I. The stench affects our reaction to our service to
Christ
(Joh 13:4-5) He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a
towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to
wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was
girded.

II. The stench affects our relationship with Christ
(Joh 13:6-10) Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him,
What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt
never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth
not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
A. The PARTITION Between
Christ and his
Disciples
(1Jn 1:7-9) But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light,
we have fellowship one with another, and the blood
of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we
say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the
truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is
faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

agreed?

B. The PROCESS of being clean
(Eph 5:25) Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for
it;
(Eph 5:26) That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the
washing of water by the word,
(Eph 5:27) That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or
any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
(Psa 119:9) Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to
thy word.
(Heb 10:22) Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance
of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil
conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
III. The stench is not just relegated to the feet for
some
(Joh 13:10) Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to
wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
(Joh 13:11) For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are
not all clean.
(1Co 6:9-11) Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the
kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor
adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor
extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you:
but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the
Spirit of our God.
(Isa 64:6) But we are all as an unclean thing, and all
our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind,
have taken us away.
(2Co 5:21) For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we
might be made the righteousness of God in
him.
IV. The stench affects our rapport with other
Christians
(Joh 13:12-17) So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have
done to you? Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and
Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given
you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The
servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know
these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
A. Our fellowship POINTS to the Savior
(Joh 13:35) By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if
ye have love one to another.
(1Jn 1:3) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto
you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the
Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
(1Jn 4:20) If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is
a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath
not seen?
(1Jn 4:21) And this commandment have we from
him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
B. Our fellowship is a
PRECONDITIONED by God
(Gal 6:1-3) Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which
are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. For if a man think himself to be something,
when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
