His girlfriend was allowed to leave the scene as she thought ole boy lived in the subdivision. • Deputies arrived at a Meldrim residence where the homeowner pointed out the intoxicated female hanging out in his driveway. On the trip to jail, the woman began talking to people who weren’t there, and began looking for her shoes when she hadn’t been wearing any in the first place. Around 7am, the railroad maintenance man told Deputies that he found that someone had ridden up on a four wheeler and removed the controls that regulate the crossing arms at the Longbridge Road railroad crossing, leaving them in the down position obstructing traffic. She’s worried that her dogs will be hurt because of this. The Deputy then questioned her about her dogs being unrestrained. She responded that that wasn’t an issue because they were “on my property!” The Deputy pointed out that the County Ordinance says it’s a violation to have any unrestrained pet on your property, and that it could be dangerous for her pets with no fence in her yard to keep them from the street where they could be endangered by traffic. • A woman told Deputies she awoke to find a man sleeping on a couch in her shed. The unique trophy, valued at over $5000 is hand-crafted from billet aluminum and Carolina wal- nut. Humpy’s Heroes is a driver de- velopment program designed by former Lowe’s Motor Speedway president and legendary promoter H.A.(Humpy) Wheeler, in con- junction with NASCAR driver Da- vid Ragan. According to Wheeler, the program “is a comprehensive educational experience preparing young drivers to make the transi- tion from local short-track racing to NASCAR?s big three series.” Along with Wheeler and Ra- gan, an all-star panel (including former championship crew chief and NASCAR competition direc- tor Gary Nelson, former NASCAR, ARCA, and Indy driver and current Rockingham Speedway president Andy Hillenburg, NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace, and other indus- try insiders) judged the ten final- ists “on their driving ability, in- terviewing skills, public speaking, and marketability.” The on-track portions of the pro- gram included time trials in ARCA series cars and Camping World Truck series race trucks at the 1/2- mile Little Rock track adjacent to the famous Rockingham Speedway. Throughout these tests, Andrew was always at or near the top of speed charts. Perhaps more impressive than his speeds was the consistency among lap times that Andrew was able to maintain. There was also a four race “mini-shootout” during the Summer Shootout at Lowes Motor Speedway for the INEX Leg- ends Series during which the par- ticipants were judged during actual race conditions. Andrew made a great first impression by winning the first race of that series with a dramatic pass with two laps to go in the rain-soaked event. Andrew put his dirt-racing skills to good use when the pro- gram visited the Carolina Speed- way for a day of high-powered late model and open-wheel modi- fied dirt track testing. Andrew im- pressed both the instructors and the judges with his car control and fast lap times. During the non-track por- tions of the competition, Andrew was equally as impressive display- ing poise, skill and maturity as he fielded questions from program officials and from special guest re- porter, ESPN?s Shannon Spake. Wheeler had high praise for the young wheel man. “Andrew is a sensational competitor and ready for the ARCA or NASCAR Truck Series now,” said Wheeler, who has helped many young drivers including the late Dale Earnhardt get to the top. “This young man is a tremendous competitor who is very smooth at high speed. He is as good at his age now as was Buddy Baker, Cale Yarborough and Mario Andretti when they were 20.” Andrew was equally pleased with the program. “It was an excel- lent experience working with some of the greats such as Humpy, Andy, and Gary. They are truly amazing people to be associated with. Also, David has been in this sort of po- sition before and could relate to what we were doing.” Andrew continued, saying, “Humpy’s Heroes was probably one of the best things to ever happen to all ten of the drivers involved. Very few drivers have the opportunity to work with the people that we were surrounded by and do the things we were able to do in the amount of time we were given. I believe everyone knew the program was gonna be a success due to the fact of who all was involved, but I per- sonally believe it was better than anyone really anticipated for the group as a whole.” In addition to the trophy, An- drew - along with Humpy Wheeler - will appear on SpeedTV’s Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain for an extended segment. But that’s not all folks. There can be no doubt that the most anticipated moment of the entire competition will be realized when Andrew is given an official test in a Sprint Cup car with one of NASCAR’s top teams. “I am extremely excited to go do the Cup testing and make an appearance on Wind Tunnel with Humpy and Dave,” Andrew ex- claimed. When asked for his feelings about the program, now that he has taken this giant step toward his ultimate goal as a NASCAR driver, a thoughtful Andrew re- flected, “It was an honor in itself just being chosen to participate in the Humpy’s Heroes program. Re- ceiving the Golden Wheel Award and all that goes with it definitely ranks among the highest accom- plishments of my racing career and is an honor that will not soon be forgotten. “Effingham’s Best!”

