland, overlooked by Benmore Assynt. The River is approximately 6 miles in length and flows out of the sizeable Loch Assynt at its head. Below Loch Assynt, and really part of the loch, is Loch Garbhe Uidhe and a short distance downstream Loch an lasgaich, both of these lochs being incorporated into the upper beat fishings. In the early part of the century, the exit at Loch Assynt was dammed in order to control the flow of water into the river. The sluices were renovated in 1976, with a fish pass to allow the free ascent of fish.

Since World War II a lot of improvement work has been carried out, particularly to the lower river, and this includes jetties, groynes and walkways. This has created better holding water and made the pools more accessible.

Fishing on the Inver is by fly only; the season runs from 11th February to 15th October, the main fishing months being July to October inclusive.

Upper BeatThis beat starts at the sluice gates at the lower end of Loch Assynt and finishes where the burn from Loch Badnam Aighean enters the river at the west

end of the Battlefield Pool. The beat includes Loch Garbhe Uidhe and Loch an lasgaich, the latter reputedly the best holding pool on the river. In addition to the 2 lochs there are 2 pools on the stretch of river between the 2 lochs. The beat lies alongside the A837 and is easily accessible from the road side. A boat is available on Loch an lasgaich.

River Kirkaig | SUTHERLAND

THE RIVER KIRKAIG lies in the unspoilt North West of Sutherland with a backdrop of the mountains of Suilven Canisp and Ben More Assynt. The river lies in a wonderfully unspoilt gorge with a series of rocky pools and runs. The Falls of Kirkaig, 2 miles upstream from the mouth are an impressive barrier to the further upward migration of salmon and sea trout, and the river below this is divided into 3 beats, each of 2 rods, which are fished on a daily rotation. Each beat has a variety of excellent holding pools, some of which are rocky and only accessible to the most agile. The Kirkaig is very much a spate river, and restricted to fly only with the season running from 11th February – 15th October, the main fishing months being July – October.

Upper BeatThe top of this beat, the Kirkaig Falls is approximately 2 miles walk from the car park at Kirkaig bridge. Access is provided by reasonably maintained footpath. The beat consists of 13 pools and provides exciting and challenging fishing for two fit and agile rods.

Middle Beat The middle beat is only 1 mile from the car park and is much less precipitous than the upper beat. It consists of 10 pools and provides fishing for 2 rods and best fished in medium to high water. It includes the Little Kirkaig, Turn and Hazel Pools which are productive in all heights of water.

Lower BeatThis is the most accessible beat with

many of the pools beside the road. It is a particularly good beat in medium to high water and comprises 7 pools including the Sea Pool, and is fished by 2 rods. This includes the Heather, Bridge and Elder Pools which can all be productive.

In salmon fishing circles, the Scottish “Big Four” namely the Dee, Spey, Tay and Tweed, need no introduction. Scotland, however, also has a host of

smaller and generally wilder “Gems” that can, when conditions are right, give an unforgettable day’s sport. Some rivers hold their waters for a week or more whilst on others the window of opportunity when the waters flow the colour of dark ale, bank high and flecked with foam may last just a couple of hours. That is both the frustration and delight of spate river fishing and the Laxford,

Inver, Kirkaig, Ullapool, Carron, South Esk, Thurso, Brora, Ewe and many more are all, to a lessor or greater degree, dependent on conditions.

Spate rivers are generally short, fast flowing, small and rocky. An uninspiring channel of water sliding past bleached rocks can be transformed by heavy rain into a series of the most wonderful pools, glides and runs. Heaven for the fly fisherman!

Different rivers expect fish to arrive at different times of the year, and whilst you can fish with confidence on the Thurso, Brora and Carron through March and

HIDDEN GEMS OF SCOTLAND

April others require a later start. For some the best of the sport commences with the first run of grilse and summer salmon in July. With water these rivers will fish right through to the season’s end in September/October. Whilst small some monster fish can still be expected. The Brora has a long history of weighty fish and in the last week of the 2015 season one Thurso fisher caught fish of 27lb and 30lb.

As is always the way there are tales of the one that got away. In 2011, Dr John Anthony, a regular on the Kirkaig, was broken by a strong fish when it rapidly

FEATURE

exited the Falls Pool. The following day he found his fish, slain by an otter, with his size 8 Cascade firmly wedged in its scissors. Conservatively, the otter had eaten 5lbs from its shoulder yet the great fish still weighed 35lbs on the hotel scales!

Tackle & Technique for Scottish Spate RiversOne of the keys to fishing these smaller rivers is being highly mobile. A single rod, reel, series of tips, a couple of fly boxes and spools of nylon are all that is required. Waders are not always necessary, but often very useful to cross the river.

