He pulled the driver over, and noticed the digital scale in the back seat of the car. He called a K-9 to the scene, and the dog alerted to the driver’s side door. The Officer soon located a baggie of cocaine under the driver’s seat, and $750 cash in the center console. Before long, the Officer also found a purple Crown Royal bag with crach cocaine inside. The young man was taken to jail for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. • Shortly before 4am, an Officer was monitoring traffic on Hwy 21 and spotted a silver Chevy Avalanche following very closely behind a blue Caprice. The driver had to hit his brakes to avoid rear- ending the Caprice. The Officer made a traffic stop and soon asked the man if he’d been drinking. Of course, he had. The Officer asked how much, and the man replied “Two or three.” How long ago? “About thirty drinks ago.” Needless to say, he was soon on his way to lock up. • Around 7:30am, an Officer clocked a maroon Malibu at 60mph in the 45mph zone of Hwy 21 and made a traffic stop. He smelled the odor of alcohol coming from the driver, and noticed the man’s eyes were bloodshot and watery. He asked the man if he’d been drinking, and the man said he’d had several drinks around 3am. During the walk and turn, heel to toe test, the man got to the end of the first half, did an about face, and nearly fell down. During the one legged stand test, he began hopping to keep his balance. He was taken to jail for DUI. Officers were conducting business checks at the Days Inn on Dean Forest Road around 1:30am when a brown F 150 pulled into the parking lot. The truck was still moving at a high rate of speed, and when the driver turned, the wheels squealed and lost traction. Then the man didn’t slow down as he passed the Officers! They stopped him and had him submit to a field sobriety test. During the one legged stand test, the man counted “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, eight, eight.” He was taken to jail for DUI Refusal and reckless driving. Great one week, stinking up the joint the next… I can tell you I’m not sad to see John Smoltz getting his butt hand- ed to him with the Red Sux> Going into play Wednesday, he’s 2-4 with a 7.12 ERA… And no, I can’t figure out what the Braves were thinking when they sent Casey Kotchman to Boston in exchange for Adam LaRoche- who they’d shipped off to exile in Pitts- burgh after the 2006 season. LaRoche’s contract is up at the end of the year, while Kotchman would’ve been a Brave through next season. Look for Barbaro Canizares to get a chance at the job next spring, and for Freddie Free- man to get a longer look. Freeman is projected to be the Braves’ first baseman of the future- and has outstanding numbers at AA Mississippi. Freeman lacks the power the Braves are supposedly looking for, though, with just eight home runs in 98 games. Canizares has 11 in 58 games (none while playing for the big Braves in five contests). Since the team picked up LaRoche to “add power to the line-up,” it doesn’t really make sense (to me, anyway) that Freeman is their first choice at first base. For all they‘ve accom- plished, they could‘ve just held on to Swingin‘ Scott Thorman… James Guidry, regional director of the Arena Football League Play- ers’ Association, told The Associ- ated Press Tuesday that it “seems to be inevitable at this point” that the AFL will announce it’s shutting down for good some time soon. The league suspended play for the 2009 season, but owners had hoped they would return in 2010. They’ve been without a commis- sioner since David Baker resigned two days before the 2008 Arena Bowl. Owners never looked for a replacement. That’s a shame, too- because the AFL was a lot of fun to watch- on TV, anyway. The prices were pretty freaking high (at least, they were for Georgia Force tickets) to watch a lacrosse/football/hockey hybrid, no matter how much fun it was, though. I mean, I lived less than a mile from Philips Arena and never went to a game. The one time I looked, I think the cheapest ticket was $40. For $15 more, you can get seats to a Falcons’ game- albeit upper deck seating. I’ll miss the AFL. Then again, I missed the USFL for a while, too… Shelby and I were concert-going fools last week, checking out Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Bob Dylan Thursday, then wrapping up the weekend with Pat Benatar and Blondie. Opening act The Wiyos featured a lead singer who was prancing around in the crowd before the show. And I DO mean prancing. As much as I wanted to punch him (I‘ve never been a fan of preten- sion- the main reason I‘ve never cared about seeing R.E.M. since they hit the “big time”), the band was as good as a Dixieland-Blues- Americana band from New York could be. Willie Nelson played like he was in a hurry to go somewhere, only slowing down marginally- for “Al- ways On My Mind” and “Georgia.” He seemed to be having a good time, though- and he’s a heck of a guitar player. He’s had years to practice, but I figured he spent most of the years, um, well, stoned. Mellencamp seemed to be having the best time of all the performers, and the crowd was feeding off of his energy. They really got to cheer- ing when he mentioned he’d been in a “a Baptist church down in Sa- vannah” the week before to record a song. Dylan- well, I still think Dylan is one of the greatest lyricists of the rock era. And I recognized most of the songs he played, short of the three or four new ones (Shelby has the album, though). I just really couldn’t understand most of what he was saying. In fact, I don’t think Dylan understands most of what he’s saying most of the time. Sunday night’s Pat Benatar/ Blondie bill was rocking time, too. Well, the two headline acts were, anyway. The opening act- The Donnas- are lame: punk-rock, Ra- mones clone, wanna-be’s. Or may- be I just “don’t get” them. What- ever. It rained for about 45 minutes before Pat Benatar finally came on. Shelby and I hung out under some trees- near the adult beverages (of course), where Julie and Mike met us (lucky them, they missed The Donnas) and went to have a seat once Benatar came on. Benatar and her band were really tight- and talk about having a good time: She laughed, told stories- and even joked about her career, calling “Invincible” the “theme from one of the worst movies ever made” and saying we (the crowd) were going to have to help her on the chorus of “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” because, after nearly 30 years of singing it- she was sick of the song. Her voice is still as strong as ever, but I can’t say as I blame her for not trying some of the higher notes. Blondie sounded great, as well and performed enough of their hits to satisfy the crowd- though their set seemed kind of short to me. That’s not to say it wasn’t a good show, it’s just that they’d wrapped up by 10:45. Still, the band was tight and Debbie Harry was in fine voice. I just had a friend tell me that the fish have left the lake for the rest of the summer. Evidently they have opted for a cooler climate somewhere else. I wouldn’t know about the condition of fishing be-cause I’ve not been to the lake in about five or six weeks. I know some of you think that I go hunting or fishing all the time, but that’s far from the truth. I’m just like everyone else; I go when my wife lets me, or when she’s not looking. And I always have to re-member that hunting and fishing tomorrow is sometimes dependant upon getting some things done at home, today. The weeds are killing me. It seems no matter what I do to get my yard low-maintenance, I still get overcome by those pesky plants. I have always figured that yard time is directly deducted from hunting and fishing time. I’ve also figured out that I can either make my neighbors happy with a kempt yard, or I can make myself happy with another morning in a boat. It’s evident which one I pick more of-ten. It does seem like we are all