A long summer of extremely intense preparation and fierce com-petition was handsomely rewarded as Andrew Smith was judged the winner of the inaugural Humpy’s Heroes Driver Development Pro-gram during the final round of the competition at the Rockingham Speedway and received the coveted Golden Wheel award. The unique trophy, valued at over $5000 is hand-crafted from billet aluminum and Carolina wal-nut. A win is a win, but how in the heck do you go up by 24 points, then almost lose the freaking game? Georgia Tech has some serious work to do, despite the fact that they climbed one spot in the polls this week and sport a 2-0 record. The Jackets head to south Florida this week to take on an improving Miami team in a second straight

Thursday night game... The Dawgs have to be thinking along those same lines, (a win being a win and all) but how in the heck do you let a very bad South Carolina team put up 37 points on you? Weirdly enough, whatever stan-dards the pollsters used with Tech didn’t apply to UGA, who dropped to number 23 in the AP poll despite

the win. Does that mean Clemson is a better team than USC? It won’t get any easier this week as UGA heads west to take on Arkan-sas... Speaking of polls and such, I’m glad we’re done with that ridiculous schedule of college football games all the way through Monday. It was bad enough they started playing games on Friday nights- taking away from the traditional night of high school football- but running games all the way through Monday was just nonsense. Particularly with the games that were scheduled. Yawn. That meant the polls weren’t re-leased on Sunday after week one (what with week one not being over and all) so I had a hard time ridicul-ing the numbers. Inconsiderate poll voters... Apropos of nothing, I was in Ru-San’s Tuesday night drop off base-ball tickets for Miki & Happyman to meet us at the game Thursday and I’d almost swear Samuel L. Jackson was sitting at the sushi bar. And, man- was he pimped out. He had on a shiny purplish suit, gold chains and a pork-pie hat in a yellow that’s pretty much unknown in nature. I tried to get a picture, but there was a very large guy sitting next to him, doing most of the talk-ing. Not that I was afraid of the large guy, he just kept blocking my shot. I don’t know if it was actually Jack-son or not, because I didn’t notice him until right before the guys were about to leave, but one of them was dropping “F” bombs left and right (and, for once, that person wasn’t me!)... Atlanta pitcher Javier Vazquez (who- if he’d had any kind of run sup-port this year would have about 18 wins and be one of the front-runners for the Cy Young) was named NL Player of the Week for last week af-ter going 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA and 17 strikeouts. Vazquez’ strikeouts put him over the 200 K mark for the third consecu-tive season and the fifth time in his career... Bust out the Johnny Mathis record again, ‘cause the Braves’ play of late is a clear-cut case of “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late.” How in the world does a team get slapped around by the Reds, then turn around and put beat downs on the Astros and Cardinals (well, maybe not so much the Astros, but they’re better than the Reds)? They’ll probably tease us more this weekend by sweeping the Phillies. Seriously, the Braves need team-wide psychotherapy to get over the schizophrenia they suffer from if they hope to make the playoffs next year. I mean- when the skipper says “it’s going to take a little bit of a mir-acle, but why not”, you just can’t feel good about the team’s chances... South Korean researchers studying sexual attraction have determined that alcohol consumption may im-

