Dear MBA Aspirant,
Thank you for considering SPJIMR for this vital milestone of your life. Getting into the right
B-school is paramount. While this Brochure will provide you with enough information about
SPJIMR, let me share with you the fundamentals that make SPJIMR what it is. It is likely that
you have selected SPJIMR because of its consistent rank amongst the top ten B-schools in
India. It is possible that superior placement have attracted your attention. Not that these
facts are not important, but what is more relevant is that we are unique in several respects.
Our endeavour is to ensure that the SPJIMR experience is a significant long-term value
addition to an individual's career, indeed his/her entire life, and is not merely placement as
an end in itself. This more lasting objective calls for resolving three contradictions that we
believe we have successfully addressed.
A synthesis of western values of efficiency - a concern for ends, and eastern values and
ethos – an equal concern for means.
Co-existence of collaborative and competitive modes - striving for individual excellence
and yet reinforcing the 'group culture' through daily activities.
Commitment to material advancement - with sensitivity to distributive-justice.
Our selection process depends to a large extent on the softer skills of a person, and not
merely on IQ or for that matter, work experience. To us while a sharp mind is important,
more so is a curious and sensitive one, backed by rich values and integrity. Hence
selection has a lot to do with interviews, besides “CAT scores” and other facts sought
through application forms.
Finally the Institute is an integrated human organism of faculty, administration, and student
participants actively involved in administration and developing the Institute towards
attaining higher levels of excellence. This is a constant ongoing exercise and that's what
the SPJIMR experience is all about.
This Institute is what it is today because of students as much as anything else. If you concur
with the above, let us explore the possibility of being together. Good luck for your future
plans.

About SPJIMR
S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) is a
constituent unit of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, which was founded
in 1938 by the then Kulpati Dr. K.M. Munshi and 53 other eminent
professionals. Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is registered under the Societies
Registration Act XXI of 1860 and the Bombay Public Trust Act 1950. It is
a trust of repute and eminence and is universally recognized for its
educational as well as cultural activities.
SPJIMR grew rapidly in eminence from one of the three B-schools in the
country in 1981 to one of the top ten B-schools in the country by 1994-
1995. Since then, it has continued to retain this position during the last
the last decade.
The bold move to disaffiliate SPJIMR from the then Bombay University
to have freedom in course curriculum, pedagogic innovations and
pioneering programmers in under managed sectors was a beginning of
its journey to achieve the mandate it has given itself in terms of unique
innovative and distinct path in management education
SPJIMR recognizes its twin roles as a responsible member of Bharatiya
Vidya Bhavan and responsive member of the Indian society at large and
looks at itself in a wider context 'beyond MBA' institution by engaging
itself in socially relevant segments of the Indian society.
In all its activities, SPJIMR emphasizes the twin objectives of 'Influencing
Practice' and 'Promoting Value-based Growth' SPJIMR will attempt to
influence organizations through its participants from various programs /
activities, thus acquiring recognition as an influential member in Indian
society in the field of management education.
Today, SPJIMR has to its credit five centers with multifarious activities,
two-year full time Post Graduate Diploma in Management, a 11 month
full time post graduate program for experienced professionals and a few
continuing executive education programmes.
SPJIMR self financed management institute with entrepreneurial agility,
personal freedom with professional accountability and corporatized
culture, structure and processes. “A hundred times everyday I
remind myself that my inner and
outer life depend on the labors of
other men, living and dead. And
that I must exert myself in order
to give in the same measure that
I have received and am still
receiving.”
- Albert Einstein

“The essential spring of all
growth is within you. All that
you can get from without is some
food - material or spiritual- with
which to build your organism,
and some stimulus to spur you to
activity. What is really essential
in your development, you must
do for yourself.”
- Alfred North Whitehead

