Creating Placesfor People.BDP designs and creates inspiring places for people. With international teams

of architects, engineers, designers, and urbanists, we work from studios

throughout the UK, and in Ireland, the Netherlands, the UAE, India, and China,

    on projects around the world.

Founded in 1961, BDP is now t he largest interdisciplinary design-led firm in

Europe and has won over 750 awards for design quality from international

    and national bodies.

Our designers focus on designing buildings and environments for the future

to confront the reality of a finite planet. We challenge ourselves to create

better environments for everybody using five goals as our starting point for

    the design process:

to act as climate shapers to create protective and positive environments for

    people to enjoy

to take a creative approach to energy, with natural and technological

methods for the use and reuse of energy and resources

to design in a user-inclusive style, engaging in a learning centred approach

with the occupiers of our buildings and places

to cross-fertilise our knowledge from different cultures, maximising the

advantages of being international, interdisciplinary and multi-sector

to promote and create liberating buildings, places and communities for

people to use and adapt over time.

    From high profile masterplan-led sports

placemaking projects such as our work

for the All England Lawn Tennis Club

at Wimbledon (AELTC), home to the

    Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships,

    and our masterplan and redevelopment

of Aintree Racecourse, home to the

    internationally renowned Grand National

steeplechase, through to the design of

    competition venues, hospitality buildings

and community sports facilities, BDP has

experience across the full spectrum of

    sports related projects.

All these projects deliver technical and

    functional excellence but over and

above that, foster a sense of theatre

and occasion that only the best venues

achieve, enhancing the drama of the

    collective sporting experience.

    Aintree Racecourse, Liverpool, UK

Our masterplan for Aintree Racecourse is

designed to enhance the drama of t he race day

experience and the spectacle of the event. The

pre-parade, parade ring and weighing room

provide functional space for owners, trainers,

jockeys, officials and horses, while improving

spectator capacity and viewing for pre-race

activities. Two new paired grandstands provide

superb views over the racecourse, as well as

hospitality facilities for race day and non-race

day use. A new horsewalk takes riders out from

the parade ring under the saddle bar spanning

between the stands to the racecourse, as well

as providing a spectacular processional return

    for the winning horses.

Our masterplan for AELTC has transformed

Wimbledon into the world class place it is

today. Our masterplan reoriented the main

public areas creating space for the new

No 1 Court and other buildings as well as

    providing a substantial service undercroft.

It also created space for Henman Hill (now

Murray Mound), a BDP invention. 1514

As well as developing the masterplan

BDP designed and delivered the new

    No 1 Court complex, including a 15,000

    seat arena, hospitality and spectator

areas, the high tech Broadcast Centre,

and the mixed use Millennium Building

    for players, officials and members.

All these interventions were designed to

enhance the sense of place and extend

and develop the experience of watching

Tennis in an English Garden, which gives

    Wimbledon its unique character.

BDP has great experience in the design of

    buildings for culture.

Over the past decades we have worked

for many of the UKs most revered

    cultural institutions including the Royal

Opera House, the Royal Ballet Company,

Royal Albert Hall and National Maritime

Museum. We have also designed highly

    successful concert halls, theatres and

    museums including Kelvingrove Art

Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, the

UKs most visited museum outsideLondon. Many of these projects involve

    the retention and refurbishment of

    existing much loved buildings, preserving

    and enhancing their character whilst

    discreetly adapting them both functionally

and technically, to make them truly fit for

    purpose in the 21st century.

    Royal Opera House,

    London, UK

The Royal Opera House project preserved

the world renowned 140 year old theatre

    whilst redeveloping its backstage facilities

enabling it to continue as the home of the

Royal Opera and Royal Ballet companies.

The old foyers and auditorium were

refurbished, and the stage and flytower

rebuilt and enlarged to improve sightlines

    and simplify scenery handling. New

    dressing rooms and rehearsal facilities

were also constructed for the Royal

Opera and Royal Ballet, together with new

workshops and offices to consolidate the

    theatres operations on one site.

