As many of you may know, I love trail running. In

my opinion, there is nothing better than speeding along a deserted trail through the woods. Throw in a few steep hills, stream crossings and some deep, slimy mud and I am in heaven. Well, this last fall, I met my match – the Bays Mountain Trail Race. Don’t get me wrong, the course is awesomely brutal (read “fun”) and Mark Skelton always puts on a classy event. Unfortunately, about 3 miles from the finish line, the water-soaked, creek bank I was running on collapsed. In the resulting fall, I crushed my right ankle (you know, one of those injuries where you actually see stars…). Then, after finishing the race, I turned it a second time in the parking lot. After a week of rest, ice, compression, anti-inflammatories and elevation, I went out for a jog with Allison and Megan and - you guessed it - turned it a third time!

Not surprisingly, at this point I quit running

completely. I went to Watauga Orthopedics to get the injury checked out. The verdict – if the ankle remained unstable I had a choice – either quit running or face a joint replacement by age 50! Agggghhhh!!!! Not exactly what I wanted to hear. For over two months, I went to physical therapy 3 times a week and did at least 1 hour of nightly exercises designed to strengthen and stabilize my ankles. I also ran 5-6 days a week in the ETSU pool. Let me tell you - pool running may be great training if you have a joint injury, but two or three hours of running in the pool is BORING. There were times where I thought that the minute hand on the wall clock was actually spinning in reverse!

Finally, just before leaving for my honeymoon in

December, I had my ankles stress tested. The results would determine whether I could resume running or would have to give it up for good. As you can imagine, I was pretty nervous. The outcome…my ankle is stable and I CAN RUN AGAIN!!!

Thanks to God, to my friends/family and to the

good folks at Watauga Orthopedics, I will continue to see you all out on the road!

. . . . . From the President’s Pen SFTC President – Steve Pastorek

2002…..That was the start of my running career with the State of Franklin Track Club and the end of my free time. There are 3 races that stick out in my mind from that year: Race for Humanities 5k, Pink Ribbon 5k (Race for the Cure) and Crazy 8’s. April 2002, I ran Race for Humanities in Bristol, with no warm-up and no cool-down. My thought was, “why are these people wasting their energy before the race by running?” To top it off, the same people were running after the race. Once again I thought, “how are they running after the race, did they not use all their energy?” Crazy 8’s 2002 was the first time Allison beat me in a race. Allison was the one who made me come to these crazy races. I played sports all my life and have always loved to compete. I had participated in some road races in Knoxville when I was in my late teens but never took it seriously. Up to the point of Crazy 8’s, I was not training too much and would go race the races on about 10 to 20 mile weeks (More on the ten side). After the fact that my wife DROPPED ME on the last mile, I finally decided that if I was going to race, I better start training. Pink Ribbon 5k 2002 is probably the most important race of 2002 and maybe of my simple race career. Pink Ribbon-which is now Race for the Cure had two significant meanings to Allison and I. Allison’s mother is a breast cancer survivor. So this event is close to our heart. This race was also Allison’s first win!! I think I was more excited than she was. I remember as I was finishing the last mile (this was one of the few times I beat Allison in 2002), I started to get emotional thinking about Allison and if she was going to win. We were still new to racing and when we went to turn in Allison’s card we could not find the first overall basket. There were baskets with ages on them, but none of them said overall winner. Luckily, Hank Brown came by and helped us out. So, if you participate in a race that Allison and I direct and there is an overall basket, you will know why. Running has been great for me. I have made life-long friends though running. I would like to thank everyone that I have met though running for being so nice to my wife and me. I hope that this year with me as President of the club, I can build upon the work of the previous Presidents and Members. Please check the event calendar on the website for upcoming races and social events.

Clinch River Days 5K Trail Challenge Run The Annual Clinch River Days 5K Trail Challenge Run in Saint Paul, Virginia, is being held on a Sunday this year due to the Saint Paul High School group reunion activities on Saturday. It is scheduled for Sunday, June 3, 2007, with registration beginning at 5:00 p.m. The 5K walk begins at 5:30 p.m., and the 5K race begins at 5:45 p.m. Cash prizes, amount to be determined, will be given to the top three overall winners of men's and women's groups. There are also many age group trophies and ribbons handed out at this event. Almost everyone who participates has won something in the past, and all participants (and race volunteers) will receive a race T-shirt. This is NOT a road race, it is a bonafide mountain race! It is run on a hilly course along the scenic Sugar Hill trail system that runs with the Clinch River dividing Wise and Russell Counties in Southwest Virginia. The first one-third of the course is a steep uphill grade on dirt/gravel, second third is a downhill grass trail, last third is relatively flat gravel trail. If the trail is too muddy the day of the race, the trail course may be altered and made less hilly that day. This is a grassroots effort, so volunteers are always needed and welcomed. Please visit www.blueridgeraces.com for more information and for any schedule changes. The race director is Joyce Kilgore, who can be reached at [email protected] or 276-971-6464. The Sugar Hill trail system has several miles of maintained trails on private land owned by Frank Kilgore, a supporter of land conservation, and is open to the public for use year-round. The system contains walking/running/bicycling trails for all skill levels. Saint Paul is only about 30 minutes from I-81 in Abingdon, and about 45 minutes or so from I-26 in Kingsport (via Gate City). Even if you can't come to the race, try it out sometime!

Ankle Sprains By Bryan Whitesides MPT, OCS

Bryan is a board certified orthopedic clinical specialist and founder of The Injured Runner. www.injuredrunner.com

Ankle Sprain injuries usually affect the ligaments and muscles on the outside of your ankle. Some sprains are minor and will allow you to continue walking or running. A more severe sprain deserves proper evaluation and rehabilitation. The Ottawa ankle rule can help you decide if you need to make a trip to your doctor or the emergency room. It was developed and researched at an emergency room in Ottawa, Canada, to select who truly needed an x-ray and who could safely avoid the expense. The guideline is as follows:

1. Is it painful to touch the posterior (back) portion of the distal fibula (boney bump on the outside of your ankle - lateral view)?

2. Is it painful to touch the posterior (back) portion of the distal tibia (boney bump on the inside of your ankle - medial view)?

3. Are you unable to bear weight at all after injury or unable to walk 4 steps (even if limping)?

X-rays and guidance from a healthcare professional are needed if you answer yes to any of these three questions.

The following tips can help you more quickly and completely recover following an ankle sprain:

• If you are limping when you walk consider using crutches until you no longer limp. Yes, crutches are a nuisance, but using them for just a few days can dramatically improve your recovery time. Try to walk with a normal pattern using the crutches to reduce weight on the ankle instead of keeping your foot off of the ground.

• Instead of running or walking, cycle for a few days. Cycling will help get your ankle moving during the painful period and also provides some mental therapy. Limit your running or walking distance to what you can do without limping. If you want to exercise more, supplement your program with cross training i.e. water running, cycling or an elliptical trainer.

• Ice applications help stop the inflammatory process. Wrap a flexible ice pack around your ankle for fifteen minutes with your ankle elevated. Repeat two to four times per day and continue until the swelling is substantially improved.

• Compression with the addition of a horseshoe shaped felt pad, greatly reduces the effects of swelling (which will slow your recovery). Place the horseshoe as illustrated and use a two-inch elastic wrap to firmly wrap your ankle (not so tight that you restrict blood flow).

