by Frances Fronko!!!!! When Pooler resident David M. Gross had 40 small yew-like plants placed in the Newton/Pooler Cem-etery, his intention was to beau-tify the area for everyone, which has been!a place of "nal rest since 1855.! Much to his dismay, how-ever, he arrived one day to "nd that several of them!had been cut down to four inches or less.! ! ! ! “I got real sick in ‘08 and!had my bladder removed because of cancer,” Gross explained.! “I start-ed thinking and went ahead and got my burial plot ready.! I bought two plots that!went right up there against a cyclone fence that’s along someone’s back yard.! The people who sold me the plot said to buy on the ‘high side,’ so I did.! There’s no other plots around it.! I had the plants put it a year ago all up and down the fence on the cemetery side because they’d grow into a beautiful hedge.”! ! ! ! !Gross makes!occasional visits to! the tract to check up on main-tenence.! ! After the neighbors
gave him their go-ahead,! he also installed a black mesh drape on the fence to “give the home own-ers!and cemetery visitors some pri-vacy,”!!!!!!!!!! Gross chose Newton Cemetery, somewhat based on the fact that he built his home near it in 1979.! It was renamed Pooler! Cemetery in 1992, after the city! took it over.! Records show that 272! graves were!counted that year.! “I could’ve walked through the woods to it,” he said.! “It used to be a place where they used to park and smooch, you know,” he laughed.! “You could hunt deer and squirrel even.”!! ! ! ! While Pooler presently is the fastest-growing community in Georgia, the cemetery named af-ter it remains naturally beautiful, studded with live-oak trees, head-stones,! and the #owers of those who remember their families.!!!! As for who cut down the grow-ing plants, the 74-year-old Gross is baf#ed and somewhat concerned.! “Someone might’ve been visiting and didn’t like them there,” he sur-mised.! “I’ve tried to get in touch
with others who have headstones and plots but aren’t dead yet but haven’t been able to reach anyone.! They’re old now and it’s hard to "nd their families.! I just wanted to let them know what I was do-ing.! Or maybe someone! took a swing with a big mower and didn’t
really intend to hurt them, because not all of them are cut down.! I just don’t know.! Either way, I didn’t intend to hurt anyone by planting them.! I just wanted to make it look nicer for everyone.”

By C. Edward Wilson South Ef!ngham in tougher region With Greenbrier and Evans both joining this sub-region, along with Statesboro and Ef"ngham County, this looks to be the most competitive and toughest region in Georgia High School Athletic Asso-ciation softball this season. The Lady Mustangs of South Ef"ngham will have their hands full, but behind the leadership of veteran Coach Chuck Smith, the task at hand is not insurmountable. “We have a lot of leadership and se-niors in key positions,” Smith said earlier this summer. “Our pitching staff had a good earned run average, which will help in close games.”

I know that no one wants to think about it since we are in the sweltering summer, but deer season is just around the corner. South Carolina’s season actually begins in the middle of August. I love to hunt, but I just can’t put myself through those conditions for a deer… unless it is a Pope and Young of course. But I would abso-lutely have to know that he is com-ing to my stand. It seems that deer season has always been tied to the cooler tem-peratures. During the years when the deer were scarce, hunting was almost always associated with Thanksgiving. And back then, the week of Thanksgiving would al-ways bring with it a little snow. My neck of the woods has changed since then. The deer are more plen-tiful but the snow is not. And with the abundance of deer, there has come the abundance of days to hunt as well. I have adapted seem-ingly without notice. It seems that most of my life
has followed this pattern. I have not set out to adapt, but have slow-ly, almost subconsciously, changed to accommodate my new environ-ment. And for the most part, I have kept in step without a fuss. But I’m still not hunting deer in August. Maybe September, but definitely not August. While everything around us changes, there are some things that ought to be steadfast and unmov-able. For those of us who follow Christ, it is Him. The Bible says Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. This means that while everything around us will change, that which is in us, must not. This is crucial in the world we live in. If we build our life on things that change, we will constantly be tossed from one thing to another. But if we build our life on some-thing that is sure and steadfast, we will always be able to go back to the security that it offers. Change is never comfortable, even good change. But to have
something in our life that is both relative and unchangeable is price-less. And that’s what Christ offers. His gift is one that is as old as his-tory itself and yet is as useful today as the latest technology. I know of nothing else that offers the same.