overly interested in what other people think about us, or how we look to other people. Years ago, I put up a wooden privacy fence. I noticed after I had erected it, that I had put the pretty side facing the road. Now, I get to sit in my own backyard and look at the rough side. Why did I do that? Because that’s the way everybody else put theirs up. But why did they put theirs up that way? Because we all wanted to look good for the neigh-bors and the people passing by. Have you ever thought about how uncomfortable we are willing to make ourselves just so we can leave a certain impression? Some people are willing to walk around all day in a pair of shoes that are too little, just because they match the pants or dress they are wearing. Some people go through all sorts of pain in order to seem perfect on the outside. Again, it’s all about what others think about us. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be our best and portray our best, but we all must remember that one day the only one that we will give an account of ourselves to, is God. Comparisons and impres-

sions will have no effect on God. While others might talk about all of our contributions on this side of the tomb, God will be on the other side – in the backyard – looking at the side no one else sees.

bearded guys from ZZ Top sitting just a row away from us; a hoochie in a sequined dress that wouldn’t have looked good on a woman who actually HAD the body to wear it; the requisite hyperactive person next to me- seat dancing; some freaky dude sitting next to Shelby who had some kind of rash- but that sure didn’t stop him from of-fering his leftover nachos to the people sitting behind him- then, he and his entire party (eight people or something) decided they’d had enough around halfway through Dylan’s set; and- of course- there was the whiny hag who crabbed about Dylan “didn’t play (this), he HAS to play (this), blah, blah, blah.” (Guess what, ya shrew? NO HE DOESN’T! Geesh.) Sunday’s freak show was no less amusing: plenty of “alterna-tive lifestyle” types; no less than five (that’s how many I saw) teen-aged girls dressed as “Crimes of Passion”-era Pat; the requisite jocular rednecks who seemed to think we wanted to talk to them (I didn’t); the girl who- while leaning against the thing and being in the way of Shelby’s being able to use it, said “there’s got to be an ATM around here somewhere”; the girl selling the little battery-operated fans who- after selling one- turned around and stepped, face first, into a light pole; Charles Manson- out on parole for the night. Either that, or his identical twin- it made me glad Benatar did thrall us with her version of “Helter Skelter” (from her “Precious Time” LP); and the guy who Shelby heard say while walking by the stand where they were for sale, “seriously, dude- if I had devilled eggs, I could shut this place down.” At least the young lady at the adult beverage stand was pleas-ant, and the bottles were nice and cold…

