TheMyWaterlooDaysFestivalhasanewhome.OnOctober5,2011theGreaterCedarValleyAlliance/ChambersofCommercetransferredtheFestivalanditstrademarktoanewentity.MainStreetWaterloohasacceptedthiscommunityproject.
Aftermuchdiscussion,theMWDExecutiveCommitteehasreconfirmeditsmissionstatementof
showcasingthecommunityandhavingafamilyfocus.Inmakingthesechoices,thefestivalislookingtopartnerwithmembersofourcommunity.Therearefinancialandvolunteeropportunitiestoassistinremakingthefestival.
Ourthemethisyearisa“BLASTfromthePAST!”andasthisimplies,thefestivalisbringingbackpopular
eventsthatoncedrewthousandsofpeople.However,weneedyourhelptomakethishappen.Aswelooktothepast,weinviteyoutowalkwithusintothefuturetomakethisareality.

My Waterloo Days Festival History
MyWaterlooDaysisundertheumbrellaofaprivate,non‐profitorganization.The“My
Waterloo”campaigncamefromtheCommunityAffairsCounciloftheWaterlooChamberofCommerce.TheyidentifiedproblemsandopportunitiesofWaterloo.ThisdiscussionledtoarecommendationtotheBoardofDirectorstodevelopandimplementamajorcommunicationprograminsupportofthe
imageofWaterloo.AspecialtaskforcewasappointedbytheChambertodevelopanimageimprovementprogram.Atwelvemonthpromotionalcampaignwasdevelopedanddividedintothreeparts.
PhaseIwasthemultimediaadvertisingincludingthe“MW”song.Thisphasealsoconsistedof
donatedadvertisingtimeandspacebyallmajorTVandcable,radio,newspapers,outdoordisplay,andmovietheaterswithanestimatedvalueexceeding$150,000.
PhaseIIwasdesignedtobringpeopletoWaterloobyshowcasingtherecreational,entertainment,andculturalopportunities,andatthesametime,thebusinessandretailcommunity
wouldbepositivelyaffected.Thus“MWD”wascreated.
PhaseIIIwasabusinessdevelopmenteffortaimedatcreatingnewjobsbybringingbusinessandindustrytoWaterloo.ThiseventuallyledtotheformationoftheCedarValleyEconomicActionCompanywhichiscountywide.
TheoriginalgoalofMWD,whichholdstruetodayaswell,wastodrawthousandsofpeopleinto
ourcitytoshowandsharethatweareproudofWaterlooandthatWaterlooisagreatplacetolive,workandplay.Toreachthisgoal,theobjectivesweretoprovideawidevarietyofactivitiesandeventsthatappealtoalltypesandagesofpeople.Itwasalsotheintentthattheseeventsbelocated
throughoutthecityatvariouslocations.
Theplanningforthiscity‐widecelebrationbeganin1981withthefirstfestivalin1982.Thefestivalwasa10dayfestivalpackedwitheventsthatweregearedtothegeneralpublicandfamiliesas
wellasspecialsportingevents,specialpopulationevents,culturalevents,musicevents,seniorevents,youthevents,andcompanytours.
AsoneofthelargestcelebrationsinIowa,the“MyWaterlooDays”Festivalisenjoyedbyover150,000spectators.In1988,theIowaTravelCouncilpresentedMWDtheOutstandingAchievement
AwardattheIowaTourismConferenceinAmes.TheAmericanBusAssociationchose“MWD”asoneoftheTop100EventsinNorthAmericafor1989.AtthemediapresentationsattheInternationalFestivalsAssociation,MWDwasawardedtheAudioVisualAward–VideoTape–OneMinutesorLessGeneral.
Eighteen(18)otherfestivalscompetedforthisaward.
Throughtheyears,thefestival’sbudgethasgrown.MWDreliesonsponsorships,salesofMWDmerchandise,apercentagefromfoodandbeveragevendorsandbuttonssalestofundthefestival.The
MWDFestivalreceivesnomonetaryfundingfromtheCity,CountyorState.However,theFestivalreceivestremendousco‐operationfromtheCityofWaterloointheformofservicesandrealizestheirenormouscontribution.Thethirty‐five(35)membersteeringcommittee,plusanExecutiveDirector
makesthisayearroundbusiness.
Trulyacommunity‐widecelebration,hundredsofvolunteersareinvolvedintheplanningandstagingofthefestival,whichappealstoabroadrangeofagegroupsandentertainmenttastes.The31yearhistorythefestivalhasexperiencedcanonlybetheresultofthecivicprideandtheoutstanding
cooperationwehavereceivedfromthecountlesshardworkingvolunteersandthesupportofcommunity‐mindedcorporations.
In2000,theFestivalbecameafourdayevent.OnOctober5,2011theGreaterCedarValleyAlliance/ChambersofCommerce(formerlytheWaterlooChamberofCommerce)transferredthe
Festivalandit’strademarktoanewentity.MainStreetWaterloohasacceptedthecommunityproject.

In1986,MWDheldthefirstoutdoorlasershowinIowa.Nowinits31styear,thefestivalisbringingthiseventback.ITWILLBEA“BLASTFROMTHEPAST”.Family‐orientedmusicfromclassicrocktotoday’shitswillpermeatethesoundwaveswhilefullcolorlasergraphicsandimageswillbeprojectedonalaser
screen,andhigh‐poweredaerialbeamswillprojectoutovertheaudience.YouwillhearthecrowdroarwithapprovalwhentheMWDsongisheardovertheloudspeakers.Atthecloseofthefireworks/lasershowthemusicwillbeapatriotictributetoourcountry.
Thefireworksandlaserswilllastapproximately50minutesbeginningbetween9:45–10PM.Priorto
thefireworks/lasershow,bandswillentertainthegatheringcrowd.Activitiesforthefamilywillbeheldonsiteandfollowingthefireworks/lasershowthemusicwillbeginagain.
