The National Institute for Literacy defines literacy as the ability to read, write, and speak in English, and compute and solve problems at levels of proficiency to function on the job, ...to achieve one’s goals and develop one’s knowledge and potential.

Literacy Defined?

Almost 238,000 adults in Tarrant County cannot read English well enough to read a story to their children. Locally, an additional 28% lack the skills to earn a meaningful wage. (United Way of Tarrant County)

Why Focus on Literacy in Arlington, Texas?

86% (1,070,611) of children whose parents do not have a high school degree live in low-income families. (National Center for Children in Poverty)

Why Focus on Literacy in Arlington,

Texas

This is the reality for children who are growing up in poverty; books are scarce. In some of the lowest-income neighborhoods in the country there is only one book available for every 300 children. - See more at: www.firstbook.org

Why Focus on Literacy in Arlington, Texas?

What is Little Free Library?

• “It’s a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories.

• In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share. ”

History of Little Free Library• In 2009, Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin, built the first Little

Free Library (LFL). It was a miniature one room schoolhouse, built in tribute to his mother, a former school teacher and book lover. He filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard, with a sign that read FREE BOOKS.

• Rick Brooks, a University of Wisconsin-Madison professor, learned of the LFL. Together, Brooks and Bol thought this to be a vehicle for social good and the LFL concept was born.