Funny how I haven’t heard any-

thing from Peter Gammons de-fending his beloved Red Sux’ hon-or- or decrying the offenders- since the news came out that David Ortiz tested positive for steroids in 2003- as did Manny Ramirez. Still think that “curse breaking” champion-ship was the product of skill alone? Yeah, right. You know, I just don’t get it- where is the outrage? Where’s the disgust? Why aren’t the fans lined up to do something else besides support a sport where the whole problem of drug use is basically brushed aside by it’s bosses and glossed over by the players who are clean- who seem to turn a blind eye to their teammates/co-workers who decide to cheat. And make no bones about it- they are cheaters. Any explanation offered by the offenders is just an excuse- and there are precious few of those. The few players who have “come clean” have only done so because they’ve been outed- not through any desire to do the right thing, but because they got caught. Sooner or later, one of them will go in the Hall of Fame. The day they’re elected, well- I’d say base-ball is pretty much done for. And they’ve got no one but themselves to blame…

Lest you think we’re immune, the Braves’ lone championship in their incredible run is tainted by the fact that then-Yankee David Justice had a positive test, too. Anyone willing to bet he only started using after he left Atlanta?

That’s it for this week. I’ll be back next time with more news, notes, and rumors from the sports world. As always, send your ques-tions, praises, or gripes to [email protected], or via snail mail to: Bean Spouts c/o Spirit Newspapers P.O. Box 33 Pooler, GA 31322.

By C. Edward Wilson Time to get down to the nitty-gritty It is just the first week of Au-gust, but time is fleeting as the first game of the 2009 football season looms on the horizon. Savannah Christian will un-doubtedly lead the charge into the season as it opens up on Aug. 22nd against Johnson High at Me-morial Stadium. It will be the first time the Red Raiders have trav-elled deep into Savannah to play a Region 3-AAAAA opponent. Three weeks later, SCPS will again come to Savannah to take on Jenkins High in a rare Thursday night con-test on Sept. 17th. With the so-called rebuilding year going on at Emanuel County Institute, this should signal the year that the Red Raiders take a huge step forward as the premiere team in regional classification-AA. The Groves football team will have to wait seven days after the SCPS/Johnson matchup to open

its 2009 campaign. The Rebels, under new coach Greg Hunter, will have to be click-ing on all cylinders on August 29th when they travel down the road to take on a powerful Houston Coun-ty football squad looking to make it back to the Georgia High School state football playoffs. Kurry returns to battle DeFilippis for starting quarterback spot Sophomore A.J. DeFilippis, a Pooler native and Benedictine Mili-tary School graduate, had a great spring practice and was a lock to start this season as the No. 1 quar-terback for Savannah State Uni-versity. It was reported that last year’s offensive threat quarterback Kur-win Curry was having some aca-demic problems. Curry worked furiously in the off-season to get back into shape and to hone his ac-ademic skills to make this upcom-ing season a most memorable one for an SSU program looking for its

first winning season since the days of Head Coach Bill Davis. There is information being spread that SSU graduate and NFL retired receiver Shannon Sharpe could possibly be in attendance at one of the home games for the Tigers this season. Sharpe, an All-Pro player, currently works for the CBS football broadcasting crew as an analyst. He still holds multiple SSU records and the Glenville na-tive will be a welcome sight to many, who think Sharpe should have been recognized for his many accomplishments. A possible ceremony will take place during the Tigers game against Bethune-Cookman Univer-sity on October 17th at Ted Wright Stadium. **Correction: It was reported in last week’s Spirit that Savannah State Uni-versity would be opening the season August 29th. The actual opener will be on August 4 on the road against Livingstone College in Greenville, S.C.

High School Sports

During this economic downturn when everyone is having to tighten their belts a bit, it’s nice to be able to still do things you enjoy or continue traditions that are a part of your fami-lies’ heritage. And, it’s even better if it’s free! The Fall Hunting Classics are such a tradition at Bass Pro Shops. This year, more than 100,000 people are expected to attend the 2009 Fall Hunting Classic August 7th through 23rd at the Bass Pro Shops located at 14045 Abercorn Street in Savannah. This 17-day event will feature hunting celebrities, seminars, workshops, craft activities and more and it is all free. “This event is huge! Hunters and other outdoor sportsmen and women look forward to it all year long,” said Savannah Bass Pro Shops General Manager David Hardee. “Outdoor enthusiasts will be able to learn the secret techniques and strategies used by professionals to gain a better ad-vantage in the field, see all the latest products and attend workshops and seminars. And, there is a ‘ripple ef-fect’ as other area retailers, gas sta-tions, hotels and restaurants benefit as well from the increased traffic the Classic generates,” Hardee added.

