It’s hard to believe that it’s been six years since we launched the first annual National Black Book Festival in 2008. Since those auspicious beginnings, the event has grown into a celebration of African-American literature which readers across the U.S. look forward to every year. Thanks to all of the authors, readers, educators and volunteers who have made this journey with us. We also want to thanks the members of our steering committee whose commitment to NBBF has never waned.

We want to especially thank Fallbrook Church for allowing us to host this year’s event within its spacious facility. Fallbrook’s leadership and members have a genuine commitment to being involved with the local community, and holding the Festival on the church’s campus fits nicely with that objective. The 2014 National Black Book Festival has already been put on Fallbrook’s calendar and the dates are Oct. 25-25, 2014.

Although the book industry is in a state of transition with the closing of many brick-and-mortar bookstores and the popularity of ebooks, reading is still an extremely popular pastime. The Festival gives authors a much-needed avenue to reach readers directly, one which will likely become more important in future years as the opportunity for one-on-one time with authors becomes more challenging.

Please continue to support those who write stories about African-American culture and keep our history and voices alive. We hope you enjoy this year’s event and be sure to put 2014 NBBF on your calendar.

A WORD FROM THE NBBFCO-FOUNDERS

The number seven is considered to symbolize luck, but on this 7th anniversary of the National Black Book Festival, we celebrate the blessing of continuing to see our dream come to fruition. Seven years ago, we envisioned a national event where authors, readers, book clubs, publishers and others in the book industry could come together for a weekend of literary exchange. Since then, the seed of that idea has blossomed into our seventh consecutive year bringing all those ele-ments together under one roof.

We appreciate all of those who have supported and attended NBBF over the years, including our dedicated volunteers who put so much energy into ensuring that all of the attendees enjoy their weekend. We especially appreciate the NBBF Steering Committee members – Oswald Scott, Fon James and Rhonda Jackson Joseph – for their years of dedicated service.

Fallbrook Church has been the site for NBBF for the past two years, and we have already scheduled the dates for 2015, which will be Oct. 22-24. Fallbrook Church has a reputation throughout the state of Texas as an institution that believes in community outreach and involvement. The spacious facility at Fallbrook makes it a perfect location for the weekend’s activities.

This year, more than 80 authors are in attendance from across the U.S., represent-ing all genres of literature. Be sure to support their work by purchasing and reading their books. Literature is important for advancing the legacy of African-American culture and passing our history and creativity to the next generation. Be sure to save the date for next year’s NBBF – Oct. 22-24, 2015.