Curriculum par excellence
The flagship PGDM program at SPJIMR is designed around courses which
strengthen the knowledge, skills and attitude essential for a successful
manager. These courses have been inspired from leading western business
schools like Harvard, MIT and Stanford and are regularly benchmarked against
the top business schools in the country. The content is frequently updated to
meet the best global standards and demands of the industry. Courses are
piloted by top-notch faculty, people for whom their profession is their passion.
Courses like ADMAP (Assessment & Development of Managerial
&Administrative Potential) are designed to inculcate administrative skills in the
participants, the budding managers, through practice in an 'action learning
laboratory' setting. Participants contribute to various institution processes like
admissions, benchmarking of course structure, public relations, instilling
entrepreneurial instincts, organizing competitions, placements and many
more by being a part of numerous committees. A great emphasis is laid on
sensitizing participants to the social needs and unique initiatives such as
DOCC (Development of Corporate Citizenship) and Abhudaya form the pillars
to help attain this goal.
The pedagogy is a mix of lectures, classroom discussions, peer learning, case
studies, simulations, project work ,group studies and participation in national
and international events and competitions.. Various case studies from the best
B-schools like Harvard are taken up for discussions giving a realistic picture to
the theoretical inputs. A wide array of subjects leads to the participant
becoming proficient in not only his / her specialization but also other areas of
importance like finance, entrepreneurship, operations and management,
information technology, catering to the needs of business environment.
SPJIMR uses a grading system in all its evaluation methods comprising
quizzes, assignments, case analyses, project work, internships, mid-terms and
comprehensive examinations.
We start-off with a one month foundation course which deals with some basic
fundamentals of subjects taken-up in the subsequent months. The first year
curriculum aims at strengthening the fundamentals in all areas of functional
management and provides a holistic perspective of general management. The
second year curriculum is based on a chosen area of specialization and is
customized to the participant's career aspirations and industry requirements.
At SPJIMR, equal emphasis is laid on soft skills. Proper communication and
behavioral tendencies are groomed through open discussions and working in
groups. Simulations form a major part of the curriculum giving an exact feel of
the business environment. Care is taken to see that the course is in line with the
values of the Institute, as is evident from the importance attached to courses
like Business Ethics and Gita Shibir, which relates management with the
Bhagvad Gita.
Management by objectives is the central key to all learning; each subject seeks
to fulfill a certain objective as the participant is groomed for a successful
management career.

Beyond Class Room Learning
A proactive and formally planned programme for developing attitudes and skills-completing the three aspects of management capability
development has been firmly institutionalized within SPJIMR's beyond classroom curriculum through a variety of pedagogical innovations.
Abhyudaya (Growing Together)
Abhyudaya program is a pedagogic innovation aimed at preparing PGDM participants of
SPJIMR for top management roles, as part of the curriculum. It aims at changing the attitude of
the participants from the self-centred approach to a service orientation.
The Program requires PGDM participants to mentor underprivileged children (whom we call
'Sitaras') dwelling in slums and studying in BMC Schools, to bring about a holistic development
of the Sitaras. In turn it teaches the MBA Students lessons of life by sensitizing them towards
urban poverty and encouraging them to do their bit for the society and also impart Leadership &
Mentorship Skills through experiential learning.
t r a n s f o r m
11
ADMAP ( )
DOCC (Development of Corporate Citizenship)
Assessment & Development of Managerial & Administrative Potential
This is an indigenously developed initiative of S.P. Jain where the participants choose for either an institute committee to work on during first year of their
program. It is learning administration by doing, by getting things done. This
presupposes working in a team with people of varying individual goals but
working towards a common organizational purpose. It acts as a laboratory to test
the theories. The outcome is a rich learning experience of managing people,
resources and systems.
DOCC was initiated at SPJIMR with a view to bring management education closer
to reality in the Indian context. Our aim is to inculcate attitudes and values in future
managers by sensitizing the participants to the realities of the under-privileged. It
also helps the NGO sector to strengthen their management by improving
effectiveness and efficiency through seminars, workshops and publications.
Every participant undertakes a project with any organization working in the social
sector, for e.g. NGOs the Government of India schemes, for a period of 6 weeks at
the end of first year. Projects over the years have spanned sectors like primary
education, healthcare, information systems in rural areas etc.
Autumn Project
PG Lab (Personal Growth)
The second year curriculum provides a sharper focus, allowing customization to an individual's specific career aspirations through the concept of
autumn projects. Under this concept, the candidates work on live projects with the corporate for a period of 8 weeks during the 2nd year after completing
one trimester of their specialization. The autumn project includes domestic as well as international internships. It gives them an exposure to real life
organizational situations, drawing parallels between management theory and
practice. It also helps them to select a specific industry or sector to work with in
the future.
Our participants, armed with the maturity and experience, gained from the
rigorous curriculum and experiential learning process, have richly contributed to
the organizations in terms of conceptual inputs
Believing in innovative pedagogical innovations, SPJIMR conducts the Personal
Growth Lab (PG Lab) that strives for experiential and lifelong learning for the
PGDM participants. The PG Lab is designed to make participants understand
themselves, their strengths, attitudes and personality through various activities,
that includes ice-breaker events, group tasks, team building games, trekking
etc., so as to make the participants appreciate team dynamics thereby learn the
skills needed for effective and synergetic team work.
Anandwan (The Age of Innocence)
Anandwan is a noble initiative, started by Baba Amte, to treat and rehabilitate
leprosy victims from the disadvantaged sections of society. Today it is not just a
shelter for these patients, but serves the livelihood of 3500 people, serving the
blind, deaf and dumb. It is a self-sufficient village with people engaged in more
than 100 different occupations. All they need from outside is oil, petrol, salt and
sugar. Year after year, Anandwan has been inviting the students of SPJIMR,
silently though, through the special bonding both the organizations fondly share.
It is through these unique initiatives taken up by the Institute that makes SPJIMR a
premier Management School.
Gita Shibir (Management by Gita)
This is another unique experience at SPJIMR. It's a course in which participants and faculty conducts a series of discussions on religious scriptures and
their relevance with the current management thinking. The participants learn how the concept of dharma can be applied to our daily lives as well as the
corporate world. Such discussions, embedded with discourses from renowned gurus, broaden the vision of participants and enables them to appreciate
eastern ethos.12