But why does Bass Pro Shops go to all the time, trouble and expense, especially in these gloomy economic times, to host such an event? Ac-cording to Hardee, ‘hunting is big business.’ And, indeed it is. A re-port by the Congressional Sportsmen Foundation cites America’s 34 mil-lion hunters and anglers are an eco-nomic powerhouse—spending some $8.6 million an hour. If this $76 bil-lion-a-year industry were a corpora-tion it would be among America’s 20 largest, ahead of Target, Costco and AT&T. Hunting and fishing sportsmen directly support 1.6 million jobs, spend more than a billion dollars just on licenses, stamps, tags and per-mits, and they generate $25 billion a year in federal, state and local taxes. More than 12.5 million hunters and shooting sports enthusiasts pump $24.9 billion into the economy each year. Where do those billions go? They spend $2.4 billion on guns and rifles, $203 million on binoculars, field glasses and other optics, decoys and game calls equate to $187 mil-lion, hunting apparel takes up $459 million and ammunition purchases equate to $696 million. Just food and drinks consumed

on hunting trips eats up $2.1 bil-lion. And, on lodging alone, hunters spend $614 million—more than the combined annual revenues of Com-fort Inn, Comfort Suites, Quality Inn, EconoLodge, Rodeway Inn and Sleep Inn ($482 million). But the buck doesn’t stop there. It is vitally important that today’s youth get involved in the outdoors so they can become the stewards and conservationists of tomorrow to in-sure the maintenance and well-being of our natural resources. “I’ve heard it said that if you don’t have a fishing rod in the hands of a youngster by the time they are 8 years old, the chances of getting them to go fishing later in life diminishes dramatically,” said Hardee . “I would think the same applies to getting them introduced to hunting and shooting sports,” he continued. Why is this so important? The sale of hunting licenses, tags and stamps is the primary source of fund-ing for most state wildlife conserva-tion efforts. Hunters and anglers have always been, and continue to be, the largest contributors to govern-ment wildlife conservation programs. Through excise taxes and license rev-enues, these sportsmen have contrib-uted more than $10 billion dollars to conservation and provide more than 80% of the funding for most state fish and wildlife agencies. Just from hunters alone, nearly $200 million in hunters’ federal excise taxes are dis-tributed to State agencies to support wildlife each year. Success stories of these wildlife restoration projects are exemplified though the ‘bringing back’ of dozens of species such as ducks, wild turkeys and white-tailed deer. In 1900 there were less than 100,000 wild turkeys in the nation. Today there are 7 mil-lion. Prior to training camp, it was revealed that contract extension talks between the Falcons and WR Roddy White had not gone…shall we say, swimmingly. While both sides still remain on amicable terms and have not gone to the media with any grievances, it could be a while before White is signed to a long term deal, if it happens at all. You see, the Patriot Way has been ruthless in these types of situations before. Ex-Falcon Lawyer Milloy can vouch to that. Milloy was a key leader on a team that unexpectedly won a Su-per Bowl after the 2001 season. So integral was he to that teams suc-cess that he was one of 3 Patriots to help narrate NFL Films Award Winning Super Bowl Series; Amer-ica’s Game for that 2001 team. On the eve of the 2003 season, he was unceremoniously released. Just like that. Oh sure, the primary hang-up was money, but this was Law-yer Milloy we were talking about. Heart & soul of the Patriots defense and team leader. Indispensable, right? What did Bill Belichick have to say about it? “This is a player and person I have immense respect for, and he meant a lot to this team and organization. Unfortunately he’s a casualty of the system. The tim-ing is not good. We tried to find a way to make it work. In the end, we weren’t able to get to that point.” Just like that. This isn’t to say the Falcons and White are anywhere close to this conclusion. It’s just that this conclusion can and has oc-curred. So, 6 years later, a protégé of the Patriot Way now lords over the Fal-cons operation. And this is what he sees in Roddy White.

