June 2011 Spiritual Work “Continue to do your own spiritual work,” — these are words from our Visioning Circle in response to our ongoing question: “How do we facilitate a secure future for Clare’s Well?” You’ve all heard us ask that question before; it was even in a previous issue of The Well. Our Visioning Circle’s response, “Continue to do your own spiritual work,” is powerful. It grounds us in the Spirit of God at work inside and among us here and now. At the time of our founding, 23 years ago this June 9, we received the motto, “Wisdom is deep within; drink from your own well.” Somehow it was clear from day-one that Clare’s Well was to be a place for guests to come to pray, enjoy solitude in nature, re-focus and re-engage their own souls. While it is tempting to over-reach when we receive many catalogues of programs offered by other facilities, we know our call is to simple presence and hospitality. I am reminded of our friend, Basil’s, words: “Repetition. Repetition.” One who seeks God’s will must focus and “practice, practice, practice,” he said. Prepare meals. Prepare meals. Wash dishes. Wash dishes. Daily prayer and a spiritual practice of faith- ful welcoming are not optional for our growth and guidance. Pursuing easy answers in a potpourri of spirituality won’t bear fruit. Why do we keep asking, “What can we do to be sure Clare’s Well continues when some day we can no longer do the work?” “What is ours to do?” It is ours to drink from this Well ourselves while we tend it for others. We don’t know if we are closer to an answer to our question. The future is not within our reach. What is within our reach is a Well of grace, drinking from it, listen- ing for guidance. What is spiritual work? It involves a practice of staying in the present moment. God said, “I am,” not “I was,” or “I will be.” God continues to touch hearts to move people where they never thought they would be called to go. We believe God is calling someone to someday help maintain this Well. Until it becomes clear who that is, we will focus on what is ours to do today. We will do our spiritual work. Sister Jan Kilian