pair vision and makes faces appear less clear. The Kyungwoon University study asked adults to each drink a bottle of soju, (Korean booze), then mea-sured the subjects’ vision an hour later when their blood alcohol con-tent was at its highest. Three hours later, the subjects still suffered from impaired vision, and still had trouble with their vision. One of the researchers came to the genius conclusion that the alcohol “increases distortion, so the facial features of the opposite sex appear less clear and may look more attrac-tive” according to the Journal of the Korean Ophthalmic Optics Society. Anybody in a bar could’ve told ‘em that- it’s a phenomenon called beer goggles. At least we have proof that the U.S. government isn’t the only govern-ment willing to fund retarded stud-ies that reach obvious conclusions... Oh, the aforementioned Braves’ game we’re going to will be our first this season. Shelby is a Mets’ fan (it hurts my fingers to type that), and she has a crush on David Wright... A Columbus, Ohio man suspected of robbery was arrested when he re-turned to the scene of the crime- to ask the victim for a date. The 20 year old was one of three men suspected of robbing two people in the parking lot of an apart-ment building, but this genius came back to ask the female victim for a date. The woman recognized the guy immediately and had her cousin call police. That is a serious pair of stones, there. And a great, big-old case of stupid... Four college teams that everyone should have stopped believing the hype about a long time ago: Southern Cal (I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it- rolling through a cream-puff schedule doesn’t make you a good team.) Ohio State (See comments r.e. USC- except that freaking lost to USC!) Notre Dame (All hype, all the time- although, as one of my coworkers said: It was great to watch Lou Holtz squirm after his proclamation on “College Gameday.”) Penn State (Seriously, let us know when you play a good team. Oh, wait- I just checked your schedule- you don’t!) I could go on, but we all know the polls are a joke. By the logic that most pollsters use, BYU and Boise State should be ranked higher. Except, of course, they’re not an East or West Coast, money-making school. Therefore, they’re what’s known as S.O.L... Anybody besides me think the Dis-covery Channel executive that came up with this moronic show “The Colony” should have a foot planted somewhere painful? I mean, does anyone even think this piece o’ poop even qualifies as a “reality” show? The commercials make me want to

hurt the people involved... Shelby’s son John was here last week for a visit. They did the tourist thing, but I only got to join them for World of Coke and the CNN Center tours on Tuesday. Oh yeah, and Dave and Busters. Still, it was good to see him. I think Shelby wanted to slap me upside the head, as I wasn’t all that impressed with CNN. I tried to shut up about it, but TV just isn’t that different from when I worked “in the biz” 20-some-thing years ago. Sure, the equipment is light years beyond what I worked with, but the same pomposity was apparent. Well, that and I accidentally poked her in the eye when I was trying to point something out to her... And GSU appears to be another team that’s vastly overrated- or else South Dakota State is a really, really good team. The Eagles managed just two field goals against a team that hadn’t won it’s opening game in something like five years. It might be a long season in Statesboro... Craig and Amy were here over the Labor Day holiday, but I didn’t really get to hang out with them as much as I’d have liked to, either. They came up to see the Braves game on Sunday, but I ended up having a gig that night and couldn’t join them. Of course, with the way they played against the Reds, that’s probably for the best. Still, it was good to see them, even if it was a brief visit... Man, the Falcons looked good Sun-day, didn’t they? I was hoping for a win, but I certainly wasn’t expecting Atlanta to manhandle the Dolphins the way they did. I mean, that was pretty much complete domination. This week, Atlanta opens up divi-sional play when they host Carolina Sunday afternoon... Shelby wants to give me a flu shot. I’m not real hip on the idea. In fact, I don’t really think it’s going to help. I’m pretty sure- shot or not- if the Korean kid at the end of the block catches a cold- I’m probably going to catch it, too. I’m telling you, I’m a freaking magnet for colds... The Jaguars just can’t beat the Colts. I don’t know what else to say. Jacksonville hosts the Cardinals this weekend... Mike- tell your mom I’m disap-pointed she thinks I sound like Andy Rooney. Especially after your par-ents originally said I sounded like Dick Cheney... And finally, happy birthday Blondie. That’s it for this week. I’ll be back next time with more news, notes, and rumors from the sports world. As always, send your questions, praises, or gripes to [email protected], or via snail mail to: Bean Spouts c/o Spirit Newspapers P.O. Box 33 Pooler, GA 31322. God, bless America.