Difficulty is an excuse history never accepts. While much has been speculated about the job scenario in today's challenging times and its impact on the
exalted histories of B-school placements, SPJIMR is creating a unique mark by crafting what seems like a perfect culmination of its PGDM course.
With the global economy still recovering from the recession, the institute ensured a successful placement for the PGDM class of 2011 with the placements
better than 2008 levels (the boom year), garnering support from its influential alumni network and making use of its relationship with over 1200
companies.
76 companies visited the campus giving 242 offers to the 175 participants in PGDM Class of 2011, with 17 of these companies being
first-time recruiters.

the campus for the first time offering roles for the students with operation majors.
The institute believes that a diversified participant profile ensured by its unique admission process provides rich talent for companies to recruit at lateral
as well as entry level managerial positions. 93 pre-placement offers were made to the participants on account of the Autumns Internships. The placement
season also saw participants bagging foreign offers in the areas of consulting and financial sector. One student deferred participating in placements to
explore his own venture.
With the improved economic conditions, Students benefited the most with the placement springing back to even better levels than for the class of 2008,

Ojas which means luster and shine in Sanskrit brings the campus alive in the month of December. It is a congregation of diverse management and cultural events, involving participation of the country's best brains. It is an event that stands for sheer fun, talent and the germination of a rich pool of ideas and thoughts.
The battle for power is on – it's the ultimate fight to reach the top. It is the clash of the titans – only the smartest, the wittiest, the craziest and the sharpest mind wins. In this war, surviving is the matter. You pit your skills against the best minds from colleges across the country and hold a chance to emerge as the Chosen one.
Dream merchants is a mega event conducted under the banner of Ojas 3.0 where you can scan the horizon to determine how business could have the same kind of prospects & standards as you do so that you can cooperate with them in joint marketing and advertising efforts.
“We all have big chances in our lives that are more or less a second chance”. The second innings is an event that would challenge the brightest marketing minds in the best B- schools of the country. The event is based on redesigning a launch campaign for products which could not make their mark in the minds of the Indian consumer.

Started 7 years back as a voluntary non-classroom initiative it has almost become a way of life at SPJIMR today. GASP (Guild of Actors@SP) was initiated under the aegis of the ADMAP (Assessment and Development of Managerial and Administrative Potential) Program in the year 2003. This confluence of theatre and management is a platform where participants use theatre to put to use the various
management and administrative principles they learn during the course. As the years have progressed, GASP has become an expression of SPJIMR's creative and theatrical identity. Planned, driven and executed entirely by students, it is an annual event where the new PGDM batch displays its mettle at conducting and acting in a full play staged at the SPJIMR auditorium for all its family members.
SPRINT is the Annual National Inter B-School sporting extravaganza at SPJIMR that showcases a grand show of some of the best sporting activities at a national level, by the future managers. It was a part of their learning of managing people, operations management, marketing management and also management of finance. Initially conceptualized as a sporting event for leading B-schools in the western zone, SPRINT has established itself as a Pioneer at hosting the best of athletics that the premier B-schools in India have to offer, in the years to come.

different contexts. The Book Club, under the guidance of Prof. Uma Narain,