• As symptoms improve begin gentle bent knee calf stretches and straight knee calf stretches. Limitation of motion in this direction is the most common complication following an ankle sprain. Make sure you stick with these stretches until both ankles are able to bend the same amount.

• A sprain can substantially alter your balance and lead to future injuries or re-injury. Balance training can be as simple as practicing standing on the injured leg with your eyes closed. For a more advanced approach you can purchase a balance board and toss a ball against a wall while standing on it. For a program specifically designed to help runners or walkers improve strength and balance check out the new DVD A Balanced Solution.

My First Real Run By Donna Bays

I doubt that anyone within the Legal Department has escaped the announcements of my intentions of running in the Funfest Crazy 8's 8K this year. I made these announcements not to be boastful but instead to give myself no way to back out. Well, it worked. I ran the race. I have found that beginning your first exercise program after turning 40 does have its advantages. I mean, if this paralegal gig doesn't work out I've got a lot of material for a stand-up comedy act. Here are some of my thoughts about the 8K. I went into the race with just one basic goal . . . to finish. But on top of that basic goal I did have a couple of hopes. First, I didn't want to be last. Second, I was really hoping to finish in under an hour. Well, you win some and you lose some. I lined up in the starting area very realistic, in the back. On the advice of my coach (yes, stop laughing, I do have a coach) I did move to the inside lane to take advantage of the tangents (shortest route possible). But you know, thinking back, I don't think that gave me the competitive edge I was hoping for. I mean, when you finish in the 1048th place should tangents really be at the top of the mental check-off list? No, I don't think so. Within the first half mile I began passing folks. This was a huge emotional lift. However, as I looked back to make sure they were going to make it through the dust I was kicking up, I realized the two ladies were actually walking and the two men were in full military uniform. The only skin you could see was their face and hands. I later heard they were also carrying 30 lb. packs. During the race I did discover one deficiency in my training . . . I didn’t practice the finer points of water breaks. I never knew how difficult it was to drink water while you're gasping for air. I lost at least 30 seconds on my finish time after my first and only water break because I was doubled over trying to cough the water out of my lungs. I now understand why kids make that sound when they drink water after playing. Another high point came around mile three when I began passing some folks that had just tuckered out and was forced to recover by walking. But I soon realized that for a couple of 20-somethings I was their sign. They would walk until I passed them and then they would take off, fast. A few minutes later I would pass them and again they would take off. Not good for the 41-year old spirit. And yes, they sprinted past me at the finish line. If you ever see my finish line photo you will see that I'm laughing. I was laughing because I realized that sprinting for the difference between 1047th or 1048th position probably wasn't worth the effort. Anyway, at that point I was just praying not to be the new poster girl for "Wide World of Sports" agony of defeat clip. My last emotional blow came near the end of the race when four high-school age guys ran past me. I initially thought . . . Hey, I'm not doing too bad if these guys are just now passing me, but then I listened to their conversation. They had already finished and were on their cool down run. Yes, I had been lapped. I was very pleased to cross the finish line and I was happy with my run. I accomplished two of my goals, I finished and I wasn't last. But my final time was 61:29. Next year it will be under an hour! ON TO THE EASTMAN 10K!

My Experience as a First Time Race Director By Jeff Bloomer

The Corn Maze 5K was completed over the Labor Day weekend and I was very pleased with the turn-out. The race raised some needed money for the Greeneville High Cross Country program and participants appeared to be happy enough with their experience. My experience on the other hand was a bit different.

I thought to myself that it might be a good idea for the area runners who enjoy our SFTC races to know a little about what it takes to make it all happen. And, Rob has made numerous statements that more people needed to submit stories….So here you go. Early in the summer I had the idea of raising money and thought putting on a road race would just be my thing. I don’t enjoy going door-to-door begging, so doing something I already enjoy seemed to make sense. First, I had to find the place to hold a race event so I called up Carroll Fender to check on his farmland out in Jonesborough. He was more than willing to help out, so the location was set. Then I had to figure out how to get the money for the start-up costs. This is when I knew that some begging would have to occur. Being a coach gives me access to some great parents, so I hit them up to solicit sponsorship for our cross country program. We all scrambled and began talking to local businesses and began having positive results. Enough money was raised through this process to already cut a profit. Pressure off, right? Wrong! Does anybody, other than current and previous directors of course, know how much it takes to put on a small race? A lot! Here’s a list of my expenses: 100 t-shirts: $500 + Trophies: $240 + Food/beverages: $100 + SFTC rental equipment: $170 + Miscellaneous: $50 = Total: $1150 Now I know some of you are looking at this and thinking, “Wow! $5 per shirt…and those trophies are sure cheap.” Well, the shirts are priced are after I have negotiated with the business to give us free screen-printing and the trophies include freebies and 50% discounts. Remember, I hate begging! We were also given all of the water and the volunteers worked for free, thank goodness. Baked items were also brought along with those great parents. Matt Studholme and I had to get together and measure the course. That was a fun experience watching Matt trying to ride his bike through a corn field and negotiate the clods of dirt. We both walked away a little bloody from that experience. Oh, and he graciously donated his time for this. Great guy. Just the day of the race itself is a very fatiguing experience. How about running around trying to spray paint arrows in every conceivable location to make sure people won’t get lost. Then there is the whole mud factor. Thank goodness it stopped raining the day before. Questions like, “Will people hate me after they run this thing?” and “Do I look like the missing link running around aimlessly trying to finish setting up?” pop into your head. Placing volunteers on the course and “bossing” people is a little tough as well. Anyway, it is a much easier world when you simply run a race. I felt about the same after directing the Corn Maze as I did after running the Knoxville Marathon. Now I know why Bob Townsend looks like a mad man before the races he puts on. Thanks goodness for people like him. The point of this article is not to whine about how hard I worked. I know other directors have done much more than me. I just want to relay my appreciation for all of the volunteers, sponsors and especially the directors for making the SFTC a reality. We are so lucky to have such a fine schedule of races. Be sure to hug your race directors often and give them your support. Without them, you’ll be running alone.

2007 SFTC King and Queen Race Series Standings By Matthew Studholme, K & Q Coordinator

The 2007 King and Queen Competition consists 28 races ranging in distance from 1 mile (Santa Special Open Mile) to 15 miles (Bays Mountain Trail Race). All SFTC members that are 15 years or older as of January 1 are automatically signed up for the 2007 competition. There is no entry fee or form to fill in. The full list of King and Queen (K & Q) races designated for 2007 is given below. The status of the competition is updated on the “King/Queen” section of the SFTC website after each K & Q race.