In most places, a twelve or thirteen foot double handed rod rated for an 8 or 9 line will cover most situations. Alternatively, a 10 foot single hander rated for a 7 or an 8 will work when the water drops away. It might sound like hearsay, but for most of my spate river fishing, I like to use Double taper lines as distance is rarely a priority and I resort

to short head’s only when stripping sunray shadows or similar.

If circumstances allow, I will always fish 2 flies – tail fly and dropper, and this will enable me to present two different sizes and/or patterns to dibble and to have anxious moments when a fish takes the dropper. For the majority of the year I would be happy if I had one orange shrimp, one dark fly and one long winged pattern in my box as long as they were in a wide range of sizes/weights.

In order to get the best out of a spate river you have to examine every pocket and seam of the river. You must think like a hunter, forget about casting to the far bank, use extreme stealth and different techniques to fish every pot and run. If you simply cast at 45 degrees and let it swing you will miss 80% of the water and will likely leave never to return. These rivers share several traits including beauty, tranquillity and generally value for money. We would urge you to give them a try!

Dounie | SUTHERLAND

THE DOUNIE BEAT is one of Scotland’s best kept secrets offering excellent salmon fishing for either 2 or 4 rods with riverside accommodation available if required. The beat is split into upper and lower sub-beats each fishing 2 rods with parties rotating at lunch. The fishings are predominantly double banked and there are 22 named pools, most of which are easily accessible, which gives fishers the luxury of fishing rested water. Wading, when required, is easy.

The river Carron has a long season with a strong spring run and fish generally arrive in the beat in March with numbers building through April and May. From the end of May through to season end fishing can be excellent with a mix of salmon and grilse running through to August and, with water and a drop in temperature, the September fishing can be prolific.

The open landscape of the upper section contains a number of large

pools interspersed with rapids; in the middle section there is a series of slower pools in deep gorges; in the lower section the river banks open out through fields and woods. This variety gives fishing in all water heights although in common with most highland rivers the Carron does fish best after rain.

Dounie is a very secluded, tranquil and beautiful beat with a profusion of birds and wildflowers and it is a pleasure to spend time on its banks. The resident ghillie will show new anglers the beat, and is available for advice if required.

The Bard CottageThe estate’s Bard Cottage, over-looking the river, is available for visiting fishing parties of up to 4 people, in 2 twin rooms from £390 p/w. It is the perfect base for parties who wish to have the pleasure of being able to walk to the river.

Extending to over a mile of left bank, the beat provides excellent fishing for 2 rods.

There are 12 named pools including Clump and Whirl, which offer a variety of fishing at varying water levels. Access to the water is good with well maintained paths, some staging and platforms to ensure that anglers are able to cover the best lies.

New tenants will be shown the water on arrival at Cornhill and will be provided with a detailed map of the beat which marks clearly the pools, access paths and fishing huts.

ONE OF SUTHERLAND’S best salmon rivers, the Brora has a catchment area covering 165 square miles. The two main tributaries, the upper Brora and Blackwater meet near Balnacoil, and after a short run enter Loch Brora, a sheet of water 4 miles long and a mile wide.

The Lower Brora flows from the loch for about 3 miles through some delightful countryside before falling into the sea. The north and the south bank are operated on a rotational arrangement whereby tenants, although fishing their own bank, never fish opposite each other. There is an ongoing

programme of river improvements to enhance the fishing in all conditions, and a feature of the lower river is that it often fishes best in low water. There are now 29 named pools including the Ford, Rallan, Bengie and Madman.

North Bank access is good, much of it by vehicle, and there is a recently modernised hut in the middle of the beat at the Madman pool.

In addition to providing some wonderful fly water, the Lower Brora enjoys a spring run from early February, excellent summer grilse fishing and a true autumn run in

September and October, with fresh fish being caught up to the last day of the season on 15th October. The best fish in recent years was caught in July – a 30 pounder and in the right conditions sport can be fast and furious.

THE THURSO RIVER enters the Pentland Firth about 20 miles west of John o’ Groats on the North Coast of Scotland. The 5-year average for beats 2-13 now exceeds 1,600 salmon. Whilst favourable weather conditions have played a part in this, we are undoubtedly seeing the results of recent investment by the owners, Thurso River Ltd, who took over the fishing rights in 2006. This has resulted in improved access to the more remote beats and a management regime focused on maximising the smolt numbers returning to sea.

FishingThere are 12 beats varying in length from 1 to 3¼ miles. Anglers rotate beats on a daily basis, working down the river system, fishing both banks. Breast waders are not necessary. The River offers a good variety of fishing with something to suit every taste. Some beats are fast and streamy, others long and deep, and Loch Beg on beat 12 is usually fished from a boat. With the aid of a ghillie and a reasonable wind, fishing the “slack water” can be a very satisfying and fruitful experience. Whilst the season begins on the 11th of January, the fishing really gets into full swing during March. At this time, upper beats tend to be most productive although during the last 3 or 4 seasons the whole river has fished well

from April onwards. The majority of fish taken up until the end of June exceeded 10lbs. Grilse begin to arrive towards the end of June and catches during July, August and September often exceed 400 fish per month.

