Australia and Vietnam have had a deep and ongoing diplomatic, economic and trade relationship for many decades. According to the Australian government: Vietnam was Australia's fastest growing export market in ASEAN during the 10-year period 2003-2013 (average annual growth of 16.3 per cent) and this trend continues. Vietnam has been cited as having the fastest growing middle class in the Southeast Asian region and this is expected to rise from 12 million in 2012 to 33 million in 2020 (Boston Consulting Group Survey 2012). Australian investment in Vietnam was valued at almost $1.2 billion in 2014, $1.1 billion being considered foreign direct investment. In the 2011 Census, 221,114 people in Australia claimed Vietnamese ancestry. Today Australians born in Vietnam represent the fifth largest migrant community in Australia*. Currently, Vietnamese international students represent the third largest source of international students to Australia**.

There is no doubt as to the increasing mobility of Australians and Vietnamese, as well as the strengthening of the bilateral relationship from trade, economics, culture, education and people to people links. Accelerating the prosperity of both nations within a globalised world requires leaders who are innovative, empathetic and international. The founders of the inaugural Australia-Vietnam Young Leadership Dialogue believe that it is important to build upon the organic links between our respective nations - specifically with young leaders. Background

About Us

The Australia-Vietnam Young Leadership Dialogue (AVYLD) is an independent, non-for-profit initiative that promotes engagement and collaboration between Australian and Vietnamese leaders from businesses, startups, academia, government, non-for-profit and the arts.

Our mission is to facilitate a deeper understanding and collaboration between Australian and Vietnamese leaders to improve economic, social and cultural prosperity for Australian and Vietnamese citizens, contributing to the development of a stronger and better future.

AVYLD is a charity, incorporated as a public company limited by guarantee in February 2016.

Objectives

1. Facilitate a better understanding of Vietnamese and Australian society and foster long-term, mutually beneficial relationships by connecting and engaging Australian and Vietnamese citizens from different industries and sectors to collaborate together.

2. Develop global leaders from Australia and Vietnam to shape regional and industry agendas by working closely with other stakeholders to define social and business challenges, solutions and actions in the spirit of global citizenship.

3. Create and nurture a sustained community through an integrated concept consisting of dialogues, a strong fellowship network, working groups led by AVYLD ambassadors, engaging events and digital collaboration.

4. Facilitate research and promote policies that will support Australia and Vietnam to improve societal outcomes.

Advisory BoardGraham Alliband - Program Director - Vietnam-Australia Human Resource Development Partnership (Vietnam)Graham Alliband is currently Program Director of the Vietnam-Australia Human Resource Development Partnership funded by the Australian Government. He has previously headed three Australian Government-funded projects in Vietnam: the Australia Awards Vietnam Program (2009-2016), the Capacity Building for Effective Governance Facility (2002-2006), and the Vietnam-Australia English Language, Technical Training and Resources Project (1997-2002). As an Australian diplomat he has had three postings to Vietnam ending up as Australian Ambassador to Vietnam from 1988 to 1991.

Chris Butler - Former Partner - Ernst and Young (Australia)Chris is a recently retired partner of EY. Prior to retiring he was the Managing Partner in HCMC, Vietnam and the Tax leader for Indochina. Chris has served on a number of boards in the not-for-profit sector including as Chairman of the Australian American Leadership Dialogue. Chris also served on the board of Genazzano FCJ College and an RMIT University School of Accounting Advisory board. He is a chartered accountant.

Zoe Butt - Executive Director - Sàn Art (Vietnam) Zoe is Executive Director and Curator of Sàn Art, Vietnam’s most active independent contemporary art space and reading room in Ho Chi Minh City. She is also a PhD candidate with the Centre for Contemporary Art and Politics at University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Zoe is a member of the Asian Art Council of the Solomon R. Guggenheim, NYC; a member of the ‘Asia 21 Young Leaders’ of the Asia Society, NYC; and in 2015 became a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum.

Our experienced and diverse advisory board believe in the potential of young Australians and Vietnamese to change the world.

Advisory BoardHuan Dinh - Co-founder - Seedcom and The Gioi Di Dong (Vietnam)Huan is a self-made millionaire, serial entrepreneur and serial investor in retail and technology startups. He is a key influencer in the local startup community in Vietnam. He co-founded Vietnam’s largest retail chains in multiple verticals (mobile devices, consumer electronics, mom & baby products) as well as the largest logistic provider and technology platform provider for retail businesses. Huan’s portfolio companies employ a total of 10,000 staff across all 63 provinces, with annual turnover of almost US$1 billion. He is also an investor in various startup ventures in Vietnam including tiki.vn.