Page 7: SplitTimes Jan-March 2007 - SFTC · Jan-March 2007 Vol. 30, Number 1Jan-March 2007 Vol. 30, Number 1 In This Issue…RONA is Back (as the BAE)…Ankle Injury Care…Confessions of

Split Times, page 7

To qualify for the competition, each runner, besides having to be an SFTC member, must complete at least six K & Q races that total at least 25 miles and have at least three volunteer service points. All races are age-graded using factors (1994 edition) published by the World Association of Masters Athletes, the world governing body for masters athletics. Age grading is a method of adjusting a runner’s performance based on age and gender so that times can be compared across different ages and sexes. For distances other than 10 km, the time is also adjusted (“normalized”) using a well-established formula devised by Pete Riegel. The Riegel formula was published in Runner’s World more than 20 years ago and has stood the test of time as it is still used widely today. A runner’s K & Q qualifying time is the average age-graded and 10 km-normalized time of his best six races which total at least 25 miles. If a runner’s six best races total less than 25 miles, then his other next best longer K & Q races will be substituted in place of shorter races until his six qualifying races total at least 25 miles. The other part to qualifying for K & Q, is volunteering for the club – three volunteer service points are required. Volunteering takes lots of different forms although most commonly it must be performed at an SFTC-owned event or an event where SFTC has been hired. This includes races, social events, and board meetings. By the way, any SFTC member can attend one of the board meetings and get a volunteer point for doing so just by sitting and listening - though we’d like your input if you want to give it. Helping out at an SFTC-owned race or one where SFTC has been hired gets a point too, such as working the finish line, handing out water at water stops or calling split times. Making cookies for SFTC-owned events counts as volunteering. Contributing articles to Split Times counts too. In addition, annual points are awarded to named SFTC posts such as board members, equipment manager and membership chair. The bigger the job, the more points are awarded. A more complete list of volunteering activities can be found on the SFTC website under the “Volunteer Points” section. Awards are presented at the annual SFTC banquet in December for male and female overall, masters, grandmasters, and five-deep age groups (15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75 and up). Additional male and female awards are made to the runners that crank up the most K & Q race mileage. There are some changes to the race list for this year. There are three additions. The Justin Foundation 5K in Damascus, VA, (May 12) is an out-and-back course on the scenic Virginia Creeper Trail. It is a very flat (maybe fast?!), course. The Keep Greene Beautiful 5K (not yet scheduled) is not quite as flat; it loops through the center of charming and historic Greeneville, TN. The third addition is the Bays Mountain Trail Race (September 22) which is a challenging 15-mile course on beautiful trails in Bays Mountain Park, Kingsport, TN. We are saddened to see the Stickleyville Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail 8K disappear from the K & Q schedule. Note also that it is presently unclear whether the Race for Humanity 5K and the Apple Festival 4M will be held this year. If they are, then they’ll be K & Q races.

Huntsville Story by Teresa Duffy; photos by Allison Pastorek

Huntsville’s 30th Rocket City Marathon was my second marathon. I participated with my husband and a group of other runners from the SFT club. It was a great experience and has become an event that helped prove that I really am a runner. About a year ago, my daughter typed I’m a Runner on the banner of my cell phone. I thought it was sweet, but at the time it didn’t hold much meaning for me. I was afraid it was not an accurate description of me, and I planned on changing it as soon as possible. Now that I have completed my second marathon, I am beginning to think differently. Many events attributed to the realization that maybe I am a runner. Everyone that we traveled to Huntsville with are definitely runners. Listening to their past experiences, discussing race day clothing (it was cold), talking about times we wanted to run, and eating the pre-marathon pasta dinner together made me feel included and involved, even though I knew I would be the slowest of the group. At the starting line on the day of the marathon, women had to line up on the left and men to the right. As I began to settle into the spot I’d chosen between 4 ½ to 5 hours time, I heard my husband’s name. Two ladies were discussing people they knew from our area, and wondered if Gerry was running with his wife. I turned around to let them know that I was Gerry’s wife, and that he would be competing for this marathon--not running with me. Somehow saying that my husband was not running with me out loud reminded me that I was on my own for this very long run. I was going to have to coach myself. Panic began to creep in, but so did a little bit of pride. Then I was introducing myself to Mary Lou Day, editor of Running Journal. She was one of the ladies that had been discussing the tri-cities runners. Wow! I was lined up at the start with this very experienced marathon runner. Panic flared up again, and I thought maybe I should back up a few more rows, but then the gun fired and we were off. The course was great. It was mostly flat and wound through many of Huntsville’s neighborhoods. Many people came out to cheer on the runners, and the police department made it a very safe course. After the half-marathon point, a group of shirtless, camouflaged–painted, high school boys gathered in front of a shopping center to high five runners going past. This gave me enough momentum to keep moving. Sometime after mile 15, I was living for the mile marker count downs. When I was between 16 and 17, two little girls were standing in a driveway. Just as I approached, I heard them say, “1-2-3: You can do it! Believe in yourself! Follow your dreams!” This was enough encouragement to get me through to the next drink stop. Somewhere between miles 18 and 19, I slowly passed two men. I was still close enough to hear their conversation about past running adventures like running Pike’s Peak and other mountain runs out west. These guys were tough runners, and I was right there running with them! This provided more positive vibes to get me through to the next mile marker.

Fortunately, at mile 20 another SFTC runner and friend, Jennifer, was waiting to run with me to the finish. Her positive attitude and support were exactly what I needed at that point. Although my last six miles were my slowest, I knew that I would reach the finish line. I also knew that I had my marathon PR at 5:13. I was not a fast runner, but I was a finisher. At the finish, I heard the good news that my husband ran well, and that everyone in our little group either placed in their age group and/or had a personal record. There was one exception, and he knows who he is. He is also someone who gave me very good advice on the way to Huntsville. In effect, he said that no matter how well you train and prepare yourself, it all comes down to the day. That day will decide how you run. This second marathon experience has definitely made me feel more like a runner. I am still going to change my cell phone banner though. I am going to add an exclamation point.

Thoughts from a Wannabe By Brenda Fox

Most of you who know me, or who know my husband, David, and me as a couple, know that, of the two of us, I am NOT the runner in the family. David is the runner, and I’m the dancer. I started taking dance lessons at the age of 5, and actually have a B.S. degree in Dance Education – no joke! I’ve always been fairly limber and have the turned out feet of a dancer. People who know David as a runner used to ask me if I ran, and my stock answer was always, “Only when the kids are in danger, and if David is around not even then, because he’s faster than me.” About 3-4 years ago, I decided since we were finished adding to our family of three kids, I would get more serious about losing the “baby” fat and trying to get back into some semblance of pre-children shape. I’ve always enjoyed walking as exercise, and, of course, dancing if the opportunity arose. But I decided that these just weren’t getting me back in shape quickly enough. Have I mentioned that patience is not my strong point?? Anyway, when I would go walking, I would intersperse it with a few minutes of running. The next time, I’d try to

make the running segments a little longer. I didn’t say anything to David at first, thinking he would think I was nuts. But finally, I needed some advice, and who better to ask than the guy who lives in the same house as I do, who always rescues the kids, and oh, yeah, is a runner? So, I told him what I was doing. I think he was sort of flabbergasted at first. But he offered to go with me the next time I did my walk/run regimen. And sure enough, he was full of helpful hints. One of my biggest challenges is keeping my toes pointed in front of me when I’m running and not letting them move into the dancer’s turned out position. I do better these days than when I first began, but when I get tired they tend to stray outward. Also, I’m not a very fast runner. I’ve improved from 3-4 years ago, but I’m never going to run faster than an 8-minute mile (which I’ve only done once, by the way). I used to wish I could be faster, but I’m getting over it. And I’ll let you in on my biggest secret – I’m not overly fond of running. The only thing that keeps me running is that impatience thing – walking takes too long! The one thing I do like is the feeling of accomplishment I get when I finish a run. Accomplishment at having reached whatever goal I’ve set for myself that day, and for having burned some calories. Do I consider myself a runner? Not really. I’m more a “jogger”. A “wannabe”. I stand in awe of those of you who run sub 9-minute miles and appear to actually enjoy it! And I like hanging around with runners. The camaraderie of folks at a race or a low-key group run, encouraging each other, offering suggestions for race-related injuries, planning the next run/race – you’re a good group of people to hang with. I do have a standing bet with David – if I ever beat him in a race, he has to take dance lessons with me. I have a feeling that’s a pretty safe bet for him, don’t you?