Salmon ConservationFrom 11th January until 18th June, all salmon and sea trout should be returned safely to the River. From 18th June until 5th October, anglers fishing for a week may retain up to 2 fish, provided they do not exceed 8lbs in weight or 70cm in length. Treble hooks are not to be used at any time during the season and from 1st September until the end of the season (5th October) all hooks must be barbless.

GhilliesThe use of a ghillie is strongly recommended to every fisherman, but particularly those who do not know the river well. The Thurso ghillies are steeped in local knowledge and river lore and

will undoubtedly enhance the whole experience and greatly increase the chances of success.

Transport For those travelling by car, Thurso River is 2 hours north of Inverness. There is an airport at Wick, 20 minutes from the river and a train service linking to Inverness. Guests can be collected from both Wick and Inverness Airports and Thurso train station.

AccommodationThe Ulbster Arms Hotel is ideally situated on the banks of the River Thurso in the village of Halkirk and specialises in catering for anglers. CORROUR IS A 57,000 acre Highland estate and it is a haven for wildlife and tranquillity. The Lodge is located in splendid isolation and is accessed via a 12 mile private road. Uniquely the estate is also serviced by its own railway station on the beautiful West Highland line. There are direct connections to Glasgow and the overnight sleeper train from London.

In 1891 Sir John Stirling Maxwell, a philanthropist from Glasgow, bought Corrour and planted the estates magnificent rhododendron gardens. His love for the outdoors was the start of environmental stewardship at Corrour that continues to this day.

In 2003 the current owners finished the new lodge, designed by Moshe Safdie. It is a rare example of first-class twentieth-century architecture in Scotland. Like Sir John, they run Corrour as a Scottish sporting estate that combines innovative land management with traditional values.

In keeping with this, the lodge and seven holiday houses combine old-fashioned appeal with modern furnishing. They offer seclusion in spectacular surroundings. With silent, peaceful nights, abundant wildlife and remarkable starscapes, Corrour is the ultimate wilderness escape.

Corrour LodgeCorrour Lodge has seven luxurious en-suite bedrooms and suites. In addition there is a children’s bunk room designed by Pinewood Studios in the theme of a pirate ship! The interior of Corrour Lodge is a winning blend of simple Scandinavian luxury, carefully curated classic 20th-century furniture and show-off touches. The lodge features many large glass windows with stunning views down Loch Ossian towards the west. The public rooms provide luxurious comfort and space for relaxation with lots of open log fires to add to the atmosphere. The lodge also boasts a games room and a Scandinavian style sauna built on stilts over the loch and a cedar hot tub on the lodge’s roof.

HospitalityThe hospitality at Corrour Lodge is central to any stay and would rival that of any hotel in Scotland. It is run by David and Lynne Taylor who offer a personal, warm, professional and discreet style. Food and catering is to the highest standard and menus, wines and events can all be tailored in advance.

Their knowledge of stalking is augmented by an acute understanding of local history, ecology and the environment.

Excellent trout fishing is available on the estate lochs. Loch Ossian is also home to some very large pike. Fishing tackle

I have not always had an aspiration to shoot a stag, but over the last few years found myself contemplating this very thought. I have used my husband’s rifle but only for target

practise which I enjoy. Nevertheless I booked a day’s stalking for myself on a traditional Highland estate. This estate uses ponies to extract the stag off the hill and for me this was an important factor for my first stalking experience. I was very nervous but thrilled at the same time; I only had an idea of what the day ahead would hold which I think now I look back was making me anxious about the whole day. It was soon surpassed when I was introduced to the stalkers

and pony men who all made me very welcome.

The day started with a shot at the practise target using the stalkers rifle. Thankfully I hit it and from that point my nerves did slightly reduce and excitement kicked in. We then drove deep into this beautiful unblemished landscape and I quickly realised that this was a day I would appreciate and not forget. The pony man was dropped off to collect the pony and not long after we left the land rover behind crossed over a river and started on our gradual climb towards the hill. As it turned out it was a still, very warm October day which unfortunately meant the midges were out in force.