David Do - Managing Director - Vietnam Investment Group (Vietnam)David Do is a Managing Director at VI Group, a Vietnam focused Private Equity firm with US$400 Million under management. David was previously a General Manager at Microsoft where he led Strategy, Mergers & Acquisitions, Investments, Joint Ventures and Post-Merger Integration. His operating experience includes managing global retail, telecom, media, payments sectors for Microsoft’s services businesses and well as serving as a member of the Board of Directors of MSNBC, CNBC, and ninemsn.

Dai Le - Co-founder - Diverse Australasian Women’s Network (Australia)Dai is an award-winning journalist, filmmaker and broadcaster with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and was a Councillor to Fairfield City Council. She is a Member of the Advisory Board of Multicultural NSW. Dai also serves as a director with STARTTS, the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors, and was Deputy Chair of the NSW Ethnic Communities Council. Dai is passionate about increased representation of Asian Australian women and culturally diverse groups in mainstream institutions. Dai formed the Diverse Australasian Women’s Network – DAWN – to create a space where these women, and men, can ‘lean-in’ as they embark on their individual challenges.

Advisory BoardThao Nguyen - Regional Director - UTS Insearch (Vietnam)Thao is Regional Director at UTS Insearch and co-founder of AVYLD. As a corporate lawyer she has advised a variety of multi-national companies on market entry, corporate structuring and acquisitions. In Vietnam, she was the founder and managing head of Ernst & Young Law Vietnam LLP. Thao was formerly a director of the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam.Thao was a member of the National Community Advisory Committee to the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) in Australia, Member of the Australian national NGO delegation to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in Geneva and Management Board Member of the NSW Ethnic Communities’ Council. Thao is currently Chair of the board of Loreto Kids Charity, an education non-profit in Vietnam. She is also a member of the Asian Development Bank’s Mekong Business Initiative Women’s Cabinet.

Trung T. Nguyen - Chairman and CEO - DTT Technology Group (Vietnam)Trung is CEO of DTT, known as one of the few private ICT companies that lead some IT-related movement in Vietnam recently such as E-Government, STEM Education, and ‘Internet of Things’ startups. Currently millions of Vietnamese are using DTT software to access Government e-services. DTT also expanded to global market since 2006 with its presence in Silicon Valley, USA, Singapore and EU to provide Software services. DTT was awarded top 10 ICT company in 2014 and many other recognitions. He also founded Da Nang Software Association; starting Vietnam OpenStack community, Vietnam Open E-government Platform community, Vietnam Open Internet of Things community, Vietnam STEM Education Consortium and Countryside Bookization Group.

Darrell Wade - CEO and Co-founder - Intrepid Travel (Australia)Darrell is the co-founder of Intrepid Travel and CEO of Intrepid Group, the world’s largest provider of adventure travel experiences. Over the course of his career, Darrell has been recognised as a leader in business, adventure travel and sustainability. His achievements include being selected as one of the first group of Australians to complete Climate Project training with the Hon Mr Al Gore, winning the NAB Smart Company Award and being named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2002 (along with Geoff Manchester). Darrell also spearheaded Intrepid’s climate management program, with the company realising its goal of becoming carbon neutral in 2010.

Nathan Tran - Digital GrowthNathan is a full-stack developer with experience in UX and game design. He is the founder of Lucal, a platform that lets you explore the world through geotagged 360° videos and photos. Previously, Nathan created an educational game that teaches AI in games through visual programming. He holds a B.Com/B.I.T from University of Sydney.

Khai Ngo - Chief Operations OfficerKhai is the co-founder of AVYLD, co-founder of The Kit Source and an experienced manager at Police Citizens Youth Clubs, a non-profit organisation. He has been recognised as a Young Person of the Year by Bankstown Multicultural Youth Service and is a One Young World ambassador.

Steering CommitteeRachel Bui - Chief Executive OfficerRachel is the co-founder of AVYLD and founder of Aires Lab. Rachel previously worked at muru-D, the startup accelerator backed by Telstra and as an economist at the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance. Rachel is part of the One Young World, Clinton Global Initiative University and Effective Altruism networks.

Anthy has had international and cross-cultural experiences working and studying in Asia. She has volunteered for local non profit organisations and education institutions and is dedicated to building stronger ties between Australia and Asia through education. Anthy holds a Bachelor of Arts (Global) from Monash University and a Masters of Diplomatic Studies from the Australian National University.

Jess Pan - LogisticsJessica's experience spans across working for start-ups to ASX200 multi-national companies, within a project and human resources capacity. She has been involved in complex data migration and transformation projects, which includes recruiting and mobilising large volume of resources.
