Introduction

Sabah is a state of Malaysia which situated in Borneo Island. It is also known as “A Land below the

Wind” with lush tropical rainforests and beautiful islands teeming with an incredible diversity of eco

system. Rich natural resources of Sabah, particularly Oil and Gas have made it as one of the important

hydrocarbon reserve for Malaysia.

The born of Sabah to the world is not just restricted to its natural resources but also on its unique

geological formation and beauty of the nature. Proposed Kinabalu Geopark, in the district of Ranau,

Sabah covers an area of approximately 1000 km2. The Kinabalu Park dominated by Mount Kinabalu

(4,095.2m) with an area of 754 km2 is the core of the proposed geopark. It is Malaysia’s first UNESCO

World Heritage Site. A very wide range of habitats, from rich tropical lowland and hill rainforest to

tropical montane forest, to sub-alpine forest and scrub on the higher elevations can be found here. Its

complex geology consists of the oldest rock in Sabah (Crystalline Basement), highly fractured and

tectonised sedimentary and metamorphic rocks (Trusmadi and Wariu Formations), ophiolite suite

(Chert-Spilite Formation and associated igneous rocks) and the Crocker Formation.

Sabah’s Kinabalu Geopark is considered as a must visit geological area for UTP Petroleum Geoscience

students to understand about anything, from the formation of Sabah to its abundant hydrocarbon

reservoirs.

Other than geological field trip, the participants will also involve in wetlands conservation project at

Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre. This centre is managed by Sabah Wetlands Conservation Society. Our

activities will include Mangrove tree planting and many more.

About Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP)

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was established on 10 January 1997 upon formal invitation by

the Malaysian government. It is located on a 400 hectare site at Bandar Seri Iskandar, Perak Darul

Ridzuan, Malaysia. UTP is a wholly-owned subsidiary of PETRONAS, the national oil company of

Malaysia.

The formation of the university complements government’s effort in turning Malaysia into a centre of

excellence for education in the region. UTP aims to become a leader in technology and education by

producing “well-rounded graduates” which are not only technically competent but possessing desirable

qualities such as critical thinking, creative, aptitude for lifelong learning, business acumen and

communication skills.

UTP offers a wide range of programmes in the engineering and technology fields for undergraduate and

postgraduate levels complemented with a strong focus on Research and Development. Its programmes

are designed with high industry relevance to provide a dynamic learning environment. Programmes

offered are Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and

Electronic Engineering, Petroleum Geosciences, Information and Communication Technology, and

Business Information System. UTP is the first university in Malaysia that offers Bachelor Degree in

Petroleum Geoscience. Currently, the University has enrolled about 6000 students. Its community

comprises of students and staffs from various countries and is located in a beautiful landscape setting,

amidst the new township of Seri Iskandar. Its peaceful environment, wide open spaces and abundant

About American Association of Petroleum Geologists Student Chapter in

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (AAPG-UTP-SC)

American Association of Petroleum Geologists or AAPG was founded in 1917 to become the pillar of

world-wide scientific community. The original purposes of AAPG are to foster scientific research,

advance the science of geology, promote technology, and to inspire high professional conduct. Even

though the codes are classic, they remain as guides for the Association today. Currently, it is the world's

largest professional geological society with over 30,000 members and more than 145 student chapters.

The AAPG student chapter in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (AAPG-UTP-SC) was established on

early 2011. As an affiliation of prestigious AAPG, we support the purpose of AAPG through organising

various geological and industrial related activities whether in or out of campus as we believe, well-

rounded students should be aware and be prepared for the fast evolving of the industry and science.

Furthermore, students get to develop their leadership skills and serve as a focal point in developing a

sense of professionalism through meeting industry representatives.

Geological field trip is one of the AAPG-UTP-SC most important activities. It makes the students

understand how the past and present earth is formed and how it related to the natural resources such as

energy. Last but not least, field experience is certainly the best tool to understand environmental

preservation and conservation.

On March 2011, we kickoff with an educational trip to Petroleum Geoscience Conference & Exhibition

2011 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre; On April 2011, we had organized “Foundation Engagement

Series” to introduce Petroleum Geoscience program to the foundation students; On July 2011, we had a

Technical Talk on “Marcellus Shale – Unconventional super gas play in eastern United States” by

Professor Dr. D. Jeffrey Over from State University of New York; On August 2011, a Technical Talk on

“Tectonic Activities in West Java” by Prof. Dr. Ir. Hasanuddin from Institute Technology of Bandung;

On September 2011, a short course on “The Petroleum Industry in The Next Decade: An Overview to

The Science, Technology and AAPG” by Dr. Paul Weimer, AAPG President.

Objectives of the Trip

As a society that represents Petroleum Geoscience students, our mission is to expose the students to

different kind of geological formation or setting, so that it will be their invaluable knowledge in the

future for their career or scientific work. Furthermore, the students can apply what they have learned in

lecture room to the field work know-how. Through this geological field trip, the students also have the

opportunity to adapt to the hostile environment which is crucial in today Oil and Gas industry’s working

conditions. Besides, UTP well-rounded students should not only be smart academically but also tough

physically. The involvement in voluntary project by Sabah Wetlands Conservation Society in Kota

Kinabalu Wetland Centre is another initiative by AAPG-UTP-SC to help conserve the nature. It is our

natural duty to conserve the nature while we exploit and develop the mother land. Through this field trip,

we also hope students could brainstorm on ways to conserve the wetland and even conceiving ideas on

their final year research project.

The specific objectives that we hope to achieve are as follows:

1. To expose students to the unique Bornean geologic outcrops and landscapes.

2. To expose students to the formation of North Borneo and how it affects the Petroleum System of

the area.

3. To help sponsoring company in Corporate Social Responsibility.

4. To create well rounded graduates those are capable of being on-field.

5. To conquer Mount Kinabalu – The highest Mountain in South East Asia!

6. To improve AAPG-UTP-SC members’ abilities and skills in terms of leadership, time

management and event organization.

7. To help conserve the vast vulnerable wetlands area in Sabah.

8. To inspire students to do research on Wetlands Conservation.

Conclusion

This geological field trip will not only provide Petroleum Geoscience students with a natural learning

workshop but also an opportunity for them to utilize their lecture room’s knowledge to disclose the

formation of North Borneo and how it related to the Petroleum System in the area. Furthermore, it also

provides a chance for the students to learn how vulnerable and important the wetlands are to the world.

The students could also brainstorm on ways to conserve the wetland and even conceiving ideas on their

final year research project.

Finally, AAPG-UTP-SC sincerely hope that with the sponsor and funding from your company, this

geological field trip will greatly benefit the students and also helping to promote your company among

them. Besides, your company is indirectly involved in Wetlands Conservation as we do this voluntary