Rails to Trails for Johnson City? By Rob Schoborg

Johnson City is planning to construct a ten mile “rails-to-trails” trail on an abandoned rail right of way connecting downtown Johnson City to Elizabethton. Natalie Whitlock forwarded the following e mail (in quotations) to me and I am passing it along to the SFTC membership and other readers of “Split Times”. As a resident of Johnson City, I have long wanted a trail similar to the Creeper Trail in Abingdon or the Greenbelt in Kingsport in my community. There is significant local resistance to this project, so anyone interested in lending their support should contact Daniel Reese or Elaine Frantz, 824 W. Pine St., Johnson City, TN 37604; (423)232-5998. “Subject: Proposal for organizing "The Friends of the Tweetsie Trail Dear Friends, Last Thursday night the Johnson City Planning Commission voted to begin the process of removing the train tracks along State of Franklin Drive from University Parkway to Buffalo Street. This is seen as the inaugural steps toward eventually developing a planned use rail trail from Johnson City to Elizabethton. This rail line (the former ET&WNC or Tweetsie Railroad) is now abandoned and has the potential to be a rich resource to our community. It is a ten mile green space averaging fifty feet wide which flows through beautiful countryside, across streams, and is a haven for wildlife. It is as an ideal venue for bicycling, walking, inline skating, wheelchair use, bird watching, and is a quiet interlude in our growing metropolitan area. We have the opportunity to support, encourage, and advocate for this as a high value project which would greatly contribute to the quality of life of the region. With this in mind I am proposing the organizing of "The Friends of the Tweetsie Trail" to be a citizen group which would support the rail to trail project. Please read over the attached proposal and let me know if you might consider being part of this effort. Share this email with those you know who might be interested in participating. I look forward to the days ahead as we seek to make use of this wonderful resource sitting on our doorstep.

As many of you know I strongly believe in our region as a wonderful place to live and that by working together and showing good stewardship of our local resources we can pass along a better future to those who will follow after us.”

The Bridge and Trestle Guerilla Run or “Fun on the Creeper

Trail” Photos and story by Rob Schoborg

On November 4, 2006 a small band of intrepid adventurers (and volunteers) gathered in the sleepy hamlet of Damascus, Virginia for yet another installment of the 17.5 mile Damascus to White Top run (or walk…or crawl). It was a beautiful, 45 degree late fall morning as 17 (give or take a few) runners set forth on a quest to climb White Top Mountain without throwing up. This years participants were: Jerry Anderson, Richard Tyner, Chris Richardson, Charles Dunn, Richard Hulse, Kathleen Withrow, Mark Withrow, Svetlana Luttrell, Eugene Luttrell, Charles Gray, Teresa Duffy, Gerry Duffy, Allison Pastorek, Steve Pastorek, David Sullivan and Meagan Lease, along with at least one unidentified (at least to me) runner. A special thanks goes out to my volunteers: Bob Townsend, Lisa Simpson and Renee’ Bennett. These folks stayed for HOURS to make sure the runners got food, water and a ride down from White Top. I could not put on the run without them – THANK YOU – THANK YOU – THANK YOU!!!! And, by the way Steve, next year YOU get to volunteer and I get to run!

of Knoxville. Awards were also presented to the top three finishers in 5 year age group categories. Runners ranged in age from 15 to 74 years old. 74 year old Harriet Locke of Bristol set a new state age group record. In the four person team competition, Skelton Law Racing defended its previous titles with a winning team of Michael Delano, Todd Skelton, Mark Skelton, and Molly Allen. In the Husband/Wife team competition, Gerry and Teresa Duffy of Jonesborough was the winning couple. In the Parent/Child team competition, Todd and Mark Skelton of Surgoinsville was the winner. The scenic 10 mile race course was certified by USA Track & Field, passing through the town of Surgoinsville and then across and along the Holston River. A buffet of refreshments and the awards ceremony were held in the Surgoinsville Middle School. The Sponsors making this event possible included the Law Office of Mark Skelton, Surgoinsville Medical Board, AtWork Personnel Services, Toyota of Kingsport, Rural Health Services Consortium, Hawkins County Bank, Regional Eye Center, BAE Systems, State Farm Insurance Agent Paul Clark, Eastman Credit Union, Vulcan Materials Company, Williams Drug Store, and Wellmont Health System. The State of Franklin Track Club managed the finish line, with Joanna Skelton and David Fox being in charge of registration and results. Many other SFTC members and community volunteers provided assistance in making the race go smoothly on a day of sunshine with temperatures in the 30’s. Future Skelton Law Racing Series events for 2007 include the Firecracker 4 Miler in Rogersville on July 4, the Phipps Bend 5K at the Phipps Bend Industrial District in Surgoinsville on August 18, and the Bays Mountain 15 Mile Trail Race at Bays Mountain Park in Kingsport on September 22.

War Party 10K Photos and story by Rob Schoborg

The War Party 10 K road race was held Sat. Feb. 5th, 2007 at Warriors Path State Park in Kingsport TN. This race is part of the Tennessee State Parks Running Tour. Despite strong winds and sub-freezing temperatures, the race boasted one of the largest fields in the last 10 years: 167 finishers for the 10K run and 35 for the 5K fitness walk. James Grufferty won the overall title with a time of 34:47.4; Amanda Tate took overall female with a time of 39:05.2. After the event, chilled runners and volunteers alike warmed up with a lunch of yummy turkey gumbo and Amish bread. Race director Bob Townsend and his fateful band of volunteers put on yet another in a long series of high quality running event! THANKS UNCLE BOB!

Roan Mountain 10K Photos by David Fox and story by Rob Schoborg

The Roan Mountain 10 K road race was held on October 21st, 2006 at Roan Mountain State Park near the town of Roan Mountain, TN. For the past 6 years, this race has been held on the first weekend in November. However, this year it was the inaugural event for the Tennessee State Parks Running Tour – thus, the date was changed to the second to last weekend in October. The runners benefited from the change: the weather was warm and sunny-a perfect day for running through the mountains and enjoying the fall colors! In a hard fought race, Brad Yewer won the overall title with a time of 34:06; SFTC’s own Nicole Goodman was 1st overall female, with a time of 45:22. After the event, the runners polished off 7 GALLONS of chili and at least 8 loaves of Uncle Bob Townsend’s famous Amish bread. The race volunteers did their typical professional job registering runners, controlling course traffic, handing out water, working the finish line and tabulating the results. My most hearty “well done” to the many volunteers and many thanks to the rangers and staff at Roan Mountain State Park for all their assistance with the race! 1. SFTC Long Distance Series NOTE that the SFTC Long Distance Series (LDS) rules have changed, effective immediately. The LDS is designed to support and promote long-distance races. It is not a competition but is a recognition of runners who complete several long races in the area. To be eligible for the Long Distance Series awards, you must:

• Be an SFTC member. • Signup with the LDS Manager (Wendy Weidner) by June 1st: send an e-mail to [email protected] or

talk to her at one of the area races. If you have trouble getting hold of Wendy, contact one of the SFTC board members and they should be able to assist. There is no signup fee.

• Earn at least 3 SFTC Volunteer Points (e.g., 3 volunteer acts at SFTC-owned or hired races). • Complete at least 3 SFTC-owned or King & Queen races that are 10 miles or longer.*

All persons meeting the above criteria will receive a *FREE* SFTC LDS sweatshirt at the SFTC Awards Banquet in December. * As of January 2007, the eligible races for the 2007 LDS are included in the list below. For further details visit the SFTC website, www.runtricities.org.