As the terrain got steeper we would stop and spy on the groups of stags that could be seen and heard on various parts of the open hill. Time was spent critically working out the best path to take for us to get into the best position. We crept up a rocky burn side and for ease I tried to follow the stalker step by step. We had stopped for a welcome drink and two groups of nearby stags were pointed out, however to be in the best position we had to follow the burn back down the hill slightly and back up the next to get closer to the stags without being spotted. One of the groups was now over the other side of a very short, steep mound. I was told to be very quiet, keep my face down and to

stay close in behind. The rifle was taken out of the slip and we made the short, steep climb. I was grasping onto clumps of grass to pull myself up. This was it, my heart was racing. Once over the brow we crawled on our tummies for a short distance to get into the ideal position. I was right beside the stalker and he passed me his rifle. There were a number of stags in the group but they began to run away from us, three of them stopped and the middle stag turned to look back. This was the one; I had the stag in my sights, took a breath in and pulled the trigger. It went down, what a relief, I had made the shot. The stalker said well done and shook my hand.

After a short wait we made our way over to where the stag lay, the stag was gralloched and I was promptly blooded. We eventually sat down and ate our lunch and could see the pony man and his pony make his way up the hill towards us. It was such an amazing view and we could see for miles around and interestingly the estate marches and mountains were all pointed out.

The stag was expertly hoisted and trussed onto the patiently waiting pony and we all made our way back down the hill towards the land rover.

All in all I had a truly amazing day and I will treasure the memories of it and no doubt repeat the experience.

The beat is predominantly single bank but there is a reciprocal arrangement with the far bank to ensure tenants do not have anyone fishing opposite them. Additional fishing, if required, can be sourced from neighbouring estates.

Grouse ShootingAs a result of a new keepering regime, there has been a significant improvement in grouse numbers to enable parties to enjoy walked up shooting in line or organised over pointers with a comfortable

expectation of 30 brace per week. There also may be opportunities for driven days for up to 9 guns in September, with a reasonable expectation of 50+ brace per day.

SCOTTISH GROUSE SHOOTING

The twelfth of August heralds the start of the most exhilarating shooting in the sporting calendar

FEATURE

The Glorious 12th is a date that transcends the sporting world and is one that has worldwide resonance as the start of the red grouse season. Since the

Victorian age the bird has evoked strong passions and it is seen by many to be the pinnacle of game shooting and joyful

indeed is the sport who has days in the diary.

It is not difficult to pinpoint the attraction of a day on the moor. Everything is done on a grand scale. There can be a team of 40 perhaps 50 keepers, beaters, flankers and picker uppers and you are often on top of the

world with views stretching across the Scottish mountains, loch and sea. Then, of course, there are the marvellous birds themselves. The go-bak-go-bak-go-bak call of the red grouse is one of the great sporting noises and there is nothing that can replicate the distant wave of a beaters flag followed by, seemingly seconds later,

GROUSE CHECK LIST

Contract: Ensure that you have a suita-ble contract and that all participants are conversant with the terms.

Weather Insurance: Please, please ensure that your party are covered with appropriate weather insurance. Pro-gressing uncovered is a gamble too far. It generally costs in the region of 5-6% of the cost of the day.

Midge repellent: Midges, to the surprise of some parties, can feature in a day’s grouse shooting. A large cigar will be ef-fective for a full drive but, for non-smok-ers, do remember to pack the repellent.

Safety glasses: This is simply common sense and, in our opinion, should be obligatory.

Mobile phone: Leave it behind!

coveys whistling past. Any day on the hill is a very special

occasion that should be savoured but there is always a story of years of energy, passion, dedication, drive, enthusiasm (not to mention expense) behind every moor and generally a deep love of conservation and field sports in general. These factors have been pivotal in the steady rise in consistency of sport across Scotland and many moors are seeing the benefit of this program of work and investment and we pay great tribute to the passion of the owners who make this sport possible.

When should you go? Walking days start on the 12th and are often the pre-cursor to a larger driven programme and an important “recce” as well as being tremendous sport. In the Outer

Hebrides September and October will see the best of the walking programme. From a driven perspective many of the Scottish moors start slightly later than their English counterparts. For greatest certainty and the biggest bags the last week of August and the first two weeks of September are the prime times. There are numerous options but all have different permutations of bag sizes, accommodation and availability and we would recommend considerable planning in any such venture. The second half of September sees great sport and it is time favoured by many local teams. The birds are in rude good health, the weather can still be kind but bags are gently beginning to reduce in size.

Outwith the Borders and the Angus Glens days in mid to late October are by

no means a certainty but in a good year they can be magical for those teams that are able to take advantage of short notice deals. With frost, a dusting of snow and a steady wind you will truly find out if you can shoot or not. Please register an interest if you are interested in late days. Some years you will find there are no options but on others you might just have a day to remember.

We welcome both UK based teams and overseas visitors from all over the world and have the overall package - accommodation, transport, catering, additional sport is of the utmost importance to the enjoyment of this unique and special sport. We are also able to assist overseas visitors with firearms permits and crucially for peace of mind – shoot insurance.

