About the Seminar
Womens Studies (WS) is an academic arm ofwomens movement which analyze the discourse ontext and context of inequalities. It is an intellectualagent to change women from an object of knowledgeinto a subject capable of appropriating knowledge.
Womens Studies has been developed more thanfive decades ago to tackle the inequalities anddisparities in the society. It is particularly interested inexamining the specific ways in which some groups areadvanced and others still at the disadvantaged state.Womens Studies as an Academic Discipline poseschallenges than opportunities. It has many challengesfrom the established mainstream disciplines andknowledge.
The discipline has to fight against the establishedsocial construct of gender, power relations andintellectual ideologies.
The womens movement began to effect socialtransformation, but they have been subject to increasingbacklash from conservative forces that resist suchchanges. Hence the studies should focus on practicalneeds of women and nations socio-economic andpolitical needs.
Against this back drop the Womens StudiesCentre and the Dept. of Womens Studies proposed toorganize a two-day National Seminar on Challengesand Strategies of Womens Studies as an AcademicDiscipline with the following objectives :
To find out the theoretical frame work for WomensStudies perspective in different dimensions ofactivities such as teaching, research, advocacy, fieldoutreach etc.
To network with different s takeholders andacademicians for the mainstreaming the disciplineand develop curriculum and teaching method.
To integrate Womens Studies perspectives in thecontent of subject matter through the gendering oflanguage, teaching methodology and orientationand
To identify various challenges and strategies tosecure recognition and legitimacy with inacademia.
Call for papersThe Seminar is open to Teaching and Research staff
of Womens Studies Centers and Depts, NGOS, Govt.officials and stakeholders, involved in the field ofwomen and gender issues.Sub-themes1. Networking of Womens Studies Centre for
curriculum development, clustering and mentoringand twinning programmes.
2. Develop theoret ical and methodologicalparadigms to contextualize women and gender inthe field of Social Sciences, Humanities and otherDisciplines.
3. New insights in interdisciplinary, multi-disciplinary and action research with genderperspective.
4. Womens Studies perspectives to policy makersand other stake holders.
5. Womens Studies as an academic discipline faceschallenges and requires future strategies.
Abstracts (not more than 300 words) in English (in A4size paper, single space, 12 font Times New Roman)may be sent to [email protected] on or before14-02-2014. The name Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam(SPMVV) is self explanatory enough to suggest that itis an exclusively Womens University, whichincidentally enjoys the unique distinction of being thefirst of its kind in Andhra Pradesh and the second of i ts
kind in India. Ever since its inception in 1983 with theprime objective of emancipation and empowerment ofwomen through education, it has been offeringvaried and professionally oriented post-graduateand graduate courses. The participation of womenin the community development forms animportant component of the curriculum. Accordinglyemancipation of women through an acquisition ofadequate knowledge and their empowerment throughskill upgradation, deep involvement and activeparticipation in various activities of the society are
meant for reaching the goal of establishing a progressiveegalitarian society.
About Womens Studies Centre
The Womens Studies Centre with the support ofthe UGC was established in 1984 and the financialgrant was released in 1988 to get its diversified activitiesrelating to womens development and empowerment.The underlying philosophy of the Womens StudiesCentre is to generate knowledge and to transmit itthrough teaching, training, research, documentationextension and curriculum development thus
facilitating the academic diversification for theintellectuals as well as for the activists, NGOs and thepersonnel working for gender empowerment. At presentthe Centre is in the third phase. The Department ofWomens Studies was started in 1989 with PGprogramme in Womens Studies and the ResearchProgrammes were introduced in 1990. The Departmentis also offering P.G. programme in Applied Economicssince 2003 and Economics in 2013.
