Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex at institutions that receive funding through the U.S. Department of Education. Sex discrimination can take many forms sexual harassment, sex stereotyping, failing to provide equal educational opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM), and failing to provide equal opportunity and equal treatment in an athletic program. This training will introduce CIOs and CSSOs to the standards the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) uses in determining whether or not an institution’s athletic program is in compliance with Title IX. The training will focus on clearly explaining OCR criteria and providing practical guidance on evaluating your current program. The goal the training is to assist you and your institution’s Title IX Coordinator in achieving and maintaining Title IX compliance.

A critical element of the student success initiative is developing alternative approaches to basic skills curriculum and improving support for at-risk underprepared students. Research shows that students who have hope, self-efficacy and become active, engaged learners tend to be more successful students and complete their academic plans. Measuring affective learning enables colleges to identify the students’ affective learning gaps and design effective interventions to support the students’ success. Panelists will discuss how measuring affective learning helps close the achievement gap.

Community colleges are being tasked with developing efforts to enhance student success of our diverse student populations. More focus is being placed on Student Equity: looking at which students are succeeding, which are not, and developing agendas and interventions to enhance success rates. Partnerships between Student Services and Instruction are the only way to address these issues. Connecting with students, utilizing culturally-relevant instructional strategies, developing appropriate assessment models and enhancing students’ sense of self-efficacy are all pieces of the solution. Presenters review the draft Student Equity Plan requirements being released by the Chancellors Office and will build upon work initiated thus far and provide insights for developing the Student Equity Plan in concert with the Student Success and Support Program.