The Gift of Grouse, a major campaign to highlight the benefits of grouse moors to Scotland, is in its inaugural year and has so far received

wide spread support and approval. The campaign is focused on four key

pillars – tourism and leisure, employment, environment and conservation, and accessibility – to demonstrate the difference that grouse shooting makes to both rural communities and to wider Scotland.

People are at the heart of Gift of Grouse. The campaign is all about explaining how people and communities thrive in some of the more remote parts of Scotland to look after the moorland wildlife and landscape for everyone’s benefit. An integral part of the campaign are the six regional moorland groups from Loch Ness down to the Lammermuirs Moorland Group who promote grouse management in their areas.

EmpolymentThe grouse industry is vitally important to rural Scotland supporting 2,640 full time jobs and providing £30.1 million in wages. TourismFergus Ewing, Minister for Business, Energy and Tourism, said: “The Scottish Government is committed to maximising tourism growth and to supporting field sports. Scotland offers the complete package of sport, a warm welcome, good food & drink and unrivalled landscapes and shooting makes a valuable contribution to the rural economy, including in the winter months.

“I am very pleased to be able to extend support to all of those who make a success of field sports in a professional and responsible fashion. Their efforts bring to Scotland a number of visitors who are very welcome and make a significant financial contribution to the sector.”

Conservation81 and flying – that is the number of bird species thriving on Scotland’s grouse moors.

There is much to celebrate about grouse shooting in Scotland but sometimes the tremendous contribution moorland management makes in terms of environment and conservation is overlooked.

It was therefore particularly gratifying to see the Scottish Parliament recognise what is achieved by gamekeepers and land managers as they do their bit to support and enhance habitat and wildlife species.

Graeme Dey MSP hosted a reception at the Parliament to celebrate species diversity through grouse moor management and an audience of MSPs, industry figures and the media had an

opportunity to hear and see first-hand the conservation work being carried out on a daily basis.

The Gift of Grouse has also highlighted the vital work carried out on grouse moors to help protect the juniper plant which is used to flavour gin and the conservation of heather moorland – essential to the production of heather honey and protecting Scotland’s honeybees. Grouse shooting estates don’t exist solely for leisure purposes, gamekeepers work hard to ensure that everything can flourish on the estates.

Robert Rattray, head of CKD Galbraith’s Sporting Lets, said: “It’s fantastic to have a platform such as the Gift of Grouse from

which to showcase the Scottish shooting industry. Scotland’s grouse moors offer an unrivalled world class sport which draws global visitors, brings additional money to rural communities and supports important species conversation work. The many gifts of grouse should not be overlooked or underestimated!”

AccessibilityRecent years have seen high demand from female shooters and all women shooting clubs which have continued to grow in popularity.

Mhairi Morriss, founder of the ladies shooting club, Glad Rags and Cartridge Bags, said: “The enthusiasm and interest in women’s shooting has been incredible. As a women’s shooting club we are increasingly being approached by ladies of all ages and abilities looking to participate in grouse shoots.

“We’ve created a community in the Scottish sporting scene where women feel accepted and encouraged to join in. The women’s shooting events being organised

all over the country provide an accessible platform for newcomers to the sport or those daunted by the thought of joining a mixed shoot.”

Garry MacLennan, Head Keeper at Invermark Estate, is at the forefront of telling the gamekeeper’s story. He says: “A lot of people simply see the 12th of August as toffs out enjoying themselves. The reality is different. Work is going on all year round on the moors, nurturing habitat and a range of wildlife species as well as supporting local families and communities. This is our world and our livelihoods.”

Be a part of the Gift of GrouseThe Gift of Grouse has experienced much

success so far but there still plenty of activity ahead – and you can play your part!

THE AVON IS the largest tributary of the River Spey and attracts good runs of salmon, grilse and sea trout. Fishing starts in earnest in late April and, in the right conditions, good sport can be enjoyed through to the seasons end on 30th September.

The Ballindalloch fishing comprises over 4 miles of the best water on the Avon. The water runs from Livet Mouth down to Butler’s Pool below the Bridge of Avon. The fishings, known as the ‘the lower beats’, are split into 6 beats, each fished by 2 rods, on a daily rota system. There are over 30 named pools on these beats which may be fished twice during a week’s stay at Ballindalloch. Good access to the river has been provided for vehicles and most beats have small fishing huts. From Livet Mouth upstream to the march with the Crown Estate fishing is from the left bank only. This stretch of water is known as Beat A and is let separately.

Fishing is let by the week but day permits may be issued if there are any rods available.

AccommodationCottage accommodation is available on the Estate. Please contact us for further information. Alternatively for those not wishing to self-cater the Delnashaugh Hotel is on the estate and conveniently situated near the river at the Bridge of Avon. It has 8 twin bedded rooms with en-suite facilities and 1 double room with an adjoining private bathroom.