State of Franklin Track Club Grant-In-Aid Application Eligibility: Elementary, middle, junior-high and high schools and other non-profit community organizations from the Tri-cities area (see below) who wish to encourage running/walking as a part of a life-long commitment to fitness. Organizations that wish to create or improve existing programs to encourage children or adolescents to participate in the sport of running are particularly encouraged to apply for funds to implement/improve such programs. Applications from organizations: 1) with a demonstrated track record in implementing community improvement projects and 2) that encourage children or adolescent involvement in the local community will be particularly competitive. Applicant organizations located in the following areas are eligible. Tennessee (Washington Co., Carter Co., Unicoi Co., Greene Co., Hawkins Co., Hamblen Co. and Sullivan Co.); Virginia (Washington Co., Russell Co., Smythe Co., Dickenson Co., Buchanan Co., Wise Co., Lee Co. and Scott Co.). Award: The Grant-In-Aid is an award of up to $500. The SFTC board shall decide at the beginning of each year how many grants will be awarded for that year. The SFTC reserves the right to withhold the awards in any given year if: 1) the funds are not available or 2) none of the submitted applications qualify in the opinion of the review committee. Once the grant is awarded and the non-profit status of the applicant organization is confirmed, a check for the total amount will be mailed to the applicant organization. By accepting the check the applicant organization agrees that: 1) the funds will be utilized ONLY for the purpose described in the application, 2) the funds will be fully disbursed within 1 year of receipt and 3) a final progress report will be submitted after all funds are spent. This final report will contain: 1) a one page description of the funded activity as well as its benefits to the Tri-Cities running community, 2) attached receipts for goods and services totaling to the award amount and 3) an appendix composed of up to 5 additional pages of supporting material (fliers, news paper articles, race results) documenting the success of the funded activity. In order to be eligible for future funding opportunities, an organization MUST submit a final report to SFTC. Please note that this final report becomes the property of SFTC and may be used for promotional purposes. Application Process: The applicant should submit an application following the instructions listed below by June 1st or January 1st of each year. The review committee retains the right to reject late applications, incomplete applications or those that do not follow instructions without review. An ad hoc committee composed of at least three State of Franklin members and up to two members of the local scholastic running community will review the applications. Applicants will be notified of the results within 8 weeks after each deadline. Instructions: A complete application will consist of the following: 1) A cover letter listing the applicant’s name, organization name, organization address, organization tax-free number, applicant’s home phone, applicant’s home address and an e mail address (if available). It is essential that the contact information be up to date and correct so that the applicant can receive award notification. If the contact information changes during the application process, it is the applicant’s responsibility to assure that the review committee has the current address, phone etc. The total number of pages in the application should also be indicated on this page. The applicant should also sign the cover letter in ink. 2) A one page (or less) narrative by the applicant. This narrative should outline the proposed program/activity with emphasis on predicted benefit to the local community and financial need. It is essential that this narrative be concise and well written. Applicants should note that demonstration of financial need may significantly increase the probability of grant funding. 3) A one page (or less) detailed budget. The proposed budget for the Grant-In-Aid should be detailed here. Any single expense greater than $25 should be listed. A short justification of each expenditure (1-2 sentences) should follow each item listed.

4) A one page (or less) list of the applicants’ (or applicant organizations’) most significant previous running and/or community service accomplishments (race/meet volunteering, community service activities etc.). Applicants should note that a previous record of successful service accomplishments may significantly increase the probability of grant funding. 5) All pages of the application should be type written (word processed from a laser or ink jet printer) on white paper with one inch margins and 11 point (or larger) Arial font. All pages should be numbered at the bottom. The applicant should submit the original, signed application and five copies. All copies of the application should be stapled at the upper right hand corner. Mail the original and copies together to the address below: Rob Schoborg Re. State of Franklin Track Club Grant-In-Aid 623 W. Maple St. Johnson City, TN 37601 6) The proposal MUST be post-marked by the due date. Late applications will not be considered for funding in that funding cycle. 7) Questions? Contact Rob Schoborg at [email protected] or 423-439-6295.

Chasing The 5k PR By Hank Brown

Part 3 (of 3 parts)– Turkeys Trot and Reindeers Romp!

Winning a race is not something many runners get to experience in their lifetime. I dare say that 99% of the runners who sardine their way into the starting area at a road race have no grandiose notion of breaking through the victory tape at the finish line. My wife Natalie (also known by her nickname Scat) has never concerned herself with winning races. She calls herself a turtle, says she hated gym class, and was always the last person picked for any athletic endeavor. In the 8th grade a heat-seeking softball found its target (her nose) even though she and her friends had taken great pains to conceal

themselves in the farthest reaches of the outfield. During a kickball game she literally ate the infield dirt when the big red ball got tangled up between her feet as she dashed down the first base line. If there's a crack in the sidewalk, chances are Natalie's toe has tripped over it, causing her to crash to the concrete, sending her limping home with bloody knees and palms like the Confederate soldiers in Gone With The Wind. As she told me one day, "I run for all the non-athletes and the girly-girls who were never any good at sports." Sounds like a good reason to me. So Scat doesn't step on the starting line expecting to outrace everyone to the finish line. That's for jocks, not for self-proclaimed turtles. Her goal is a 5k PR, which she has been chasing for several months, but so far with no luck. It's been hot. It's been humid. It's been hilly. But guess what happened along the way? The tortoise won the race! Scat flew down the monster hill at the Flight of the Vampire 5k faster than all the other women for her first overall victory. She walked around in a state of shock for days before it finally sunk in - a victory for the girly-girls! But while The Vampire was a big improvement over her other fall races, it still wasn't a PR, so the quest continued. However, we were now into the middle of November and quickly running out of time. She was also racing past her peak, but I told her to keep trying as long as she felt good. We had two more races to go so she decided to hang on and give it a couple more tries. Attagirl! So, the Turkey Trot 5k was next up on our 5k PR bus tour. This event is named for its proximity to Thanksgiving Day, and for the winning trophy – a 20 pound frozen turkey! The TT 5k is an all-women's race, with a moderately rolling, double loop course that straddles the sister states of Tennessee and Virginia. I was excited because number 1, I didn't have to race, and number 2, I could go out on the course and cheer for Scat and keep track of her progress. Scat gobbled up that notion in a hurry. "I don't want you out on the course," she ordered. "Why not? I can jog out to the middle of the course and see you come by twice. Then get back for the finish. It will be great." "No. You make me too nervous. You'll be checking my pace, and telling me I started out too fast." Well, she had a point there… Ok, so I resigned myself to loiter around at the finish line and wait patiently. It was frosty cold the morning of the race, which was just about perfect running weather for Scat. For everyone else, it was teeth-chatter time as they warmed up in layers and sweats. Not Scat… just before the start she