• Emerging all around threat.• Developing chemistry with fran-chise QB, Matt Ryan• Will be 28 in November• A player who has only produced at this level for 2 seasons. This is what he sees as far as the surrounding situation. Looming labor trouble could delay White’s foray into free agen-cy one more season. Even if labor trouble is avoided, the Falcons have the franchise tag. What this means is that when White makes it to FA, he’ll be doing so around 30. Michael Jenkins a nice #2 WR is locked up long term and a very enticing Harry Douglas also in the mix. Throw Tony Gonzalez into the mix for say the next 3 years, and the Falcons have a surplus of pass catching talent. With Matt Ryan, he sees a QB capa-ble of taking advantage of a diverse set of weapons versus overly relying on one. Listen…the Falcons don’t want to lose Roddy White. But at this point, why make a deal with White unless it’s advantageous to the Fal-cons. White’s leverage would be to

hold out. Whether that would force the Falcons had? Well, Dimitroff comes from an organization that re-leased a Super Bowl winning team and defensive leader days before the start of the season. In an en-vironment like that, you learn not to blink. Plus, how many times do you hear about contract squabbles or trouble coming out of New Eng-land? Not many. So if Dimitroff and White are headed for a stand-off, and let’s also state, we’re not sure if they would be…this would be its first real test. Sure, the team first attitude and building through the draft philoso-phies are hallmarks of the Patriot Way. But if you look back, it’s how the Patriots deal with adversity in the face of success that really de-fines why they’ve become the model franchise in the NFL. Staying true to ones core principles can be dif-ficult, especially in the face of harsh criticism. It was all Belichick could do to walk through his own locker room in the days after Milloy’s release. They were spanked 31-0 in their first game against Milloy’s new team, the Buffalo Bills. 5 months later, they were hoisting another Lombardi tro-phy, the second of three. Last season, they lost Tom Brady, the foundational building block of the franchise and perhaps the NFL minutes into the season. Plugging in a QB who hadn’t started since high school, they narrowly missed the playoffs, but still com-piling a gaudy 11-5 record. Allowing White to flap in the wind might not be a move perceived well publicly, especially if White were to hold out. But if the Patriot Way is truly being implemented in

Flowery Branch, it shouldn’t alter ‘the course of action’ at all. That could produce tension between the Falcons star WR and the Falcons wunderkind GM and the Falcons Way first real test.

Inshore FIshIng reporT Trophy reds in the Sounds and around docks! Captain Ray Crawley of Miss Judy Charters definitely has the “Trophy Red Fish Program” dialed in. He has been doing quite on the slack high to out going tide stage. Captain Ray starts in the grass and as the tide falls he just fish’s his in way out. However, he did add with these crazy “high highs and low lows” tide stages it has been a little frustrating picking exactly the pre-fect departure time. He also has seen numerous fishermen “high and dry,” because the out going tide have been so strong and fast. The bottom line to this situation is that a mud flat might look like the water is going to fall from the bank out. However, if the mud flat is higher in some places than others you could find yourself in the stay-ing mode until the next tide. This is why it suggested to scout out shal-low areas on the incoming and not the out going tide stage! According to Captain Ray’s reports the trophy red fish bite has been good and he has experi-ence another bite, which is “rat reds.” These are juvenile red fish are about 11 inches in length. They are also referred to as “puppy drum.” This bite has been steady with these fish showing up in areas where they aren’t normally found. The best news is this means, “We are having a “2009 bumper crop” of these fish. This all boils down too it won’t take long before these fish will be over 14 inches fitting nicely into the 14 TL (min) to 23 TL (max) required of keeping. All Good News! Spud Woodward of Georgia DNR Said… These 11-inch reds should make it to 14 inches by late September or early October. The more aggres-sive individuals will get there a bit sooner. The fact that you’re seeing lots of sub-legal reds boils down to a pretty good indication of a strong 2008-year class. According to Chris Kalinowsky,“our young-of-year redfish net survey” in Wassaw is showing higher than average num-bers as well. We’ll know for sure if it’s a boom year when the annual survey is completed in August, and the data is compared with previous years. Since redfish have a protract-ed spawning period - at least two months from August through Oc-tober - you can see wide variation in sizes of fish from the same year class. Some years it appears that most of a year class is the result of early spawning while in other years it appears the fish produced by

late spawning are more abundant. The intensity of the winter can also influence the timing of when anglers start seeing “school bass” since the fish will grow slower in cold winters versus mild winters because of slower metabolism and reduced food availability. Glad to hear that we may be looking at a good autumn for redfish. Nice to have some good news!