Lettings are Sunday to Sunday www.ballindallochcastle.co.uk

LOWER DESS IS one of the jewels of the river Dee. The beat fishes from the first day of the season to the last and over the years has proved to be remarkably consistent with an increasing and often neglected sea trout run during the summer months. There are 18 named pools at Dess, fished by a maximum of 5 rods, and fishing in all but the highest floods. A splendid fishing hut offers respite from the cold in the spring and shade from the summer sun. Fishing can be booked by the day or week with or without accommodation.

For the utmost in luxury, parties can stay at the Mill of Dess Lodge. Recently completed, this Lodge has 10 en-suite bedrooms and is let on a fully staffed, fully catered basis. This really is the ultimate way to experience the Dess fishings and

GORDON CASTLE IS located on the lower River Spey and was historically the principal seat of the Dukes of Richmond and Gordon and dates back to the 1400s. This was one of the largest houses ever built in Scotland. Today, only one wing remains (east) and it has been converted into a comfortable country house in its own right. The Castle is situated in secluded grounds but just 50 miles from Aberdeen and Inverness airports.

AccommodationGordon Castle has 8 beautiful double or twin bedrooms, together with 2 further single bedrooms. Each has its own well appointed bathroom finished to the highest standard. All the bedrooms have been individually decorated to create an elegant, warm and extremely comfortable stay. The beds are huge, the linen crisp and the towels large white and fluffy! The personal touches ensure that all who stay feel that they have experienced a truly memorable and special time. Guests will feel spoilt, comfortable and cosy as well as grand. The Castle has numerous living rooms on both floors for guests to spread out, including drawing room, study, billiard room and 2 large entertaining rooms. Satellite television is available in 3 of the living rooms and a computer with broadband internet is in the study. There is a lift for those unable to use the stairs. The gardens are large and private and include a tennis court. The Castle is fully staffed, providing friendly service and delicious food. Other smaller, self catering properties on the estate are also available.

FishingThe River Spey is one of the “big four” Scottish salmon rivers and the Gordon Castle beats are amongst the most famous in the world. Spread over 8 miles, its 8 beats of double bank salmon fishing are together probably the largest prolific salmon fishery in Britain. Each beat has its own ghillie and is fished by between 3 and 6 rods, with most beats being for 6 rods. Fishing is with fly only, and a largely catch and release policy for salmon and sea trout is in force. The Estate has a variety of fishing

SITUATED ON THE edge of the Grampian Mountains in one of the Angus Glens, Glenogil is a renowned Sporting Estate with ground rising from around 600 ft to over 2,300 ft. The continuing programme of investment and careful management ensures Glenogil continues to offer some of the best grouse, pheasant and partridge shooting in the country. It is highly accessible within Scotland.

Grouse ShootingThe grouse moor extends over 20,000 acres and comprises the Glenogil, Glen Moy, Glenqueich, Fern and Nathro beats. Following successful seasons from 2008 to 2011 and in line with several other moors in Angus, 2012 was a poor season for a variety of reasons so little shooting took place to preserve stocks for 2013 which was vindicated with another successful season. 2014 saw a number of very happy clients shoot good bags with last season, as on many moors, showing low numbers due to a poor spring for broods.

2016 will see further exciting developments at Bruar including at Easter the opening of an expanded Living Department and cook shop, in July the opening of a new, 4,000 sq ft ladies coat, luxury suede, sheepskin and leather department showcasing the finest attire in the land, and also in July the launch of a new “drinks cellar” promoting the very best of British drinks.

Old favourites including, of course, the menswear hall, the existing ladieswear department that has a well-deserved reputation for elegant luxury, the fishing shop, art gallery and restaurant all continue to make House of Bruar both the perfect pit stop but also a destination

in its own right. In addition to expansion on the ground Bruar also continues to innovate in terms of the service it delivers. Why not pre-order food and beverages when heading north to remove the stress and hassle of the weekly shop? Alternatively Bruar is launching a wedding list service offering tailored, sophisticated choices that simply cannot be found at any outfitter.

Many ranges can also be found in the latest mail order catalogue, available on request, or by visiting the website www.houseofbruar.com

CKD Galbraith continues to enjoy a close relationship with The House of Bruar. The building of long term relationships with both customers and suppliers is an ethos central to both businesses.

Through our association with International Sporting Agents, Davis & Bowring, and now with over 20 years of experience of hosting

shooting parties in Spain, we are delighted to be able to offer access to the exclusive shooting at La Cuesta in the rural heartland La Mancha, which is widely recognised as offering the very best partridge shooting in Spain.