Page 38: SplitTimes Jan-March 2007 - SFTC · Jan-March 2007 Vol. 30, Number 1Jan-March 2007 Vol. 30, Number 1 In This Issue…RONA is Back (as the BAE)…Ankle Injury Care…Confessions of

stripped down to her black racing shorts, black UnderArmor top, and Nike shades. Finally, she put on her leopard-pattern gloves. "You're not really going to wear those, are you?" I asked. She glared at me through her dark shades and didn't say a word. "Uh, I think they're great. Good luck. Love you!!" When Scat took her place on the starting line, a little girl looked up at her and said, "I bet you're fast!" The race started and Scat worked her way up near the front of the pack. Go girl! Then they evaporated from the starting area and left me to wait. And wait. And wait. I paced around like an expectant father. I glanced at my watch every few minutes, mentally picturing where she was on the course, and what kind of pace she was on. This was killing me! I should be out there. I bet she went out too fast. For a brief moment, I seriously thought about sneaking out there. Maybe she wouldn't see me. No, Hank, you promised. Stay put. I kept my eyes entranced up the road, watching for the blinking blue lights of the lead police vehicle. After what seemed like weeks, a slim black figure streaked around the final turn, and emerged in the distance. I couldn't tell who it was, but whoever it was had a huge lead. As the frontrunner approached, I noticed she was wearing black shorts and a black top. Could it be? Then as she got within about 100 meters, I confirmed the identity - it was Natalie! "That's my wife!" I shouted to the police officer directing traffic at the corner. He just looked at me like, yeah, big deal. "Go Natalieeeeeeeeeeeee!" Wow! She breezed by me and quickly through the finish – 1st female, 1st person, 1st creature. Chalk up another win for the girly girls! She was pretty excited and told me all about the two loops and how a police officer, who escorted her on his bicycle, parted the sea of slower runners on their first loop as she passed by on her second time around. I should have been out there! On the way home, Scat called her mom to tell her the good news. All I could hear coming from the other end was "WE GOT THE TURKEY!" As good as her race experience had been at the Turkey Trot, it fell just a little short of a PR. She ran a very good time considering the bumpy course, so we were upbeat and ready for the next challenge. We were also somewhat apprehensive because this could be her final chance. A few weeks later we were on the road once again to Charleston, SC for the Reindeer Run 5k. This race was originally supposed to be for fun since they allowed dogs, and Natalie had planned to run it with Cornbread, our little Terrier. But I told her that she probably should run this race on her own because the course was very flat - a good opportunity to finally grab that PR. So, I offered to run with Cornbread. Scat had mixed feelings because she and Bread are inseparable and do many training runs together. Scat attributes much of her improvement over the past year to her "Bread runs," so she was looking forward to racing with her, but after giving it some thought, she agreed it would be better to go it alone. I kept Bread over to the side at the start since it was a big race and I wasn't sure how she would react to the huge crowd. I had only run with this dog one time, and she just about killed me. She is like Superdog – Everything she does is warp speed. She eats fast. She barks fast. She jumps high. And she definitely runs fast! After the starting gun we meandered our way through the crowd, and after about a half mile, started to find some room to run and hit a groove.

Page 39: SplitTimes Jan-March 2007 - SFTC · Jan-March 2007 Vol. 30, Number 1Jan-March 2007 Vol. 30, Number 1 In This Issue…RONA is Back (as the BAE)…Ankle Injury Care…Confessions of

I was hoping that we would either not catch Natalie, or if we did, that we could sneak by on the side of the road so as not to disrupt Natalie's race. But my worst fears came true… Cornbread spotted Natalie up ahead. That dog took off like she was chasing a squirrel! It was all I could do to hang on to the leash as we were now in a dead sprint. We pulled up alongside Natalie and I tried my best to keep Bread running straight ahead. But there was no way I was going to be able to keep Bread away from her beloved Momma! "Bread, c'mon, let's go. Let your momma run." Bread tried to jump up on Natalie but I yanked her away. Natalie kept running and somehow stayed focused. I knew it was killing her not to just stop and let the dog jump up on her and lick her in the face. But we had a race to run! I figured my best bet was to get ahead of Natalie so maybe Bread would forget about her and just run. So I tugged on that leash and tried to get away. Bread turned back to her Momma. I tugged again. Bread took a few steps and turned back again. I yanked again. And again, and again. I'm sure the other runners thought I was abusing our poor little dog. We finally put a gap between Natalie and us, and Cornbread eventually settled back into her groove, but not without a few more backward glances. The rest of the race was uneventful, but we did draw big cheers at the finish line as they announced that Cornbread was the first dog! I now turned my attention to Scat. Surely she couldn't be far behind. After about a minute, she appeared cruising toward the finish. My eyes darted to the big clock. Then back at Scat. She was going to make it! She finally got her PR! It had been quite a journey. We had run through record heat, over mountains, through the dark of night, and in the frosty air. Along the way she hit some lows, some highs, and even won two races. In the end, on the last race of the year, she finally got that evasive PR. "Hey Scat, can we go home now?" See you on the back streets.

Group Runs in the Tri-cities Area

5 PM “Bank” Runs in Johnson City (By Steve Pastorek): A group of 3-8 runners meets in the parking lot of First Tennessee Bank across State of Franklin Ave

from the East Tennessee State University minidome (at the south entrance of the VA Campus) @ 5:15pm Monday – Thursday (and sometimes Friday). Most of us are training for various marathons. Our workouts often follow the following format: Monday- 7 to 9 miles, Tuesday- speed work at the Science Hill outdoor track or trails, Wednesday- usually an easy day (especially if we are racing or doing a long run on Saturday). General pace varies from 7 to 8 minutes/mile with some runners running up to 9 minute miles. Our group is growing and we would like to have more people come out. We do run on the roads so you need to dress accordingly- if you think you will be out after dark (a pretty long run at this time of year), make sure and bring a reflective vest! Email Rob Schoborg at [email protected] if you have any questions. Hope to see you out on the run!

SFTC Board Meeting Minutes July 6th, 2006 6:30pm - Eastman Employee Center: Board Members present: Mark Skelton, Bob Townsend, David Sullivan, Nicole and Jason Goodman, Allison and Steve Pastorek, Matthew Studholme, Eric Fields, David and Brenda Fox. Board Members absent: Bobby Baker, Rob Schoborg. Minutes from the June 1, 2006, Board Meeting were reviewed and approved by the Board. Report from the Treasurer, Eric Fields: Assets total $17,236.78. David Fox mentioned the recent TSSAA ruling about High School Cross Country Team Members not being allowed to run 5K races during Cross Country season. David Mills has requested to speak the SFTC Board at the August meeting regarding racewalk events in the area. Discussion regarding what SFTC can do to help encourage long-distance races in the area and treat all races fairly. Discussion centered around providing assistance in course certification fees. The board voted to reimburse up to $300 of a course certification fee under the following criteria: 1) race must be 10 miles or more, 2) must be a new race, a one-time recertification, or 10 year renewal, 3) race would be a local race (Board would define "local" at time of request), 4) financial support from SFTC would be dependent on SFTC having funds available, 5) reimbursement for the cost of certification of the course will be paid on completion of the race and 6) the Board will review annually the continuation of this support. Bob Townsend has researched having a club event at a Greeneville Astros game. Cost would be $13 per person. Included in the price is buffet dinner before the game, plus the cost of a ticket for the game. Bob will research dates and send an email blast to SFTC to plan the event. David Fox will also check on possibility of doing the same for a KMets game. The board voted to spend up to $200 for a baseball event, or $5 per person. Members will be responsible for remainder of cost. The board discussed the pros and cons of the Bays Mountain Trail Run being SFTC owned. No decision reached. Mark Skelton will discuss with Bays Mountain staff.