Large spotted sea trout on the beachfronts! During these hot times the big-ger fish are basically just like us “they seek cooler areas.” With that being said, “The larger trout can not only be found on the beach-fronts, because it’s cooler, but also because it’s spawning time!” When we talk about a large fish such as this we already know they are smarter than the average fish. This boils down to the fact that a large trout wants to eat, but it wants every attack to be a large success meaning “go with larger baits.” I always suggest adding a little cast-ing into the fish day when possible, because what you might catch in your net just might be the bait that a big fish wants! Just think about it! Captain Jack Mcgowan inshore fishing report! July 26, 2009 High evening tides muddied water and made conditions dur-ing the week difficult to fish. Many people think shark fishing is a sum-mer time given. This isn’t necessar-ily the case. Strong currents and muddy water can make shark fish-ing very challenging. Typically and incoming tide can offer an abun-dance of sharks and all sorts of fish. This week the outgoing produced most of big bites. We hooked one (100 pound) tarpon on finely aged mullet that was cut into. The only point is most fishermen go to great extremes to fish live bait for tar-pon. Lots of tarpon are caught on dead bait. When conditions are muddy if a quality fish picks up your bait and drops it chances are the fish wont be able to track the bait down. Fishing this week was tricky. Sea trout bit pretty good when fishing areas with clean water and moderate current. Fishing for shark and tarpon was slow. Big tides pulled most of the bait out. There have be consistent reports of large menhaden on the south side of Wassaw. Typical areas for whiting produced only small newly birthed blacktip sharks. As quickly as conditions be-came difficult to fish, due last week to a lunar perigee on the July 21st the moon was at its closest point to the earth. During the coming week

tides will be subsiding and condi-tions should be improving. Plenty of bait in the creeks and rivers but anticipate big tides to have pull the bulk of the bait shrimp into the sounds. Nice catches of flounder being reported from the slough at Little Tybee. During big tides as a generalization the best time to fish can be at the top or bottom of the tide or look areas with clean water and moderate currents. The unusual catch this week was a cobia at the mouth of Turner Creek and the Wilmington River. The fish was released. It was likely around 30 inches. Earl from Ad-ams bait shop says, “Fish towards the sounds that’s where most of the fish are being caught with not much on the inside.” On the other hand some creeks and rivers on the inside are teeming with life lots of bait, small sea trout, a wide of small fish as well as large bonnet head sharks and small black tip shark in the two foot range. It’s summer time fishermen while looking for a bite can go through lots of bait in short order. In muddy conditions its not un-common for ladyfish to dominate a sea trout drop. The eyes on a la-dyfish are very large. On days when the water quality is poor it’s likely ladyfish can see your bait much easier in muddy conditions. The water is containing lots of silt, try popping your float more often or even better use a popping float. Fishermen can find some redfish back in the grass, but its summer. Flats that can hold lots of redfish in cooler conditions might hold only a few during this time. Overall looks like good year! Fishing this week should be improving as tides sub-side. Try to avoid to fishing areas with muddy water. Tarpon on the Beachfronts! I do have to admit that it’s defi-nitely “tarpon Time!” However, the action at least off and around Wassaw Island been a little slow. According to report from a little down south their tarpon bite is a little more predictable. Don’t wor-ry our time is coming. If you want to give this type of fishing a try you need to catch some pogies, be-cause this is your best bait. Howev-er, threadfin herring will also work. I will keep you posted as the fish catching news rolls in! King Mackerel on the beachfronts! Blue runners are the ticket to the bite near shore or offshore king mackerel bite. It you want a“smoking Thrill” use this bait. It’s best to slow troll using down riggers or any methods possible which allows you control of the

depth fished! There is a secret when rigging up live bait especially where a “J” style hook is used. You should always push the “J” hook’s point along with barb all the way through. The first hook is what I call the “lead hook.” I always suggest pushing the entire hook’s point and barb all the way through to the other side. The reason be-ing is when you get a hit in the head area of your bait the hook is most likely to “stick in the fish than not.” The next two hooks on this king rig are #4 trebles. It’s not necessary to push these hook points through. There reason being is they have two extra points, which offers a better chance of a hook up. The se-cret when setting these hooks is to only push the hook’s point just to cover the treble’s barb. The reason being is that you want this hook to swing free as soon as possible, which offers much more hook up opportunity! By the middle of July espe-cially by the beginning of August large king mackerel also known as “brown eyes” make way to these areas. Tybee Roads also known as the shipping channel has always been a feeding point of interest for these fish. Not only this area, but also Port Royal Sound is also vis-ited by these “most of the time off-shore fish.” These areas have con-secutively held king mackerel dur-ing this time for years. This kind of fishing is what I call “Hero or Zero fishing!’ The reason being is that you don’t always catch a big king, but when you do it definitely a wall hanger! Beachfront areas between these areas have always offered somewhat of a larger king bite, but most fishermen don’t even give it a try. So therefore those spaces in between are “big time” points of interest when it comes to a large king mackerel. All areas have bait in the formed rips, which offers food for a fish’s thought!