Shooting days take place over a massive area of mountainous country in the Province of Castilla La Mancha, with the core of the high bird shooting taking place in the wild ravine country of La Cuesta. This estate is particularly renowned for its high partridges, although there is such a variety of drives that we can tailor the shoot programme to suit any preference.

In an average year, over 100 shooting days take place at La Cuesta with daily bags of minimum 600 or more birds over the season which runs from 1st October to the end of February.

La Cuesta can cater for a wide range of requirements – from full accompanied shooting teams of 9 guns and partners, to single guns joining a mixed group. The great feature of shooting in Spain is that you have both a loader and a secretario, the latter’s duties include keeping an accurate count of the birds that you individually shoot. You pay only for the birds that you yourself wish to shoot. You do not pay for other gun’s birds. In this way you can relax and enjoy shooting only the birds you choose to shoot.

We arrange all the necessary Spanish local hunting permits and all the details from the moment you arrive in Spain, including assisting you in bringing your guns through the Airport. Each gun must provide a copy of their passport and have a valid European Firearms Pass(EFP) at the time of travel. One of our English

speaking representatives (and usually one of us) will meet you at the Airport and host you throughout your stay.

All transport, accommodation, meals, drinks and cartridges are included in the price, the only addition being tips and personal purchases.

Accommodation is available in the newly refurbished shooting lodge FINCA La CUESTA de la BORRACHA

has been built on a prominent hill and has outstanding views south to the Sierra Alcaraz and south west to the Sierra Morena. Newly constructed in October 1999, and refurbished and further modernised in 2013, the house now boasts 16 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. It provides exceptionally comfortable accommodation for guns and their guests, and is offered on a fully staffed and catered basis, including all drinks.

The Finca has full time staff to cater for your every need, and if non-shooters prefer to stay behind and join the party at lunchtime, this can be easily arranged. After shooting, guns and boots are cleaned for you and there is a very efficient laundry service. Each room has a telephone and full WiFi facilities throughout the lodge. Additionally a therapeutic massage is available with a dedicated in-house professional to soothe aching limbs after an energetic day’s shooting.

“Thank you for a fantastic trip. It will live long in the memory as one of my best trips and days shooting.”

Communication & TravelTravelling to Spain and onward to La Mancha couldn’t be simpler. Guests can fly to Madrid (Barajas) where you will be met by the estate’s representative who will assist with the process of gun importation (which is very straightforward). Transfer is either by luxury coach or car, and available to collect you from the airport or your hotel in Madrid. The driving time to La Cuesta is approximately two and a half hours and can be interspersed with lunch en route if you wish, and we can recommend a number of excellent restaurants to break the journey, typically Casa Pablo in the Royal city of Aranjuez.

Alternatively, guests can fly privately to Albacete which is about 1¼ -1½ hour’s drive from La Cuesta.

Many teams who have shot with us return year after year, and believe it to be the best shooting experience they have ever had; one of the best endorsements we can ask for.

Business rates are an overhead endured by the vast majority of businesses whose activities require them to occupy land or property. There are

some exemptions to this, in particular, agriculture and forestry which were given special dispensation as they were considered to be of wider national interest. At the time of publication (April 2016), the Scottish Government has proposed that shootings and deer forests, currently exempt, should be liable for business rates.

This is a reintroduction rather than a new idea as prior to 1995 shootings and deer forests were subject to business rates. In 1995 they were removed from the valuation roll and professionals who were involved in the sector at the time recall that the reasons were largely pragmatic. There were large numbers of subjects to value and in many cases their individual worth was very small. Consequently the cost of maintaining the Roll and collecting the tax was uneconomic.

In the event that the Government’s intentions to reintroduce sporting rates comes into law before the Government elections in May, the Assessor will be required to identify and value all land within Scotland over which there is a right (or potential right) to shoot and/

or stalk. The revaluation is scheduled to come into effect on 1st April 2017, and accordingly the Assessor, has a momentous task ahead. The President of the Scottish Assessors Association suggests it could involve the valuation of up to 55,000 additional businesses. Unlike commercial premises there is no ready yardstick available to the assessor as 20 years have elapsed since they were last assessed, which makes the task even more difficult.

The basis of this valuation will be the same as that pertaining to all other

properties in the Valuation Roll i.e. the hypothetical rent which would be struck between a willing landlord and a willing tenant on the assumption that the tenant bears all the normal costs of occupation. It will consequently be very interesting to scrutinise the numbers if and when they are put forward. Sporting enterprises are often driven by the passion of the owner. In the majority of cases they are not profit making and the sums of money involved in sporting leases are often very small. It is likely that the vast majority of entries will be relatively modest and as such they may be entitled to reliefs such as the Small Business Bonus Scheme should such persist after the forthcoming election.