Aug 3rd, 2006 6:30pm - Eastman Employee Center: Board Members present: Mark Skelton, Rob Schoborg, Bob Townsend, David Sullivan, Nicole and Jason Goodman, Allison and Steve Pastorek, David and Brenda Fox, Bobby Baker. Board Members absent: Matthew Studholme, Eric Fields. Minutes from the July board Meeting were reviewed and approved by the Board. The board thanked Bob Townsend for organizing the club outing at the Greeneville Astros game.

The board acknowledged that in July an email vote was held. The board voted to offer the course reimbursement fee (see July meeting minutes) to the new BAE race in November. Eric Fields had emailed a motion suggesting that $10,000 of club money be placed in a high-yield 8-12mo CD. The motion was passed. The board was reminded that elections are coming up and nominations are needed. The President-elect position is the only opening this year.

David Mills brought a concern to the board that the area doesn't have enough competition racewalks. David M. asked if the board would support his efforts to add racewalks to some area races. The board assured David M. that the club supports this need and that the club would offer the same services and equipment that are offered to area running races (at the normal fee). The board reminded David M. that SFTC doesn't own most of the races in the area, and therefore cannot directly cause a racewalk to be added. David M. will need to work directly with the race organizers if a racewalk is to be added.

The board discussed a suggestion raised by David Fox whereby liaisons would be paid a flat fee for each race worked to cover their time, effort, and gas. The suggested amount was $50 and was meant to increase the number of liaisons. The club currently has 2 upcoming races without liaisons: BAE and Bays Mtn Trail. In addition, the Apple Festival race has already been disengaged by SFTC because the club had no liaison to coordinate the race. The concept was not approved as some board members felt that all club effort must stay voluntary. Steve Pastorek offered to liaison the BAE race.

A suggestion was made that we need to have more people familiar with the Runscore software. Currently David Fox and Rob Schoborg are the only people managing races with Runscore. Rob manages the National Racewalk and David manages Blue Plum, Surgoinsville, Firecracker, Phipps Bend (plus Eastman, but that race doesn't hire SFTC). It was decided that the Sep. board meeting be used as a Runscore training session. David will provide the training. The Sep. meeting will be 1 week later than normal to avoid a conflict with the Eastman Road Race preparations.

Sep. 14th, 2006 6:30pm - Eastman Employee Center: Board Members present: Mark Skelton, Bob Townsend, David Sullivan, Nicole and Jason Goodman, Allison and Steve Pastorek, Eric Fields, David and Brenda Fox. Board Members absent: Bobby Baker, Rob Schoborg. Minutes from the August, 2006, Board Meeting were not available. Will be read and approved at next meeting. Information: Jason and Nicole Goodman reported that the SFTC Booth at the Eastman Road Race netted 6 new members and 2 new families for SFTC.

Solicitations for hiring SFTC: O. Winston Link (conflicts with Rhythm and Roots) - no liaison available. Denied. Will rent instead. Up & At'em 5K in JC - no liaison available. Denied. Charles Harmon will rent instead.

At the October, 2006, meeting, envelopes will be stuffed for balloting and membership renewal. President-elect is the only open 2007 position on the SFTC Board. Bob Townsend will solicit for nominations from the club. The Board was asked to send nominations to David Fox or Bob Townsend. Superlative awards are Best T-shirt, Race of the Year, Most Improved Runner (Male and Female), Outstanding High School Runner (Male and Female). Nominations should be sent to David Fox or Bob Townsend. Mr. and Ms. Mileage will be tallied by Matthew Studholme. Volunteer points will be tallied by David Fox.

Information: Rob Schoborg almost has draft ready for Scholarship and Grant Programs. If it is ready by the next meeting, the Board may be able to vote on the programs. Information: Steve Pastorek states the BAE courses have been certified. Jason and Nicole Goodman will be working the finish line at this race.

Oct. 6th, 2006 6:30pm - Eastman Employee Center: Board Members present: David Sullivan, Steve and Alison Pastorek, Nicole and Jason Goodman, Mark Skelton, Bob Townsend, Rob Schoborg, Matthew Studholme, Brenda and David Fox. Board Members absent: Eric Fields, Bobby Baker. Minutes from the Aug and Sep board meeting were reviewed and approved.

Solicitations for hiring SFTC: Heritage Days 10K in Rogersville - no liaison available. Denied. Will rent instead. Information: David Fox states that Oscar Wagner will be helping with the Munsey Up & At'em 5K & Wellness Walk. Oscar will not be working as a representative of SFTC, but as an independent entity. The race will take place on October 14. The Munsey race has shown an interest in renting equipment, as has the Oct 14 Heritage Days race in Rogersville.

As of October 5, there have been no nominations received for the position of president-elect for the year 2007. Bob Townsend will submit another email blast to SFTC members. If no nominations are received, the Board will decide how to handle the situation at the November meeting. As an aside to an earlier discussion concerning payment of liaisons for races: David Fox noted that the Board has set a precedent in the past by paying members for extraordinary efforts, i.e., course measurement.

A John Sevier Middle School running program has asked the board about the possibility of applying for a grant. The running program states that their goal is for the middle school kids to run a half marathon. Several board members spoke out against children of that age being encouraged to run that distance. Motion (by Mark Skelton, 2nd by Rob Schoborg): to recommend to the JSMS running program that in order to solicit SFTC support/grant money that they lessen the goal distance for their program. Motion was passed. David Fox will pass along the board's comments to JSMS running program organizers.

Information: Nicole will invite Ani Boyd to November Board Meeting. Ani and Nicole are in the process of starting a "Girls on the Run" program locally. Ani will be coming to give information to the board about the program. Information: Matthew Studholme states that Debbie Blankenship, director of Animal Chase, has told Matthew that their payment check for the Animal Chase race to SFTC has not cleared the bank. David Fox asked Matthew to send Eric Fields, treasurer, an email to check on this.

At the November Board meeting, Matthew Studholme would like to review and possibly tighten the criteria for a King/Queen race, and also review the schedule for the upcoming year. Matthew suggests that some possible additions to the King/Queen series could be the Heritage Days 10K and the BAE Half Marathon, both of which have certified courses.

Information from Matthew Studholme: The SFTC "Jones Counter" course-measuring device is broken. A new one would cost approximately $80 - $85. The Board authorized Matthew to order a new one, and the club will reimburse him for the cost. Information from Mark Skelton: The Bays Mountain Trail Run had 70 finishers in its inaugural year. Mark would like to have the Board consider designating the 2007 Bays Mountain Trail Run as a King/Queen race to show its support of the quality of the race. Motion (by Matthew Studholme, second by Rob Schoborg): That the Bays Mountain Trail Run be included in the King/Queen series for 2007. Motion was passed. Information from Nicole Goodman: Jason Goodman will be taking over as SFTC Treasurer from Eric Fields at the end of 2006. Information and recommendation from Jason and Nicole Goodman: the Goodmans hosted an SFTC booth at the Race for the Cure on October 1, in Kingsport. Due to the atmosphere of this race (more of a festival than a race), they did not have a lot of business, and recommend that SFTC not have a booth at this race in the future.

Discussion on Grant Program: Rob Schoborg is still working on verbage and would like for all Board members to review the pdf document and send him any comments/input/ changes to work into his document.

The board acknowledges the following motions and voted taken via email over the past month: 1 - Should SFTC sponsor the Bristol Cross meet with a $500 donation - Board voted YES. 2 - Should normal 1-point volunteer points be doubled for races 10M and longer? - Board voted YES. 3 - If (2) is passed, should the rule be retroactive for 2006? - Board voted YES.