By C. Edward Wilson Three area teams looking for first win Groves, Effingham County and Bryan County strap on the gear once again this week in search of its first victory of the 2009 sea-son. Groves and Effingham County seem to be in position to wins its first game of the year, while Bryan County will have a hard time tak-ing on a tough Wilcox County team coming in with a 2-1 record. The Rebels of Groves High get a chance to play its first home game of the season against a Wayne County team suffering through three early season losses. The three-headed of-fense of quarterback Chris Cutter, wide receivers Darius Edwards and Richie Wilson will be on display for

the home team. First-year Coach Greg Hunter had high hopes for his team at the beginning of the season and playing at home should give Groves a boost in the arm playing in front of its own crowd. Effingham County will take on Windsor Forest at Saunders Field on the campus of Savannah Coun-try Day on Friday night. The Rebels are in need of a quick fix on offense if they hope to defeat Windsor For-est which opened up Benedictine Military School and lost a close game before being blown out by Valdosta last week by a 55-6 score. Quarterback Donovan Camp-bell, considered to be one of the best in the area, hasn’t gotten a chance to show his offensive prowess and Ef-fingham County may be the elixir needed for the Knights first win.

BY AL CARRELL AND KELLY CARRELL

We take our electrical power for granted many times, and when the lights go out, it’s a real hard-ship. Whether it’s from a hurricane, flood, tornado or some other disas-ter, a generator is fast becoming a standard household appliance. If you are just getting into the game, here are a few things you MUST know. Some generators are meant to power your whole home and will turn on automatically should there be a power outage. But most ho-meowners will choose a portable model just to have one on hand for emergencies. To determine what size generator you need, you should

go around your home and deter-mine which appliances you will be operating should your power go off. You will need to add up the watt-age of each item and then purchase a generator that is sufficient to run these appliances. For example, most homeowners will need refrig-eration, lights and possibly a sump pump. You may have to do without air conditioning, but you’ll live. Your generator needs to be set up outside the house in an area that is not closed up. It’s also a smart idea to install carbon-monoxide detectors inside your home. Although your genera-tor will be running outside, carbon monoxide can drift indoors and build up. The alarm will let you know if you have a problem before

your family gets sick, or worse. Always read and follow your owner’s manual, and never take any risks with your generator. Never hook it up directly to your house-hold electrical supply. This can endanger not just you, but your neighbors as well, as it can feed back through lines that others think are not “hot.” Use sufficient extension cords for your appliances, and never over-work your generator. Plug in the largest energy user first, and then the rest. Take care of maintenance as advised in your owner’s manual to make sure your generator is ready to go when it is needed.

* * *Q: My bathroom vanity has a fake marble top on it. I accidentally chipped a small corner off and am trying to figure out how I can fix this. Can you give me some sugges-tions? -- G.K.A: If you were lucky enough to have saved the chipped-off piece, you can try just gluing it back on with clear epoxy adhesive. If you don’t have the piece, you can go to a crafts store and buy a two-com-ponent casting resin and mix some color into it so that it will match your counter. You may have to build a small form if the chip is on a corner. Sand it smooth when you have finished.

* * *Q: I’ve noticed that I have excess humidity in my house. The bath-rooms are the worst, even though I have exhaust fans that run fine. How do I measure the humidity, and what do I do if I want to get rid of some of it? -- M.W.A: Check a hardware store for a hygrometer, a gauge used to deter-mine the humidity in your home. Most people like to be within the 40-percent-to-50-percent range. You can use a dehumidifier to lower the humidity, if it’s too high. Make sure you do have adequate ventila-tion in your home, attic and base-ment, too.

* * *Clean your wood finishes with a tack rag before applying the final finish to remove all dust from the surface. You can buy them, but you also can make them with our easy-to-follow instructions. Just send your request, along with a self-ad-dressed, stamped envelope, to The Super Handyman at the newspaper, and we will send you instructions on how to make tack rags yourself. For faster instructions, download them off our Web site, www.thesu-perhandyman.com.

* * *Got a question or a handy tip? Send it to The Super Handyman in care of this newspaper, or visit our Web site at www.thesuperhandyman.com. Those of general interest will be used in future columns.