Until the numbers become clear it is difficult to predict what, if any, effect the

proposed reintroduction of sporting rates will have on Scottish sport. What is clear is that it will be an additional tax on an already fragile industry, which will have to be shouldered largely by the bigger sporting enterprises. Whether there will be any change in the way in which sport is carried out will only be fully understood over the coming months and years.

In January 2014 the then First Minister, Alex Salmond, announced a review into Scotland’s wild fisheries with the principle aims being to:

• Develop and promote a modern, evidence-based management system for wild fisheries fit for purpose in the 21stcentury, and capable of responding to the changing environment

• To manage, conserve and develop our wild fisheries to maximise the sustainable benefit of Scotland’s wild fish resources to the country as a whole and particularly to rural areas

At the time of writing, April 2016, the sometimes tortuous process is now entering its final stages and we have a fair idea of the new order on our rivers although the future ramifications will only become clear through the passage of time. For the majority of fishers in 2016 there will not be enormous immediate change. Our rivers have been provisionally categorised as either 1, 2 or 3. Very simply put category 1 rivers will see little change, 2 will have to reduce exploitation and 3 are deemed to be below their conservation limits and will be subject to compulsory catch and release.

It is entirely correct that vulnerable fish stocks are not exploited and we will be delighted if the categorisations result in an increase in the number of fish running our rivers. I think it is right to highlight the fact that fishermen have dramatically altered their habits over the last 20 years and the majority of rivers already had conservation guidelines in place and fishers routinely return the vast majority of the fish that they catch. The majority of existing catch and release policies actually fall within the parameters of what is proposed. There are exceptions who, rightly in some cases, feel very bruised and have concerns about the future of lettings and angling clubs. As a result the methodology behind these categorisations has come under scrutiny and it is hoped that it will quickly evolve to a point where all understand and agree with the designations.

Amongst other things there is a clear geographic split between the East and the West. The West is predominantly Cat 3 whilst the North and East are largely Cat 1 and 2. This does raise the question, again, as to why the aquaculture industry was specifically excluded from the Wild Fisheries Review? The answer given in the face of persistent questioning was ‘mission creep’ but I do not think it possible for the second of the stated aims to be met on the West Coast without work in this direction. The personal words of John Fredriksen in 2007, then the largest

SALMON & WILD FISHERIES

REFORMshareholder in Marine Harvest, tell their own story. “I am concerned about the future for wild salmon. Fish farming should not be allowed in fjords with salmon rivers. The fish farming industry should be allowed to operate in fjords but not where wild salmon are present in local rivers.”

Another point of note is that mixed stock netting is to be discontinued for a period of 3 years and this will most likely be of enormous benefit to certain rivers. Whether there is any real appetite to bring commercial netting to a permanent end remains to be seen and in-river netting rights will have to be closely monitored. Sea trout are surprisingly excluded from this moratorium and we think that this is an enormous shame. According to Marine Scotland’s status of Salmon and Sea Trout Stocks 2014 report ‘Rod catches indicate that the number of sea trout returning to Scottish rivers has probably been in decline for much of the period 1952-2014. While catches of sea trout in many areas of Scotland are at historically low levels, there have also been notable declines in the last 20 years in central-eastern, south west and north west areas of the country.’ Reading the second of the stated goals and the status report it does seem very strange that they are excluded.

Outwith British commercial nets, rod

and line exploitation and aquaculture the salmon’s extraordinary lifecycle, taking in as it does mountain stream and Arctic Ocean, is subject to myriad pressures and challenges. Whilst domestic politicians legislating for control of exploiting spawning stocks in the rivers is part of that, the wider environmental challenges will only be overcome through international co-operation and behavioural change.

Over and above the river bank changes there are, of course significant changes afoot to the administration and structure of the way things ‘work’. There is currently ongoing consultation in the relationship between the Scottish Ministers and local management, the regulatory framework in terms of methods, conservation measures, rod licencing, enforcement etc. These consultations are wide reaching and whilst, at this stage, it is very important to look forward and not back one of the goals of the reform process must have been to improve on what was in place before the commencement of the review. Will this prove to be the case? Will money simply disappear into administration and bureaucracy? Will practical common sense be replaced by rafts of statistics? We wait and see and would strongly urge all fishers to stay engaged in the process.

Alex Salmond announcing review.

COMPETITIONof the judges from Sporting Lets and Swarovski. Cameron describes the moment below.

‘I took the photograph in October 2013 when I was fishing the Ashiestiel Beat, of the famous Scottish River Tweed. The fish was a 12lb hen fish that I caught on a blue and silver fly that I tied myself and have subsequently called the ‘Stiel Blue’. As you can see from the photograph, I returned the fish and as it was recovering, within a ridge of the riverbed, the sun dropped in the sky and provided the perfect backdrop. The photograph was taken on my trusty pocket camera, nothing fancy. ‘