Nov. 2nd, 2006 6:30pm - Eastman Employee Center: Board Members present: David Sullivan, Steve and Alison Pastorek, Nicole and Jason Goodman, Mark Skelton, Bob Townsend, Rob Schoborg, Eric Fields, Matthew Studholme, Brenda and David Fox. Guests: Ani Boyd (Girls on the Run). Board Members absent: Bobby Baker. Minutes from the Oct board meeting were reviewed and approved.

Ani Boyd presented information about Girls On The Run (GOTR), a national organization designed to teach and support young girls (grades 3-5) on self-respect and healthy living. 12 week program with 24 sessions of 1 hour each culminates in a 5K run in the area. Coaches go through a background check and receive training prior to working with the girls. The board voted to allow GOTR to submit a draft grant-application form to SFTC. The grant program is not fully defined yet but this will give the board a chance to test the process and documentation.

The Road Warriors running program based at John Sevier MS is interested in receiving a grant from SFTC. David Fox has shared the board's concerns regarding the half-marathon distance of that program. Brian Buckner (regional training coach for youth) has backed SFTC on that position. David told Jenny Jensen that she can visit a future SFTC board meeting to discuss the program.

The SFTC Treasurer position is now passing from Eric Fields to Jason Goodman. Eric and Jason are coordinating the switch. A new key has been created for the SFTC PO box. This key has been assigned to Frank Kibler for picking up VA Creeper Marathon entry forms. There are currently 4 keys: President (David), Membership (Nicole), Treasurer (Jason), and VCM (Frank). David will pass his key to 2007 president Steve Pastorek by the end of the year.

The board discussed the growing trend of running with headphones and all voiced concern that this poses safety hazards for runners. SFTC board discourages runners from wearing headphones while running on public streets when traffic could be a problem.

David Fox has been contacted by InjuredRunner.com which is interested in sharing links and info with our club. Several board members have visited the site and found it to be useful. David will arrange for a free DVD to be used as an SFTC door prize. Rob will contact the site owner for articles to be included in the SFTC Split Times.

A new race is organizing in Bristol in the May-June timeframe, possibly longer than a 5K distance. Matthew Studholme has been talking with Charlie Rowe about hiring SFTC to manage he finish line. Matthew offered to act as SFTC liaison. The board voted and approved the engagement.

Mark Skelton reports that CASA in Rogersville is interested in hiring the club for a race in April-May. No details are known yet. Steve Pastorek is scheduled to take over the SFTC presidency in January. The Jan meeting will be held at Boones Creek Christian Church (exit 38 near Cracker Barrel).

Matthew led discussion regarding proposed changes to the 2007 King/Queen competition. The following motions were passed regarding the KQ scoring and awards (but are not requirements of KQ races themselves): 1) youngest KQ age group will be 15-19, which ties nicely with the 14yr limit in KFOM; 2) top KQ age group will be 75 & up; 3) KQ Masters division will be tabulated as 40-49 yrs and 4) KQ Grandmasters will be tabulated as 50 & up. Changes to the following King/Queen *race* requirements were passed: 1) Results must be submitted to SFTC within 2 wks of race. Matthew will remind race once. 2) Race must provide both overall and complete age-group results. 3) Race must be posted on the SFTC website 3 months prior to race date. 4) Race must be open to both genders. 5) Race awards must offer overall, masters, and grandmasters categories. 6) Race awards age groups should span at least from 19 yrs to 60 yrs in 5yr or 10yr age groups (board recommends 5yr). 7) Race awards age groups should be offered at least 3 deep. 8) Course conditions should be safe for runners. 9) The SFTC board reserves the right to remove KQ status if a race does not meet any of these basic criteria for a quality race. The board voted to accept Keep Greeneville Beautiful 5K as a King/Queen race in 2007. Rob Schoborg reported that the Roan Mountain 10K race had 71 runners and made a net profit of approx. $100.

Jan. 4th, 2007 6:30pm - Eastman Employee Center: Board Members present: David Sullivan, Mark Skelton, Jason Goodman, Steve Pastorek, David & Brenda Fox, Matthew & Maria Studholme. Guests: Allison Pastorek, Nicole Goodman, Bob Townsend, Rhonda Denham, Wendy Weidner, Barbara Bogard, Joe Canino, Lyons Canino, and Christina Giatroplulos. Minutes from the November 2006 meeting were approved.

November and December email votes: King & Queen issues: 1 - omit Apple Festival race from New Year's Day t-shirt; 2 - omit Stickleyville race from New Year's Day t-shirt; 3 - Add Justin Foundation race to King & Queen schedule; 4 - Add BAE Half Marathon to King & Queen schedule. Accepted and honored Grant request from Girls on the Run. Matthew Studholme agreed to become president-elect for 2007. Maria Studholme agreed to complete Matthew's term as Bristol area rep.

Long Distance Series: (Steve Pastorek for Oscar Wagner). Discussion as to whether to change some of the rules for the Long Distance Series of races, or to omit program. Strong support for keeping LDS. Changes to be made: 1 - No change for Long Distance Series program, but participants must be Club members. 2 - Long Distance Series will include only club owned or King & Queen Races. 3 - Races must be 10 miles or longer. 4 - Deadline for notification - April 1. Wendy Weidner has volunteered to take over management of the LDS from Oscar Wagner if Oscar is wanting to relinquish the job. Steve Pastorek will speak to Oscar regarding that change. Jason Goodman stated that one person had already sent in money for the LDS program. Jason will reimburse that money based on changes made to program.

Treasurer's Report (Jason Goodman): Total Current Assets: $20,247.37. Net Income for 2006 was $4,103.65. Jason plans to look into finding a checking and savings account for the club which will earn more interest on accounts, and not have a checking fee.

Steve Pastorek will speak to Rob Schoborg about finalizing Grant/Scholarship Program

Jingle Bell 5K: Information from Jason & Nicole Goodman regarding concerns about course safety and improvement opportunities for Jingle Bell 5K in 2007. The race grew quite a bit in 2006, and police and road guard coverage was not adequate for number of runners. Division of responsibilities for club and race director was not equitable in 2006. Jason & Nicole will work with race director to remedy these issues for 2007.

Issue: Headphones and strollers in races are not covered by SFTC's insurance policy. David Fox will modify the online race form to add these restrictions. Race directors need to make sure race participants are told of no headphones and no stroller restrictions.

Information (Steve Pastorek): Richard Hulse is trying to organize a Half Marathon in Johnson City to support suicide awareness. Mr. Hulse has approached a couple of club members to discuss the possibility of a race.

War Party 10K (Bob Townsend): Date is February 3. Bob needs volunteers. Also, a 5K Fitness Walk has been added to the race. The Fitness Walk will be directed by David Mills.

Equipment Report (David Fox): The club has billed $5400 in 2006 for equipment rental. Some minor repairs were made to some of the mile markers. Timers are all in good shape at this point. Storing equipment at Tandy Fleming's shop is working well. David Fox will purchase some additional Rubbermaid containers to store and transport equipment.

Membership Report (Nicole Goodman): 35 new memberships were acquired at the New Year's Day Run. There are 300 current members of the SFTC and 162 families.

Ideas for Club Social events: Steve asked all Board Members to brainstorm ideas for club social events and bring ideas to the next meeting.

From Wendy Weidner & Rhonda Denham: Is there a possibility of SFTC having running suits or shirts that have the club logo on them to wear to out of town races and events? The Board will discuss at next meeting.