Public foyer spaces were also extended,

including the reconstruction of the old

Floral Hall as the principal foyer. In

    addition a second smaller auditorium

and the new ballet studios afford greater

opportunity for both companies to present

    smaller scale and experimental works.

    Royal Albert Hall, London, UK

BDP were commissioned to develop a

    masterplan for the first comprehensive

refurbishment of the Grade I listed Royal

Albert Hall since its construction after the

    Great Exhibition of 1851.

    The refurbishment has improved

conditions for the audience, both within

the auditorium itself and throughout the

foyers with re-set seating tiers, a new

    ventilation system, re-cast acoustics and

    new hospitality and bar areas.

    Accommodation has been upgraded

backstage for artists and staff, making it

easier to put on a wider variety of shows

and other events in the hall. In addition

new service areas have been created at

basement level to give direct access from

the outside to the stage, kitchens and

    plant rooms.

Throughout this vast programme of works

stretching over a decade, the Royal Albert

Hall remained open to the public, hosting

    over 300 events a year.

    Leeds Grand Theatre, Leeds, UK

The Grand Theatre in Leeds was a major

    milestone in Victorian theatre building

and is Grade II l isted. Once described

as probably the finest theatre of its

size in Britain the Grands 19th century

facilities no longer met present day

    audience expectations and had become

    increasingly inefficient.

The works on the theatre involved new

    seating, improved sightlines, better

ventilation and enhanced facilities for the

disabled. Backstage, the fly tower and

flying systems were upgraded, with better

    storage capacity, dressing rooms and

    backstage areas. Three new rehearsal

rooms, separated by a street, connect

to the theatre by a bridge which also acts

as a scenery store with a new s pecialist

    lift adjacent.

The project also included the conversion

of the nearby Assembly Room which has

been restored to provide a new 400 seat

    venue for music making, showcasing

    new talent, orchestral rehearsals and

    educational projects.

    Lewisham, London, UK

    Cornmill Gardens was

    the first project to be

    implemented as part of

    the Urban Renaissance in

    Lewisham programme.

    BDPs design evolved from a

    series of individual meetings

    and public consultations with

    the client, stakeholders and

    the local population. The aim

    was to achieve solutions for

    the themes that emerged

    from these meetings, while

    taking into account the

    environmental and technical

    considerations required for

    such a town centre site.

    Fouka Bay, Egypt

Fouka Bay is situated in an unspoilt

    sparsely populated region characterised

by rocky coastline, white sandy beaches

and shallow blue water, 210 km west of

    Alexandria. This new resort masterplan

    comprises three main parts.

In the Village, villas and apartments

    clustered around private gardens and

pools form a sweeping boulevard, leadingfrom the reception area down to t he

sea, where a boutique hotel luxuriates in

    uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean.

In the Retreat, a discrete development

of chalets and villas set into a secluded

    and luxuriant landscape, provides levels

of privacy and calm that are not available

    in any other resort.

The bustle of a market marks the

heart of the Downtown area, which

    extends along intimate streets and

    through squares framed with shops

    and restaurants to a marina.

    Waterfront City, Melbourne, Australia

BDP was commissioned to develop the masterplan for the

expansion of the Melbourne Docklands, consisting of 19 hectaresof brownfield land situated at the western edge of the major

regeneration area. The site, like most of the surrounding area,

was used for warehousing and other functions relating to the

areas role as a major shipping destination.

The phased development comprises the waterfront piazza,

marina, retail and commercial suites in Phase 1A and a major

retail component known as the Harbour Town shopping centre

in Phase 1B. The residential element of the development was

completed in time for t he 2006 Commonwealth Games.

The latter phases have taken on board key components of the

masterplan, particularly the Ferris wheel, which serves as both a

destination marker and a major tourist attraction.