Blue WaTer suggesTIons Blue water fish are being caught from near shore out to 100 miles offshore. With this sugges-tion “Just Fish!”

FreshIes suggesTIon As The Worm Turns! I take a lot of freshwater fisher-men saltwater fishing. Now that’s a mouth full for sure! When it comes to the old stand by “plastic worm” they all say just about the same thing. The bottom line is this “it a great bait, which has lots of faces!” This means from my point of view is the fact that a worm is worm, but the way it’s worked is what counts. For instance: When it’s hot it sug-gested working your worm fast.

When it cold it suggested too work it slow. Some fishermen like to use a bullet weight while others pre-fers just the worm alone. About the only thing that I did get consec-utively was the fact that the worm at least most of the time should be rigged weed less. However, I had one fisherman tell me that he like to exposed his hook’s point just enough to get a more solid hook up, but not enough for it to get hung on something except for the fish. There are all kinds of worms on the market now days with each tackle manufacture claiming to have the “prefect worm that works.” My suggestion is this and it’s derived from all those fresh-water fishermen that I have taken saltwater fishing is this: “If you are using a plastic worm as bait and if it looks like a worm, acts like a worm it should work!” Since worms don’t do much on there own with the exception of falling from a tree and crawling haphazardly on the bottom your options for working the old worm is “wide open!” The means you can work it’s just like a regular worm or one that’s a little different! It seems that no matter what you do with the “old stand by plastic worm” your hook up chanc-es are very good!

Thanks for reading! Captain Judy

Here’s a rakish antique roadster of 1909, complete with one of those infamous old “mother-in-law” seats

that offered a minimum of safety and a maximum of danger. These open-air, flimsy and completely hazardous

rear seats eventually were replaced with rumble seats in the post-World War I era. And with the end of the 1930s, rumble seats were “out,” and five-passenger, two-door convert-ibles with all seats within the cab were “in.” But the rumble seat made a much later reappearance as an ex-tra on the ‘57 Thunderbird. That ex-tra was known as the “bird’s nest.” Who knows who coined the term “mother-in-law seat,” but it may have been someone who dis-liked his own mother-in-law and hoped she’d fall out when he took a fast corner! Even more dangerous than that was the positively hazard-ous running-board seat, a skimpy lit-tle thing that folded out for use and hovered precariously above the run-ning board, completely outside the car! It was used on a few speedsters and sport roadsters in the late teens and early ‘20s. Much safer were the “clover-leaf” roadsters of that same era, which offered a back seat inside the body and under the convertible top. The Selden automobile was conceived (but not engineered) by George B. Selden, who until 1911 had demanded a royalty on every gas-powered car built in America, as he claimed to have “invented” the internal-combustion engine in 1877. He’d built no cars then, but years later had constructed a buggy-like auto with “1877” painted on its sides, a car that he had designed “in his head” back in 1877. Henry Ford and a few other manufacturers even-tually refused to pay Selden his trib-ute, and Seldon losts his case when it was brought to court.

1909 SELDENBACK-SEAT PASSENGERS HUNG ON WITH WHITE KNUCKLES BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI

Dear Tom and Ray: When I was in college during the late 1980s, I remember one of my chemistry professors telling me that he disposed of organic chemi-cal waste by just pouring it in his gas tank and burning it along with the gasoline. I imagine the waste would have contained things like benzene, xylene, toluene, cyclohex-ane, cyclohexene and cyclohexa-nol, just to name a few. I’m a high-school chemistry teacher and have a supply of organic waste collecting. I was wondering if disposing of or-ganic waste this way would do any damage to my ‘94 Dodge Dakota or my wife’s ‘01 Ford Windstar. It seems like this would work, since gasoline already is a mixture of or-ganic compounds. But if I ruined one of my vehicles, I’d never hear the end of it at home or at work. -- Tom TOM: Well, perhaps in the old days, before we cared about things like the environment, dying at a young age or growing extra fingers, you could have tossed that stuff into the gas tank and driven off. But we strongly recommend against it. RAY: For two reasons. One is environmental. Some of this stuff -- like benzene -- are known car-cinogens. And even though there’s a small amount of benzene in gaso-line, its quantity is severely limited because we now know how nasty it is. TOM: And I don’t think any of your neighbors would appreciate waking up to the wafting aroma of benzene coming out of your tailpipe