For 1984, Ford Motor Co. re-placed the Ford Fairmont and the Mercury Zephyr with the new front-wheel-drive Ford Tempo and Mercury Topaz. The new cars were similar in design, but the four-door Tempo had rear-quarter windows beyond the rear doors, where the Topaz had none (in “club sedan” style, with less visibility but more privacy in the back seat). Both cars continued a decade until 1994, and were replaced in 1995 by the Ford Contour and the Mercury Mystique. Today, the Tempo, such as the one you see here, is a very afforable car for the beginning collector to start with. The official 2009 value of the car is listed at only $150 in bad con-dition, and up to $4,500 in like-new condition (the most valuable being the four-wheel-drive models). Quoting the 1987 sales catalog: “From the start, its contemporary styling, engineering, economy and product value have made Tempo a success, appealing to a wide spec-trum of buyers in the midsize seg-

ment. “For 1987, new features in-clude All Wheel Drive, a redesigned three-speed automatic transaxle with fluid link converter (FLC) for smoother and quieter opera-tion, and new electronic radios. Power steering is now standard on all models, in addition to power front disc brakes and a ‘high swirl combustion’ (HSC) engine with electronic fuel injection.” The Sport GL featured the Higher Specific Output (HSO) 94-horsepower op-tion, along with either a five-speed manual or a three-speed automatic transmission. The top-line LX had more luxury features.

1984 FORD TEMPOMANY IMPORTANT FEATURES FOUND IN THIS 1984 COMPACT CAR

BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI

Dear Tom and Ray, My 9-year-old son asked me why the speedometer on cars in-dicate speeds much higher than legal driving speeds. If it is illegal to drive 100 mph (or faster), then why indicate that the car can travel that fast in the first place, not to mention the fact that most cars can’t reach these speeds in the first place? I didn’t know the answer, so I thought I’d ask a car company. Toyota wrote back with:

Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. We appre-ciate this opportunity to address your inquiry. Some states within the United States have higher speed limits than other states. We hope you will find this information helpful. Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your in-quiry.

Sincerely,Toyota Customer Experience

Which was a stupid response.

Nissan wrote: Thank you for taking the time to contact Nissan North America, Inc. and allowing us the opportu-nity to read and respond to your e-mail inquiry. All vehicles are designed in this fashion, regardless of make or model. If you are seeking an exact reason as to why vehicles are de-signed this way, no further infor-mation can be provided. I apologize if the response giv-en is not satisfactory. Unfortunate-ly no further information regarding vehicle/speedometer designs can be offered.

Sincerely,Nissan North America, Inc.

An equally dismal response. GM and Ford did not respond at all. Can you help answer this ques-tion? -- Robert

TOM: Hang on a second, Robert. I’m just taking some notes. I think we can use some of those response lines in future columns.

RAY: The answer is marketing, Robert. Most of us drive our cars

between zero and 80 miles per hour. But by placing a 140-mph speedometer right in front of your face, the manufacturer is suggest-ing to you that you COULD go a lot faster.

TOM: Right. It suggests you’re showing admirable restraint by holding this “crouching tiger” to the speed limit.

RAY: That’s an appealing character-istic for most people -- to have way more power than you need.

TOM: It’s like the ads that show SUVs climbing up the sides of city buildings, or blasting through eight feet of snow at 60 mph. Nine-ty-nine percent of people use their SUVs to commute to the office and back. But the image of being able to break out of your mundane life is what sells these vehicles. A 140-mph speedometer works the same way.

RAY: It’s like my bathroom scale. I may use only 160, but it’s good to know I can go up to 350 if I need to!

TOM: I mean, there are some pseu-do-practical reasons for doing this. If a manufacturer makes some cars that go faster than others, it’s easier and cheaper to make one speedom-eter for all their cars. But the top speeds on speedometers are still higher than any of the cars can go, and far higher than anyone is al-lowed to go.

RAY: So we have to conclude it’s a sales tactic, Robert. I apologize if the response given is not satisfac-tory. Unfortunately no further in-formation can be offered.

* * *

Which is cheaper, buying or leas-ing? Should you keep a car forever or dump it after three years, before trouble starts? Find out in Tom and Ray’s pamphlet “Should I Buy, Lease, or Steal My Next Car?” Send $4.75 (check or money order) to Next Car, P.O. Box 536475, Orlan-do, FL 32853-6475.