over their morning Grape Nuts. RAY: The second reason is that there are dangers to your car. Like we said, in the old days, fuel sys-tems were exceedingly simple, and you could burn almost anything. My brother would burn his hair tonic when he was low on fuel. TOM: But now there are a lot of expensive plastic parts in a fuel system, like the gas tank, the fuel line and the O-ring seals on the fuel injectors. And benzene is a power-ful solvent. So if you have too much benzene in your fuel, it can melt stuff. RAY: And it’s not just the ben-zene. Some of the compounds you mention can form peroxides when heated and mixed with air. And peroxides can cause fuels to gum up. Plus, if any of the solvents have trace metals in them, those are not good things to burn in your fuel system, either. TOM: So I’d move on to plan B, Tom. I know it’s expensive to have a licensed waste-disposal company dispose of these chemicals properly, but that’s the thing to do. RAY: Perhaps you can get some other local chemistry teachers to-gether and the schools can split the cost of one legal disposal a year. And while you’re together, you guys can discuss the latest in pocket-pro-tector technology.

BY AL CARRELL AND KELLY CAR-RELL

You would expect that the bath-room is the most humid room in the house, but it doesn’t mean you want mildew and mold growing on the walls. If you don’t have a ventilator in the room, you should consider adding one. If you do have one, here are some tips to make sure you get the full benefit from it. If you want to add a fan, you can do so as long as you have ac-cess to the ceiling so you can vent it outdoors or through the roof. Most require minimum wiring, and you can do it yourself if you can wire a light fixture. Look for a fan that will exhaust a lot of air, and one

that will be reasonably quiet. The timers that are available for wall switches are a great add-on to a ventilator fan, so install one when you install your fan, or add one to an existing fan. You want the fan to run for at least 15 minutes after the shower has been cut off. That should be enough time to clear the majority of the humidity from the room. A lot of people, natural-ly, turn it off when they leave the room, and this usually doesn’t al-low enough time to do the job. Switching to compact fluores-cent bulbs also can cut down on the heat, which can help prevent some of the humidity in the bathroom, in addition to saving energy. Leave bathroom doors open

when privacy isn’t an issue. If you need to keep the door closed, then consider installing a vent in the door itself. This will give you pri-vacy but will increase the air flow to the room. Just cut a hole in the door and install a metal vent cover on both sides. Paint it to match the door, and it will be barely notice-able. A room fan also can be helpful. Use it to help move the air out into the adjoining room. The next time you paint, add a mildew inhibitor to your paint, or buy paint with one included.

* * * Dear Carrells: My daughter learned about water-saving devices in school and brought home a fau-cet aerator for our sink. I didn’t think much of it, but installed it to give her school credit. It made a big difference. She tells me it saves half the water, but I notice the increase in pressure. I always thought they would decrease the pressure. Boy, was I wrong! -- R.T.

* * *A SUPER HINT -- To seal up plumb-ing joints without Teflon tape, try a little ChapStick. The waxy kind in the roll-up tube will help lubricate and seal threaded plumbing joints.

* * * Dear Kelly: At our last party, we accidentally dropped a brisket on the carpeted floor. What a mess it was to clean up! The red stain was the least of the problem -- the grease was the worst. I blotted the stain up and then covered the whole thing with cornmeal and left it on over-night. Most of the grease came up with the vacuum. The rest came up with more cleaner. I think the only reason it came up at all was because we got to it right away. Be careful with your briskets, and keep some cornmeal handy for greasy messes! -- G.R.

* * * SHOPTALK -- Radiant barriers are a great way to prevent heat from penetrating your home’s exterior, and can be added to an existing at-tic to help save money on your en-ergy bills. UltraTouch Natural Cot-ton Radiant Barrier is a lightweight, foil-faced barrier made from natu-ral recycled fibers. It offers excel-lent thermal and acoustical perfor-mance, and even has fire-retardant qualities. If you’ve considered add-ing a radiant barrier but wanted to try doing it yourself to save money, this is a great option. Check it out at your Home Depot, and find out more by visiting www.bondedlogic.com.

* * * Q: I have a question about a wa-ter leak outside the house. It’s been dripping for several years, but I’m not able to replace it myself. I was told that I could put a hose end cap on it to keep it from losing water. Is this OK to keep in place, or do I

have to replace the faucet? -- M.G. A: If the faucet is dripping, it’s probably just a washer that needs to be replaced. This is a pretty easy fix. Just shut off the water, remove the faucet stem and replace the worn washer. You will have to turn the water off first, and it might take some muscle -- but not a lot of time or cash -- to do the repair. You can

leave the end cap on as long as it doesn’t start leaking. Replace the washer in it every year.
